PRESIDENT’S CORNER As this goes to press, we have enjoyed a semester of outstanding fine arts programming with numerous musical and theatre performances; our men’s basketball team is undefeated and ranked no. 1 in the country and our women’s basketball team has only one loss and is ranked no. 8 nationally. Much more of the same is on top for the spring so plan to join us and enjoy the talents of our students.

“Hutchinson Community College

will continue to provide the training business and industry and our students need to be successful while looking to the future. ” Dr. Carter File

Happy New Year from Hutchinson Community College! We hope your holiday season has provided you a blessed opportunity with family and friends. We are in the midst of another banner year at Hutchinson Community College. Enrollment is steady with over 13,500 total students. A snapshot of the College and its impact locally can be found on page 12.

Hutch CC has a long and rich tradition of providing outstanding educational opportunities to our students, while being responsive to our local community needs. Whether students are looking to develop their core of general education courses so they may transfer to a four-year education institution; or are interested in the career and technical education path to the work place, Hutchinson Community College has something to offer. Likewise, the College looks to serve the community in a premier fashion, through the opportunity for continuing education through venues like The Osher Institute, fine arts events, numerous athletic contests or Radio Kansas. In addition, Hutchinson Community College strives to be an integral part of the community. We must continue to be relevant to local employers who provide opportunities to our graduates and provide the training they need to compete and achieve their business goals. We must

continue to work with local economic development entities, such as the Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce, to help attract new business and expand existing ones. As we move on to a new year, the college is well positioned to grow on its success. We eagerly await the results of our accreditation visit from the Higher Learning Commission that took place in October. We’ve initiated a strategic planning initiative to ensure our offerings and delivery methods remain relevant and in the best interests of our students. With a collaborative and entrepreneurial spirit, the College partners with local school districts to provide career and technical education opportunities under Senate Bill 155, and concurrent enrollment in general education courses for transfer to universities. Hutchinson Community College will continue to provide the training business and industry and our students need to be successful while looking to the future. Learning, Access, and Collaboration are not mere words at Hutchinson Community College, but are seen as a pledge for the College to do its part to continue to make Reno County and Kansas competitive, desirable places to live and locate businesses, and to continue to fulfill our students’ educational needs.

#DIFFERENCEMAKER Investing in the Future

Each year, more and more students attending college are dependent upon some level of scholarship aid. For more information on how you can help continue the tradition of True Blue Excellence, we encourage you to contact the Endowment Association’s Executive Director, Cindy Keast, at keastc@hutchcc.edu.

The Hutchinson Community College Endowment Association and the Hutchinson Community Foundation are excited to announce a new scholarship opportunity at Hutch CC. Thanks to the support of long-time Hutchinson residents and supporters of Hutchinson Rich and Judy Manka Community College Rich and Judy Manka, five deserving students will have the opportunity to further their educations beginning in 2016. The Mankas have pledged a significant gift from the Rich and Judy Manka Fund at the Hutchinson Community Foundation to provide for the establishment of the Hutchinson Community College Hispanic Heritage Scholarship. “With the significant impact immigration has had on this country, we felt this was a population that needed enhanced opportunities for higher education”, stated the Mankas. “Each of our three children benefitted from taking classes from Hutch CC while in high school, before finishing their college careers at the University of Kansas, so we have first-hand experience as to the quality of education available to these students.”

NEW SCHOLARSHIPS A long-established scholarship at the Endowment Association received a significant boost recently. The Hutchinson High School Class of 1965 established a scholarship fund in 2005 at its 40th reunion with the goal of endowing scholarships for future graduates of Hutchinson High. With the leadership of a scholarship committee, coordinated by Jim Davis, the Fund has continued to grow since its inception. At their recent 50 year class reunion, Davis and the others led a renewed effort with the goal of endowing at least $250,000 by the class’s 60th reunion in 2025. Three recipients of the HHS Class of 65 Scholarships are, L-R: Christopher Brown (2015-16), Megan Budreau (2014-15) and John Harvey (201011). Each of these students addressed the HHS Class of 1965 at its 50th reunion in September. HCC NOW! FALL 2015

QUEST CENTER HISTORY

It was 1987 and the local area’s economy was stung by massive layoffs in the aircraft industry. Dr. Ed Berger, then President of Hutchinson Community College, and Thane Woolsey, then General Manager of the Hutchinson Division of Cessna Aircraft, worked with many other community and local government leaders to develop the concept that grew to become the Quest Center. Richard French became the first director of the Quest Center, which originated as a business incubator with walls, offering affordable office space, business support, business consulting, marketing, advertising, management, finance and book keeping. It was the first business incubator in Kansas. In 1988 Clark Jacobs joined Hutchinson Community College and the Quest Center for Entrepreneurs, spending about half of his time with Quest Center clients. The Quest Center also became associated with Wichita State University and Small Business Development. In the coming years, Dan Lebedoer and Ron Hirst led the Quest Center as Directors. Over the years, the Quest Center had to adjust to the needs of its clients. Technology, computers, and the internet have replaced many of the services that were once offered at the Quest Center. In 2011, the Quest Center Board of Directors sold the building in which it is located to Hutchinson

STILL SERVING OUR COMMUNITY

In July of 2014, the Quest Center for Entrepreneurs was brought under the umbrella of Hutchinson Community College with Dave Dukart as the Center’s new director. The Quest Center for Entrepreneurs continues to offer many of the services that it did in its first years - business planning and development, business financial consulting, business marketing and advertising consulting. Under the direction of the Quest Center’s board of directors and in conjunction with Reno County E-Partners, it can also offer gap financing for business startups, expansion, and succession. As part of Hutchinson Community College, the Quest Center for Entrepreneurs is able to offer even more opportunities for clients and students in the form of academics and consultations on business planning, development, financing, marketing and advertising. Several local businesses have taken advantage of the services offered by the Quest Center, including Scuttlebutts, Benton’s Greenhouse, Apron Strings and Apollo Engraving.

owned business for 69 years.

Working with the Quest Center for Entrepreneurs at Hutchinson Community College, SCKEDD, Reno County E-Partners, and KSBDC, they were able to put a funding package together to purchase the business and provide funding for inventory and working capital. Jennifer has worked at the greenhouse since 2009 learning about many aspects of the operation of the business. In 2015, when owner Diana Beasley decided she wanted to sell, Jennifer was able to purchase Benton’s Greenhouse. Benton’s Greenhouse provides wholesale superior quality indoor foliage plants to 26 independent florists and floral departments in Kansas, Nebraska, and Missouri.

STEP AHEAD

Get a step ahead! With the rising costs of higher education, affordability is always a concern for parents and students. Hutchinson Community College has a program in place that can help you get a head start on a quality education at one of the premier colleges in Kansas.

If you’re a student attending a Kansas high school and take some classes from Hutch CC before you graduate, you may be eligible to be reimbursed for the tuition costs you’ve incurred. Step Ahead credit can be earned by taking classes on or off campus and on-line prior to high school graduation. Our Step Ahead program can reimburse you the cost you have spent on tuition provided Hutchinson Community College is the first institution your child attends after high school graduation. The tuition reimbursement is granted to students who enroll and attend full-time in the Fall or Spring semesters following high school graduation. The credit can be applied to further coursework, significantly reducing the cost of higher education for you and your student. For the specific details of the Step Ahead program please go to: www.hutchcc.edu/future-students/high-school and click on the Step Ahead link.

“I knew Hutch CC was a great choice for me. The Step Ahead Program was so convenient. I enjoyed being able to take several classes while still in high school.”

“The convenience of the Newton Center made it easy for me to get a head start on my college classes. Getting the tuition refunded when I came to Hutch CC was an added bonus.” -Taylor Stahly
