PRESIDENT’S CORNER to our students, while being responsive to our local community needs. Whether students are looking to develop a core of their general education courses so they may transfer to a four-year education institution, or are interested in the career and technical education path to the workplace, HutchCC has something to match those needs.

“Hutchinson Community College

We are especially proud to have recently learned from the Institutional Actions Council of the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) that our accredited status with the HLC has been continued. The College will remain fully accredited with no interim monitoring or reporting required. This is a significant accomplishment that affirms what we have long believed – Hutchinson Community College offers an extremely high quality educational opportunity.

will continue to provide the training business and industry and our students need to be successful while looking to the future. ” Dr. Carter File

In addition, HutchCC is embarking on a strategic planning initiative to better position ourselves to prosper in the future. We have identified several key areas that we will focus on in the coming months and years to further strengthen the commitment we have to our students and the community.

Our mission – expanding the tradition of excellence through learning and collaboration – and our vision – for Hutchinson Community College to be the premier, two-year educational institution in Kansas, delivering accessible opportunities for learning, growth and improved quality of life – lay the foundation for all things we do.

Perhaps surprising to some, our reach extends well beyond the borders of Hutchinson and Reno County. We have Outreach Centers in Newton and McPherson, as well as a presence at Fort Riley. These locations, as well as HutchCC’s strong on-line presence, allow us to impact students not only statewide but globally.

Hutchinson Community College has a long, rich tradition of providing outstanding educational opportunities

Hutchinson Community College strives to be an integral part of the community. We must continue to be relevant to local

employers who provide opportunities to our graduates and provide the training these employers need to compete and fulfill their needs, thereby accomplishing their business goals. With a collaborative and entrepreneurial spirit, the college partners with local school districts to provide career and technical education opportunities under Senate Bill 155, and concurrent enrollment in general education courses for transfer to universities. Partnerships with other local entities (such as the Fire Science Training Facility co-located on the Hutchinson Fire Department training grounds) are important to our continued future success. For example, this facility offers an outstanding opportunity for our students to partner with the professional firefighters in the Hutchinson Fire Department. With dedicated and quality faculty, the college offers students and the community an outstanding value in higher education. Hutchinson Community College will continue to be a high-value educational provider to local business and industry and to our students. This will be accomplished by keeping our tuition and fees competitive and our educational and training offerings current, relevant and effective. Learning, access and collaboration are not mere words at Hutchinson Community College, but are seen as a pledge for the college to do its part to continue to make Reno County and Kansas competitive, desirable places to live and locate businesses, and to continue to fulfill our students’ educational needs.

Growing up with the opportunity to be the third generation to join the family-owned business, one would think Tom Elliott knew exactly what his future held. Upon graduation from Hutchinson High School in 1977, the immediate decision facing Tom was where to continue this education. While many friends were moving on to four-year colleges and universities, that wasn’t high on Tom’s list. What made the most sense for him was just down the street at Hutchinson Community College. “Even though I eventually ended up at KU, going there didn’t appeal to me when I graduated from Hutch High”, shared Tom. “I didn’t know what I wanted to study, so HutchCC provided me the opportunity to take a variety of classes and set the foundation for my overall college experience.” After finishing his studies at Hutch, Tom made the trek to Lawrence where he ultimately graduated in 1981. It wasn’t until his junior year at KU that the thought of returning to Hutchinson and joining the family business, Elliott Mortuary, began to tug at Tom. Up until then, Tom had his sights set on a much different career path – one in federal law enforcement, possibly as a member of the Secret Service. Fortunately for his hometown, the interest in law enforcement was a fleeting one. Following KU, Tom earned his Mortuary Science degree from Kansas City Kansas Community College, a two year program Tom was able to complete in half that time, then came home to be a part of the family business.

Elliott mortuary history Elliott Mortuary & Crematory is a family owned and operated funeral home that has served the families of Hutchinson and Reno County for over 80 years. The funeral home was established in 1935 when Jim Elliott partnered with Dale Gard to establish Elliott-Gard Mortuary, at a time when Hutchinson and Reno County were just emerging from the Great Depression and dust storms continued to plague Western Kansas. Both men had family backgrounds in the profession. Their fathers operated funeral homes and Jim’s brother was a partner of Dale’s father at a funeral home in Anthony, Kansas. Jim’s sons, Bill and Don Elliott, joined the funeral home in 1948 and 1953, respectively. Bill joined after serving

in the Army during World War II and college, while Don joined following service in the Korean War and college. In 1952, the Elliott Family acquired the Gard partnership. The name was changed to Elliott Mortuary in 1962. Jim Elliott remained active at the funeral home until his death on August 17, 1977. Don and Bill continued the operation with increasing help from Don’s sons, Tom and Paul Elliott. Tom joined the funeral home following completion of college in June of 1982. He is currently the third generation owner and president of Elliott Mortuary & Crematory.

much like those before provided Tom with a similar opportunity. In addition they have provided support for the Richard E. Smith Science Center, Gowans Stadium and the Mull Family Football Complex as well as ongoing support of various athletic programs, including football, basketball and volleyball.

All in the Family

Tom wasn’t the first Elliott to become a Blue Dragon. His father Don, uncles Bob and Bill and brother Stan all spent time in Lockman Hall at some point in their college careers. For the Elliotts, the groundwork established at Hutchinson Community College provided a foundation not only for their education, but for their life’s goals. Tom cites a number of instructors for influencing him not only at Hutch, but even still today, namely Dale Keller, Willie Adkins and Olin Allen. “What impressed me then and still today is the faculty cares not only about you as a student, but how you’re preparing yourself for the next steps, whether that be transferring to another school or entering the workforce.” Support from the Elliott family has touched many facets of Hutchinson Community College, from scholarships to facility improvements to a variety of programs. Tom and his wife Carolyn have long sponsored a Presidential Scholarship allowing them to invest in students

Rion Rhoades Hutch CC Head Football Coach

Tom hopes that one day those he and his family have helped will do the same for others, much like others did for him. “Hutchinson Community College has allowed my family the ability to invest in the college, its staff and especially its students and studentathletes. That investment pays countless returns. It is an honor to Elliott Family - Tom, Carolyn, Claire, Paige be able to help strengthen the quality of education for future students.”

What I respect and appreciate so much about Tom is his work ethic, energy and attitude. We have spent years hunting ducks together and the routine on many of those early morning hunts was to come by the Parlor at 4:45 am and either pick Tom up or just keep going because his work day had already started. The guy works incredible hours, leads by example in all the things he does and does so with a high level of energy and enthusiasm. Whether it’s family, work or his passion for hunting, Tom is all in with a positive, contagious attitude.

One of the many things I admire about Tom is his love of Hutchinson and, specifically, Hutchinson Community College. When Tom offers support for our program, he does so not for what it may do for him or his business, but because of the opportunities it provides the students.

“Hutchinson Community College provides students and student athletes with a wonderful opportunity to begin their college career. Take full advantage of the many offerings available. The college years are some of the best years of your life”

Keith Hughes CEO, First National Bank of Hutchinson

Tom is one of the most unassuming and genuine people I’ve met here in Hutch. I’m reluctant to mention this only because I know he’s the last person who wants any recognition for what he’s done for our program and many others. He ends every conversation with ‘if you need any help with anything, please let me know.’ But all support aside, what sets Tom apart is his unflagging, eternally optimistic, positive spirit. Has anyone ever walked away from a conversation with Tom without feeling upbeat? If I get to choose the team, I’m going to start with wanting Tom on my side.

Tom Elliott, and father Don, greet Presidential Scholarship students.

Elliott and his wife Carolyn, whom he met in high school, continue to call Hutchinson home. He is the proud father of two daughters, Paige, an interior designer in Austin, TX and Claire, a student at Loomis Chaffee in Windsor, CT. His favorite advice for his girls, which he shares with any college student he has the opportunity to visit with is simple: Work hard and have fun.

The Hutchinson Community College Livestock Judging Team was named the Reserve Champion Team in the Carload Contest at the National Western Stock Show in Denver, CO. In this event, the students evaluated 96 head of cattle, spread out over 6 classes. They ranked the livestock based on quality and uniformity and answered questions related to conformation, potential carcass value and industry profitability. Twenty-three teams competed in the event from across the country. The Blue Dragons were represented by team members Taylor Ohlde (Winchester, KS), Jonah Biensch (Lloydminster, Saskatchewan), Greg Schlickau (Pretty Prairie, KS), Madison Butler (Vincennes, IN), Hannah Moyer (Lamar, MO) and Bailee Porter (Norfolk, NE). The HutchCC agricultural team is coached by instructor of agriculture and Livestock Judging coach Ben Williams and assistant coach Robert Strecker.

alumni focus Tyson & Emily Mullen HCC NOW! recently caught up with two alumni, Tyson & Emily Mullen from Ulysses, Kansas. YEARS ATTENDED HUTCHCC: Tyson - Fall 2003 - Spring 2005 Emily - Fall 2002 - Spring 2003; Fall 2004 - Spring 2005 WHAT ARE THEY DOING NOW? Tyson - pharmacist and owner of Grant County Drug, Ulysses Emily - registered nurse and bookkeeper/office manager for Grant County Drug

WHAT IS THE ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU WOULD SHARE WITH PROSPECTIVE HUTCHCC STUDENTS? Tyson - get involved in clubs and activities around campus to meet as many people as you can. Emily - don’t hesitate to ask faculty and staff for help. They are the most caring individuals who want everyone to succeed.

WHAT MAKES HUTCHCC SPECIAL TO YOU? Tyson - I came from a small town so being able to have small class sizes where I was able to get to know my professors was huge for me. The science department is amazing and I developed a great group of friends to continue on to pharmacy school with! Emily - I had the privilege to be an Ambassador which allowed me to meet people interested in coming to Hutchinson. I love the town, college and staff at HutchCC. And of course meeting my husband! Alumnus Emily & Tyson Mullen with their two children. Photo provided by Mullen family.

faculty focus Dr. Charles Buller POSITION:

Chemistry Instructor

EDUCATION: BA Bethel College, MS University of Nebraska-Lincoln, PhD Kansas State University - all degrees are in Chemistry

Years at Hutchinson Community College: 13 years WHAT MAKES HUTCHCC SPECIAL TO YOU? There are two groups of people that make HutchCC special to me. The first group is my fellow science faculty, both past and present. I enjoy coming to work everyday with these people. The other group is the great students that I have in class and as advisees. These students challenge me every day and make HutchCC the great place it is to work at. WHAT IS THE ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU WOULD SHARE WITH PROSPECTIVE HUTCHCC STUDENTS?

For pre-health majors such as pharmacy, HutchCC is the best choice amongst community colleges in the state of Kansas. The faculty and facilities in the science department are second to none in the state of Kansas when one looks at community colleges. Lastly, a community college is devoted to teaching and not research. Class size is small and both lecture and labs are taught by your professors. This is in contrast to university classes, where labs and help sessions are led by graduate students, who have little vested interest in helping students to succeed.

Fire Science Mitigation Assistance with Wildfire

As part of its annual Spring Break Mitigation Exercise, Hutchinson Community College Fire Science students and personnel provided management and response to the wildfire in Comanche County. Comanche County, Kansas contacted Mitigation personnel requesting assistance in management of the Anderson Creek wildfire. Once on scene, the Mitigation team coordinated with the Oklahoma response on this incident. The Hutchinson Community College Fire Science students participating in the Mitigation project traveled with the Mitigation team as part of their training. Their participation in this wildfire response provided invaluable experience and real-life situational skills to their training. The project’s objectives continued to focus on firefighter and public safety while assisting local agencies. Many of the project’s mitigation goals in the Hutchinson area at Sand Hills, Prairie Dunes, and Dillon Nature Center were accomplished during the first part of the week. Plans for the remainder of the mitigation project in Hutchinson were suspended due to the critical need for resources at this incident.

Child Care Center - Employee Recognized

The HutchCC Child Care Center and staff member Darla Piepmeier have been recognized by the Down Syndrome Guild of Greater Kansas City (KCDSG) as a 2016 Community Champion. The recognition is in conjunction with the March 21 celebration of World Down Syndrome Day. Piepmeier was nominated by Jesse and Josh Ediger, whose son Lucas is a student at the Center. “Our family was thrilled to give this honor to the Child Care Center and Darla,” stated Jesse Ediger. “Our lives took a hard left turn the day Lucas was born. We are so thankful that we have encountered a facility and staff that value the importance of inclusion and value our son, Lucas. They see our son for who he is; they do not see our son with Down Syndrome and any limitations that may be attached to label.” The Down Syndrome Guild of Greater Kansas City is a non-profit organization whose mission is to provide support and resources for individuals with Down syndrome, their families and the professionals who serve them.

HutchCC Receives High Marks from HLC While accustomed to celebrating the academic achievements of those it serves, Hutchinson Community College recently earned high marks for its efforts. HutchCC has received notification from the Institutional Actions Council of the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) that its accredited status with the HLC has been continued. The College will remain fully accredited with no interim monitoring or reporting required. At its next regularly scheduled report in four years, HutchCC will emphasize the College’s continued focus on assessment, retention and performance goals, and planning. 8
