hree brothers met in a Paris cafe to celebrate the end of WWI and talk about life after war. They shared a desire to go back and literally build up America because infrastructure, they agreed, was the key to creating healthy communities. Four generations and almost 100 years later, Goodfellow Bros. hasn’t lost sight of its founders’ commitment to the communities in which their employees live and work. “Our company began in a rural area, building roads that would help farmers get crops to market, and kids to school,” says Chad Goodfellow, CEO. “We’ve seen how these simple activities can have a huge impact in peoples’ lives.” With Hawai‘i’s high cost of living and raising a family, many employees experience financial strain when sending their children to college. For this reason, Chad established the Goodfellow Bros. Scholarship at the Hawai’i Community Foundation (HCF) for its employees’ dependents. “Every part of this company’s DNA, from our humble beginnings to our Mission Statement, is about increasing community well-being and making a better future for our ‘ohana” he says. Partnering with HCF brings an added benefit, because whenever a student applies for any HCF-administered scholarship, he or she is automatically submitted as an applicant to more than 280 additional scholarships. Students and parents are often thrilled when they find out they’ll be receiving multiple scholarships, notes Tara Shibuya, HCF’s Senior Scholarship Officer. “Our hope with the Goodfellow Bros. Scholarship is these keiki will come back to Maui after graduation,” says Chad. “Having a degree in hand can help them start a business, or bring new skills to an industry. It increases their job opportunities and feelings of selfsufficiency, which helps keep a family together.” “These things will strengthen the community on Maui. Multiply that by how many scholarships we can provide over the years, and we will start to create major change. That’s what Goodfellow Bros. is all about.”
