Community Foundation Update (1/07/17) JANUARY 7, 2017

California The San Diego Foundation has announced that hundreds of scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $5,000 are available for San Diego students. The deadline to apply is 2:00 p.m. on February 1. Since 1997, the foundation's Community Scholarship Program has awarded more than $26 million in scholarships to thousands of students. Connecticut The Connecticut Community Foundation in Waterbury has announced grants totaling $92,000 to ten Connecticut organizations working to conserve and protect natural resources in the greater Waterbury and Litchfield Hills region. Recipients include the Connecticut League of Conservation Voters Education Fund, the Flanders Nature Center and Land Trust, the Pomperaug River Watershed Coalition, and the Watertown Land Trust. Hawai'i The Hawai'i Community Foundation has received more than $1 million for an endowment within a donor-advised fund established by the Aloha Angels group in Kauai, the Garden Island reports. The funding will provide support for the Adopt a Teacher and Adopt an AfterSchool Club programs at local schools. Aloha Angels plans to eventually build a $25 million endowment, which would enable the group to award $1 million a year in support of the Kauai community. To that end, it is working to raise $9 million for the endowment and award an estimated $350,000 a year in support of education. Nebraska The Omaha Community Foundation has launched a data-driven initiative designed to identify local issues in need of more attention, the Omaha World-Herald reports. The Landscape website will draw on existing public data to create a data snapshot of issues related to health, neighborhoods, safety, transportation, workforce, and education. In addition to helping the foundation’s donors, data from the Landscape can be used by nonprofits in their marketing appeals, while citizens and community leaders can use the site to identify key needs and disparities when designing programs and policies.
