Zimmermann’s ohana sets service for Friday Star-Advertiser staff February 27, 2017 A memorial service for Wally Zimmermann, a longtime Honolulu television news director, has been scheduled for Friday in Hawaii Kai. The memorial will begin at 4:30 p.m. at the boat ramp at Maunalua Bay Beach Park. The family requests no flowers or lei. Later in the evening, Zimmermann’s family plans to privately take canoes out to scatter his ashes in Maunalua Bay. Meanwhile, citing “Wally’s contribution to journalism in Hawaii,” the Hawaii Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists announced Sunday that it has named its television internships for college students the Wally Zimmermann Internships in Television Broadcast Journalism. SPJ said Zimmermann had “fathered many television news reporters’ careers.” The first two Zimmermann internships will be at KHON 2-TV and Hawaii News Now this year. Zimmermann’s family has set up a memorial fund at the Hawaii Community Foundation to support the internships. Zimmermann was news director at KHON for 5-1/2 years until 1987, and at KITV from 1988 to 2001. He died Jan. 5 at his home near Nashville, Tenn., 10 days after being diagnosed with a form of liver cancer.
