Community foundation will do statewide planting of breadfruit trees By: Web Staff Posted: Dec 01, 2015 02:14 PM HST Updated: Dec 01, 2015 02:14 PM HST Hundreds of ma'afala -- otherwise known as breadfruit -- trees will be planted across the state. The Hawaii Giving Grove is part of an anniversary project of the Hawaii Community Foundation, which will have been around for 100 years in 2016. A total of 740 charitable donations have been set up through the foundation, which is why they'll be planting that same number of breadfruit trees throughout the state, specifically 545 on Oahu, 50 on Kauai, 72 on Maui and 73 on Hawaii Island. "We're hoping they will offer fruits to people in their neighborhoods, the homeless, to people who really need the food and sustenance, said foundation president/CEO Kelvin Taketa. "That way, funds are not only being set up at the community foundation, but there is another way the foundation is giving back to the community."
