FLEX 2016 Top 10 Things You Can Do to Improve Your Proposal 1. Read the entire Request for Proposal (RFP). Each year we review and revise the RFP based on your feedback and our learning experiences. Please do not assume this is the same application as last year. 2. Watch the webinar. The webinars are developed to provide you with additional background and insights on the RFP and application process, especially what to consider in the narrative questions. 3. Apply as an organization. The FLEX grant program was developed to support high‐ performing nonprofit organizations with unrestricted operating support. With this perspective, we are assessing the entire organization’s performance and health, not on a specific program. If you write your proposal from the perspective of a single program, it is likely to be denied. 4. Articulate why your programs, services, or activities are the best way to accomplish your mission. All nonprofits have missions they care deeply about and various programs implemented to achieve these missions. Help your application stand out by being articulate and explicit about why your organization picked the programs, services, or activities you did out of all the other ones you could have offered or pursued. How did you come to the selection of these program, services, or activities? Why these over others? Be as thorough as possible and use any available data or research to support your responses. 5. Fill out the “Organization’s Program Information” accurately. In Section 4 of the RFP, there are three questions (1. Headquarters Location, 2. Service Location, and 3. Specific Geographic Community) that request you to select the location of your organization. Although this may appear redundant, each question has a specific purpose and allows us to match your application to all of the funding sources that you are eligible.
