“Giving back to the community was emphasized in our upbringing,” Joy Miura Koerte said, reflecting on a philanthropy activity that their dad led during a family vacation. Joy learned the power of philanthropy as a college scholarship recipient. “I didn’t really know what HCF was, but I was in awe of this great place that made these funds available,” she said. Once she graduated and returned home to start a public relations business, she
got her clients and family in on giving through HCF. HCF manages three funds for the family — theTad and Margaret Miura Fund (started by their grandparents), the Deja Vu Surf Hawai‘i Scholarship fund (initiated through the family business), and the Rise Up Scholarship Fund (started by Joy’s sister, Sara, for Kaua‘i students of divorced parents).
