Creating CHANGE For All... And For Always Nonprofits get creative about fundraising together

Kahanu Garden and Preserve is one of ten organizations that benefit from the Hāna Community Endowment Fund

A group of nonprofits working together to support each other – when everyone’s competing for the same donor dollars – doesn’t happen every day. When ten organizations in Hāna approached the Hawai‘i Community Foundation with the idea of creating one endowment fund that would benefit each organization equally, as well as all of the Hāna community, the stakeholders knew they were taking a big risk. Yet, all agreed the rewards of working together were worth it, and to prove their belief, the Hāna Community Endowment Fund kicked off with the ambitious goal of raising $1M. Fast forward to 2016, when a grant from an anonymous donor was matched dollar-for-dollar by hundreds of donations from everyone wanting to give back to Hāna – and the fund reached its goal. “The Hāna Fund is a heartwarming story, and a fantastic model of what can be accomplished when nonprofits work together,” says Inger Tully, Senior. Philanthropy Officer with the Hawai‘i Community Foundation. “They continue to meet, to learn more about each other’s work, and fundraise jointly toward their new goal of $2M. It is an inspiration and a privilege to work with them.”

“In a world where so many nonprofits have to compete for funds, we work together to fundraise. The Hāna Fund provides a vehicle for donors to easily support all of our causes at once, rather than having to choose between us.” — Mike Opgenorth Kahanu Garden and Preserve, National Tropical Botanical Garden “The most valuable benefit is coming together with our community partners. We share similar challenges and suggestions. There’s a camaraderie. Mahalo for your support.” — Cynthia Santiago ‘Ohana Makamae “Hāna Arts is honored to be a part of this wonderful group and support our community. We leverage the funds to provide arts education to all our Hāna keiki through dance, music, drama and visual arts. Together, we bridge the gap for our rural community, but we can’t do it alone … it takes a village! — Becky Lind Hāna Arts
