Walter Haskins:
A Long Life Well Lived & A Legacy for the Future Long-time Maui resident Walter Haskins knew first-hand the power of education and the seemingly insurmountable obstacles that can sometimes stand in its way. His first wife, Margaret, enjoyed a long, successful career as a pharmacist after working her way through the Kansas community college system and University, all during the turmoil of the Great Depression. An unlikely accomplishment at the time, especially for a young woman, Margaret’s grit and determination set a course that ultimately defined Haskin’s legacy.
Margaret Haskins
It’s said that Margaret was immediately smitten with Hawai‘i when they first visited in 1973, but she died three years later not having fulfilled a dream of returning some day. Walter eventually remarried and he and his new wife, Peggy, retired to Maui where they made sure to honor Margaret’s life by setting up a scholarship for students from Maui Community College looking to continue their education at a four year school.
“Mr. Haskins made sure his life’s work left a legacy to inspire academic success for the young people of his adopted home.” They established a second scholarship in 2005 in Margaret’s memory, and a third fund in 2012 upon Walter’s death. Through the three funds, the Haskins provided more than 43 scholarships amounting to over $150,000 so far. They opened doors for Hawai‘i’s youth to get the kind of education so valued by the Haskins family.
