Walter Haskins — Honoring a Life’s Achievements and Making a Difference for Future Generations For most of us, one true love is life’s best gift. Long-time Maui resident Walter Haskins had three loves: his first wife, Margaret, with whom he first visited Hawai‘i in 1973 but who then passed in 1976; his second wife, Peggy, with whom he eventually retired to Maui and put down roots; and his passion for education, particularly for Hawai‘i’s young people looking to better themselves and make a difference in their community. Margaret Haskins worked her way through Kansas’s community college and university system during the Great Depression, and then went on to launch a
successful career as a pharmacist. Her story, overcoming tremendous odds to achieve her dreams, inspired Haskins and his wife Peggy to establish three scholarship funds at the Hawai‘i Community Foundation. One of the funds provides scholarships for students of Maui Community College looking to continue their education at a four-year in-state school. The second fund is available to those attending any four-year school in Hawai‘i. And the third fund targets young people seeking a degree from Kansas State with plans to return to Hawai‘i. The three funds have provided more than $150,000 through 43 scholarships, opening doors so that Hawai‘i’s next generations can get the education they deserve. A life well lived, a gift to future generations — that’s the big promise of little things.
Mr. Haskins made sure his life’s work left a legacy to remember Margaret’s accomplishments and to inspire academic success for the young people of Maui
