PROFESSIONAL ADVISORS EXEMPLIFY COMMUNITY-MINDEDNESS Hawai‘i Community Foundation Honors Four Exceptional Individuals On Thursday, November 1, the Hawai‘i Community Foundation (HCF) recognized four exceptional individuals for their commitment to philanthropy in their personal and professional lives. This year’s Outstanding Professional Advisor in Philanthropy Awards reception took place at the Hawai‘i Community Foundation in Honolulu, and was attended by 200 Hawai‘i-based legal, financial and tax advisors. “Every year we come together to celebrate some of Hawai‘i’s most valuable advisors in the professional community,” said Jen-L Lyman, director of philanthropic partnerships at HCF. “These professionals assist their clients with charitable contributions and remind us all, that no matter what our role is, there is something we can each do to strengthen the future of our island state.” The outstanding Professional Advisor in Philanthropy awardees represent statewide advisory firms with offices on Kaua‘i, Maui and O‘ahu: 2018 – Professional Advisor in Philanthropy Awardees • Gregg Takara, Senior Vice President, Morgan Stanley • Meg Obenauf, Obenauf Law Group • Rhonda L. Griswold, Partner, Cades Schutte LLP • Alan M. Okamoto, Nakamoto, Okamoto & Yamamoto This year’s event atmosphere was reminiscent of a “family reunion” and remarks echoed that theme. “What I love to see, when I help families with their planning, is when the adult children pay it forward,” said 2018 awardee Rhonda Griswold, partner at Cades Schutte. “They will ask ‘what are the charities that mom or dad really valued?’ and then make a gift in their honor.” The family reunion feeling carried through to a cookbook with time-honored family recipes, family photos, and “recipes for success” from past awardees and HCF staff. “The Hawai‘i Community Foundation supports professional advisors in Hawai‘i with the latest information about charitable giving, the nonprofit sector and funding partnerships that are making an impact,” said Lyman. “You could almost say we are like that close friend or family member you call when you have a question about something specific.”
