CONNECTING TO OUR ISLANDS’ HISTORY

Centuries after he ruled Kaua‘i and Ni‘ihau, King Kaumuali’i remains a beloved figure on these islands. So when the Kaua‘i Change Comes Museum had a once-in-a-lifetime From Everyone opportunity to recreate his royal cloak by a master feather worker, they jumped at the chance to make it happen. “We are a humble people, “Kaumuali‘i was but this brings back our like our Duke deep-rooted pride. Fashioned in exacting detail, es down to the natural red tones that symbolized his royal lineage, the cloak drapes seven feet long and is infused with more than 250,000 feathers from the pelts of 20,000 Lady Amherst’s pheasants. “At the unveiling ceremony, kumu hula and Hawaiian societies packed the room.
