My name is Claire Hundley and I am an Interior Design student at Virginia Tech. Since a young age, I knew I wanted to be a designer, but it wasn’t until I started my career at Virginia Tech that I really fell in love with design. I had no idea of the immense possibilities and opportunities which come with design. I enjoy creating spaces that leave a lasting and positive impact on an individual even after they have left the space. I am particularly interested in K-12/higher education design, as well as hospitality. I am working to complete a minor in Psychology, which I see as a very important tool for designing spaces in order to better understand the user while creating a positive experience. When I am not designing, I enjoy singing, photography, practicing ukelele or piano, and spending time outside. Thank you for taking the time to review my work.

HEART OF HOZHO IDEC Competition Group Project Richmond, VA Fall 2021 . 3 Weeks . 1,072 sq ft In collaboration with Alice Sandoval, Carly Billak, and Maeve Lyman Hozho: a sense of harmony and balance with one’s surroundings. This space relies on the usage of symbiotic relationships to create a balance between the live and work environment. Arranged in weaving patterns to reflect the culture of the Navajo textile artist, these spaces mutually benefit each other and establish a sense of Hozho. Symbiotic relationships within Heart of Hozho can also be seen between culture and community, interior and nature, and industrial and handmade. Multifunctional, interconnected spaces are highlighted in an effort to provide sustainable solutions to modern housing and retail environments. The showroom space on the commercial side of the design is an open plan with plenty of space for people to walk around while maintaining a physical distance from others. This ensures that proper health and safety measures are considered through the circulation. The materials used throughout the space contain the antimicrobial features necessary to maintain a clean and healthy space overtime.

The prompt given required us to configure three shipping containers in order to create a showroom/retail space as well as a living space for the client. In order to highlight and celebrate the importance of the Navajo culture in our design, we focused on creating a space that exhibited symbiotic relationships, both in materiality and layout. The looms were placed in the center of the showroom to mimic the family hearth in a traditional Navajo home but also to create circular movement throughout the space.

North Henry Street
West Broad Street
Located in the heart of Richmond, Virginia, 504 West Broad Street is among many shops and restaurants that attract high levels of foot traffic. Richmond is a growing area that fosters a very diverse and friendly community. The corner location of the site allows brand visibility from two streets as well as lots of natural light in the storefront area. Broad Appetit, a local farmers market on West Broad Street, is a large celebration of food, gathering, and culture that brings in many shoppers every Sunday in the summer.
One of the most important factors to our design was the zigzag pattern created by our container configuration. This zig-zag pattern is very apparent in most Navajo weavings, which is why we wanted to showcase this within our exterior perspective, site plan, axonometric view, and logo. The zig-zag is also representative of the symbiotic relationship between the 3 main spaces, and shows how the flex space acts as a transition between the commercial and residential sectors of the design.

The kitchen and dining area is located adjacent to the outdoor lounge area in order to provide convinient travel between the spaces. Sliding glass doors make the spaces feel connected, as well as the interior to the exterior. Additional shelving was added at the end of the hallway to maximize storage.
The garage door and glass walkway make the interior living space feel connected to the outdoor living space and the kitchen/dining area. A skylight provides additional natural light to further limit the use of electricity and contribute to the overall sustainability of the project.
NOOK COWORKING Haworth sponsered co-working office Roanoke, VA Fall 2021 . 5 Weeks . 7,500 sq ft Nook™ is a co-working service which aims to provide a variety of comfortable and practical workspaces in order to enhance the workplace environment for the working class. The workplace/office environment post-pandemic has seen many adaptations since the general public has gone back to the office. Although the pandemic has changed our lives forever, it has taught us a lot about design, especially in the work place. During lockdown and after most returned to work, depression and anxiety rates rose from 11% to 41.1%. The intent of this design is to create a working environment which combats depression and anxiety through various ways and strategies. In order to overcome the issues and struggles individuals face from depression and anxiety disorders, the design utilizes biophilia to enhance mood and health, bright but not overwhelming colors, differing but cohesive materiality, and living areas throughout the space.
These
“living rooms” implemented in the space work towards the effort of creating a home-office environment.
The design is
inspired by the Roanoke Mill Mountain Star in Virginia, which is displayed not only in the angular layout of the floor plan, but also in materiality. Overall, this design will help to boost mood, productivity, and health, and build a strong community within
the
already
tight-knit
community
of
Roanoke.

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT AND PARTI
Inspiration for this project was drawn mostly from a historic landmark in Roanoke VA. Constructed in 1949, the Roanoke Star was originally meant to be a Christmas decoration. However, after it was first illuminated, the city decided to keep it up year round. The significance lies in the meaning the star created for the town of Roanoke. It was the brightest and most powerful symbol of Roanoke, and continues to be an important part of Roanokes history. In order to incoroporate the star into my design, I took inspiration from the colors of the star, as well as the exterior angles which play a crutial part in the spatial layout and interventions of the space.
Inspiration for the concept was also taken from “astrocytes” which are small, star-shaped neurons within the brain. Astrocytes are the most abundant neuron in the brain and contribute to helping us maintain homeostasis. However, astrocytes are less pertinent in individuals who suffer from anxiety/ depression. Through my research, I found that scientists are currently researching different ways to promote development of astrocytes, and there are ways to do this through design.

Taking inspiration from both the roanoke star and star shaped neurons, this parti diagram shows the central, leading line of the star, with spectrals breaking off to denote each of the different main spaces within the entire office.

INSPIRATION SKETCHES
The logo created shows off the angularity inspired from the Roanoke star, and displays the branding in a conceptual and memorable way for the user.
The Roanoke star was used within the majority of this design, specifically the front desk structure, lighting fixtures, and spacial layout.

“LIVING ROOM” SPACES
In order to further elaborate on the decision to combat depression and anxiety within the workplace, this design implements “living rooms” throughout the space. These living areas help encourage workers to take a step away from their work in order to maintain a helathy and balanced lifestyle, which in turn will increase an individuals productivity and boost their mood. Using differing materiality and color, such as soft and hard surfaces, light and dark colors, biophilia, and ambient, privacy lighting help the user feel more at home.

BROADCAST YOU Social Media/Tech Company satellite office Washington D.C. Fall 2021 . 5 Weeks . 5,000 sq ft The concept for this project was inspired by the millions of individuals who make up the expansive and diverse community that is Youtube.
Located in Washington D.C.,
the local community this office serves is also vast and diverse. In order to accommodate and appretiate both of these communities, the materiality and furniture layouts help individuals spark conversation to further apply the brand ideals of YouTube to everyday life. Along with their brand, YouTube has always been evolving. Valuing the four “F’s” of YouTube, freedom of expression, freedom of information, freedom of opportunity, and freedom to belong, this office furthers those ideals and is built to constantly evolve alongside YouTube. A key component that was kept in mind during space planning was the concept of modularity. Modularity can have many meanings, but specifically for this project, it emphasizes the relationship of part to whole. The iconic play button of the YouTube logo plays a big role in the space planning of this office building and contributed to certain factors such as lighting, furniture, and spatial diagramming. To celebrate the unique qualities of the wide range of YouTube employees, this space combines individualism with collectivisim, in order to ultimately foster an environment of support, creativity, and collaboration. Each employee is celebrated and heard in this environment.

The materiality selected for this space contributes to the concept of recognizing the people who put the YOU in YouTube. Mirrors were used throughout the space in design elements as well as functional elements. The cholor scheme plays off of YouTube’s already strong branding, including black, white, and red. The famous play button of YouTube is also used as inspiration in the benching space, dining tables, and the custom lighting within the lobby.

The front desk and entry area was intended to showcase the importance of the individuals who put the YOU in YouTube. This was possible through strong branding along with materiality displayed on the reception desk as well as the intervention behind the desk
