Welcome to the 34th Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival! I have long admired the work of Danish composer Bent Sørensen and I am delighted that he is this year’s Composer in Residence. When Sørensen’s music has been heard in the UK it has tended to concentrate on the more ‘classical’ elements in his work. There is however a more experimental and conceptual side to Sørensen’s practice which has rarely been presented outside of the Nordic countries, and it is this that I have tried to encapsulate at .

Our international programme is made possible through the Music Information Centre Norway and the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Danish Arts Council, the Danish Arts Foundation, the Danish Composer’s Society Production Pool/KODA’s Fund for Social and Cultural Purposes, SNYK, the Goethe Institute, the Performing Arts Fund NL, Diaphonique, and Réseau Varèse. My thanks of course go to all our partners, and full details can be found throughout the brochure.

My interest in Sørensen has led me to discover a rich depth to Denmark’s current generation of composers who form the centre of a vibrant music scene – many of whom are strongly influenced and inspired by Sørensen. This major survey of trends in Danish new music is one of the key elements 2011. in

It is the audience of course which each year provides that unique Huddersfield atmosphere, and once again my thanks go to all of you who are taking the time to read this brochure. I look forward to welcoming you to Huddersfield in November.

Partnerships are at the core of and I would like to thank the University of Huddersfield, the British Council, and BBC Radio 3.

Best Wishes Graham McKenzie Artistic Director

Indeed, the programme explores the ‘Nordic sound’ with concerts from many of Norway’s greatest ensembles and soloists, plus exciting new compositional voices from Iceland.

Learning & Participation

Discovering music is at the heart of ’s ethos and this year we have already been busy delivering some exciting projects as part of our Learning & Participation Programme. We’re also delighted that our work in this area can continue to develop thanks to a three-year award from the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation. The start of the year saw us exploring the sonic properties of Yorkshire Forced Rhubarb with pupils from Overthorpe Junior, Infant and Early Years School! Funded by The Ernest Cook Trust and The Michael Tippett Musical Foundation, Rhubarb, rhubarb, rhubarb drew upon time-lapse photography of the plants’ growth at a nearby farm, along with audio recordings of the distinctive ‘pop’ made as new buds burst open. Pupils made recordings of rhubarb being ‘played’ in a variety of ways, before using Soundplant editing and performance software to create their own sound pieces. The project also

included other rhubarb-related activities such as tasting sessions and sharing rhubarb recipes. The project is documented on a mini website at www. rhubarbrhubarbrhubarb.co.uk; sound artist Duncan Chapman will also be showcasing work from the project on Thursday 24 November (p. 39) During the summer holidays we’ve been delivering an eclectic series of music workshops for children and young people with disabilities supported by Kirklees Council, as well as hosting a three-day course for young musicians exploring improvisation in jazz and classical Indian music traditions, promoted by the South Asian Music Youth Orchestra (SAMYO) and the National Youth Jazz Collective. You can hear the results of this exciting collaboration on Sunday 26 November (p. 47). During the Festival we are thrilled to present our second Family Morning (p. 50),

Iannis Xenakis: Spherical Worlds Launch event

Huddersfield Art Gallery 4pm Launch Event Open daily throughout the Festival; Monday – Friday 10am – 5pm, Saturday & Sunday 10am – 4pm

To accompany the focus upon Iannis Xenakis’s music at 2011 comes an exhibition telling the story of a man whose talents were too many to be confined to one sphere. Sixteen displays highlight aspects of Xenakis’s life, from his turbulent youth in wartime Greece, to his achievements as an architect, composer, researcher, mathematician and thinker. At the same time, the exhibition reveals how his advances in areas such as spatialisation, stochastics and multimedia performance earned him the status of one of the 20th-century’s most vital artistic figures. Produced by supported by Réseau Varèse; exhibition designed by the Centre de documentation de la musique contemporaine (Cdmc) in collaboration with Sharon Kanach, at the request of Les Amis de Xenakis. Installation: Huddersfield November 2011 Bates Mill Courtyard 5pm Launch Event Open daily throughout the Festival; 10am - 5pm plus just prior to concerts at Bates Mill

‘In recent years I have worked increasingly in collaboration with other art forms. Through this, all the hidden stories and pictures – which have always been in my music – have become clearer, and the visual and narrative dimension suddenly became an important counterpoint to my music. Over a long period when I was writing the full-length opera, Under the Sky, it was not possible to write any other music – so I started to challenge the concert form by making concerts of my own music, which I now increasingly see as Concert Installations rather than as concert programmes. The step from these Concert Installations to a fully-fledged sound installation is very short and natural. The most important thing for me when I create a sound installation is that I change the sound installation genre to become my music – not the other way round.’ Bent Sørensen Produced by supported by The Danish Arts Council, The Danish Arts Foundation, Danish Composers Society’s Production Pool / KODA’s Fund for Social and Cultural Purposes and SNYK

1 Trondheim Soloists + Frode Haltli ‘It is pain flowing down slowly on a white wall – the title – was given to me by a Hungarian woman in August 2008. She put a note with the sentence in my hand after a festival and told me that my music reminded her of the sentence, written by a Hungarian poet. It is music full of slow motion – full of sorrow – full of tangos with no dancers. Maybe I imagined the tears of an accordion player flowing down slowly on the bellow of the instrument.’ Bent Sørensen Produced by supported by Music Information Centre Norway, Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, The Danish Arts Council, The Danish Arts Foundation, Danish Composers Society’s Production Pool / KODA’s Fund for Social and Cultural Purposes and SNYK

The Oslo/Triptych (for flute, clarinet, percussion, piano and string quartet) is the second work in a set of three triptychs – the first of which, The Leuven Triptych, received its UK premiere at 2009. The titles refer on the one hand simply to the source of the commission and on the other to the etymological origin of the word ‘triptych’ whereby ‘tri’ and ‘ptychÄ“‘ mean ‘three’ and ‘folds’ in ancient Greek.

Growing in the Dark (Duncan Chapman) uses a series of recordings of rhubarb collected as part of the Rhubarb Rhubarb Rhubarb project with Overthorpe Junior school (www.rhubarbrhubarbrhubarb.co.uk). One of the characteristics of the way in which the Rhubarb is forced in this part of Yorkshire is the distinct ‘popping’ sound it makes as the growing buds expand. This piece is entirely composed of these sounds, which have been manipulated to reveal a hidden world of organic sounds stemming from this characteristically local source. Georg Friedrich Haas Schweigen (Movement I and II) UK Premiere

Luigi Nono ¿Dónde Estás Hermano? Luigi Nono La fabbrica illuminata Gert Henning-Jensen tenor Oscar Henning-Jensen boy soprano Guido Paevatalu baritone Frederik Munk Larsen guitar Andreas Borregaard accordion Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart

The title Saudades Inocentes is probably best translated to mean ‘Innocent Yearnings’, but the Portuguese word ‘Saudade’ indicates something far stronger than a ‘common’ longing after something or someone. It is often a desperate longing after that which cannot be reached, either because it is not to be found or because it has been lost forever. The work is written for three male voices – boy, young man and older man. From a landscape of loudspeakers, a feminine universe of women’s voices and steps flows as a mist beneath and around these three. Through the work’s six movements all the voices – the boy, the little girl, women and men – sing against and with one another. Music by Georg Friedrich Haas and Luigi Nono forms a haunting complement to Saudades Inocentes. Luigi Nono’s ¿Dónde Estás Hermano? (Brother Where Art Thou?) for two soprani, mezzo-soprano, and contralto was written in 1982 in honour of the disappeared in Argentina and the Madres de la Plaza de Mayo movement. La fabbrica illuminata (The Illuminated Factory), for voice and magnetic tape, is a commentary on social injustice and contains fragmented political chants accompanied by steel-on-steel sounds of machinery. Two movements from Georg Friedrich Haas’ Schweigen complete the programme – the first of which, a response to current world issues, is about the Fukushima nuclear disaster in Japan. Produced by supported by The Danish Arts Council, The Danish Arts Foundation, Danish Composers Society’s Production Pool / KODA’s Fund for Social and Cultural Purposes, SNYK and Goethe Institut Saudades Inocentes is commissioned and produced by and SPOR festival
