A GRAND CELEBRATION: First National Bank president John Henry Luton (center) and employees are all smiles as they celebrate the bank’s 125th year - and the fact that,

collectively, they will be grand marshal in the Chamber of Commerce’s 4th of July parade.

Isn’t it grand? First National Bank tapped for parade honor BY JESSICA LEE HOOD COUNTY NEWS

The Chamber of Commerce has chosen First National Bank of Granbury to be grand marshal of the 4th of July Hometown Parade this year. Of course, a bank can’t exactly march in a parade. But the people who have helped make it an important part of the community can. Bank President John Henry Luton said that his

employees will be marching behind the Marines. “It’s a great honor,” he said. Luton started his banking career in 1974, and became president of First National 10 years later. The bank is celebrating its 125th year. “Parade grand marshal is a way to honor citizens and entities that have made extraordinary contributions to the betterment of Granbury and Hood County,” said Chamber President Mike Scott. Granbury’s Fourth of July Celebration

Founded by two Texas pioneers, First National first opened its doors on the courthouse square in 1883. Today, the bank has seven branches throughout Hood County. The bank has been a supporter of the Granbury Independent School District, United Way of Hood County and the American Cancer Society Relay for Life.

MUSICAL HISTORY: Thomas Jefferson (center, played by Rick Rainey) tries to convince Ben Franklin (left, Tony Hedges) and John Adams (played by Ben Lokey) to sign the Declaration of Independence in the musical comedy “1776.”

Musical planned in historic courthouse BY RICK MAUCH HOOD COUNTY NEWS

W

hat would the Fourth of July be without a visit from Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin and such? They will all be in Granbury on that historic day -- well, in character that is -- as the Granbury Theatre Company will present the musical “1776.” The show will be staged in the historic Hood County Courthouse. It opened June 22 with a pair of performances that weekend, has two this weekend (July 29-30), two shows on the Fourth of July, and wraps up with two on July 6-7. “I love this show,” said Andrew Barrus, execu-

tive director of the GTC. “It seemed like a perfect fit to do this show at the old courthouse, and to do it built around the Fourth of July.” Aside from the enjoyment aspect of the very popular musical, Barrus said those attending the show will get something of a history lesson -- of a different kind. “It gives the audience an opportunity to look at these characters as human beings,” he said. “The audience can share what they went through, being accused of treason, fighting for freedom. “First of all, it’s a great show. And if you like history, it’s a chance to delve into this story in a different light. At the end of the day it’s a musical theater piece, but why not get some historical perspective at the same time?” Barrus said the idea to do the show actually

arrived to him when he first got a glimpse of the courtroom in the old courthouse. “When I walked into the courtroom and saw that space, I said to myself, this is it, we have to do this show here,” he said. The cast is a mixture of locals and folks from around the Metroplex and even beyond, said Barrus. Ben Lokey is playing John Adams, Tony Hedges is Ben Franklin, Rick Rainey is Thomas Jefferson, Julie Johnson is Abigail Adams, and Meredith Browning is Martha Jefferson. Following the evening performance, Barrus said there will be a laser light show on the square. It will, likewise, have a patriotic theme.

“There will be all kinds of music. It will be very much like you are watching fireworks,” said Barrus. “It’s going to be unique, and a lot of fun.” speditor@hcnews.com |817-573-7066, ext. 256

On the Lake BY MARK WILSON HOOD COUNTY NEWS

B

razos River Authority (BRA) rangers on Lake Granbury are working toward a goal that likely matches what many average boaters want. “Obviously, we want everybody to have a safe, fun holiday, said Chief Lake Ranger Steve Myers, who noted that BRA rangers, as well as area game wardens, will be patrolling the water in Hood County to enforce boating safety laws during this holiday week. The Fourth of July falls on Wednesday this year, so Myers predicted busy weekends leading up to and following the holiday. Myers said routine, random boat safety checks will be made – so be prepared, and don’t be surprised when it happens. In most cases, if everything is in order, the boat safety checks (for details go online to http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/fishboat/boat/safety/vessel_requirements/) should take only about a minute or so. “Our goal is to not write tickets, Myers said. “Our goal is not to have anybody injured or killed. We historically have safe holidays without major incidents. Myers said there are two key reasons Lake Granbury has had a good safety record. “A good portion of the folks are familiar with the lake, and familiar with us (the BRA), Myers said before adding, “our officers are very vigilant in conducting those safety checks.

BEACH BEAT: With the popular City Beach expected to be even more crowded during Fourth of July celebrations, Granbury police officers are planning foot and bike patrols to ensure public safety.

Extra security for holiday BY KATHY CRUZ HOOD COUNTY NEWS

T

he City Beach is a popular spot on any summer day, but the Fourth of July crowds can make it seem as if there’s not a square inch of sand unoccupied. To help ensure everyone’s safety during the days-long Independence Day celebration, the city has hired security officers to patrol the beach. As well, Granbury police officers will be doing bike and foot patrols. “Their presence alone helps, said Granbury Police Chief Mitch Galvan, noting that issues that have occurred in the past have been relatively minor. No alcohol is allowed on the City Beach, per city ordinance. Those who violate the ordinance can be charged with a Class C misdemeanor, Galvan said. City Attorney Stuart Neal recently researched whether the city can prohibit alcohol on the

City Beach, since it is in the historic district and pedestrians are allowed to stroll the historic district with an open container of alcohol. However, Galvan said that alcohol is allowed only when it is an event that requires a permit. “The City Beach is a park, and there is no alcohol allowed in city parks, the chief said. “Most people know that you can’t have (alcohol) there. We watch it very closely. We’re going to have people from out of town that don’t know, and we’ll have to deal with that. In addition to problems that could be posed by public intoxication, it is unsafe to combine alcohol consumption with heat and swimming. Galvan said the Texas heat will not deter officers from patrolling the beach and historic district to ensure public safety during the holiday celebration. “My guys are outstanding professionals, and they don’t complain, he said. “They know they’ve got a job to do, and they go do it.

MartinĘźs Funeral Home provides a Fourth of July staple BY KATHY CRUZ HOOD COUNTY NEWS

It has long been a tradition for Granbury and Hood County to celebrate the Fourth of July holiday in a big way. And it has long been a tradition for Martin’s Funeral Home to be a part of that tradition. For decades, the funeral home at Morgan and Pearl Streets has erected two 15x15-foot canopies to shield parade watchers from the wilting Texas sun. Co-owner Dwight Johnson said that one canopy is always reserved for Trinity Mission Health & Rehab of Granbury. The other is for people of

all ages to enjoy. “I’ve been here at 7 o’clock on the morning of the parade, and there are already people staking their claim, Johnson said. The canopies don’t come down until the next day. Though one canopy is reserved strictly for older folks, Martin’s adds to the parade experience of youngsters by providing free lemonade and cookies. And the funeral home offers one other important thing for people of all ages: “We allow the people that want to come in and use the restroom to do so, said Johnson.
