LOSE WEIGHT.
Change your life.
The benefits of weight-loss surgery go beyond what the eye can see. If you are 100 pounds or more overweight, weight-loss surgery may be safer than continuing to carry around those extra pounds. National Institutes of Health found that individuals that have had surgery were less likely to develop, and more likely to recover from, diabetes and other heart disease risk factors. It may also help improve the body’s ability to control sugar levels and help lower the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, and stroke. Bradley Hart, M.D., Ph.D., a member of the medical staff at Lake Granbury Medical Center (LGMC), can help you find hope and discover a whole new and healthier you. Bradley Hart, Dr. Hart performs LAP-BAND® weight-loss M.D., PhD surgery. In fact, Dr. Hart is the only surgeon General Surgeon in north Texas using daVinci® robot-assisted technology to perform the surgery, which can mean:
4
LAP-BAND® is the first adjustable banding device approved by the FDA. This system does not require any cutting or stapling of the stomach. The band, which is placed around the upper portion of the stomach like a belt, helps reduce the stomach’s capacity by restricting the amount of food you are able to eat at one time. Plus, it helps you feel full faster and stay full longer. After surgery, the device can be loosened or tightened in the physician’s office to help maintain and ensure optimal weight loss. Since spring 2011, Dr. Hart has performed over 25 LAP-BAND® procedures. If you are interested in learning more about what LAPBAND® can offer you, attend one of LGMC’s FREE informational seminars. Dealing with everyday aches and pains As a woman, you most likely experience aches and pains from your daily activities no matter what your lifestyle entails. In fact, a recent study shows 89 percent of women experience some type of muscle or joint pain every year, and 63 percent experience it weekly, according to ProAct, an independent marketing research firm. But whether the discomfort stems from a day at work, strenuous exercise or housework, pain has its price -- from feeling tired and low on energy, to contributing to feelings of stress, depression and frustration. Before discomfort gets the better of you, reduce your risk for pain and relieve the aches you already have with these simple measures:
AVOID OVEREXERTION Don’t save all your heavy-duty chores for one weekend, especially if you’re not regularly active. If you suddenly spend the whole day cleaning out your basement, or
climbing ladders to clear gutters, muscle strain or overexertion is highly likely, because you have to let muscles build up gradually. The same goes for working out. Consult a physician or fitness professional to build an exercise routine safely.
RELAX Hot baths, gentle stretching and meditation can help prevent and relieve stressrelated muscle tension and stiffness. Even if it means putting the kids to bed early or turning your phone off for an hour, incorporate stress-free down time into your busy day, every day.
MAINTAIN A HEALTHY WEIGHT Excess weight puts undue stress on joints. Try a diet that promotes joint and tissue heath. Eat foods high in Omega-3 fatty acids like salmon. Add flaxseeds to salads or try cooking with mustard seed, ginger, turmeric

or cayenne pepper, all of which have anti-inflammatory properties and health benefits. The “Mediterranean Diet” has been touted in recent years. Women in Italy and Greece set a good example by serving foods that are rich in heart-healthy antioxidants and good fats. Nuts, whole grains, fish and olives are hearty and heart-healthy foods. Mediterranean cultures also use wine to improve heart health, help prevent cancer and slow the progression of neurological diseases, like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. Studies have also shown that moderate amounts of alcohol can raise your good cholesterol and thin your blood.

stem more from daily activities like sitting at a computer too long than from injuries. Be sure to take periodic walking breaks or sit on a ball to keep muscles activated. While modern life has created challenges that lead to aches and pains, women don’t need to grin and bear it. By adopting these healthy habits and taking proper care of yourself, you can avoid pain and treat aches naturally before they get out of hand.

LGMC chest pain accreditation and heart disease in women Lake Granbury Medical Center (LGMC), building on its long-established reputation of improving the access to quality healthcare – close to home – is now certified as an accredited Chest Pain Center. The majority are centered in large metropolitan areas throughout the state. LGMC, primarily serving Hood, Somervell, and Erath counties, is one of the smallest rural hospitals to achieve such distinction. Only about 12 percent of hospitals in the United States hold Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care (formerly Society of Chest Pain Center) accreditation. This designation means that any patient who comes to LGMC experiencing chest pain can be confident he or she is receiving care that meets or exceeds the highest national standards of care. Positive patient outcomes depend on timely intervention, diagnosis, and treatment. To minimize the risk of permanent heart damage, the American College of Cardiology recommends physicians reestablish blood flow to the heart with a balloon angioplasty within 90 minutes of admission to the Emergency Department. In 2011, LGMC’s average door-toballoon time was 52 minutes. So far, in 2012, the average is 28 minutes. This means heart muscle saved and probability of survival increased. The investment in establishing an Accredited Chest Pain Center demonstrates LGMC’s ongoing commitment to providing superior team-centered cardiac care. LGMC’s skilled team of cardiologists, ER physicians, and nurses, integration with local emergency response teams, advanced technology and exceptional response time to cardiac emergencies give patients the best chance of survival and recovery. LGMC’s Cardiac Cath Lab has been open since June 2009. It continually promotes protocolbased medicine and the adoption of process improvement science to address heart attacks and acute heart failure. The SCPC Chest Pain Center granted LGMC a full three-year accreditation.
HEART ATTACK AND WOMEN
8
According to the American Heart Association,
coronary heart disease is the leading cause of death in women. Heart attacks and their aftermath tend to be more deadly in women. About one-quarter more women than men die within a year of having a heart attack. This may happen because women are generally older than men when they suffer heart attacks. Also, women don't respond as well as men to the treatments usually prescribed during or after a heart attack. For many women, a heart attack may feel like a strange discomfort in the back or some other easily ignored sign, instead of crushing chest pain. When women do go to the hospital, doctors may miss the diagnosis of heart attack because the symptoms are vague. Without a definite diagnosis, a woman may be sent home thinking that her symptoms don't mean anything serious. Studies confirm that heart disease may differ in women in ways that doctors may not realize. Heart disease, in many women doesn't occur from obvious blockages in arteries as it does in men. Instead, for women, plaque spreads evenly along the artery wall or in the smaller arteries— areas hidden from an angiogram, the standard imaging test that measures blood flow in the big arteries.
SUBTLE SYMPTOMS In women with this problem, which is called coronary microvascular syndrome, blood flow to the heart falls dangerously low. But they don't often feel the "elephant-on-the-chest" pain that takes place when large arteries shut down. Instead, they may have subtle symptoms. They may feel pressure or squeezing or shortness of breath. Symptoms may even pop up elsewhere in the body, such as the jaw. (This symptom of jaw pain can also appear in men having a heart attack.) Many women with microvascular disease may continue to have symptoms and become sicker. They may be at an increased risk for heart attack within five years. Some experts suggest that hormonal changes associated with aging or inflammation may explain why women's smaller blood vessels don't
work right. The stage for heart disease is set before menopause by factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, extra weight (especially around the waist), and smoking—all factors that play a part in plaque buildup.
WARNING SIGNS Women are more likely to have "nonclassic" heart attack symptoms than men. Still, doctors note, unexplained jaw, shoulder, back, or arm pain can also signal a man's heart attack even when the classic crushing chest pain is absent. These are the most common warning signals for heart attack: • Pain or discomfort in the center of the chest that lasts more than a few minutes, or goes away and comes back • Chest discomfort with sweating • Pain that spreads from the chest to the arm, neck, or jaw • Shortness of breath, tiredness, or upset stomach; these are particularly common in women If you are at risk for heart disease and have any of these symptoms, seek medical attention, up to and including calling 911, immediately. Time is a crucial factor in a heart attack because the longer the blockage remains untreated; the more heart muscle will die. Also, drugs that break down blockage in the arteries (thrombolytic therapy) must be given within the first few hours.
This often means medication, but with mildly elevated numbers, lifestyle changes such as regular exercise and losing weight may help. The aim is to get your LDL ("bad") cholesterol below 130 mg/dL, your HDL ("good") cholesterol above 40 mg/dL (but above 60 mg/dL is preferable), your triglycerides below 150 mg/dL, and your waist size under 35 inches. For women with high cholesterol, high blood pressure, or diabetes, however, medication is a must to help prevent heart disease. Exercise and diet are still important, but are secondary. Preventing or controlling heart disease may mean making changes in the way you live. A healthy heart requires a personal action plan. But where do you begin? A complete medical checkup is a sensible first step, especially if you have multiple risk factors. Your health care provider can tell if you have cardiovascular disease or its risk factors, and if so, help you with a practical treatment plan. Even if you don't have any risk factors now, you can discuss ways to lessen your chances of developing them.
CHECK YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE Before menopause, for instance, a systolic reading (the upper number) of more than 120 on your blood pressure reading seems to show you face an added risk, studies have found. Experts recommend that women have their blood pressure checked any time they go to a health care provider, including visits to an OB/GYN provider. High blood pressure is one of a cluster of symptoms called metabolic syndrome that also includes high cholesterol; high triglycerides, which are another type of blood fat; insulin resistance; and obesity. Any woman found to have microvascular disease, metabolic syndrome, and other heart disease risk factors needs treatment.

Breast cancer screening can save lives
October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month—the perfect time to discuss the importance of mammography. Because breast cancer is often detectable in its early stages when there’s a good chance for a cure, breast cancer screening is essential to early detection. Most significantly, mammography is an important line of defense against breast cancer because it can identify tumors even before they can be felt. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, aside from non-melanoma skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United Donald Howser, States. It is also one of the leading M.D., F.A.C.O.G, causes of cancer death among women OB/GYN of all races. In 2008 (the most recent year numbers are available), 210,203 women in the United States were diagnosed with breast cancer, and 40,589 women died from the disease. The National Cancer Institute recommends that women age 40 or older have screening mammograms every 1 to 2 years. If a woman is at high risk for developing breast cancer, her doctor may recommend screening at a younger age, along with additional imaging studies.
Women’s Imaging at Lake Granbury Medical Center is a proud to offer a variety of breast cancer screening techniques.
SCREENING AND DIAGNOSTIC MAMMOGRAPHY
A conventional screening mammogram is a low-dose X-ray test that creates images of breast tissue so doctors can check for lesions or other abnormalities. The x-ray images make it possible to detect tumors that cannot be felt, and can find microcalcifications (tiny deposits of calcium) that sometimes indicate the presence of breast cancer.
A mammogram used to check for breast cancer after a lump or other sign or symptom of the disease is called a diagnostic mammogram. Besides a lump, signs of breast cancer can include breast pain, thickening of the skin of the breast, nipple discharge, or a change in breast size or shape; however, these signs may also be signs of benign or non-cancerous breast conditions.
DIGITAL MAMMOGRAPHY At Women’s Imaging at Lake Granbury Medical Center, women who undergo routine mammograms also have up-to-date diagnostic technology available with digital mammography. While digital imaging feels almost identical to conventional mammography, its benefits are a shorter exam time than traditional mammograms, and less chance that patients will be called back for repeat exams. Digital images tend to provide doctors with better visibility of the breast, chest wall and dense breast tissue. Through computer-aided technology, radiologists are able to enhance certain areas of the digital images to get a more precise picture of a patient’s condition. The digital images can also be stored electronically, and later retrieved to share with other doctors if needed in the future. To minimize any discomfort of the mammogram, Lake Granbury Medical Center offers soft foam pads which serve as a cushion between a woman’s breast and the mammography machine, resulting in a warmer and more comfortable mammogram. Although compression is still required, the pads provide an extra level of cushion for the patient. The professionals at Lake Granbury Medical Center are ready to provide the breast screening technique that is appropriate for the individual woman. For more information on various breast diseases and conditions, the anatomy of the breasts, other screening tools and more, visit www.lakegranburymedicalcenter.com,
