The eastern copperhead is the most common venomous snake in Harris County. We’ll take a look at live snakes and digital images to examine the natural history, ecological significance, and potential threat to humans of this common resident of Jones Park.

In partnership with Texas Parks & Wildlife Department and Fishing’s Future, staff and volunteers will teach families how to use angler equipment, regulations and safety, and basic ecology. Practice casting before taking your family to the creek to try your new skills. All equipment is provided. Bring a sack lunch and dress to be outdoors.

PIONEER DAY: 35TH ANNIVERSARY

Saturday, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Learn about Texas settlers and Native American lifestyles in the 1830s. View living history demonstrations, including blacksmithing, open-fire cooking, spinning, woodworking, and more. Enjoy folk music and hayrides during this free, fun-filled family event.

Join park staff and volunteers to help restore the natural areas of Jones Park by planting a variety of native plants, trees, and seeds in restoration sites throughout the park. Long pants and closed-toe shoes are required. Please bring a shovel.

SNAKE, RATTLE, AND ROLL

Saturday, 1 p.m. Ages 10+.

Though an icon of the Old West, the rattlesnake can be found in a variety of habitats. Here in Harris County, there are several species occasionally encountered: the timber rattlesnake, the pygmy rattlesnake, and the western diamondback rattlesnake. Join a naturalist to learn more about these fascinating reptiles. Visitors will have the opportunity to have a closeup view of live specimens.

Learn from bicycle enthusiasts about safety, rules of the road, and how to ensure your bicycle and safety equipment are in top shape. Enjoy a leisurely ride on the asphalt trails. Bring your own equipment. Great for families, first timers, or seasoned riders.

COPPERHEAD VS COTTONMOUTH: A COMPARATIVE LESSON

Saturday, 10 a.m.

Ages 10+.

Learn about the Eastern copperhead and the Northern cottonmouth. The magnificent reptiles have different venoms and bites that vary based on their prey. We’ll take a look at images and live specimens to examine similarities and differences of these two predators and why they are vital to the ecology of Jones Park.

Learn to appreciate the only winged member of the mammal family during this talk and walk. Find out which species make their home at Kickerillo-Mischer Preserve and in your own back yard. Weather permitting, we will take a short walk to see where these creatures frequent the preserve. Wear comfortable shoes and weather-appropriate clothing. Children must be accompanied by parents.

Watch bats emerge from the bridge on Cypresswood over Cypress Creek. Learn why bats are important and how to ensure their protection. Bring a lawn chair or blanket. Please be prompt, as we cannot guarantee what time bats will emerge.

Celebrate Texas Arbor Day by taking home a free seedling to plant at home. Tree species will vary and be primarily native Texas species. Trees distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.

Join us for an evening of moon gazing as we celebrate the final lunar eclipse of 2021. We’ll view the full moon and learn how and why lunar eclipses occur.

15 AMERICA RECYCLES DAY

Ages 10+ recommended.

Celebrate America Recycles Day at the preserve. We will discuss the ethics of hiking, leave no trace principles, and take a cleanup hike in the preserve. Wear closed-toe shoes, and bring gloves and water.

Create holiday décor using locally sourced twigs, leaves, pinecones, and more. We will discuss the native plants used and the ethics of foraging.

Soil erosion is a continued threat to ecosystems and agriculture across the globe. Join us for World Soils Day as we discuss how to build and maintain healthy soils in your own back yard.

Adults are invited to learn the skill of shooting a bow and arrow. This class offers a full-service, outdoor range where archery basics and safety are taught. Bows, arrows, targets, and arm guards are provided.

A volunteer instructor teaches how to prepare, paint, glaze, and fire greenware pieces. Students must provide all supplies, and only pieces painted by students during class can be fired. Project must be completed by the last class.
