Birders of all skill levels are invited to join a naturalist or volunteer guide to observe and document the park’s variety of spring migrants and early summer resident birds of Jones Park. Bring binoculars.

Ages 16+ or accompanied by adult. Join Jones Park staff and volunteers to remove invasive plant species and restore native habitats in the park. Wear long pants and closed-toe shoes.

PIONEER LIFESTYLE Saturdays, April 24, May 22, and June 26, 1 p.m. – 5 p.m.

Join staff and volunteers for this handson look at early Texan skills. Learn the art of fire making, leather works, small plot gardening, and more in this “slow living” workshop located in Redbud Hill Homestead.

All equipment is provided, including canoes, paddles, and personal flotation devices. Participants are encouraged to bring their own Coast Guard-approved personal flotation device. Each child 10 and under in a canoe must be accompanied by a paddling adult. Canoes have a fourperson maximum capacity.

Wednesday, 4 p.m. – 6 p.m., Multiple start times are available. Recommended for ages 5 - 12. Explore the mysterious, tiny plant world at Mercer Botanic Gardens. Use hand lenses and microscopes to view the tiniest of plants found in the gardens. Observe plant cells, thin roots, seeds, and more! Then, transfer your observations as scientific drawings into a keepsake journal. Small, understory tree saplings will be available to take home for planting.

A TASTE OF TEXAS: THE ETHNOBOTANY OF TEXAS PLANTS*

Friday, 10 a.m. – 11 a.m. Ages 12+. For thousands of years, people have used plants as a food source, medicine, construction materials, textiles, dyes, and more. Take a walking tour with Mercer staff to discover the important relationship between plants and people, and learn about the historical uses of Texas native plants, such as Texas mountain laurel, inland sea oats, and milkweed.

This family-friendly event is for youth with balance, tricycle, or training wheel bikes with up to 16-inch wheelsets.
