En este mercadillo podrás encontrar un sinfín de puestos con artículos de artesanía, joyas, ropa india, cosméticos, ropa para niños y para el hogar, complementos típicos de la India, sedas japonesas, bisutería, prendas exclusivas, etc. Además, se puede disfrutar de unas impresionantes vistas en un sitio tan característico como es Trocadero Sotogrande. Asimismo, hay una rifa solidaria en la que se sortean 80 regalos donados por prestigiosas marcas y colaboradores.

The Bazaar of India dazzles in Sotogrande for another August

A charitable event with the aim of raising funds and allocating them to supporting the different projects that the Hope and Joy Foundation currently has, such as orphanages, health projects, water and sanitation as well as the seven social-sporting schools that it has in India in collaboration with the Real Madrid Foundation and Ferrovial; as well as the programmes they carry out in Spain for people at risk of social exclusion.

This event, which the Foundation organises annually, has contributed to making the 70 projects a reality that, over its 21 years of history, it has carried out in 22 countries spread around Asia, Africa, Latin America, and Spain. At the market you can find endless stands with craft items, jewellery, Indian clothing, cosmetics, clothing for children and bed linen, typical Indian accessories, Japanese silks, costume jewellery, exclusive garments, etc. Also, you can enjoy stunning views in a very characteristic place like Trocadero Sotogrande. Likewise, there is a charity raffle with 80 prizes in the draw donated by prestigious brands and collaborators.

Querido Carlos, un placer tenerte un año más por Sotogrande, y más aún verte disfrutando de los parabienes de nuestra urbanización. Hablando de retórica, ¿va a ser cierto al final eso de que España es un país ingobernable?

No creo que sea ingobernable, aunque, evidentemente, las últimas elecciones generales nos han situado en un horizonte político donde la formación del Gobierno será difícil. Pero incluso en el caso de que ni PP ni PSOE logren los apoyos suficientes, no sería el fin del mundo, sino el comienzo de un nuevo ciclo electoral.

¿Algo parecido a la viñeta famosa de “el caos o yo”?

Pues, no, porque la falta de Gobierno no es sinónimo de caos, mientras las instituciones más o menos puedan seguir funcionando. Los políticos suelen esgrimir esa amenaza para atraer votantes, pero la verdad es que los partidos con opciones de gobierno no son tan diferentes como ellos mismos pretenden que creamos. Y el caos genuino, que sería la España republicana, comunista y desmembrada, que pretenden los nacionalistas y la extrema izquierda, parece imposible, por pésima que sea nuestra opinión de la persona que podría desencadenarla: Pedro Sánchez.

En esta pregunta quiero ir algo más a lo técnico y menos a predicciones políticas: ¿Cómo respira la economía para el segundo semestre?

Hay una cierta desaceleración de la actividad económica en muchos países, incluida España, eso está claro, y seguimos con los problemas de inflación y de finanzas públicas.

¿Y los tipos de interés, hipotecas, etc.? Sospecho que se mantendrán elevados durante un tiempo, hasta que se vaya moderando la inflación.

¿Qué beneficios supondrá para España esa presidencia itinerante de la Unión Europea? ¿Cómo aprovechar el ser el centro de todos los focos?

La presidencia es más simbólica que otra cosa, aunque los políticos que la ocupan no pierden la ocasión para señalar lo importantes que son. En realidad, la verdadera relevancia de Europa es que impide, de momento, que las autoridades hagan tonterías gravísimas.

Antes de acabar, no me canso de preguntártelo. ¿Debemos ser optimistas con esta España tan particular “a pesar del Gobierno”?

A los españoles nos gusta despotricar contra el Gobierno, lo que sin duda es sano y liberal.

Ahora bien, si España fuera como sus gobiernos, entonces difícilmente habríamos logrado ser uno de los países más relevantes del mundo. Debemos dar gracias a Dios porque lo fundamental no está en la política sino en la gente, y porque los países suelen ser mejores que sus autoridades. ¡Imagínate qué espanto si fuera al revés!

Y una en tintero. ¿Cómo has encontrado Sotogrande este verano? Está de 60 aniversario y éste, su periódico, también celebra el 25 aniversario. He encontrado a Sotogrande estupendo este verano. Nos quejamos, como siempre, de que hay mucha gente, y eso genera inconvenientes. Pues, claro que hay gente. Si no la hay en verano,

¿cuándo la va a haber? Pero la clave es que nuestra urbanización sigue progresando y, sobre todo, sigue siendo la más bonita y elegante de España, como reconocen propios y extraños. Además, Sotogrande está de cumpleaños, y, para colmo de bienes, nuestro Periódico celebra su primer cuarto de siglo. ¿Qué más se puede pedir?

Beloved Carlos, it is a pleasure to have you in Sotogrande once again this year, and even more so to see you enjoying the attractions of our resort. Speaking of rhetoric, is it true that ultimately Spain is an ungovernable country?

I don’t think it is ungovernable, although, clearly, the last general elections put us in a political scenario where it will be difficult to form a Government. However, even in the event that neither the PP nor PSOE achieve sufficient support, it wouldn’t be the end of the world, but rather the start of a new election cycle.

Something similar to the famous cartoon strip “chaos or me”? Well, no, because the lack of Government isn’t synonymous with chaos, while institutions can more or less continue to function. Politicians normally wield that threat to attract voters, but the truth is that parties with the options of governing are not as different as they themselves want us to believe. And genuine chaos, which would be the Republican, communist and dismembered Spain that the nationalists and far left want, seems impossible, no matter how awful our opinion is of the person who could trigger it: Pedro Sánchez.

In this question, I want to delve into the technical aspect a little more and less into political predictions: How is the economy looking for the second half of the year? There is a certain slowdown in economic activity in many countries, including Spain, which is clear, and we still have the problems of inflation and public finances.

And interest rates, mortgages, etc.?

I suspect that they will remain high for a while, until inflation gradually levels out.

What benefits will that rotating presidency of the European Union bring to Spain? How can we make the most of being the centre of attention?

The presidency is more symbolic than anything, although the politicians that hold it don’t miss the chance to show how important they are. In reality, the true importance of Europe is that it prevents, at the moment, authorities from doing very serious stupid things.

Before ending, I never get tired of asking you this. Should we be optimistic with this very particular Spain “despite the Government”? Spanish people like to rant against the Government, which is undoubtedly healthy and liberal. However, if Spain was like its governments, then we would have found it difficult to become of the world’s most important countries. We should thank God because the essentials aren’t in politics, but rather in the people, and because countries are normally better than their authorities. Imagine how scary it would be if it were the other way round!.

And one I forgot about. How have you found Sotogrande this summer? It is its 60th anniversary, and this, its newspaper, is also celebrating its 25th anniversary. I havefound Sotogrande to be amazing this summer. As always, we complain that there are lots of people, and that creates setbacks. Well, of course there are people. If there aren’t in summer, when will there be? However, the key is that our resort continues to progress and, above all, it remains the most beautiful and elegant in Spain, as locals and foreigners acknowledge. Also, Sotogrande is celebrating its birthday and, to top off the good things, our Periódico de Sotogrande is celebrating its first quarter of a century. What more can you ask for?
