Sotogrande and polo: an historic pairing

It isn´t possible to imagine a summer evening in Sotogrande without ending up by enjoying a polo match. Polo has always been a part of the Sotogrande lifestyle and it has been present since the outset of the resort in its founding concept. A perfect symbiosis where entire families have enjoyed this great passion for sport and the equestrian world since the 60´s.

Evenings on the beach pitch, the one at Paniagua, those of Río, Puente de Hierro and the greatest expression of the most international, commercial and social polo with its expansion at Los Pinos. All alongside very illustrious surnames such as Zobel, Mora-Figueroa, Domecq and Parladé, among many others. A great history and passion that in Sotogrande currently revolves around three major clubs: Santa María Polo Club, Ayala Polo Club and Dos Lunas Dressage & Polo.

For years, this select equestrian sport has positioned the resort on the highest altars of polo, Sotogrande has been one of the obligatory stops for the main patrons and players for decades, a few years ago it even became one of the Grand Slams on the international polo circuit.

As this is a short look at the history of polo in Sotogrande we are remembering and looking back at some of the major milestones and key dates of its influence in the resort. To this early Sotogrande, polo would arrive brought from the Philippines by Enrique Zóbel, creating the legendary beach pitch that provided so many good memories for the first residents of Sotogrande. Each evening, everyone gathered there to watch the matches and have a fun time among friends. This was the seed of what the polo of Sotogrande now means around the entire world, it is one of the few places where, internationally speaking, it is possible to play polo throughout the year. At present, Sotogrande has major trophies, notably including the “Sotogrande Gold Cup”, which has been played since 1971 and it turns the resort into the global capital of this sport for weeks. In 1973, the first edition of the Silver Cup took place, the winner was the Sotogrande team and the following year the Paniagua polo pitch opened. The start of the 90´s would encourage greater professionalization of the Summer Tournament, as well as of the different cups, with the arrival of major organisations and highly prestigious international patrons, as well as the support and sponsorship of important commercial brands.

The pitches of Puente de Hierro were founded in 1992, and in 1995 the pitches of Haciendas de San Enrique I and II were polo, another major ad- vance in the area´s polo facilities In 2008, the definitive leap on a quantitative and qualitative level came with the opening of the area of Los Pinos at Santa María Polo Club. Recently, it is worth mentioning the recovery of polo management by Ayala Polo, with Paola Zobel (granddaughter of Enrique Zobel) who has been managing the tournament and its organisation for some years now, with Ayala Polo Club.
