Indonesia Educational Program Ka r e l L i e m is the Henry Bryant Bigelow Professor of Ichthyology at Harvard, curator of ichthyology at the Museum of Comparative Zoology, and popular lecturer, author, and editor. He will discuss natural history, regional ecosystems, and the underwater world of Indonesia. “It is not often that I have had the opportunity to lead such an extraordinary study trip to the most diverse country in the world: Indonesia, my birthplace. I am excited to share with you the awe-inspiring natural beauty, bird life, and fish species not only of Bali and Java east of Wallace’s Line, but also of the island west of the line, Komodo, known for its prehistoric giant monitor lizards and dramatic snorkeling sites. This journey gives you the optimal combination of cultural history, breathtaking natural beauty, and the genuine friendship of different peoples, as well as the comfortable accommodations of the Orion and the expertise and experience of her crew, which I can recommend highly.” N a n cy Co o p e r is an adjunct associate professor and lecturer at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. A cultural anthropologist, she has conducted field research in Indonesia since the 1970s, is fluent in both Bahasa Indonesian and Javanese, and plays the gamelan, a traditional Javanese instrument. “Indonesia is truly an anthropologist’s dream, as each island in the archipelago has its own fascinating history and its people their own local stories. We’ll also look at the artistic traditions of Bali, where expressive culture permeates life itself. He recently returned from Indonesia, where he worked on an upcoming History Channel documentary on Krakatau. “Indonesia is an island nation built largely upon volcanoes or their eroded remnants. This makes Indonesia one of the best places in the world to study active volcanoes. As a volcanologist who studied the 1883 eruption of Krakatau, I have devoted much of my career toward increasing our knowledge of eruption processes so that we can more effectively mitigate future volcanic crises, both in Indonesia and elsewhere.” On -B oa r d N at u r a l i sts The Orion is staffed with a crew of naturalists and seasoned guides, including Expedition Program Manager Justin Friend, an adventure travel guide; Expedition Leader Michael Fogg, a marine biologist; Expedition Team Naturalist Darrin Bennett, a bird expert; Expedition Team Naturalist Mark Watson, a wilderness expert; Expedition Team Naturalist Mark Christensen, an expert on coral reefs; Expedition Team
