The current course is prescribed by ARB and has been granted five years approval by the RIBA at Part 1 level. The programme offers a distinctive route and benefits from its location within the specialist environs of the Faculty of Arts building. Numbers in each cohort are limited (max 25) which means that every student is allocated a permanent studio space. This encourages staff and students to interact in a way that resembles an atelier, a community of designers who are interested in Architecture and the built environment.

Each of the three years is designed to build individual student’s knowledge, confidence and ability in Architecture. The four main areas of study are Design; Technology; History and Theory of Architecture; and Professional Practice. The nature of the course means that you will be exposed to a wide spectrum of art influence and projects encompassing architecture, landscape, interior and urban design. Students have the opportunity to demonstrate knowledge and understanding through a series of ‘live’ project briefs set within the city of Hull and its immediate environs. You will have an increasing responsibility to negotiate the focus of your studies.

The course offers students the opportunity to study at Part 2 level both at Hull and other institutions. There is normally a requirement for students to follow a structured year out in Practice before entering onto a Part 2 course.

This Postgraduate Course will offer architecture at Part 2 level. The programme offers a number of distinctive benefits which includes vertical studio teaching within three specialist research groups all set within the specialist environs of the Faculty of Arts building. You will be encouraged to develop your own learning focus within a school environment that has developed a number of research interests relating to the subject of Architecture. Whilst the first degree equips students with knowledge and skills, the post-graduate course at Hull requires you to develop your capabilities within specialist areas.

The three research studios are titled ‘Land’,‘Time’, and ‘Poetry’, and allow students to develop a portfolio of work which offers the best opportunity to focus on areas of specific interest through projects encompassing architecture, landscape, interior and urban design and are informed by both individual and group research. Assignments are varied, enabling opportunities to demonstrate knowledge and understanding through a series of projects that include ‘live’ project briefs set within the city of Hull and its immediate environs. You will have an increasing responsibility to negotiate the focus of your studies through discussion with the course team.

The course (subject to RIBA/ ARB Validation) offers students the opportunity to enter the profession at Part 2 level and follow the prescribed route through to the final examination (Part 3). There is a requirement for students to follow a structured period of supported practice before taking the Part 3 Examination. Students awarded the M.Arch in Architecture will be recognised within the profession as a Part 2 Assistant with the skills to allow integration into the professional workplace.

The BA (Hons) Graphic Design programme has been established for over 40 years and the enduring aim is to produce highly creative graduates who fully understand the purposes, processes and products of contemporary graphic design practice. Communication is at the heart of the course and a wide range of communication media available to the modern practitioner is explored. Typography, printmaking, photography, 3D fabrication, video, sound, computing/ software, web and social media become part of the students’ communication toolkit. The programme is a member of the Design and Art Direction (D&AD). Students may attend D&AD events including the New Blood Graduate Exhibition, London.

Graphic Design students have the opportunity to work towards their specific and/or personal interests within the course and then the majority progress to employment at a high level of responsibility and creative decision making in the field of professional design. Others may progress to related areas of study and employment where the qualification and skills gained during the course are valued. Some students continue to subject related post graduate study. Contacts with industry are strong and work experience encouraged, preparing students for employment in their chosen area.

The quality of work produced on the course has achieved national recognition in professional journals and through competition successes including Clear Channel Student Advertising Awards, Design and Art Direction (D&AD) Student Awards, Royal Society of Arts (RSA) Design Directions Award Scheme, Starpack Packaging Design Student Awards and Young Creative Network (YCN) Student Awards. As a result employment prospects in the creative industries are good and many have secured positions with award winning design companies.

I find studying illustration very interesting, and I think it’s also a commercially viable discipline for the future. My career ambition is to move into the art industry. Key word is “professional” - I have worked with many groups of students over the years and this group must be the most professional of all. They have taken the brief very seriously indeed and because of their awareness of the newest technology I am confident that I will receive a well designed, upto-date, conforming to brief, solid and future proof submission from the groups. Since my first week on the degree course I have found the support given by Hull College and the lecturers not only on my course but through-out the Hull College to be extremely helpful and supportive. The smaller classes and one on one support have allowed me to understand things I never thought possible and allowed me to broaden my knowledge in areas from politics, to sociological research, to social policy and highlighting the importance of communities, whilst preparing myself for a career in a job of my choice. I firmly believe choosing the Applied Social Science degree course at Hull College, over the other options I was offered, to be one of the best decisions I have made. Top Up Degrees

Master’s Degrees

These are one-year pre-degree courses designed to help those who have either been out of education for some time or who do not have traditional qualifications to progress onto a degree or higher level study programme.

If you have successfully completed a HND or Foundation Degree you can choose to ‘top up’ to a Bachelors level qualification - this normally takes one year full time.

A Master’s Degree is available to graduates who wish to develop specialist knowledge in a particular field of study and normally requires one year of full time study.

Higher National Certificate (HNC)

The HND is again a vocationally led higher level programme oriented around a specific industry. It is roughly equivalent to the first two years of a degree.

Normally these are awarded by the industry body to which a programme of study relates, such as the Chartered Management Institute (CMI), the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) and the Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development (CIPD). Students undertake these programmes to assist with the professional work place development and are normally studied part time.

Foundation Degrees

Bachelor’s Degrees

This is a vocational higher education qualification which combines academic study with work place learning. A foundation degree equips you with relevant skills for a particular area of employment and is usually studied over two years full time, and can lead to an honours degree with a further year of study.

These honours degrees are normally referred to as a BA (Bachelor of Arts), BSc (Bachelor of Sciences) or BEng (Bachelor of Engineering) and the award will depend on your subject of study. A degree normally takes three years to complete full time and up to six years part time.

Higher National Diploma (HND)

Jargon Buster

The HNC is a vocational qualification which is roughly equivalent to one year of a degree - progression is normally onto the equivalent HND.
