Allie: Our wedding day was one of pure joy and excitement. The ceremony took place at 5 p.m. on the outdoor courtyard overlooking Johns River Gorge. Afterward, our guests were invited to the manor house for cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and a bar that was set up on the West Portico for all to enjoy the stunning view of Grandfather Mountain. The reception featured an amazing spread catered by Westglow’s excellent staff. Once the music began, the dance floor wasn’t vacant for the rest of the evening. We could not have asked for a more beautiful wedding day. We felt blessed by everyone and everything that made our wedding weekend truly feel like a fairy tale…
VENUE: Allie and Jason were married on the courtyard at Westglow with 175 of their closest friends and family. RECEPTION: After hors d’oeuvres inside the mansion and on the West Portico, guest returned to the lawn where the ceremony site had been transformed into a beautiful reception area. Allie chose yellow and light blue--a fresh color pallet for her flowers. CAKE: Two layers were tiramisu, another was chocolate cake with cheescake filling, and the fourth was vanilla with chocolate ganache on the bottom.

Libby: The verse, “there is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens,” comes to mind when I think of our first meeting. Neal and I both transferred to Appalachian State University and, unbeknownst to us, even had mutual acquaintances, but we never crossed paths. After college, we both worked at the same small high school; Neal as a basketball coach and I as a teacher. Still, Neal and I never met. With several mutual friends in the small community we lived in, Neal and I could have met numerous times. But the universe had a plan. It wasn’t until four years later that one of these mutual friends had the idea of setting us up on a blind date, and Neal and I haven’t been apart since...
VENUE: Libby and Neal wed at St. Bernadette’s Catholic Church in Linville. RECEPTION: Guests traveled on the Blue Ridge Parkway to the Meadowbrook Inn in Blowing Rock. FLORAL DESIGN: Designed by Sandy Henderson to accompany the plum and green apple color scheme. GUEST BOOK: Guests were asked to write a message to the bride and groom on white-labeled wine bottles.

Sara and Andrew | September 23, 2011 Sara: I grew up in Banner Elk, NC and Andrew was raised down under in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. Our love for adventure and travel brought us together. We met in a small rustic bar in Keystone, CO on New Year’s Eve. I was working as a traveling nurse in Denver and Andrew was working as a lift operator at Arapahoe Basin. We have followed each other around the world from Australia, to the U.S. to Europe and back. After five years together, we began planning a wedding in my hometown while living in Australia with the help of Events by Elizabeth Ashley...

Sisters Christine and Erica Furman wed just one month apart at the same location. How were they able to pull it off without sibling rivalry? High Country Wedding Guide caught up with the Furman family to hear about the recent destination weddings of two sisters, Erica and Christine, who wed one month apart in the High Country. They used many of the same vendors, including their grandparents’ barn as the venue in Boone. What were the advantages and disadvantages? Was there friendly competition? Did Mr. and Mrs. Furman ever imagine two of their daughters would walk down the aisle the same year, let alone a month apart? We interviewed sisters Christine Furman Harmon and Erica Furman Walecka, along with mother-of-the-brides, Allison Furman, and wedding coordinator, Melissa Riley of Day of your Dreams, to get the scoop.

HCWG: Erica, what was your vision for your wedding day? Erica: We took our inspiration from the classy, modern swank of a pin-stripe suit. I wanted chic and classic clean lines. From the beginning I didn’t want frilly, girly stuff - that isn’t me, and certainly isn’t “us.” By no means did I want “simple.” However, I really wanted a gown that was dramatic. It was clean, super

chic and unexpected. The violet flowers and my purple shoes were frilly hints that kept the vision fun. Melissa: Erica and Andrew’s wedding was classic and sophisticated. It was an enchanted evening under a canopy of stars. The newlyweds made a point to enjoy their own day and visit with guests. In fact, they had such a great time they ended up extending their reception.

HCWG: Christine, what was your vision for your wedding day? Christine: From the start, Stephen and I had a vision of a classy but casual wedding. We had imagined a beautiful outdoor wedding, full of our family and friends wishing us into the next chapter of our lives. It was described as a rustic garden party. Our guests were greeted by a horse-drawn carriage to take them to the ceremony site – a lovely barn in the mountains of North Carolina. Upon
arrival, guests were directed by handpainted, wooden signs pointing to the various attractions of the evening. These rustic details were only the beginning of a variety of many that made our wedding so special and uniquely us. Melissa: Christine and Stephen’s wedding style was elegant, yet fun and playful. It was a perfectly romantic English garden party followed by a candlelight dinner. The couple beamed with love and happiness. 23 • highcountryweddingguide.com
The Furman family from left: Nicole, Allison, Erica, Jim, and Christine.
HCWG: Was there any concern about each wedding day being unique? Christine: Of course - especially since we were both using the same venue for the ceremonies and receptions. I was nervous that they were going to be too similar and not showcase our unique styles. I really tried to just remember that at the end of the summer, we’d both be happily married - the weddings were exciting and fun, but the marriages are really what this is all about. Erica: From the very beginning, Christine and I had very different visions for our weddings. Christine and Stephen were much more organic in their vision and Andrew and I were envisioning something high-fashion and opulent. We would regularly check in with each other to make sure our elements would be distinct and special. Melissa: Both girls had a very clear and different vision for their own wedding. 24 • highcountryweddingguide.com
Each reflected their styles and personalities. The ceremonies and festivities were held on different parts of the property which helped define the mood and feel for each. Allison: It was not like when I got married and you had a church wedding with a reception in the fellowship hall. Both of the fiancés were verbal about their ideas for the weddings, so the ceremonies were each a reflection of two individuals becoming a family. We all wanted to honor the couples and have fun with it! HCWG: Were there any moments of competition planning the weddings? Erica: As we were working out the details there were definitely moments of competition. Having our weddings so close, we didn’t want to both have the same details - like sparklers instead of bird seed as the send-off - because we didn’t want them to be too similar, or heaven-forbid, forgetful!
Melissa: Well, I’d say that with any other sisters there would have been potential for competition. However, these two were more concerned with their marriages than the actual wedding days. They knew their hearts for their own weddings, and allowed one another complete freedom to plan their dream weddings. Allison: They made me so proud! I was really moved by how the girls were there for each other. They were each very, very good to accommodate the other if she wanted to do something unique. There was a lot of good communication, and the sisters (older sister, Nicole, was in both weddings) just circled around the one who was getting married that day. HCWG: Did you find it advantageous to use some of the same vendors? Christine: I think the biggest advantage was they were familiar with both weddings! This was a great thing in terms of getting to know the vendors on a personal level - they really got to know our family. It was clear that they knew and understood the blessings and challenges of two sisters getting married in one summer - they were able to help create two different weddings that really showcased our own styles.
that having Buddy take care of decor, catering and floral would be a blessing. For me, this meant that I didn’t have to continually call the caterers to make sure they were on board with what the florist and the decorator were doing - it made everything work together conveniently. HCWG: What were some of your most memorable wedding details? Christine: Special details during the ceremony, such as the large wooden cross Stephen built with my uncle, kept the focus on the simplistic beauty of our ceremony. We decided early in the wedding planning process to not include a dance floor at the reception. Instead of a father-daughter dance, we reintroduced the horses that brought the guests to the ceremony with a father-daughter ride. After the ceremony my dad and I snuck away to the horses and jumped on. We rode through the meadow behind the barn and over to the horse ring, where my dad let Stephen take his horse and join me for a ride. It was a beautiful and poetic way to celebrate my transition into married life with Stephen.
Erica: We decided it would be great to have Buddy Fore, with Events by Grouse Moor, do both weddings because he would know the details of both and be able to easily make sure they were distinctly different. This ended up working out great because Buddy would come over, talk about my wedding, and then we would Skype Christine and Stephen and they would talk about theirs. Having Christine so far away in Colorado meant 25 • highcountryweddingguide.com
Erica: Our wedding party was introduced and Andrew and I shared a special moment dancing to “Close Enough” by Sean McConnell. With our longdistance relationship, this song held immense meaning for both of us. Another highlight of the evening was our photo booth. We used the strip photos from ShutterBooth as our guestbook and guest favors: each strip was printed twice, once for the guest and once for our guestbook. Next to each photo strip are notes of love and marital advice for Andrew and me to flip through and cherish. Melissa: No detail was too small to go untouched in either wedding. However, the most important details were in the marriage ceremonies themselves. I remember Mrs. Furman saying early on, “A wedding is a day; a marriage a lifetime.” Both ceremonies were focused on the couples and their promises to God. They both had full worship services with communion for all guests. They made a point to keep their focus, which I believe was the key to pulling off two amazing and memorable weddings in five weeks. HCWG: Mrs. Furman, would you be willing to share any particularly poignant moments for you, as a parent? Allison: I truly enjoyed watching all three of my daughters be there for one another. It is special for a mom to see her daughters as adults, helping each other. I was blessed to help serve communion at both ceremonies and I had a very special moment while serving communion at Erica and Andrew’s wedding. I was able to serve someone very special to me their first communion. Christine 26 • highcountryweddingguide.com
and Stephen decided to dispense with the tradition of not seeing each other before the ceremony. Before the wedding, I witnessed them seeing each other for the first time that day, what we called the “first embrace.” At that moment she was more his bride than our daughter. I realized then that this was the beginning of a new, beautiful part of our journey as a family. HCWG: So how is married life? Christine: Stephen and I love married life! It’s such a fun adventure, and I love knowing I’ll be with my best friend for the rest of my life. It is a challenge living so far away from the rest of my family, especially since our sister, Nicole, has two beautiful baby girls and another boy on the way. I do miss them a lot but I’m thankful for great technology that keeps us in touch. Erica: Life as newlyweds is wonderful. It is nice to have someone to talk to, other than my dog, when I get home. Andrew and I have recently begun playing Scrabble regularly. We are enjoying time together and trying to work out who does what chores, but we are enjoying every moment of our new life. Our families have been using video chatting and technology a lot recently to stay connected. HCWG: Thank you so much for sharing your stories with us. We wish you and your family the greatest happiness to come!

Kathryn: I have always had a love for the mountains, but had no idea that falling in love with Blake would also mean falling in love with the North Carolina High Country. After growing up in Alabama, the moderate weather with mild humidity is one aspect that is extremely attractive to me. When Blake proposed at Thanksgiving, Boone was our first choice of locations for a summer wedding. We selected the Blue Ridge Mountain Club as our venue. There are not words to describe the majestic beauty and calming peace of the site. It was truly God’s chapel and there was nowhere else we would want to unite than in this picture-perfect spot. Even the open-air pavilion boasted spectacular mountain views all around. Ruth: We knew we wanted to find the perfect rustic mountain venue in the High Country. We fell in love in Boone and, over the years, it became our home. We searched far and wide and finally found Camp Sky Ranch in Blowing Rock. After finding “the place” everything else came together very easily with the help of Events by Elizabeth Ashley. It was exactly what we had envisioned we were inspired by everything around us. Winkler’s Creek, apple trees and rhododendron set the mood for the first day of our life together... 50 • highcountryweddingguide.com
INSPIRATION: The wedding theme was inspired by the great outdoors. VENUE: The rustic chapel served as the ceremony backdrop, as guests watched from antique pews. A beautiful tent lined with white paper lanterns, housed the reception. FLOWERS: Yellow ranunculus and white sweetpeas hung in mason jars along the aisle. CATERING: The Gamekeeper provided NC barbecue and all the traditional fixins’. PLACE SETTINGS: Miss Match Rentals provided an eclectic array of dishes, flatware, and linens to fit in with the rustic theme.

Wendy: We awoke the morning of our wedding to the sound of rain falling on our cabin near the Blue Ridge Parkway. We were told that it was to be ‘the storm of the century,’ and were worried that the gloomy April morning would ruin our outdoor wedding plans. However, we knew we were getting married and nothing was going to stop us, not even the rain. The 10,000 things we had to do were circling our minds, and we were worried about the obvious, “Will we have to move our wedding indoors?” We began getting ready and planning a last minute indoor cabin ceremony when the sun came out, the clouds cleared away and the blue sky started glimmering over the picturesque Blue Ridge Mountains! The ceremony was beautiful. We had an intimate reception afterward with our closest family and friends. The food was incredible, the music was perfect, and so was the day...”

INSPIRATION: The colors and serenity of the Blue Ridge Mountains inspired the wedding theme. VENUE: Wendy and Dave’s ceremony was held at Hidden Falls atop Leatherwood Mountain. FLOWERS: The floral design consisted of succulents, peach parrot tulips and blush poppies. CAKE: Made from fresh ground vanilla bean with mocha buttercream icing. GUEST BOOK: Guests added their fingerprints and signatures to create leaves on a framed painting of a tree.

Love
Literary
Heidi and Peter’s story begins in Washington, DC, where they met as legislative liaisons. One of their first dates was to Capitol Hill Books where they browsed for hours and discovered much more than a mutual interest in reading. Inspired by this date and a shared love of literature and antique books, Heidi and Peter’s wedding combined rustic elegance with sentimental details to create a Pulitzer Prize-worthy destination wedding. High Country vendors helped the couple write the first chapter of their new life together.
The Setting Heidi, originally from Jefferson, NC, and Peter selected The Eseeola Lodge’s Camp Yonahnoka to reflect the bride’s mountain heritage and for its renowned cuisine and facilities, which were sure to please guests from as far away as Australia. The September 3, 2011, wedding was held outside under the Camp’s 100year-old white birch tree. The ceremony was framed by a decorated arbor, lake and sweeping mountain vistas creating the perfect setting for the couple’s 130 family and friends to share in the celebration of their marriage.

Heidi and Peter, both avid travelers, sought to incorporate thoughtful details from their adventures abroad-ribbon from Paris, guest register books from Australia, and vintage books from London. Continuing the literary theme, the ring bearer, the bride’s step-nephew, carried the rings tied with a satin ribbon around the book The Last Days of Pompeii, which was a first Valentine’s Day gift from the groom to the bride. Adding to the sentimentality, the bride’s step-father provided the homily at the ceremony. Floral kissing balls were hung from the tree in memory of the couple’s grandparents.
The bride wore a Priscilla of Boston couture gown with a cathedral length veil. The bridesmaids wore J. Crew silk taffeta dresses in pewter and carried bouquets of David Austen white cottage roses and white and green hydrangeas accented with lavender freesia and fern fronds. The bouquets were tied with lavender ribbon from Paris. The bride arrived at the ceremony with her parents in a white Excalibur, which was also the couple’s get-away car at the end of the night. 60 • highcountryweddingguide.com
Reception tables were named after favorite authors--from William Faulkner to Umberto Eco. The bride used an antique card catalogue from the former Ashe Central High School, where the bride’s mother was employed, to arrange personalized seating cards for each guest. Each card included a mock ISBN number formed by using the couple’s initials and wedding date followed by a quote from the author for the guest’s assigned dinner table.
Above:The card catalogue was decorated with engagement photos of the couple at their favorite bookstoreCapitol Hill Books. Below: A vintage Smith-Corona typewriter, owned by the groom’s grandfather, was used for guests to type a note of advice for the couple.
Above: Silhouette of bride’s grandmother, created in 1965 by a New Orleans artist.
The mantle was decorated with books and photos of the couple in Washington, DC, at the US Capitol and the Lincoln Memorial. Above the mantle were the couple’s first initials done in green moss. The wedding cake was almond with amaretto filling and almond Swiss butter cream frosting. Guests had a choice of cupcake favors--blackberry almond or triple chocolate-individually boxed with a monogrammed seal and a personal message from the bride and groom. Tables were draped with periwinkle Bertani silk linens and featured white hemstitch napkins tied with lavender satin ribbons. Each table was decorated with either a floral topiary or a centerpiece of roses, hydrangeas, lavender freesia, lisianthus, bells of Ireland, and fern fronds. The floral arrangements were accompanied by a slate hand-painted with the author’s name and a selection of hard-cover books featuring the author’s most well-known works. 62 • highcountryweddingguide.com
A Room With a View The Eseeola Lodge’s Camp Yonahnoka was transformed into a stunning open-air ballroom. The lush floral design and the exquisite table decor evoked a feeling of rustic elegance with a literary twist. Guests were treated to appetizers and cocktails prior to a three course buffet dinner follwed by wedding cake for dessert.- It was an unforgettable evening made perfect down to the very last detail by their tremendous team of High Country vendors.

Tripp and I are both from Charlotte, but I felt like many of my friends had beaten me to the quintessential Charlotte wedding. I certainly wanted something unique; we wanted a wedding that portrayed our personalities, included all of our friends and family and would be an absolute blast. Our wedding day arrived and was more beautiful than we imagined. Tripp and I danced to “Miss Grace” for our first dance, and enjoyed the company of all our beloved friends. REGISTER LOCALLY
MULTI-PURPOSE
“Consider registering at a local shop in the town where you are having your destination wedding. This will serve your guests who will be looking for a last minute gift and help you avoid returns of unusable gifts. This will give you a chance to receive local gifts that reflect the location of your special day! Even small locally owned retail shops have websites and shipping.”
“Make your wedding design personal. When purchasing items for the wedding, look for items that you can still use in your home after. This will reflect your personality, add style and create keepsakes to cherish throughout your marriage. For example, if you are having a “love is sweet” table, use glass containers that you can later use to decorate your new love nest!”
Alex Jones, The Mountain Cottage
Melissa Riley , Day of Your Dreams
SPIN PLEASER “When choosing music for your reception, we recommend putting your favorites on the table and then asking your DJ about other suggestions based on your attendees so everyone’s music taste is included. Remember that the music you like may differ from the music that will entertain a multi-generational group of guests. Everyone deserves the chance to dance!” Gordon Hensley, Digital DJs

from local wedding
PROFESSIONALS
PHOTO FABULOUS
“If your flower budget does not allow for orchids and peonies, but they are your absolute favorite, then splurge and carry them in just your bouquet, or use them in single bud vases with lots of candles!”
“Hiring a photographer is one of the most important planning decisions you’ll make. Never pick a photographer based solely on price; wedding photographers are artists, and you are investing in something that will be the only thing you have to remember your special day by. Choosing someone you connect with and whose work you love is so important.”
Fuschia Moss, Fuschia Moss Floral Design
Corina Fletcher, Fletcher & Fletcher Photography
FLOWERS
WEATHER WISE “The weather can be very unpredictable during any season in the mountains. Be aware so you can have appropriate attire and accessories, i.e. wraps, sweaters, umbrellas, etc. On a side note, some of the accommodations do not have air conditioning, so if you’re planning a summer wedding, inquire ahead of time and tell your guests so that they can be prepared. You usually won’t need it!” Meris Gantt, The Whole Shebang
CAKE TALK “No two cakes are ever alike--this is your special day and your wedding cake should reflect that. Before every consultation, I give my couples two assignments: First, spend some time looking through magazines and on the web, searching for photographs of cakes that have a look you love. Together, we’ll examine all the visual elements that you love, and then custom design a cake that will wow you and your guests! Second, talk to each other about what sweet delights the two of you love best. Don’t limit the conversation to cake--do you love butterfingers? Cheesecake? Banana pudding? Crème brulee? Build a wedding cake around your favorite flavors. Beautiful is very important, but so is flavor--after all, it is a cake!” Jo Ann Hallmark, Hallmark Cakes
MUSIC “Many couples are departing from the traditional wedding pieces, and choosing selections that have meaning for them. Whether you opt for old standbys or march to your own drummer, it’s important to know what type of ensemble you are looking for. Some musicians are very versatile, but more often, groups specialize in one genre. If you have a piece that is out of the ordinary, ask in advance if your vendor can adapt it to their style, and if there are any surcharges for new material. When hiring bands, know that each band has a repertoire that they do best. While there are wedding bands that cover a lot of musical ground, if you are looking for a variety, a DJ may be your best option!” Kim France, Tater Hill Music
PREPARED PALETTE “When preparing for an important event, choosing the right professionals to share in your festivities is crucial. The caterer should be flexible, a wonderful listener and calm; these key assets will ensure that you have a day with your ideas and plans in mind. We feel that the more details our clients share, the better prepared we are to accommodate their needs and plans, and to customize our work around their event.” Tina Houston, Reid’s Catering
