Cooler mountain air can be a nice reprieve for out of town guests (and your hair and makeup). Remind guests to check local weather information beforehand and dress appropriately.
Charming small towns to discover. Small towns move at a slower pace and offer culture, cuisine, and crafts local to the area. Your guests can enjoy taking a stroll through downtown Blowing Rock, visiting Mast General Store in historic Valle Crucis, or discovering local art and handmade crafts in downtown Boone.
3 4
Summer weather that beats the heat.
Southern hospitality that will bless your heart. People in the streets greet you with smiles. A warm embrace welcomes you to a local inn. Children’s laughter and joy flood local parks. Hikers say hello and are happy to offer advice on trails. And the food can comfort any soul. Most importantly, the vendors here will take you in and treat you like family, pouring love into every detail of your wedding.
An abundance of talented local vendors. No need to venture down the mountain to find vendors--some of the most talented vendors in the industry are found right here. Vendor camaraderie can bring ease and joy to the planning process. High Country vendors know each other, like each other, and work well together.
5
A place to unplug and unwind. Planning a wedding can be stressful. Make time to enjoy a scenic drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway, hang a hammock between two trees in a park and dive into a good read, or venture out onto a scenic hiking trail and take in the expansive views.
6
A destination for you and guests. Whether on a hiking trail along the Blue Ridge Parkway or enjoying a local festival, the myriad of entertainment options will leave guests excited you chose the High Country as they enjoy a getaway to the mountains.
7 8
Local and fresh fare to taste. The High Country boasts many award-winning restaurants featuring everything from local favorites using farm fresh products to European cuisine. Whether relaxing at one of the area’s many wineries or enjoying freshly caught local trout, you will discover a true culinary destination.
Stunning scenery for perfect pictures. Some of the most stunning wedding pictures featured in our guide include the beautiful and plentiful scenery here in the High Country. From expansive mountain views to intimate natural settings, incorporate the beautiful backdrop into your portraits. The Blue Ridge Parkway offers many locations to choose from, any season of the year.
9

Appalachian Mountains boast vibrant Fall colors. The higher the elevation, the sooner the leaves will turn. Starting in the Banner Elk area, leaves begin to change in early October and peak around the second or third week of the month. The colorful leaves can serve as a beautiful panorama for your wedding photos.
A great place to start a tradition. Return each year to celebrate your anniversary. With a bounty charming inns and resorts, you will never run out of places to discover new experiences.

s winter melts away, a new surge of life appears in the woodlands of the High
Country. Rich hues of green form on tree branches, the rhododendron brighten, streams gush fresh mountain water, and the air is crisp and clean. Mother Nature awakens creation all around and welcomes celebrations of new beginnings to the mountains. Inhale Spring and let its natural beauty inspire your wedding style.

A humble curtain of sweet peas sets the stage for the ceremony site. A backdrop constructed out of a simple birch pole and wool, frames the table. Fritillaria, ranunculus, tulips and ferns anchor the table arrangement and are surrounded by a fragrant bay leaf garland.
The bride donned a simple, yet elegant dress by local designer Whitney Deal, very clean with just the right amount of feminine detail in the beading and fabric flow. Light coral tones serve as a palette for the eyes and lips, evoking the feeling of spring and providing a lovely contrast to the surrounding greenery.

Alice found her wedding wonderland deep in the woods behind Camp Sky Ranch, not far from the Blue Ridge Parkway. Local talent collaborated for this “Alice in Wonderland” inspired shoot, filled with eye candy and whimsy. Every quirky and fun detail boasts color and creativity, bringing warmth and life to the muted winter woodland.
inspiration “This styled shoot was inspired by a mash-up of Disney’s “Alice in Wonderland” and Tim Burton’s take on the beloved tale,” said session photographer Jessica of Wayfaring Wanderer. Upper Barn Rentals provided a beautiful reclaimed wood table topped with place settings of vintage glass, mismatched plates, and antique teacups and saucers. “I love making a vision come to life, and had a lot to add to the visual aspect of this shoot with our inventory,” said Miss Match Rentals owner Andi Gelsthorpe. The inspired place settings were trimmed with moss, eclectic treasures, and colorful floral arrangements spilling from bird cages, pitchers, pots, and even frogs! Floral designer Desi Parker, owner of Desi’s Floral & Design said, “With my degree and background in theatre and film, I find myself gravitating more toward projects and events that fall into the category of ‘a production.’” Wendy Gordon, owner of the Gamekeeper restaurant, contributed tempting teacakes and decadent cupcakes that would drive a Hatter mad.

TRADITION PHOTOS BY MATT POWELL PRODUCTIONS
P
riyam and Bhaskar were engaged toward the end of March, and July 3 was chosen as their wedding date. They had just three months to plan a wedding with a guest list of around 300 people, and at least four different ceremonies! This meant four outfit changes for Bhaskar and six outfits for Priyam. Traditional Hindu Vedic ceremonies can last up to several days, but the couple managed to consolidate their wedding into two days. Each ceremony in a Vedic marriage is significant to the religion and Hindu mythology, so trying to figure out what to exclude was a bit difficult. In the end, they entertained guests at the haldi (a party for groom and bride), mehendi and sangeet (the evening before the wedding), jai mala (day of the wedding), and the actual wedding itself.
10
Henna The mehendi ceremony is held to apply henna to the hands of the women attending the wedding, as well as the bride. The modern custom is to have the bride’s henna done beforehand, as it is extremely elaborate. Two days before the wedding, Priyam went to Charlotte Mehendi to get her henna done; it took approximately six hours! Nimi, the henna artist, applied the henna up to her elbows on both arms, and halfway up her legs. The design she chose had a bride and groom facing each other on each palm, and traditionally the groom’s name is hidden somewhere in the design. She also said that the darker your henna turns out, the more your mother-in-law (or some people say fiancé) loves you. Priyam’s henna was extremely dark, so lucky she!
The sangeet, a sort of prereception, was held immediately after the mehendi ceremony. The union-to-be is celebrated with singing, dancing, and a wonderful menu. It is also a talent competition between the bride’s and groom’s sides. The family and friends all sang, danced, and performed skits for an entertaining night. They decorated the ashram hall with flower arrangements traditional Indian décor.
Flowers Both in worship and in portrayals of the divine, Hindus are infatuated with flowers. The very name of the Hindu worship ritual, puja, can be translated as “the flower act.” Local vendors Fuschia Moss Floral Design & Desi’s Floral & Design teamed up for their first traditional Hindu wedding. They constructed the main ceremonial structure called the Mundap. Typically a traditional Mundap has elaborate draping, pillars and columns however the bride envisioned a rustic design. They covered the 10 x10x8 foot tall structure with willow branches and greenery. Next, they began adding the flowers using over 50 different varieties and 1,400 stems. Many blooms came from around the world, as well as from local provider, Shady Grove Gardens & Nursery. They incorporated more than 10 different types of rose, coral peony, oriental lily, stock, tulip, mini calla, hydrangea, honeysuckle vine, lotus pods and many, many more.

The wedding ceremony began with Bhaskar’s arrival to a happy, music-filled procession called a Barat, accompanied by his family and friends. He was greeted by Priyam’s mother, who placed a small marking on his forehead as a symbol of her wish for the young couple’s lifelong happiness and success.
In addition to exchanging rings, the couple exchanged flower garlands called Varmala, to symbolize their love. Family members also exchanged garlands to welcome the marriage. The garlands are made of brightly hued flowers; here the floral team used a combination of red roses, yellow and white chrysanthemums. When the couple first see each other the day of the wedding. Family and friends also showered rose petals onto the couple during this ceremony. “We could not have gotten married in a more beautiful and serene location than Boone,” said Priyam. “It was heaven on Earth. Bhaskar and I are amazed at how the wedding came together, especially with all the last minute work our vendors pulled off to make it a breathtaking event.”

High Country Wedding Guide is excited to celebrate one of our local vendors, Mrs. Ellen Gwin Burnette! After years of capturing weddings of many other couples from behind her camera lens, it was time for beloved photographer Ellen Gwin to take her turn down the aisle for her very own High Country wedding. Over the years, she has worked with local vendors and built special friendships along the way, Ellen knew exactly who to ask to help her pull off her dream Fall wedding. “We wanted to work with so many people I had collaborated with as a wedding photographer who have become great friends over the years,” said Ellen. “We wanted a Fall wedding that incorporated local elements from Boone-the place where we met, work, live, and love.”
Kevin is of a Scottish heritage and one of his tartans inspired the couple’s color palette for the flowers and decor. For the menu, a specially-prepared gluten free spread from appetizers to desserts was created with Ellen in mind, but was enjoyed by all. Ellen’s mother, Elaine ,created the cake toppers to resemble Christmas ornaments they had as children, which will adorn the couple’s Christmas tree.

Enchanted Romance The contrast of 1920’s “Gatsby” glamour against a woodland backdrop inspired this enchanting photo shoot. Local artists and vendors created a beautiful candlelit setting deep in the forest, drawing inspiration from the “Twilight” film trilogy and “Downton Abbey” series.
Floral arrangements made of rich crimson red roses draped from golden candelabras. A large ivory damask tablecloth provided a beautiful backdrop for a formal place setting accompanied by vintage linen and lace napkins. Miss Match Rentals contributed many items including colored Avon goblets circa early 1970s. A Bushel and a Peck Vintage Rentals added beautiful furniture such as the rustic mantle, Victorian tufted arm chairs, the antique dresser, and the green-with-envy sofa.
The featured gown is a classic mermaid style with modified sweetheart neckline in light gold with ivory lace overlay. The earrings, necklace, and hair piece are made of amber and crystals inlaid in gold. This dress and accessories are available at Bridal Traditions in Wilkesboro; the dress is from their private collection.

Once upon a time, there was a little girl who dreamed of the day she would meet her prince charming and marry in a spectacular castle, celebrating with her loved ones from near and far. As she grew older, the thought of a fairy-tale wedding became a fleeting dream. Then one day, she met her prince charming and before she knew it, she was engaged to marry the man of her dreams. She never thought creating the wedding she longed for as a little girl could be possible. She searched high and low for a grand venue that fulfilled her vision, and to her surprise she found a beautiful castle perched on a scenic mountaintop and surrounded by sweeping vistas. And so the planning began… It has been a trend for couples marrying in the High Country to incorporate rustic, natural elements into their wedding styles. But do girls dream of this style of wedding when they are little? I certainly did not, and I’m confident my friends didn’t either. We grew up watching magical Disney weddings and dressing up as princesses. These fantasy weddings sparked our imaginations to dream of what our own could be someday with royal processions and beautiful gowns followed by long, magnificent trains. We hope this styled shoot at Smithmore Castle will inspire you to dream big and imagine a majestic celebration filled with elegance, enchantment, and regal details just like you may have once imagined. View the mountains as a backdrop for an elaborate, formal affair for the wedding you and your guests will never forget.

Callie & Chris
august 24, 2014 linville ridge country club linville, nc Callie’s goal was to make sure everyone had fun at their wedding. A 4-day High Country extravaganza, complete with a welcome tailgate, barbeque, cornhole, nuptial namaste yoga, nuptial Ironman tournament, and a farewell croquet brunch and tournament helped the couple keep their guests busy – even after the reception. At their rustic-chic summer formal wedding in gorgeous Linville, NC, the bride and groom danced to “If We Fall In Love Tonight” by Rod Stewart. The cake, a Cuban rum cake with coconut sweet cream filling, was an homage to the bride’s Miami, FL roots.

Tracy & Matt
october 19, 2013 - rumple memorial presbyterian and green park inn - blowing rock, nc
“Family” was the theme for this sentimental wedding in the couple’s home of Blowing Rock. The ceremony was held at the church where Tracy’s parents were married, and where Tracy was baptized. Tracy’s father made the bark flower boxes at the church, and the aisles were adorned with childhood pictures of the bride and groom. The bride’s bouquet had three white roses, in memory of the couple’s grandmothers. A shared love of hunting inspired shotgun shell boutonnieres and a bow tie made of real turkey feathers. Tracy’s engagement ring was created with Matt’s “Nannie’s” diamond. The bride wore a charm bracelet with “M” and “T” charms, her mother’s cap-style wedding veil, and blue & brown cowboy boots. Guests enjoyed wedding samplers, cross-stitched by the couple’s parents, that hung on the walls at the reception, along with pictures from family weddings. Tracy and Matt made their getaway in her father’s A-Model Ford.

These Appalachian State grads chose the mountains as the backdrop for their Southern classic wedding at Westglow Resort. The groom’s father officiated, and wedding guests stood along the porch during the ceremony, creating an intimate setting. When Hailey placed John’s grandfather’s wedding ring on his finger, it had their married initials and wedding date engraved next to his grandparents’ initials and wedding date, 6/22/1940. The Southern menu that followed at Grandfather Vineyard & Winery included barbeque, fried chicken, peach cobbler, and banana pudding served in mini Mason jars. A clear tent adorned with chandeliers offered starry views of the vineyard while gold accents added to the ambiance.

august 11, 2014 - leatherwood mountains - ferguson, nc
Bryson and Kayleigh chose the High Country for their elopement because of the fond memories made here. As children, they both vacationed in the area. Kayleigh’s grandparents owned a very rustic cabin nearby that she loved visiting as a child and Bryson’s family frequently went camping in the area. Later, during a hiking trip, Bryson proposed to Kayleigh on the porch of a cabin at Leatherwood Mountains Resort. They decided they would later return to Leatherwood for their elopement and a relaxing and quiet honeymoon to follow. Kayleigh shares, “We spent our entire wedding day in a sort of relaxed, awe-filled daze. It was a very loosely planned day, which made every part feel organic and special.”

Steph & Justin
april 26, 2014 - crestwood resort, boone, nc This couple’s story starts long before they were born, about 35 years ago when Steph and Justin’s parents were best friends in college. Cross-country moves, careers, and growing families put distance between the two couples. Years later, Steph and Justin both attended Auburn University and later met one night in 2011, when their shared new employer invited both of them to dinner. They quickly made a connection and shared how they had heard stories about each other’s families, but had never met. Their connection went far beyond this realization and after 35 years, the two families were reunited for Steph and Justin’s wedding at Crestwood Resort. After the reception, the couple drove to an overlook near Grandfather Mountain where they reflected on their serendipity.

may 24, 2014 - twickenham house, jefferson, nc
Perfect spring weather and stunning scenery made this mountaintop wedding a dream come true. A blend of Great Gatsby-meets-mountains, Jessica opted for a vintage-glam-bohemian theme. She wore red lipstick, an ornate jeweled headband hand-crafted by her mother-inlaw, and a beaded gown by Sarah Seven. Her bridesmaids wore mismatched beaded gowns in various shades of silver and gold. The couple married in front of a large awning they created with colorful ribbons. They began with a bourbon ceremony, a unique tribute to their mutual love of this drink. They exchanged heartfelt personal vows and rings provided by their ring-bearing English Bulldog, Olive. The reception on the lawn of the Twickenham House featured Smoky Mountain barbeque and bluegrass music. After a first dance, they joined their friends and family inside the house for an all-night celebration.

june 14, 2014 - eseeola, linville, nc Kendall is an Appalachian State grad, and after several mountain getaways, Nic fell in love with the area as well. They settled on a mountain chic wedding at the stunning Camp at Eseeola Lodge. They let the natural beauty of the surrounding mountains serve as most of the décor. Pinks, lavenders, peaches and creams kept everything soft. Guests received “mini books” from minted.com that served as a wedding weekend guide for guests. The ceremony was under a large oak tree, so an image of an oak tree appeared on the program, guest boxes, koozies and the menu. Nic’s Greek heritage warranted a Greek crowning as part of the ceremony. The crowns were the same ones worn by his grandparents 68 years ago. Bride and groom performed a choreographed swing dance to Pharrell’s “Happy” before the bride’s mom surprised the entire reception party with a fireworks show.

“H
ave you set a date yet?” curious friends would often ask. “Yep! We’re getting married on June 29th, 2014.”
Cody’s birthday is April 29th and mine is on September 29th, so I wanted to get married on June 29th, smack dab between our birthdays. It was a cute idea, but the closer we inched toward that date, the less confident we became about whether this was really going to happen. We had an extended engagement without any solid plans (other than a date) to make it official because Cody and I thought we hadn’t saved up enough money for a proper wedding. That was, until we began to question what a “proper” wedding was. After seeing some dear friends get married “their way” at the end of April, Cody and I were inspired to create our own little celebration befitting of the commitment we wanted to make to one another. I realized, after witnessing their heartfelt ceremony, the most important thing was that he and I were married at the end of the day. The commitment mattered the most. My expectations suddenly vanished and we decided to plan our unconventional wedding organized in a few weeks. I confided in a wedding industry friend that Cody and I were hoping to get married this summer and we were looking for an affordable outdoor wedding venue to get the ball rolling. Out of the blue, she generously offered us the use of her rustic barn, creek, and field. We fell in love with the picturesque outdoor setting and I knew instantly that Desi’s Farm was the venue we were looking for. I envisioned our intimate ceremony tucked in the woods on the edge of the creek followed by a reception at the open barn surrounded by an expansive field and mountain views. It was dreamy - a rustic-styled wedding with a few DIY elements, and nature’s beauty to do most of the decorating. While the venue was settled in May, the rest of the details didn’t begin falling into place until 2-3 weeks before the wedding day.
There were many instances where I should have been freaking out, like when the dress I ordered online didn’t get here until 3 days before the wedding or the fact that I didn’t get a wedding photographer booked until 2 days before our big day. My mantra became the fact that Cody and I would be married at the end of day and that everything else would be a bonus.
Story by Wayfaring Wanderer Photography by Kimberlee Edwards Photography
We decided to take the slender $1,000 budget we had saved and tap into relationships and resources available to us here in the Boone community to bring everything together.
the details
To save money, many of the details were bartered or traded - I’m a wedding photographer and graphic/web designer - while other items were donated and loaned to us by friends, colleagues, and family. We ended up spending less than our budget with all of the support we received. Allowing others to help was one of my biggest hurdles, but in the end it was the only way we were able to pull off our spontaneous fete. Cody and I were excited about making this life-long commitment to one another even though it was scary to just “let go” and hope that everything would come together in the end. It took a lot of surrendering to make it through, but planning a wedding in three weeks
has given us a we-can-do-absolutelyanything attitude and our lives are changing for the better. Yes, it was a little crazy for a few weeks leading up to (and after) the wedding, but I managed to handle everything fairly stress free even though loose ends were still dangling days before we said “I do.” Through a wonderful community effort, things came together fairly seamlessly. In fact, I totally felt like I cheated in the end because it felt too easy. Our wedding was an absolute blast, it was an incredible day that far exceeded my hopes. My favorite part was definitely our heartfelt ceremony by the creek where we exchanged rings in the rushing water. It felt like I was in a fairy tale.
