Board,
In Montgomery County

For twenty-six years, The Community Foundation’s Montgomery County Advisory Board and staff have connected with hundreds of individuals, families, and businesses, supporting them to make a profound impact through their giving—especially here in our local community. Tonight, we celebrate our network of donors, philanthropic partners, and local nonprofit grantees for growing the spirit of generosity throughout Montgomery County.

We are especially delighted to salute Mimi Brodsky Kress as our 2022 Montgomery County Philanthropist of the Year. Her inspiring example demonstrates what’s possible when one is committed to building communities where all people can reach their full potential.

We are deeply grateful to our corporate event sponsors for underwriting the Celebration and to our Community Champions supporting The Community Foundation’s leadership work. Your support fuels The Community Foundation’s efforts to ignite the power of philanthropy, catalyze community impact, and respond to critical community needs.

Finally, to the new friends here tonight, we hope you will join our community of givers! We are excited to share with you the many ways that you can partner with The Community Foundation to make a deep and lasting impact on the causes you care about most.

Dear Friends:

2022 Montgomery County

Mimi Brodsky Kress

Mimi Brodsky Kress credits her parents and grandparents for instilling in her the Jewish principle of Tikkun Olam, to repair the world. As a third generation Washingtonian, Mimi and her husband, Michael Kress, continued that tradition by teaching their children, Jenna and Max, the importance of giving back to their home community. As a family, they have devoted significant time, talent, and resources to organizations advancing social justice causes.

Professionally, Mimi got her start in the building industry after graduating from Colby College. Her dad, builder Albert Brodsky, encouraged her to pursue an apprenticeship program which helped Mimi discover her love for the field, as she quickly rose in the ranks in her first job with a homebuilder to become assistant superintendent. After then working with her brother, Joel, for almost a decade building light industrial warehouse projects, they teamed up with Mimi’s friend, Phil Leibovitz, to launch their own homebuilding company, Springbrook Builders. They built hundreds of homes in suburban Maryland and Virginia, and after eight years, Mimi’s brother wanted to go back to commercial building and she wanted to continue with her passion for building homes. Mimi and Phil joined as owners of Sandy Spring Builders in 1998, which at the time was a very small homebuilder. Under their vision and leadership, they grew Sandy Spring Builders into one of the premier custom homebuilders in the area. One of the few women in the industry, Mimi often credits her mother, Lois Badt Brodsky, for being her role model and demonstrating what a strong, independent woman can accomplish. With her signature “take-charge” attitude, Mimi is the heart of the company’s philanthropic leadership, ensuring the team leverages its resources to strengthen the local community which has fostered its success.

Mimi’s skills as a builder and connector have been truly game-changing for several local charities, particularly those expanding access to mental health care and affordable housing. As Board President for the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI-MC), Mimi’s leadership was instrumental in tripling the program budget, enabling the organization to expand vital supports throughout Montgomery County. In addition, Mimi has educated countless friends on the housing insecurity crisis through her work with Habitat for Humanity Metro Washington, and taught them the unique joy that comes from rolling up one’s sleeves to help people to build their own homes.

With her trademark energy and passion, Mimi’s philanthropic leadership has touched the lives of thousands of people across Montgomery County. We are grateful to her for setting an inspiring example of what’s possible when one is committed to building more equitable, just, and thriving communities where everyone can prosper.
