PUBLISHER’S LETTER
SPRING HAS COME… SORT OF
T
hey say spring showers bring May flowers, but let’s face it, the run of wet and cold winter we have had the last few weeks was not only needed, but just might bring those May flowers to the HD. Our usually dry High Desert has seen more rain the last few months than we have had in at least eleven years. The Mojave River looked like just that, a river rather than a dry sand run and purple Herb Robert covered the open fields in Apple Valley. There was even a temporary winter wonderland in Oak Hills with a snow-covered landscape throughout the Cajon Pass. On that note we start with our feature on the best spots locally to catch some fresh powder—there is plenty of it in surrounding areas such as Wrightwood and Big Bear, so get your gear ready to hit the slopes. Our cover feature spotlights Omar Alfaro who I have personally known for over 10 years now. I have seen Omar experience tremendous growth with his real estate business and we are proud to bring you his story as he works daily to change the game of real estate in the HD. We also have a few great spotlights on local personalities such as Mia Mocha of 96.3, the music of the High D Boys and Mike Nutter of Hub Insurance. So as always, enjoy as we bring you the best our HD has to offer. Frank Castillo, Publisher & CEO frankc@hdlivingmagazine.com

MIA MOCHA: A VOICE FOR GOOD IN THE HD
Y
ou can hear her middays as she plays and talks up the tunes on HD 96.3, the High Desert’s Hip Hop and R&B radio station, but Mia Mocha uses her voice in other powerfully good ways, too. With a generous spirit and a heart for others, Mia works hard to help whenever and wherever she can. She’s raised her family, including her three children, Bianca, Christian, and Cameron as well as her nephew David, while encouraging them all to pursue education. It’s paid off too as Bianca sits for the California Bar exam in June. The example she set for her children has sparked their desire to serve others, too. As a radio personality, Mia is able to use her voice and her audience to help make a difference in the lives of women and children, here and around the world. She supports organizations determined to end human trafficking, promote
www.hdlivingmagazine.com
education, and to lift women and children out of poverty. Mia has volunteered as MC and hostess for dozens of nonprofit groups, fundraisers, and charitable organizations around the high desert. Mia is the recipient of numerous awards for her work with high school students, women’s groups, and more. Growing up in a large family, Mia had three ambitions growing up: 1, to be a television newscaster, 2, to be an animator, and 3, to be a nun! Two out of three is not bad. Mia has worked in television news and is working on illustrating and writing a children’s book, and as for the nun part, well her marriage and family got in the way of that goal, but her heart for service and her desire to do good in the world can be counted as meeting that dream. Next time you’re traversing up and down the radio dial, take a listen to the lovely Mia Mocha. By Susan Landers

ARTS & CULTURE
The High Energy High D Boys Photo by Daniel Hayes
O
he fun, fabulous High-D Boys have been a fixture in the local music scene for going on nine years now. Featuring Robert Blomker on vocals and ukulele, Phil Clevinger on washtub bass, sousaphone, and cornet, Daniel Reyes on guitar, and Mike Kelly on banjo and guitar, this high-energy pop/folk/comedy group often bills themselves as “The Worst Band in Southern California,” however, they are anything but that. It would actually be more accurate to say they play everything you like, in fresh ways you’ve never heard before. The result is nothing short of delightful, and you owe it to yourself to check them out! The High-D Boys started as a ukulele jazz band, with original members Patrick Summers and Javier AlcantaraRojas, but they evolved into more of a show band, which was a natural evolution, thanks to Blomker’s theater background. They are not a band that stands there and plays one song
16 High Desert Living magazine
after another. They encourage audience participation and the energy that brings, and they banter and joke with the crowd between songs, which creates magical experiences that are never the same twice. One of the things that contributes to this magic is that, beyond the fact they are talented and have a diverse playlist, the High-D Boys are just nice guys, and that radiates off the stage. You will just love them. You can experience the High-D Boys for yourself every month at the Desert Barn Brewery in Hesperia and the Wine Seller in Apple Valley, where they are crowd favorites. Enjoy! HOT GLASS RANCH Photos by Daniel Hayes
L
ucerne Valley glass artists Jon and Sheri Bush have been crafting exquisite, Tiffany-inspired works of glass art at their Hot Glass Ranch studio for over two decades now. They are gifted and prolific artists, and a visit to their holiday open house—held on the second weekend of each December— will boggle the imagination with the sheer variety and beauty of pieces they create—fanciful sea creatures, vases, goblets, ornaments, all shimmering and iridescent, and no two pieces are alike. Patrons of Tonyan’s Coffee Roastery might even recognize their work when they see the splendid glass light fixtures overhead while waiting for their lattes and Americanos. A warning: collecting their work can become addictive. A visit to their workshop will have you wanting at least one of everything. The open house is also a wonderful way to meet other art lovers in the community and
18 High Desert Living magazine
to meet the artists for yourself. They are warm and friendly and are happy to demonstrate how they craft their pieces. The Bushes have deep California roots: Sheri is a graduate of Cal-State San Bernardino, and Jon is a graduate of Cal-State Fullerton. Jon moved to his Lucerne Valley home several decades ago because he was looking for a place where he could have privacy and room for his glassblowing studio. The couple is known for demonstrating their glassblowing skills at the Colorado Renaissance Festival and the Hillcrest Festival of the Arts in Whittier, California, as well as at their holiday open house, and their work is featured at select boutiques and galleries from Los Angeles to Boston, including the Muckenthaler Museum Gift Shop in Fullerton, CA, and The Creative Arts Group in Sierra Madre, CA, and they are the recipients of countless awards.
Jon and Sheri do all of the painstaking groundwork and follow-up work involved in their art, including formulating and mixing the batches, loading and melting the glass, as well as the finding and polishing the completed pieces. When asked what he loves about his work, Jon Bush muses, “The roar of the furnaces; the warmth. The smell of burnt wood and the smell of beeswax…the immediacy.” He loves the combination of loud furnaces and rock and roll. He is enamored with the feel of a material that moves on its own, that has a life, he says— a timing. Glass is the only material that moves its own way, he observes, ensuring that every handmade piece is one-of-a-kind. By Elisa Urmston

HD HEALTH MATTERS
A NECESSARY INTRODUCTION
A
llow me to introduce you to a part of your body that is normally not given much thought until there is a major problem. This part— or more accurately this organ—is your liver. Your liver weighs about three pounds, is one of your largest internal organs, and is located in the right upper abdominal region; in an adult, the liver is roughly the size of a football. The liver has more than 500 functions that we currently know about. The liver is vitally important in everything from your immune system, digestion, storing energy and other nutrients, detoxification, building proteins, and even hormone regulation. Thankfully, the liver is so amazing that during a crisis where part of your liver is damaged, we can count on the remaining parts of the liver to sustain life for us, up to a point. The stats show that 1 in 10 Americans will have some form of liver disease, while every year, 19,500 people die from liver cancer and 49,500 die from liver cirrhosis; a study even showed that about 10% of teens in the US have non alcoholic fatty liver disease!
22 High Desert Living magazine
Here is a list of some of the known liver functions: The liver filters and processes blood, regulates composition of blood, metabolizes or breaks down nutrients, stores nutrients, removes toxins from the blood, makes blood clotting proteins, produces cholesterol, and everything that goes into the mouth gets digested and will be immediately filtered by the liver, which produces albumin, production of bile (which helps carry away waste and breaks down fats like omega 3 fish oil and fat soluble vitamins like Vitamins A D E and K). It converts excess glucose into glycogen for storage (glycogen can later be converted back to glucose for energy), regulates blood levels of amino acids (which form the building blocks of proteins), stores iron, converts ammonia to urea (which is an end product of protein metabolism and is excreted in the urine), helps resist infections by making immune factors and removing bacteria from the bloodstream, clears bilirubin (from red blood cells, if there is an accumulation of bilirubin, the skin and eyes can yellow).
WINTER/SPRING 2019
HD HEALTH MATTERS
CAUSES OF LIVER DISEASE: Viral infections, alcohol, inflammation, medications (especially acetaminophen), and fatty deposits can lead to scar tissue which in turn leads to liver cirrhosis, fast weight loss, malnutrition, obesity, the need for gastric bypass surgery, high cholesterol, high triglycerides, type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, sleep apnea, hypothyroidism, hypopituitarism, and exposure to toxins. COMMON LABELS OF LIVER DISORDERS INCLUDE: Cirrhosis, Hepatitis (A, B, C, D, and E), Cancer, Alcoholic fatty liver disease, non alcoholic fatty liver disease, Autoimmune or inherited liver disease (appreciate that as an example of our continual learning about the body, what doctors initially called “autoimmune liver disease” later became HIV/AIDS as their knowledge changed), and fatty liver disease (Steatosis) SIGNS TO IDENTIFY LIVER DISEASE: Digestive bloating and gas, right shoulder pain, yellowing of the white of eyes, skin issues like itching feet and palms, large bloated belly, weakness, fatigue, weight loss, vomiting, abdominal pain, swelling of the legs, jaundice (yellow discoloration of skin), feeling tired, loss of appetite, nausea, confusion, trouble concentrating, dark urine, bruising easily, excessive sweat, constipation, pale or dark tar-colored stool, dry and dark patches on neck and under arms, the buildup of fluid in the body, watery loose stools, and grey or white floating stools WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT Like many solutions, there is not one thing to do, but more a combination of doing more of the good things and less of the bad things. Here is a list of the good things to help your liver: eat bitter foods, eat collard greens, eat radishes, eat kale, eat healthy fats, consume apple cider vinegar, control and stabilize blood sugar, eat cabbage, eat liver meat, eat cauliflower, eat broccoli, eat Brussels sprouts, eat asparagus, eat beets, eat celery, eat Spanish black radish, take milk thistle, exercise, eat turmeric, take berberine, get good restorative sleep, filter your air, filter your water, and reduce stress. Here is a list of things to cut out to help your liver be healthy: alcohol, bad oils, trans fats, toxins (from the air, water, food and personal care products like cleaning products, shampoo, deodorants, tooth paste, cosmetics, and more, check out EWG.org for more resources), drugs (Acetaminophen is the leading cause of acute liver failure), high carbohydrate foods, sugary drinks, processed foods, high fructose corn syrup, foods stored in BPA plastic, MSG; you need to also understand that fructose sugar is only be metabolized by the liver and too much fructose can be a liver stressor (sources of fructose include high fructose corn syrup, fruit, fruit juice, agave, and honey).
of liver disease but sub-clinically have liver damage, which is why it is important to live a healthy life; you don’t want liver problems, so get yearly blood labs to check your liver. Understand that we are seeing dramatic increases in the number of Americans, both young and old, developing liver issues. Understand that commonly we see healthy liver, which under the right circumstances, turns into fatty liver (which is reversible), which can lead to scaring (which is permanent damage) of liver tissue which prevents the liver from functioning properly. This scaring leads further to liver cirrhosis. Quite commonly I see the following situation unfold in my practice: a patient comes in and informs me that they recently had blood lab work and we proceed to look through it, I often find people with elevated liver enzymes on this check up but their doctor suggested they just monitor them (or worse, failed to mention it all together), I send the patient for a liver ultrasound and find either gall stones or fatty liver, their primary doctor again will suggest that monitoring their fatty liver as the best course of action. This is the equivalent of watching someone standing on the cliff of liver cirrhosis, which in my practice, I do not recommend. We recommend action steps that can support the body’s natural healing ability to help patients take steps away from the cirrhosis cliff. The liver can heal, but it takes time, sometimes even up to three or more years. I want to leave you with a deep thought. If an animal population, say tuna fish, was having one out of ten of its young having issues with an organ, say their liver, would we think the solution would be “what drug to give them” or “we should just monitor the problem?” Or, would we look at their environment to see what is going on that was the root cause of this issue? Exactly; we would look into the deeper root causes and have a prevention strategy. Unfortunately, most of what we do as far as health care is reactive not proactive. So get proactive and live a healthy lifestyle. Until we meet again in the next issue of HD Living Magazine.

CHANGING THE GAME
W
hile most don’t realize it, Real Estate is a game. Buy low, sell high, do what you can to maximize your profits, and get your buyer to best deal possible. Negotiate the best price, and most importantly, agree on the deal that makes both parties feel like they’ve won. We all want these things and more, and is what Omar Alfaro and the professionals at Intero Real Estate Services High Desert bring to the table. You see, Omar has been at the game for a while now and is changing the way real estate in the HD is perceived. With 16 years experience and almost 1000 closed real estate transactions to date, he wants to continue to make his presence known in the local community while streamlining the process of selling homes and making home ownership a dream come true for you. After purchasing his first home at the age of 24, Omar was hooked. The dream of becoming a homeowner made him realize that helping others do the same was exactly the feeling that he wanted for all his clients. He chose the real estate industry to make that happen and it became his passion the last 16 years. He’s grown from a local agent to one of the area’s top brokers with Intero Real Estate Services.

T
he mountains surrounding the high desert here in Southern California get a good amount of snow almost every winter. Because of this, there are three wonderful ski resorts that offer some really great options for anybody looking to get away from the daily grind and partake in a number of snow related sports, such as skiing and snowboarding. In this first article in a series of three focusing on action sports in the High Desert, we are going to explore the more extreme side of these two sports, snowboarding, as well as the riders themselves, and the ski resorts that cater to them. Let’s start with Mountain High Resort, located in the beautiful community of Wrightwood, Ca, about a 40 minute drive from downtown Victorville. Mountain High has been in operation since 1937, and has long been a favorite go-to place for the snowboarders here in Southern California. The park offers many different runs for all different skill levels, and is very attuned to the wants and needs of the snowboarder community. Next up are the two resorts in the Big Bear Mountain area, both within an hour’s drive from the high desert, Bear Mountain Ski Resort and Snow Summit Ski Resort. Each has its own unique features.
www.hdlivingmagazine.com
High Desert Living magazine 31
Bear Mountain offers world class skiing and snowboarding, but also is known for its laid-back attractions in the nearby city of Big Bear, with plenty of shopping and dining venues to explore. Snow Summit, on the other hand, caters more to the younger crowd, offering a snowboard park with jumps, rails and half-pipes for them to practice their gold medal winning tricks on, all while still being relatively close to the dining and nightlife of downtown Big Bear City. Having easy access to the local ski resorts has played a major role in the overall growth of the sport locally. John McColly, VP of sales and marketing at Mountain High Resorts, says that the snowboarding and action sports community is very strong here in Southern California, and despite the recent economic downturn, McColly says the resort has been able to operate without any major problems. Snowboarding was born in Southern California—as a lot of extreme sports are— and really started to pick up steam in the mid to late 90’s, having evolved from within the surf/ skateboard/ski scenes which have been such a prevalent part of the California lifestyle for decades. Snowboarding is roughly a $250 million dollar industry though it has seen a decline since it’s peak around 2007. Despite this, the people who do ride are very much dedicated to this fast, extreme sport, and don’t pay attention

to the numbers—only the latest winter storm forecast, as well as road and travel conditions in order to get to their favorite slope to ride. Wrightwood, Ca has produced a few professional riders, but one in particular has also gone on to the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea, and her name is Maddie Mastro. She grew up in Wrightwood in a family that was always big on skiing. She started skiing at the age of two and then picked up snowboarding at the age of six, at which time she was hooked on the sport. Though she wasn’t able to medal at the Olympics, she is still competing at the professional level. 2019 has been a stellar year for snowfall at Mountain High— with a base of 69 inches and a top season snowfall to date at 101 inches, riders should be able to hit the slopes possibly into the early to mid part of April, depending on the weather. If you have ever wanted to try skiing or snowboarding, take a trip up to our local ski resorts and support our local economy. A trip to the mountains makes for a wonderful family adventure that your family will never forget, and who knows, maybe by doing so, you will be sparking the interest of a future Olympic medalist. KALLANS BAR & GRILL
T
ruth be told, I walked in expecting mediocre but was quickly and pleasantly taken aback. My first impression was set in place as a friendly greeting and a beautiful smile welcomed me from behind the bar. My visit was unexpected, so Cindy, the charismatic bartender, had no clue I was there to take notes. I sipped chardonnay, drooled over the menu, and watched staff/customer interactions before I chose to extend my hand to introduced myself. Cindy was attentive to all in her care and was quite gracious as I pelted her with questions. The atmosphere also exceeded my expectations. Kallans is not a typical sports bar. Yes, they have the all the usual perks—numerous TVs, a pool table, a rockin’ juke box, etc. But, what impressed me is the ambiance. There’s a comfortable, yet contemporary, elegance about the place. I overheard someone saying it had a “cool vibe” and I found myself nodding in agreement. It’s family-friendly, so you can feel comfortable treating your kids to a delicious meal, and the charming, picturesque patio is on-point for date-nights. If you’re looking to put work behind you and blow off a little steam, the vibe changes at 9:00 pm—when the adults come out to play. It’s a happening hot spot for music, themed parties, viewing sporting events, and pay-per-view boxing matches. You know—fun! Be sure to bring your appetite because Kallans takes food seriously, and their menu reflects it. Like tacos? Well, there are six varieties to choose from. They offer a wide range of appetizers, salads, gourmet sandwiches, and generous burgers. They’ve also got several vegan options, which is a huge plus. And, your kids—well, they’ve got their backs, too. If it’s your sweet tooth that needs attention, you may want to spend some time with Kallans’ dessert menu. It’s all good. Proprietors Shadi Haddad, Stephanie Martin, and Ken Giberson should be praised for their team and training, as every one of their staff family appeared pumped to provide an exceptional experience for their guests. And, as I watched Ken work the room, introducing himself and showing genuine appreciation for his patrons, it was clear to me that management leads by example. By Stephanie Morris

SUSAN’S CORNER
CHOOSE TO OFFER OTHERS KINDNESS AND UNDERSTANDING
W
e live in a cruel and difficult world, no doubt about it. Just watching the evening news can send any compassionate person into a full blown depressive state. For some with actual depression, anxiety, chronic pain, or other debilitating condition, however, just making it through one day to the next is a masterful feat of strength that many do not even recognize. A couple of years ago, I turned Susan’s Corner over to my friend and colleague, Stephanie Morris, who wrote about the devastating impact of suicide. It was a powerful column that received many kudos from others who were touched by her words. The overall message of Steph’s column was kindness. Kindness to others is never a bad idea because we often never know the struggles that others are facing, the invisible pain they are suffering, the mental anguish or grief they are bearing, or the overwhelming anxiety they are masking. Awareness about anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues is growing, but here is another reminder that others are walking past us every day and are hurting in ways that we cannot see. We never know the impact that a kind word or a smile can have on someone, whether we know them or not. Choosing compassion, kindness, and understanding is never a bad thing. There are resources to help those dealing with depression, anxiety, and other forms of mental illness. For a list of resources, articles about a variety of issues and topics related to mental and other health issues, and more, here is a link to a national clearinghouse: https://www. mhselfhelp.org/resources-topics Educating oneself about mental and emotional health is a first step to helping those around us. Check the next Susan’s Corner for more information and resources. In the meantime, we can start with being gentle to those we meet every day.
If you would like to see something special featured in Susan’s Corner, or if you have a special recipe, drop me a line and let me know about it at: Susan Landers at H.D. Living Magazine 6630 SLV Box Victorville, Ca. 92395, or e-mail me at susanl@hdlivingmagazine.com.
