NESHER ON SHNAT
We’re writing this at dusk from our Tel Aviv balcony while the rest of our Melbourne family and life is asleep at home. How cray. As three gals who have been in Habo pretty much all of our lives, it feels begun the experience that we’ve been thinking about for years. We feel so lucky to have actually left the country in a time when it’s so rare and to have the opportunity to fully embrace and be immersed into the Israeli life and culture going on around us. Even though we’re still quarantining in our apartment, the feelings of independence and freedom that we hoped for have already set in. We can’t wait for the rest of Nesher to get here and to watch our shichvah thrive on a journey we’ve all been working towards and waiting for for so so long. Lots and lots of love, Layla Light, Lucy Green and Lorri Gunn
MACHANE CHOREF Perth Machane Medura was a crazy, rainy, fun time for the Perth Ken. After COVID posed great doubts for if camp could even happen, the chanichim and madrichim were so grateful to be able to have these 4 days away in the bush (even though masks were were our themed dinners, including 80s aerobics night, a Monsters Inc theme, and an underground cordial speakeasy! The madrichim did a fantastic job dealing with their small tzvatim, and were so thankful for the help of Eyal madatzim who really saved the day. We’re looking forward to seeing our interstates friends and some sunshine on Kayetzet 2021.
Sydney Machane Zahav preparations were going smoothly, and the camp was shaping up to be an amazing experience! It was going COVID and everyone was so excited! All the madrichimot did an amazing job canvassing, be felt across all the chanichimot, with our huge success! However, due to the COVID postpone Machane Zahav to a later date once lockdown ends and restrictions allow. Despite the disappointing news, we are so excited to have Machane Zahav happen after lockdown, and can’t wait to make it happen :)
Melbourne After a lockdown and uncertainty around whether camp could even happen, the Melbourne Ken was so beyond thrilled to have our Winter Camp! 2021 Machane Choref was called ‘Machane Yekum’ (universe) and just like its name, it was OUT
the warmth of a café d convo. We are so happy and proud that chanichimot got to be back in the crazy and special environment that Habo camps are. Our madatzim, Ogen, (Year 11) were absolutely incredible and absolutely shined on camp! It was also so amazing to have some legendary Nesher and Eyalnicks (Year 12) leading along with our bogrim. Having so many shchavot running camp together was so awesome madrichim! We had an epic tzev mach crew who were made up of a mix
camp was phenomenal! It was such a chilled space and the biggest vibe ever! Watching chanichimot seriously thriving on camp was the greatest. They had the best time with friends, learning, laughing, doing toranut haha! Eyal also had their seminar on the campsite which was really cool. We are so keen to return back to person and continue the rest of the year!

An invitation to reflect, and reconnect, through music song that you haven't listened to in ages starts playing, bringing forth a whole heap of memories and feelings associated with a past experience? remember who you were with, or what you were doing, or where you were going, or even how you felt? This kind of mental and physical reaction is so powerful that it’s been found to bring forth alertness and awareness in patients with dementia, albeit temporarily, according to a study by Dan Cohen and the Australian Arts and Health Institute. Music has a way of digging out memories you didn’t even know you had, reminding us of past experiences which may have been forgotten; and on where you have been, where you are now, and where you are going. Use it as an opportunity to reconnect with people you shared those past experiences with but may have lost contact.

OF A BETTER WORLD By Charli Krite (givon)
From Gabe Freund (mekasher) the face one sees in a mirror, or the blue sky on the still surface of a lake, is ( השתקפותhishtakfut). This comes from the shoresh (root word) of ש ק פand is related to some other common words you might know like ( משקפייםmishkafayim) – glasses, or משקפת (mishkefet) – goggles or binoculars. Words with this shoresh almost always relate to the way in which we see things, often in a sense (like in the examples above) of things that make us see better or more clearly. Another important word that shares this shoresh, and is also best שיקוף community and a movement on a continuous journey of tikkun provide to each other when we are having a hard time seeing the about you tells you that you’re spending too much time on your phone and that you’re not present enough when you’re together. It is when a close friend or family member calls you out for being when someone tells you that you are a leader and to be mindful of the example you set for others who look up to you. It is when somebody you trust lets you know that your opinion matters to them or that the way you spoke upset them. It is when we hold a mirror up to someone we care about so that they can see things the way that we are is a critical part of what it means to grow, to build trust and show love.

Ehh It's a Tension... By Yael Grunseit and Kerryn Finn (ra'am) The word tension often brings about negative connotations, being in a tension is something that is seen to be uncomfortable and confusing. In Habonim Dror the concepts of critical thinking and intentionality are integral to our continuity and progression as a movement. Being in a tension allows us to seriously think about how we want to live our lives what Pesach calls ‘metach hagshama’. Once we fall out of a tension, we stop challenging the world in which we exist in, and therefore stop growing and moving. A common tension we as members of the youth movement face is identifying as a Left wing Zionist in today’s climate. Nowadays these identities are often at either end of a political spectrum, but we choose to reject this mainstream dichotomy. We are critical of our communities unfaltered support of Israel but also push back on those that condemn the Zionist movement all together. We see Zionism for all it’s complexity, and choose the uncomfortable position of wrestling with it’s tensions. One who has stopped grappling with such complexity has succumbed grappling with tensions like these are the essence of the movement. One that is to engage in true hagshama must not unquestioningly believe what the youth movement tells them is right. They must truly engage with it’s hagshama path through discourse with their partners, by challenging one another and coming to a shared understanding. Once one tension is destination, so neither do it’s tensions.
