An iconic, vibrant, connected & timeless sports & cultural hub of Singapore

Site / National Stadium and Old Airport Area in Kallang ,Singapore

Contribution / Site Visit, Context Analysis, Case Study, Concept & Strategy Design, Drawings, Modeling, Rendering, Presentation

The planning area is a recreational district located in the central region of Singapore and serves as a gateway linking the CBD to Changi Airport. The area is approximately 132 ha covering the National Stadium and Old Airport heritage site, which have attractive waterbody and greenery spaces. However, as the largest sports recreation node, the usage of the sports hub is very low, and the current event frequency is far from the Sport SG's target. Besides, this planning area is separated from adjacent neighborhoods by the large waterbody and CAT 1 roads which are both difficult to cross. Especially, the Nicoll High Way is approximately 90 m wide, which is a big barrier for enhancing the connection between the National Stadium and the Old Airport heritage site.

Based on our context analysis and sports hub case studies, we proposed a new vision - An iconic, vibrant, connected & timeless sports & cultural hub of Singapore to leverage and expand the strengths of sports and heritages. And we come up with four objectives to support this vision:

a. Sports-oriented precinct with a broad mix of sports-related industries.

b. Diverse, engaging, and sustainable communities.

c. High connectivity at national, regional, and sub-regional scales.

d. Distinctive and memorable destinations, and recognize heritage values.

01

Road Network

There is a lack of north-south link within kallang planning area, our planning area is separated from other areas.

STRENGTH

– Located near CBD

– Heritage & Culture @ national significance (Old Airport Terminal, National Stadium)

WEAKNESS

– Low usage of Sports Hub and large proportion of unbuilt land

Isochrone Map - MRT Station

The catchment of 10 minutes walking from MRT stations can cover the whole planning area. But 5 minutes walking does not work well.

Heritage

The heritage features in our planning area have weak connection with other heritage features in Kallang, especially the Little India and Jalan Besar.

Public Transit - Bus Stop

The density of bus stops in our planning area is smaller than other areas. Especiallly, near the National Stadium, there are only 6 bus tops.

– Disconnection between subzones and areas

OPPORTUNITY

– Current plans (LTPR, potential car-lite precinct @ Kampong Bugis, more sports facilities in Kallang Alive)

THREAT

– Sustainability

– Competition from more regional or integrated sports centers

Green & Blue System

There are abandant greenery and waterbody, however, the waterbody separate our planning area with other neighborhoods.

Land Availability

Most of temporare use plots in Kallang subzone area locates in our planning area.

Urban Design of Xieziwan Area

A greenery costal living townIndustrial area revitalization and transformation

Site / Xieziwan Area, Dalian, China

Instructor / Jian Dai

Urban Design Competition / Groupwork / 2020 Winter

Contribution / Context Analysis, Concept & Strategy Design, Sketch, Drawings, Modeling, Rendering

Dalian, as one of China's longstanding industrial cities, harbors a wealth of industrial heritage. Faced with these industrial legacies, it is our responsibility to reclaim this vital urban historical memory, to unleash the cultural and historical value contained within, and to imbue Dalian with enhanced vitality and creativity through urban renewal designs.

The project is located at Xieziwan. Within the site, the Dalian 523 Factory, being the first large-scale heavy machinery enterprise established in China, stands as an important industrial site in Dalian. Its future development will, to a certain extent, shape the course of urban design in Dalian. Xieziwan, known for its beautiful seaside bathing area, derives its name from its crablike shape.

Our design, grounded in the current state, adheres to the design values of 'ecology - landscape - nostalgia - city'. It integrates the built environment into ecological spaces and leverages the historical and cultural foundation to rejuvenate urban vitality. Through strategies like urban green corridors, vibrant axes, urban fabric regeneration, and biological resilience, we have envisioned Xieziwan as a place where mountains and sea interconnect, ecological environments are well-organized, and urban vitality is renewed.

How to encourage people to cycleA bike sharing system in Ithaca, New York

Site / Ithaca, New York, USA

Instructor / Waishan Qiu

Research Project / Individual Work / 2021 Spring

Public bicycles, as a convenient way of travelling short distances, have had a profound impact on people's daily journeys. In fact, more and more people are using bicycles in combination with other modes of transport, especially public transport, rather than replacing other modes of travelling altogether. Through an in-depth study of this target group, we will propose more quantitatively based strategies to improve people's travelling experience.

Green Infrastructure Improvement

Revitalising HegangA shrinking resource-based city in China

Site / Hegang, China

Instructor / Yuanxiang Wu

Undergraduate Third Year Studio / Individual Work / 2020 Fall

As a typical resource-based city in China, Hegang's urban economic and social development has historically relied heavily on early coal mining activities. However, with the shift in China's development focus and the implementation of sustainable development principles, Hegang has long been facing the dilemma of urban transformation and continuous shrinkage. The abundance of abandoned mines and related industrial relics has brought about numerous negative impacts on the city, including fragmented green infrastructure, sustained decline in urban vitality, disrupted ecological corridors, loss of cultural heritage, and expansion of negative spaces within the city.

This design aims to proactively address urban shrinkage in Hegang City from an ecological perspective. Through green infrastructure planning, it seeks to fully utilize the idle land resulting from urban shrinkage to tackle issues such as declining vitality and ecological degradation. The main strategy involves utilizing abandoned areas from contraction to establish ecological corridors, restoring urban biodiversity through ecological restoration, and revitalizing the city's vitality through a community park functional system. Ultimately, the goal is to achieve a habitat where humans coexist with nature, and both humans and various forms of life exhibit vitality in this new northern city.

Land Suitability Assessment for Green Infrastructure Construction

Overall, it takes into account the influences of multiple factors such as ecology, land use, economy, society, and biological migration. This involves the utilization of analysis methods including MSPA (Multi-Source Point Pattern Analysis), MCR (Monte Carlo Simulation), ENVI (Environmental Impact Assessment), NVDI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index), and FVC (Fractional Vegetation Cover). Additionally, CAD tools and data such as Landsat 8 remote sensing imagery and DEM elevation data are employed.

The assessment result shows the suitability degree of green infrastructure construction for all spaces within the planning area, which provides a solid evidence for further planning.

Concept Plan & Green Infrastructure Plan

As concept plan depicted, the plan primarily focuses on the development of two north-south green corridors, one to the east and one to the west. The eastern ecological green corridor serves to connect fragmented ecological source areas within the region, while the western corridor links the Xiaoxing'an Mountains with the urban area. At the junction of the eastern city boundary and the green corridor, a vibrant axis is proposed to serve as a linkage between ecology and vitality, ensuring that the spatial characteristics possess both ample ecological environments and vibrant activities. In urban areas, vibrant greenways are established to connect peripheral ecological lands with inner vitality parks, forming a structure of green penetration. The overall scheme balances ecology and vitality, respects nature, and enhances interaction between humans and nature.
