Some may define a successful career as making a name for oneself. But for Franklin Chua, a meaningful career must have a positive impact on the lives of others. Driven by that ideal, Franklin chose a career in the Defence Science and Technology Agency (DSTA). As a defence engineer in DSTA Land Systems Programme Centre, he plays an active role to acquire, develop and integrate advanced capabilities that enhance the operational effectiveness of the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF). Franklin is part of the DSTA team that led the development of the Trailblazer Countermine Vehicle. The vehicle is one of the most compact and fully tracked armoured countermine vehicle of its class in the world, and possesses an innovative lane marking system which dispenses javelin-like rods to indicate safe paths, thus blazing a trail for soldiers following in its wake.
for the SAF as the Trailblazer was put through the paces in the harsh terrain of Central India. Dusty conditions meant SAF troops experienced difficulties seeing the Trailblazer’s marker rods. In response, Franklin and his team coated the rods with luminous orange paint to improve their visibility. “While this was an improvised solution, it has now become standard practice in the SAF to use painted rods on all Trailblazers,” he says. For Franklin, defence engineering is not just about delivering a capability to the SAF – it is about constantly striving to make a positive impact and achieve mission success. “I witnessed how our technical solutions have eased and enhanced the way SAF soldiers operate. This has instilled a greater sense of purpose in me,” he says. His advice to graduates keen on becoming a part of DSTA: “Working in DSTA is a dynamic and rewarding experience that pushes one beyond the comfort zone to learn and respond to challenges positively.”
“My work has trained me to be adaptable, innovative and always have a positive attitude when faced with challenges,” he shares. During Exercise Bold Kurukshetra in India in 2010, Franklin and his team were on site to provide technical support

TIPS
hmmm....
for answering this interview question
“TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF”
N
Questions to expect from a head of department:
o matter what kind of job you’re after, you will be asked to talk about yourself in the interview. This allows the company to evaluate whether your professional and personal qualifications are suited to the job.
• What do you know about our company? • Why do you want to work for us? • What can you bring to the table that others can’t? • What do you think is the most and least attractive aspect of the job? • Why should we take you on? • What aspects of a job are most important to you? • What do you think the job will consist of? • Where do you see yourself in five years? • What are your pay expectations? • How flexible are you?
This is your opportunity to make a positive impression. It’s important that you spend the time talking about your qualifications and present yourself in a positive light.
Avoid repetition and practise
This should only take a few minutes, so you must be prepared to talk about yourself and your background without trying to say too much. It’s a very good idea to write down a few keywords and follow the points you’ve thought about in advance. This will help you to avoid repetition and include all of the important details. Always remember to practise what you want to say. You may want to ask someone you know – your spouse, partner or a friend – if they’ll listen to what you intend to say. This will let you practise your presentation and assess how it sounds. If you have not prepared in advance, the chances are that, after the interview, you will be left thinking, e.g. “I didn’t get to mention my strengths.”
If an HR officer is present, be prepared for some “softer” and broader questions as they judge whether you’re the right person in relation to the job, the staff and the company. terms of work experience, professional skills and human qualities. Leave out stories about your former boss treating you badly, etc. Or that because of the heavy workload and poor working environment you were off sick for a prolonged period.
A little bit about your personal life:
All of this may well be true and be a part of your background, but keep your eyes on the goal. Talk about your qualifications for this job. You don’t want your prospective future boss to sit there thinking, “I don’t want him/her talking like that about me some day!”
Work experience
After your presentation, the company will usually ask you some questions.
Use the template below for your preparations • Age, marital status, where you live
• Your education and training • Which companies have you worked for?
Your qualifications for this job
• Professional qualifications for the job • Personal qualities in relation to job When you talk about yourself and your background, talk about the positives in
Well....
If you are only being interviewed by a department head, the questions will largely be work-related (e.g. “How many years’ experience do you have in a particular area?”, “How long did your previous job last?”) and about whether you have experience with particular types of work.
Questions to expect from an HR officer:
• Who are you? • What are your strengths/ weaknesses? • Would you mind taking a test? • Were you sacked from your last job? Why? • What do you understand by a good working relationship? • What do you think of your current boss? • What would your former colleagues say about you? • How is your financial situation? • How many sick days have you had in the last year? • Are you willing to take further training? • What do you do in your spare time? We recommend that you prepare your answers to these questions in advance. If you are asked an uncomfortable question, it’s best to avoid having to think of an answer during the actual interview. You risk being unable to explain yourself properly. You don’t want to walk away thinking that you didn’t make the right impression.

PRESENT FOR THE FUTURE Becoming a DBS Management Associate (MA) opened up a world of opportunities for Daryl Tan Yan Liang who graduated from Nanyang Technological University with a double degree in Business and Accountancy. The highly sought after two-year leadership programme offers the brightest and most promising candidates the opportunity to fast track their careers and develop the fundamental skills that will prepare them to lead the way forward in banking. Selected candidates will get to embark on an accelerated learning programme and undergo on-the-job training and mentorship. “I was able to utilise all the skills that I had gained during the training on my first rotation and that allowed me to get up to speed quickly across different teams,” said Daryl. “I was also sent to Hong Kong to get some regional exposure to the business.” Having just completed a seven-month stint in Group Audit team where he participated in nine audit projects across different businesses and geographies, this MA from the 2012 batch can still vividly recall his Management Internship days in the Bank in 2011. "We were continually evaluated throughout the 10-week internship period," said Daryl. "We were also assigned a MA buddy and the interaction with my buddy gave me insights into the MA Programme, which inspired me to be one.” The Management Internship programme includes networking sessions with senior management, leadership training sessions, a cross-departmental project and evaluation. Currently, Daryl is with the Global Transaction Services Cash Channels team, where he is involved in shaping the Bank’s corporate internet banking platform. When asked for his advice to aspiring MAs, Daryl quotes the Institutional Banking Group’s Chief Operating Officer, Lim Him Chuan: “He said that to be a leader, we must first be able to lead ourselves and to try our best to follow the 5Ls - Listen, Learn, Link up with others, Leverage on strengths and last but not least, Laugh and have fun in the process. It’s simple, effective, and inspirational.” Begin your career with DBS and let the Management Associate Programme put you in the forefront of change in banking. Visit dbs.com/careers

TYPES OF INTERVIEWS
In this article, we will touch on 3 interview types that are becoming an integral part of the job application process. PHONE INTERVIEWS Phone interviews are usually the first step of the grueling interview process, and while it may often seem like a casual ‘get to know you’ conversation, the phone interview is hardly something to be taken lightly. Most employers use phone interviews as a way of deciding if arranging a face-to-face interview with a candidate is worth their time. It is therefore crucial that any serious job applicant make use of the phone conversation to “sell” themselves well.
Preparation
With the interview being conducted over the phone, applicants have the advantage of being able to be interviewed from the comfort of their homes. Applicants should capitalise on this advantage by having research materials readily available for reference during the interview. Applicants should also make an effort to ensure that no disturbances or possible disruptions occur during the interview. Having the interview disrupted by a ‘dead’ phone battery or a noisy background is not something that would leave a good impression. While body language is not something that is visible over the phone, it can have a big influence over the way you sound. Thus something as simple as sitting up straight, talking with a smile or dressing up for the interview can make a difference.
During
As interviewers are not able to see you, it is important that you sound interested and enthusiastic over the phone. Sounding bored or unfocused is a surefire way of getting disqualified from a follow-up interview. It is also often forgotten that it is still a formal interview and as a result, many candidates end up coming across as too casual. Therefore, candidates should remember to be cordial and address the interviewer by his or her title unless told to do otherwise. Taking toilet breaks during the interview is another thing that interviewees should avoid.
Closing
Before hanging up, thank the interviewer and find out when you will hear from the company again, or when a face-to-face interview can or will be scheduled. This will save you the agony of nervously waiting by the phone all day for news on your application.
PANEL INTERVIEWS Though still relatively less popular among companies, panel interviews are slowly gaining favour among employers who are looking to get a more unbiased decision in the candidate selection process. The interviewee is usually interviewed by a panel consisting of 2-8 employees of various roles and departments that the candidate is likely to work with if they were to be offered the job.
personalities, so it is important that the candidate builds rapport and makes eye contact with every member on the panel. Many interviewees make the common mistake of assuming one member of the panel as playing the biggest role in the selection process, which often results in them not connecting with the whole panel. Unless you are entirely sure of each panel member’s role in the process, you should pay equal attention to each interviewer.
Preparation
Closing
Before the interview, interviewees should take time to find out about the members on the interview panel. Doing some research would not only allow you to direct questions to the appropriate people, but will show the panel that you have taken the time to do your research. Professional networking sites like LinkedIn may also help you to know more about their backgrounds and how they look like. Like a traditional interview, interviewees should prepare answers to questions that are likely to be asked during the interview, which will leave less room for suprises and awkward pauses.
During
Apart from the candidate’s competencies, the panel is also looking to see how well a candidate interacts with people of various communication styles and
CASE STUDY INTERVIEWS Considered one of the toughest and most mentally draining interviews used by organizations, ample preparation and practice is often required to handle case study interviews. During the interview, interviewees are usually required to take on a variety of case study questions consisting of business problems, brainteasers and logical puzzles, forcing interviewees to put their analytical and problem solving skills on full display.
Preparation
Most of the questions asked during the interview require the interviewee to possess knowledge on the industry and the company, so interviewees should spend time studying and doing thorough researching on the topics relevant. As interviewers are not only looking to get a good gauge of your problem solving skills, but also your ability to structure and present your answers and information, practising with someone who is able to give a fair critique of your answers could be greatly beneficial for the interviewee. There are also case study practice questions and resources easily available that interviewees could take reference from.
Making your last impression count stands true here. Before the end of the interview, the interviewees are usually asked if they have anything to add, this is where interviewees should ask questions. Many interviewers judge interviewees based on the questions asked, so do try to ask intelligent questions that show you have indepth understanding or interest in the company. Before leaving, make sure you shake the hand of every panel member and thank them individually.
Follow-Up
After the interview, interviewees should send out personalized thank you notes or emails to each panel member as soon as possible. Interviewees should take this as an opportunity to improve on any replies or points that may have been discussed during the interview.
During
Interviewers are interested in understanding how you arrived to your answer. Sometimes the process itself is more important than the answer. Therefore, “thinking out loud” will help the interviewer get a good understanding of your analytical skills and thought process. Most of the questions asked do not have just one “right” answer. As long as the deriving of your answer is practical and logical, do not be afraid to be creative.
Closing
The closing and follow up is no different from a standard face-to-face interview. Interviewees should shake the interviewer’s hand and thank them. Interviewees should send out a thank you note or email to the interviewer thereafter, stating briefly your unwavering interest to the job opening.

Source: Graduate Employment Survey conducted by SMU
Source of all data: The Ministry of Education, Singapore
Additional Notes: # MOE has taken all reasonable steps to ensure the accuracy of the data but will not be liable for any inaccuracies. Students should make use of the data at their own discretion. 1. 1. Employment rate refers to the proportion of economically active graduates (i.e. graduates who have entered the labour market) who were employed as at 1 Nov 2012, approximately 6 months after completing their final examinations. 2. Overall employment includes full-time and part-time/temporary employment. 3. Full-time permanent employment refers to employment of at least 35 hours a week and where the employment is not temporary. It includes those on contracts of one year or more. 4. Gross monthly salary pertains only to full-time permanently employed graduates. It refers to the sum of basic salary, overtime payments, commissions, allowances and other regular cash payments before deduction of employee CPF contributions and personal income tax. However, it excludes employer CPF contributions, bonuses, stock options, lump sum payments, and payments-in-kind. 5. National Institute of Education (NIE) is an autonomous institute of NTU. 6. Data on law, medical, pharmacy and architecture graduates are obtained from a follow-up survey on 2011 graduates after they have completed their 1-year practical law course/ pupilage or serve housemanship. 7. Data on Biomedical Sciences—Traditional Chinese Medicine are obtained from a follow-up survey on 2011 graduates after they have completed their practical training. 8. SMU’s courses are direct 4-yr programmes and graduates could be awarded Cum Laude and above, Merit, High Merit or no awards. The data for SMU’s courses above is displayed in 2 categories: (i) overall results for all graduates within the course regardless of the award they attained, and (ii) results for the graduates awarded Cum Laude and above. Should the graduates undertake more than 1 Degree (e.g. Dual Degree programme), they have been classified based on the first Degree. **: No data is shown due to the small number/proportion of respondents. Frequently Asked Question: What is the difference between mean and median salaries? The Mean monthly salary is an average of the salaries of the full-time permanently employed graduates. The Median monthly salary is the salary of the ‘central’ (i.e. 50th Percentile) graduate in the set of full-time permanently employed graduates when they are arranged in a sequential order by salary. It is useful to refer to these 2 indicators together. The median is a useful reference when the salary data is not evenly distributed (e.g. when the group contains graduates with exceptionally low or high salaries, especially when the number of respondents is relatively small). For example, although the median gross monthly salary for the Business Management course offered by SMU shows that 50% of the graduates are earning $3,020 or less, the mean gross monthly salary is about $3,369. This indicates that there are some high earners who have raised the mean salary. In contrast, the mean gross monthly salary of Social Sciences graduates is relatively 2013 29 similar to the median gross monthly salary. This indicates that salaries are more evenly distributed on both sides of the median for this group of graduates.
