Noses pressed against the window, Clyde, Sadie, Dee, and Boo stared at the melting snow. Spring had arrived...and not a moment too soon! Sleeping in their cardboard box had been warm and cozy during the long winter months, but adventures in their box were much more fun! Winter meant hibernation; spring meant escapades! Giddy with excitement, the four bears stretched their muscles after a long winter’s nap.

Big brother Clyde spoke first, “We’ve waited months to get back in our magic box, so where do we want to go?” “Let’s imagine it’s a hot air balloon and fly back to the island where it’s warm and sunny,” squealed Sadie.

“Yes!” Dee chimed in, “Remember the man in the red shirt who waved to us as we flew over last year? Maybe we’ll see him again.”

6

Boo jumped up and down, “Back to the beach! Back to the beach! To meet the man in the red shirt. I dreamed about him all winter. Let’s go.”

7

8

As quickly as their little legs would carry them, the bears scampered to the garage and clambered aboard their box as Clyde shouted commands.

9

10

“One in each corner to balance it out. We don’t want to tip over!” Finding their positions, they hung on tight as they left solid ground.

11

Up, up and away, they soared through the vast blue skies and the white puffy clouds. The ocean below sparkled like diamonds. From their perch high in the sky, the four bears scanned the horizon. Sadie broke the silence, pointing as she shouted, “There’s the island, right there! We can make a soft landing in the sand!”

12

13

14

When they landed and tumbled out of their hot air balloon onto the beach, they were nose-to-nose with a totally unexpected sight!

15

What kind of creature was this, walking sideways on ten legs? Eyeball to eyeball, Clyde blinked and then asked, “Who are you? You look nothing like us.” The creature blinked back and introduced himself, “I’m King Crab, but you can call me King.”

16

“Hi, King! I’m Clyde. This is Sadie, Dee, and Boo. We have so many questions! Why are your eyes on top of your body?” “Stalks hold my eyes up high so I can see all around me as I walk side to side.”

“You have so many legs,” Dee exclaimed, “I count ten, but the front pair look funny. Why are they different?”

17

Focused on King, the bears didn’t hear a small voice call out, HELP! Holding his front legs up as high as he could, King answered, “My front pair are pincers or some call them claws. I can use them like scissors or chopsticks. I can help my sea friends if they’re caught in a net. I can free them from plastic and other floating dangers.” “Please...help me,” this time they all heard the small, scared voice.

18

“Step aside,” yelled King, “Give us some breathing room!” The bears backed away quickly. Clicking his claws together with a flourish, King Crab cut the net. “TA DA!” he said as he spun around. Eyes wide, the four bears stared as another funny creature emerged from the shreds. “Oh, THANK YOU, King Crab, you’ve saved me again.” “My pleasure, Miss Lovey, but you really need to be more careful. Look at you, all covered in kelp.”

19

Wiping the kelp away, Boo discovered a shell underneath. “Wow! You have your own armor!”

20

“I do,” Lovey Turtle smiled shyly, “my shell makes it possible for me to live 50-100 years, and it protects me when I travel thousands of miles in the ocean looking for food.” The bears danced a jig to celebrate Lovey Turtle’s rescue. HIP HIP, HOORAY! HIP HIP, HOORAY!

21

Clyde lifted his hand to stop all the commotion. “We’re here on a mission, let’s not forget.” He locked eyes with King, “Once upon a time, we flew over this island and saw a man in a red shirt. Do you know him?”

22

King’s smile was so big that it covered his face, “Giggle-in!” he responded, “a friend to us all no matter how different we are. He applauds our uniqueness. He’s gentle, he’s kind, and even when we mess up, which we all sometimes do, he loves and forgives us.”

23

“That’s my kind of friend,” Boo exclaimed, “Let’s go find him!” King Crab’s ten legs scurried over to Boo, “He’s gone,” King said sadly, “rescued two days ago. A ship found our island and took him away. He hated to leave us, but couldn’t wait to get back to his mother.” As Boo started to cry, Clyde held him close, “We’ll search ‘til we find him, little brother, don’t cry. In our brown cardboard box, we’ll become castaways. Just imagine the places we’ll go!” Tickling him to get a smile, Dee added, “Faraway places like Bangkok (tickle), Paris (tickle), Perth (tickle), and Zimbabwe! We’ll have so much fun!”

24

25

“And even though we didn’t find Giggle-in, we found new friends in Lovey and King,” Clyde reminded him. “We might be different, but that’s what makes our friendship so exciting. We can learn from each other. Then with a wink and a grin, he teased, “And if we ever get caught in a net, King will be there to save the day!” Beaming through his tears, Boo picked up Lovey and held her close.

26

Clyde bent down, scooped up King Crab and placed him on his shoulder.

27

The bears linked arms as they strolled back to their balloon and into the sunset, planning their next adventure and wondering where in this great big world it would take them.

Yes, there was plenty of travelin’ still left to do! This wasn’t the end. And someday, somewhere, they would find Giggle-in!
