Chapter 1

The Beach The moment Kaitlyn woke up, she jumped out of bed. She was staying with her aunt and cousin Adam for a few weeks over the summer. Kaitlyn had already had an amazing time with them. They ate at her favorite restaurant. She had also met a few of Adam’s friends. They had not been able to go to the beach yet, though, so she was excited for today. “Today is the day,” she whispered as she looked up at the sun streaming through her window. Kaitlyn was excited. She and Adam were going to the beach for a few days and she could hardly wait! The beach was her favorite place to spend time. She loved body surfing and building sandcastles. Kaitlyn was eight years old, with bright blue eyes and blonde hair that fell to her shoulders. Adam was thirteen years old with short brown hair and equally blue eyes. Her aunt stepped into her room. “Have you packed to go to the beach today?” she asked. “If not, you can pack after breakfast. We’ll leave when Adam gets back from soccer practice.” Kaitlyn was almost too excited to eat, but she knew it would be a while until they ate lunch. She still had several things to pack for their trip, so she quickly ran to the kitchen and poured a bowl of cereal. 9

When Adam got home, he rushed inside, yelling, “YAY! Who’s ready to go to the beach?” Adam started doing surfing moves around the living room. Kaitlyn joined him and started laughing as she watched her cousin.

10

“Wow! You guys are really excited,” said her aunt. She was packing drinks and snacks. When she was finished, Adam and Kaitlyn raced to put their things in the car and get their seats. They couldn’t wait to jump the waves! If they were able to get there early enough, her aunt said she might be able to enjoy the beach before bedtime. Adam and Kaitlyn began playing a game to help the time go by faster. Unfortunately, they ran into some traffic and traffic was moving very slow. Kaitlyn was watching outside her window for palm trees. She knew when the trees began to change to palm trees; they were almost to their beach house. Kaitlyn and Adam decided to watch a movie to make the time fly faster. After a few hours of running into even more traffic, a fast-food lunch, and three movies, they had finally made it to the beach. The first thing they did was eat dinner. They pulled into her aunt’s favorite pizza place. It was really good. Next, they rode go-karts! Adam won every race. When they finished racing, they checked into the beach house they were staying in for the week. The house was perfect! It was just a short walk from the beach and had a huge porch on the second story with a view of the entire ocean. After unpacking, they took showers and yawned. They had hoped to go out to the beach before bed, but they were too tired. They had a long day and it was time to rest up for tomorrow.

11

Chapter 2

New World The next day, Kaitlyn and Adam got up and ate bacon and eggs for breakfast. When they finished, they packed for a full day at the beach. When everyone was ready, they all went down to the beach and claimed a spot. Adam and Kaitlyn helped set up a tent and chairs before they started playing. Soon they were all done setting up and ready to get in the water! Adam and Kaitlyn surfed on their boogie boards and Kaitlyn’s aunt even helped them build a giant sandcastle! They had loads of fun together. Then Kaitlyn and Adam decided to go on a walk. “This will be fun!” said Kaitlyn, as she bent down to pick up a partial sand dollar she had just discovered. “Let’s see what we can find!” replied Adam. He, too, was hoping to find a few good seashells. Kaitlyn was walking near the water, searching for dolphins and seashells when she heard someone scream. She looked around and couldn’t find Adam! Where had he gone? “Adam, where are you?” she called. “Down here,” he replied. “Where is ‘here’? I don’t see you!” Kaitlyn said. “Follow my voice.”

12

Kaitlyn searched, then she found the hole where Adam had fallen. It was a huge hole! Adam looked like he was further down than she could reach! “I see you now,” she exclaimed. “I will try to get you out.” “Okay, hurry, it’s creepy down here,” Adam said, trying not to sound scared. Kaitlyn tried to get Adam out, but the hole was too deep, and Adam was too big. When she reached one last time, she lost her balance and fell in with him! “Now we’re both stuck in here,” she moaned. “What are we going to do, Adam?” “ “I don’t know,” Adam replied. Kaitlyn sat down to think when she heard Adam gasp. “Wow!” he said. “Look!” Off in the corner of the hole was a small treasure chest partially open with red and blue jewels. There was a soft glow coming from it. Adam went to open it. Inside the treasure chest below the jewels was a cape and a pair of glasses.

13

As they grabbed the cape and glasses, a loud voice called out to them. “Ye have been chosen to go to Ocracoke Island and help Captain Green-Eyed Pirate and his crew,” the voice boomed. “In a few seconds, ye will be transported to Ocracoke Island and put on Captain Green-Eyed Pirate’s ship. We need ye help to get me crew and me treasure back. Ye will use these gadgets to stop the evil pirates. I suggest ye hold hands because ye will be launched in three, two, one, GO!” Before Adam and Kaitlyn had a chance to link up, they were sprung from a platform and landed right in front of a ghost pirate. The ghost had a black pirate hat on with a brown border around it. Adam and Kaitlyn stood up and brushed themselves off. They both looked around and then at each other. Adam reached out to grab Kaitlyn’s hand. They were wearing the gadgets they found in the treasure chest. Adam was wearing the red cape and Kaitlyn was wearing the green glasses. “Ahoy ye landlubbers-welcome to Ocracoke Island, the land of the pirates,” said the ghost pirate. “Umm, hi,” Adam said, trying to be brave. “Looks like ye have found what I wanted ye to find,” said the ghost pirate. Kaitlyn was right beside Adam, frozen with fear! She had never seen anyone you could look straight through! The ghost pirate looked into Kaitlyn’s eyes and said, “Blimey! What’s wrong, wee one? Ye look as if you’ve seen a ghost!” His whole ghostly body began to shake with laughter. “Me name is Captain Green-Eyed Pirate. Green-Eyed for short!” he continued. “I am so glad ye came. Me crew really needed ye to come. Now follow me, landlubbers!” Adam and Kaitlyn followed Captain Green-Eyed to the Captain’s room inside his ship. “This is me room, so please don’t touch anything,” he said. “I need to show ye this map.” Captain Green-Eyed unrolled the map. As he did, he began to explain why they were here. “Ye see, me crew was captured by enemy pirates — a bunch of scallywags who got mad at me for discovering the secret map of Ocracoke Island. This shows all 14

the secret hiding places on the island and it shows the hideouts for the superheroes. I be needing yer help to rescue me crew and keep the bad pirates from taking over our special island.” “This be my secret map of Ocracoke. I have made ye landlubbers a copy, too,” he said. On the map it listed Mermaid Waters, Green-Eyed’s Gadget Room, Hero Hut and the Ocracoke Lighthouse. Green-Eyed went to get the other copies of the map and said, “Just follow me and ye shall learn more about yer mission!”

Green-Eyed went to the steering wheel and sailed to land. Then he got off and went to a small beach house. It was a yellow one-story house with white shutters. It looked pretty old. The yellow paint was peeling off in places. Kaitlyn was still too stunned to speak. She didn’t know whether to grab Adam and run and hide or to continue to follow this strange ghost pirate. Adam looked over to her and shook his head, “no,” he could tell by the look in her eyes what she was considering. Even if she did run, where would she go? How would they get back to the beach and her aunt? Right now, they just held onto each other and followed the pirate into the house. 15

“This here be the Hero Hut. This is where ye will be staying until the mission is complete!” he explained. “Ye are about to meet some of me mates on the island. These be others with superpowers who will be helping us too. We be needing all the help we can get to get me crew back!” They walked in and Green-Eyed said, “Ahoy, there ye superheroes.” “Hey there, Captain,” said all the superheroes in harmony. Captain Green-Eyed walked to the first one and said, “This be Pink Lantern. She’s good with lights when we need it,” “Cool,” said Adam and Kaitlyn. Green-Eyed went through the superheroes very quickly. “This here be Super Sky. His specialty is controlling the weather. This be Wind Willow. She can control the wind. This here be Super Strike. He’s great at controlling electricity. This be Ant Runner. She’s incredibly fast. And last, but not least, this be TyCon. TyCon has been a trusted superhero since the beginning. One of me first mates, perhaps.” “He looks really cool,” said Adam. “All the superheroes have different powers and they shall be helping ye save me crew and help me get me stolen treasure back from the bad pirates,” said Green-Eyed. “Sweet,” said Adam. “Nice to meet you,” said Kaitlyn with a smile as she finally allowed herself to break free of her death grip on Adam’s hand. The superheroes all seemed so nice. “Nice to meet you guys too,” said all the superheroes. “Now I have a special treat for ye before we start looking for me crew. I will take ye landlubbers to meet the mermaids. I think Kaitlyn will enjoy meeting them. We shall meet back up with the superheroes later.” “Seriously?! I’ve always wanted to meet real mermaids!” Kaitlyn said excitedly.

16

Chapter 3

Mermaid Waters It seemed like they were on the ship for a long time! “Sorry it’s taking so long!” Captain Green-Eyed Pirate said. “I be savin’ up for a new and faster ship, but I don’t have the money. The last of me treasure was taken by that scoundrel Captain Billy One Tooth when he was looking for me map! That is why I need ye help!” “Why do you need us when you have your own superheroes?” asked Adam. “Ye see,” Green Eyed said. “I recently lost one of my most powerful superheroes. His name was Smelly Boots. He was amazing, but now he’s no longer on me crew because he switched over to that scallywag Captains Billy One Tooth and his crew. He’s the most rotten pirate of all. Me treasure and the other pirates on me crew were taken by him. Smelly Boots is so powerful we needed some extra help to defeat the scallywags and get me crew back.” Kaitlyn caught a glimpse of a mermaid tail out of the corner of her eye! “Look over there! It’s a mermaid!” Kaitlyn shouted. Adam ran to the side of the ship where Kaitlyn was standing. “There she is!” he said as he pointed toward the water. They were near a cove and the water was full of mermaids! The water was a deep blue and the cove was in the shape of a heart. 17

18

“Wow!” said Kaitlyn. “They’re incredible!” There were a few mermaids sunbathing and their fins glimmered in the sun. The whole cove was lit up with a combination of colors. As Captain Green-Eyed Pirate lowered the anchor, Kaitlyn saw a mermaid near the boat. Suddenly, the boat was surrounded by mermaids! “Can I say ‘hello’?” asked Kaitlyn. “Let me introduce ye!” Green-Eyed Pirate said. He talked with the mermaid wearing a crown. The mermaid was beautiful and had a pink and purple tail. “Adelle, this here be Kaitlyn and Adam. They’ve come to help me find me crew and me treasure!” “Nice to meet you,” said the mermaids. “You too,” Kaitlyn and Adam said together. “I thought I would bring the kids to meet ye!” Green Eyed said. “Oh, they seem wonderful!” the mermaids sang in their sweet voices. “Let’s make the best of our time,” one of the mermaids said. “We so rarely get to meet new people.” “Jump in,” another said. “I guess it wouldn’t be a be a big problem to go for a short swim,” Kaitlyn said. Kaitlyn was glad she still had on her swimsuit from the beach underneath her clothes. She couldn’t wait to swim with the mermaids! Kaitlyn eagerly jumped in to swim with the mermaids. “Jump in,” she said to Adam. “The water feels great!” Then Adam jumped in with the others. “Wow, it does feel good in here,” he said. “Don’t take too long in there,” Green-Eyed said. “Ye never know when Captain Billy One Tooth will show up. with his crew.” “We won’t,” said Kaitlyn. “I understand,” said Adam. “Why don’t you tell us how you lost your crew,” one of the mermaids asked Green-Eyed. “Okay,” he said. “I was sitting on the beach having a bonfire with me crew. We were watching the peaceful sunset and talking 19

about the latest treasure we found. When we looked back, me good friend, Black Toe, was gone. The boys and I got up and went to go search for him. We decided to split up, so we could search more of the island. After searching for a while, I made me way back to the bonfire, hoping to see me crew waiting for me. I waited up all night, but the rest of me crew never showed up. In the wee hours of the morning, I must have fallen asleep. When I woke up, I found a piece of a map with a knife through it. On the map was the marking of me enemy, Captain’ Billy One Tooth. That scallywag stole not only me crew but also stole me treasure! He really knows how to get on me last nerve.” “Wow…so that’s how you lost your crew?” Kaitlyn asked. Captain Green-Eyed shook his head yes. “That’s not good,” exclaimed Adam. “You should join us in here,” one of the younger mermaids insisted. “Umm… no thanks,” Green Eyed replied. “Please,” Adam and Kaitlyn begged. “I’m not going in there right now. I need to keep a look out!” Green-Eyed said in a stern voice. One of the younger mermaids said, “How can he get in the water if he’s a ghost?” All the older mermaids started laughing contagiously. “Ha-ha, very funny,” Green-Eyed said, rolling his eyes. Kaitlyn started laughing so hard it could be heard all across the cove. Adam joined her and the two of them laughed until their stomachs hurt. When they finally stopped, Adam asked, “I never thought of it that way. Have you ever been able to swim?” “Of course! I just have to wear a special swimsuit for ghosts,” explained Green-Eyed. As Kaitlyn was enjoying time with the mermaids, Green Eyed began to look through his spyglass. He became anxious to leave. “We need to go now, so everyone out of the water!” he said. “Why?” asked Adam. “I’m feeling a shiver down me spine,” Green Eyed said. “I think we might be in danger! We may also put the mermaids in danger!”

20

“How would they find us here?” asked Adam. “No time to explain. Now go get Kaitlyn. Hurry!” Adam went to get Kaitlyn. “Come on, Kaitlyn! We have to go now because Green-Eyed said we may be putting the mermaids in danger!” Adam exclaimed. “Bye, mermaids. Your Lagoon is beautiful!” Kaitlyn said as she took Adam’s hand and began to run down the beach where she was sitting. As they hurried to the ship, Adam told her Captain Green-Eyed saw something through his eyeglass. Captain Billy One Tooth may be close! “Does he have a plan?” Kaitlyn asked. “He said to trust him, but we have to hurry!” said Adam. He was talking so fast he barely took time to breathe. The two of them ran up the gangplank just in time! Coming fast toward their ship was another boat. They saw cannons peering up from the poop deck on the boat. The boat was larger than their ship and it was flying straight toward them! As Kaitlyn’s foot left the gangplank, their ship was already starting to move away from the shore. Captain Green-Eyed had already pulled the anchor up and he was preparing to make his escape. They didn’t have much time! The mermaids began throwing seashells at the approaching ship, hoping to distract Captain Billy One Tooth so they could get away!

21

Chapter 4

The Escape “This is what I was talkin’ about,” Green-Eyed said. “Captain’ Billy One Tooth and his crew found us and now we are trapped!” Green-Eyed’s face looked intense and his voice sounded a bit panicky. Adam and Kaitlyn were just watching the flying ship following them. It was much larger than their ship. The two of them had many questions, but they felt it wasn’t the time to ask them. They were too busy holding on tight to the side of the ship. Adam and Kaitlyn were struggling to keep all their questions to themselves for now. The two of them also tried to ignore all the frightening sounds coming from Captain Billy One Tooth’s flying pirate ship, especially when his ship started shooting cannons at their ship. “Well, shiver me timbers! So that’s how ye want to play?” Captain Green-Eyed shouted. “Adam, run over to the poop deck and fire up me cannon! Me cannon may be little match for theirs, but we won’t get boarded without a fight!”

22

Kaitlyn and Adam didn’t know what Green-Eyed’s plan was if his cannon didn’t work, but fortunately, he had one. “I need to call me heroes, the ones ye landlubbers met earlier!” he shouted from the wheel. “But how will you call them if you have no phone to call them with?” Adam asked. Kaitlyn thought Adam’s question made perfect sense. “Hmm…” Green-Eyed muttered. “Kaitlyn, why don’t you light fireworks. We can signal with those that we need help.” “Great idea!” Kaitlyn said. “There are fireworks in the storage area under me captain’s room.” Kaitlyn ran as fast as she could under the deck to search. Once she found the fireworks, Adam helped Kaitlyn light them.

23

The ship rocked back and forth as Captain Green-Eyed struggled to shake the bad pirates and keep from being hit by their cannons which made lighting the fireworks hard. Finally, the box lit up and Adam and Kaitlyn ran to hide behind the galley. “Three, two, one… blast off!” they shouted as the fireworks exploded in the sky. A few moments later, the superheroes showed up in their superhero outfits. Kaitlyn and Adam were surprised by how fast they arrived! Green-Eyed held tight to the wheel and cheered on the superheroes. The heroes blocked the back of the ship. Captain Green-Eyed Pirate was trying to keep the ship out of harm’s way, so the cannons wouldn’t hit the ship. The heroes’ outfits were all different colors. They all were able to avoid the bombs and cannons with their abilities. Captain’ Billy One Tooth and his crew did not give up easily. They kept on fighting, hoping the superheroes would give up, but the superheroes would never give up! Soon, Kaitlyn, Adam, and Captain Green-Eyed Pirate started getting worried because they realized the heroes were getting tired, but Pink Lantern had an idea. She pulled out a booster rocket and put it on the pirate ship. Pink Lantern shouted, “Hang on!” When it ignited, they were launched many miles from the action. They were able to escape! Captain’ Billy One Tooth and his crew couldn’t even see their ship anymore because of how fast the booster made their ship go. A few minutes later, the pirate ship stopped. “What was that?” asked Kaitlyn, trying to pull herself together after barely being able to hold onto the flag pole as the ship took off. “That was a really powerful booster the heroes put on me ship,” Green-Eyed explained. “That was awesome!” said Adam. “I have to show ye landlubbers something before we go to sleep,” Green-Eyed said. The heroes said good-bye and Captain Green-Eyed Pirate sailed his ship to land. Once they landed, he placed his anchor 24

in the water and hopped out, followed by Adam and Kaitlyn. They started walking toward a grove of trees. Adam and Kaitlyn were wondering what Green-Eyed was going to show them. On the other side of the woods, they found themselves in a clearing. They noticed several holes in the ground. In the distance, they saw a strange-looking building. “This is the place,” Green-Eyed said.

25

Chapter 5

The Secret Hideout The building was large, with hardly any windows. “What is this place?” Kaitlyn asked. “Ye are about to find out,” Green Eyed said. They all started walking into the building. Inside there were pink lanterns hanging across the building to light it. They all stood in a spacious room with white tables along the wall. On each table were bins filled with superhero gadgets. In the far corner was a full superhero costume in a glass case. “Woah!” Kaitlyn screamed. “Pretty amazing, isn’t it?” Green-Eyed exclaimed. “Yeah,” said Adam. “This be me secret hideout! This is the place I will turn ye from normal landlubbers to extraordinary superheroes!” Adam and Kaitlyn couldn’t believe what they’d just heard. “This is where ye will get all yer gear activated. I bought this place for me superheroes. This is where I got yer cape and glasses. Here I shall activate yer gadgets and ye shall be heroes too,” Green Eyed said. “What do our gadgets do?” Adam and Kaitlyn asked. “I will show ye landlubbers how to use them later. For right now, ye shall each get a hero phone. If yer ever in trouble, all ye have to do is press the green button,” Captain Green-Eyed Pirate said. 26

“Wow! I can’t wait to try everything out!” said Adam. Adam was so excited! Captain Green-Eyed Pirate went to go get their phones and started activating their gadgets with a sensor. “I can’t wait to use my glasses!” said Kaitlyn. “Same! I’m going to be a real superhero!” Adam exclaimed. “Aye. It’s a big treat to have gadgets,” Green Eyed happily replied. A few minutes later, Adam, Kaitlyn, and Green-Eyed all heard a big BOOM, BAM, CRASH! 27

“What’s that?” Kaitlyn and Adam asked at the same time. “OH NOOO,” Green Eyed said. “What?” Adam and Kaitlyn said, sounding worried. “It’s Captain’ Billy One Tooth! He must have been able to follow us. I bet me old mate, Smelly Boots, led them here. He would have known where we be going,” exclaimed Green-Eyed. “OH NOO!” shouted Adam and Kaitlyn in unison. “At least yer gadgets work,” Green-Eyed said as he handed Adam and Kaitlyn their gadgets. They still didn’t know how to properly use them, but it would be a last resort if they got into any trouble. “If ye get lost, you have yer hero phone with ye. Remember, press the green button,” he continued. “Let’s do this thing.” Adam sounded ready. The three of them heard footsteps getting closer and closer. “I got ye now!” shouted a voice. Kaitlyn screamed in a high-pitched voice. Captain GreenEyed quickly put his ghostly hand over her mouth to quieten the sound. “Shhh… quiet. They will hear us, so don’t talk so loudly,” whispered Captain Green-Eyed Pirate. Once Kaitlyn calmed down, he took his hand off her mouth. They followed Green-Eyed in silence. He was moving fast, and their sides hurt from running. It sounded like the footsteps were gaining on them. They didn’t dare look back but ran even faster. Soon Green-Eyed stopped, pointed to a hole and told them to jump. They didn’t have time to think, so they jumped and braced for the impact. To their surprise, they fell on sand. Green-Eyed flew down inside the hole and led them to a tunnel. The soft glow coming from the pirate as they made their escape lighted their path. Adam and Kaitlyn were so glad they didn’t get caught. They talked about it as Green Eyed led them to their ship. “Where are we going?” Kaitlyn asked Green-Eyed as they boarded the ship. “We are going to the Ocracoke Lighthouse. I know a secret passageway out of this cove.” Green-Eyed said. “I’ve always wanted to see a real lighthouse!” Kaitlyn said. 28

Adam wondered why they were going to a lighthouse this late at night. “Why are we going to some silly old lighthouse?” Adam asked “Well, this lighthouse is not silly, but it is old. We are going so we can track Captain’ Billy One Tooth and his crew from the top. The lighthouse is really high up, so it shall be easier to spot them.” “How high?” they asked. “It’s 77 feet and 5 inches,” Green-Eyed replied. “Cool!” said Adam. “Sounds AWESOME!” said Kaitlyn. “The only problem is, ye shall need to walk to the top! There are only 86 stairs ye landlubbers need to go up!” Green-Eyed said. “Eighty-Six!” Adam and Kaitlyn said in unison. They finally got to the big, white lighthouse. “Land ho,” Green Eyed whispered, not trying to be very loud. They got out of the ship and cautiously made their way to the lighthouse. It was beautiful at night, all lit up. The lighthouse was no longer manned, but the beacon still lit the way for many sailors on the ocean.

29

Chapter 6

The Ocracoke Lighthouse The steps to the top of the lighthouse seemed to go up forever! Adam was starving, and both Adam and Kaitlyn were getting tired. It was past midnight. Getting to the top took little effort for Green Eyed as all he had to do was glide up the steps. Green-Eyed brought them to the top of the lighthouse then took out his spyglass to look around. “I’m so tired,” Kaitlyn complained as she sat down and leaned against the wall. “Me too,” Adam agreed. Fortunately, he had a pack of crackers in his pocket from earlier in the day when they were going to collect seashells. He divided them and gave some to Kaitlyn. “Stop complaining and enjoy the view,” Green Eyed said as he pointed out to the ocean. It looked as if there were a million stars. “I’ve never seen anything like it!” said Adam in surprise. Green-Eyed was looking around for Captain’ Billy One Tooth while Adam and Kaitlyn were enjoying their crackers and the view. “Any sign of them?” Adam asked. 30

31

“Not yet, matey!” Green-Eyed replied. Kaitlyn was gazing out the window at the stars when she saw something near a grove of trees close by. She was so tired she thought she had imagined it! She pushed the button to activate her glasses which allowed her to see through objects. Captain Green-Eyed told her how to use the button on her glasses while they were going up the stairs. As Kaitlyn looked at the grove of trees, she saw it again, holding a flashlight behind a tree were several of Captain Billy One Tooth’s men. She grabbed Adam’s arm and said, “Adam, they found us!” “How will we escape?” Adam asked. “Yes, how will we? We are very high up and there is no way we can get down the stairs in time!” Kaitlyn cried. “Avast!” Captain Green-Eyed Pirate shouted. “Stop ye bellyaching while I get a plan! Ain’t no one going to Davy Jones locker on my watch!” Green-Eyed looked around the lighthouse, then he turned to Kaitlyn and Adam and said, “Do ye trust me? Adam, remember ye cape is activated!” They hesitantly looked at each other and nodded, then Green-Eyed whispered, “Run toward the window and jump.” Green-Eyed chucked a big, heavy knife through the glass. The window shattered! Adam kicked out the rest of the glass and without looking down, they jumped! Kaitlyn wanted to scream, but didn’t want the bad pirates to see her. Green-Eyed flew out of the window, caught Kaitlyn, and grabbed Adam’s hand. Adam realized he was able to fly beside Captain’ Green Eyed! His cape worked! “Over there!” one of the bad pirates from Captain’ Billy One Tooth’s crew shouted. Green-Eyed and Adam flew Kaitlyn to the ground and they ran onto the ship. “That was close,” Kaitlyn said. “That’s it,” Adam said, sounding kind of mad. “We could have been captured! How are we going to ever save your crew if they catch us?” “He does have a point,” Green Eyed exclaimed as he steered his ship. 32

Just behind the galley, one of Captain’ Billy One Tooth’s shipmates was hiding, waiting for an opportunity to take the kids. With all the excitement, Kaitlyn realized she was still very hungry. She decided to see if there was anything to eat in the galley. As she got closer, she saw movement out of the corner of her eye. “GOTCHA!” screeched a voice. “HAHAHA! Ahoy ye scallywags!” The bad pirate they called Poopdeck Pete, looking more dead than alive, grabbed Kaitlyn then held her tightly to make certain she couldn’t escape. Kaitlyn started kicking her feet, trying to get away, but the Poopdeck Pete was too strong. “Give her back!” Green-Eyed shouted as he and Adam ran after them. “HAHAHA,” said the man. “If ye can find me, ye shall have her back! Until then…” Then he threw a weighted fishing net on Adam so he couldn’t fly after him. “Noooooo!” Adam shouted as he tried to wiggle free of the net. Captain Green-Eyed Pirate came over to help Adam, but it took too long to get Adam free of the net. Poopdeck Pete activated booster rockets on his pirate boots and flew off with Kaitlyn toward the woods. Tears streamed down Adam’s face as he searched for Kaitlyn once he was free. “How will we find her?” he sniffled. “We need to find out where he went and we need to do it fast,” replied Green-Eyed Kaitlyn was quiet as she looked at the place she was being held captive. Around the chair she was tied to was a desk that had Billy One Tooth marked into the wood. She saw his symbol traced around the desk. The symbol was purple and dark blue. It was an upside-down triangle with a crashing wave in the middle. Above that was lightning striking the atmosphere. She was scared. She didn’t know what they were going to do to her. She had to find a way out and quickly! “Ha ha!” said the bad pirates. She could hear Poopdeck Pete above the others as he shared how he slipped onto Captain Green-eyed Pirate’s ship and captured her. 33

There were so many pirates on One Tooth’s ship! Kaitlyn heard the doorknob click. The heavy door creaked as it opened. Kaitlyn’s heart had never beat so fast. Two pirates walked in and sat next to her at Captain Billy One Tooth’s desk. They both looked like they had not taken a bath in years. Kaitlyn wanted to hold her nose because the smell was so bad, but her hands were still tied. One of the pirates got right in Kaitlyn’s face and said, “I just want to tell ye tomorrow ye be going to walk the plank because ye be helping Captain Green-Eyed Pirate!” One Tooth walked in and looked at the pirates around Kaitlyn and said to the one on her right, “Ye be going too! Ye don’t do anything I ask and I see a lack of effort in yer work!” “Now, away with ye!” One Tooth said to the pirates at her desk. As the pirates scrambled out the door, Kaitlyn tried not to panic at the thought of being left alone with One Tooth. Then the captain looked over at Kaitlyn, “And yes, you be goin’ with him!” Kaitlyn tried not to be scared, but she had spotted a shark in the water earlier today from Captain Green-Eyed’s ship. “JAIL CREW!” the captain shouted. In came two pirates. One of the pirates picked Kaitlyn up and brought her out of the room, across the ship, and into a jail cell. “NO!” she shouted at the pirate carrying her. She kicked as hard as she could, trying to break free. “I’m just doing my job, ma’am,” he replied.

34

Chapter 7

A Day to Remember Kaitlyn spent the night trying to find a loose board or bar to make an escape. The sun came up too quickly. She knew Adam wouldn’t give up on finding her. She just had to be brave. “Ahoy!” said Captain Billy One Tooth as he walked into the jail room. He unlocked all of their jail cells and brought them to the upper deck. There were three planks just in front of them. One for Kaitlyn, one for each of the two pirates who were in the jail cells beside her. One of the pirates was the one who spoke to Kaitlyn in One Tooth’s office yesterday. Her palms began to get sweaty. “First,” One Tooth said to the audience of pirates who were watching them, “we have two young pirates who have caused me much grief. They won’t finish anything me gives them to do. Let this be an example to ye all that when One Tooth tells ye to swab the deck, ye do it! Boys, walk the plank!” All the pirates lifted their fists and yelled, “ARRRGH!” A pirate took each by the arm and forced them onto the plank. They begged for another chance. They said they would never do it again. The pirates continued to push them further down the plank until there was no plank left. In an instant, they were gone.

35

Kaitlyn heard the splashes as they hit the water. She needed to think of something quickly. She was next. “Of course,” she thought, “My hero phone.” She checked her pockets, but it must have slipped out! “Next up, we have here a little girl who became friends with our greatest enemy, Captain GreenEyed Pirate! She shall walk the plank to prove it be important who ye friends are! ARRGH, walk the plank ye scallywag!”

36

He kicked her off and she was in the air. Just before she hit the water, Adam flew beneath her and caught her. She fell into his arms. Adam flew her to Green-Eyed’s ship. “You came!” she cried. “I would hate to see you become shark food!” he exclaimed. Green-Eyed was there too. “I thought I would never see you again,” said Kaitlyn as she gave Adam a big hug. “Now, let’s get out of here,” Green-Eyed replied. The other pirates were looking overboard, trying to figure out where Kaitlyn went since they heard no splash. Suddenly, one of them saw Green-Eyed’s ship afloat in the air and pointed it out to the other bad pirates. They pulled up the anchor and began to pursue Green Eyed’s ship. Green-Eyed ducked behind a waterfall and landed the boat in the water. He took Adam and Kaitlyn to a cave close by and told them it was a secret hideout. The hideout was the most hightech cave they had ever seen. All the computers were running on solar energy. One man got up from his desk and welcomed them to the hideout. His name was Black Bart. Black Bart asked Kaitlyn if she was ready to learn all her special glasses could do. She said, “Yes!” She couldn’t wait to see what other special powers her glasses would give her. 37

It had been an exciting few days. Now if they could just finish their mission, they could go home. Kaitlyn knew her aunt and parents would be worried.

38

Chapter 8

Into Action “First,” said Captain Green-Eyed Pirate, “put your glasses on.” Kaitlyn put her glasses on. “Yer glasses were designed to help you see very far away and to see through objects. They can also shoot lasers, he exclaimed. Ye have to recharge every time you run out of power. This means when you feel like the glasses are not as powerful or you see the lasers getting slower or weaker, you will need to power them down so they can recharge. They use solar energy to recharge so you can charge them anywhere. Don’t ye worry the charge lasts a long time.” “That sounds so cool!” Kaitlyn said. “I wish I had known how to use the lasers when I was on One Tooth’s ship.” “To activate yer lasers, hold the grey button on the side for 2 seconds. This also deactivates the glasses,” Green-Eyed continued. “Okay,” Kaitlyn said. “Go ahead and try activating it.” Green-Eyed said. Kaitlyn pressed the side button on the glasses for 2 seconds, just like Green-Eyed had instructed. “How do I shoot lasers?” she asked. “Ye have to think about yer target, then it will shoot,” he replied.

39

Captain Green-Eyed Pirate grabbed a punching bag from a nearby closet. Kaitlyn concentrated on the punching bag and all of a sudden, a zoop sound was made from the glasses. The laser that came from the glasses shot right onto the middle of the punching bag.

40

“Wow!” Kaitlyn said in disbelief. “Great job!” Green-Eyed was very proud. “Ye can also activate an invincibility shield for up to three minutes if you have your mind set on it. Just believe ye will turn invincible and ye shall.” “So, no one can hurt me if I get into a battle for up to 3 minutes? Way cool! That is just enough time to get away!” Kaitlyn replied. For the next few hours, Kaitlyn and Green-Eyed worked on shooting at targets. When they were finished, they went to find Adam. They found Adam at the superhero hideout. Kaitlyn and Green-Eyed saw Adam in front of a card table playing cards. Adam was playing against Wind Willow. “I win!” said Adam playing his last card. Green-Eyed interrupted Adam and said, “What are ye up to?” “Just playing some cards,” Adam replied. “He’s won every time!” TyCon said. “Isn’t that interesting? Are you sure he didn’t cheat?” Kaitlyn said. “Ha ha!” Adam replied. “Avast ye bellyaching and let’s get to work!” Green-Eyed shouted. “Well, what ‘work’ are we supposed to do?” Adam and Kaitlyn asked. I’ll tell ye what we shall do!” Green-Eyed said, “We shall find me crew and get me treasure back! We shall show Captain’ Billy One-Tooth he will not win against Captain’ Green-Eyed Pirate once and fer all. Our first step is to depart to Portsmouth Island fer more supplies.” Adam, Kaitlyn, and Green-Eyed set off to Portsmouth Island. “We’re almost there,” Green-Eyed exclaimed. “BOOM” went a familiar sound. “What was that?” Kaitlyn asked. “Oh no! It looks like a storm be a-comin’,” GreenEyed replied. “Rain had been coming our way, but I was not expectin’ it quite this early!” 41

“What are we going to do?” Adam asked. “We’ll batten down the hatches and prepare for some big waves! The storm is too fierce for us to fly this time,” Green-Eyed said. Quickly they began to work on securing the ship. The wind picked up and the waves got bigger. Kaitlyn started to feel seasick. Just when she thought she could not take it anymore, the team of superheroes dashed onto the scene. “Wind Willow, Upper Light, do ye think ye can handle the storm?” Green-Eyed asked. “Absolutely!” they replied. Upper Light flew into the clouds while Wind Willow made tiny bubbles around the rain droplets. Wind Willow used her super-speed to circle the clouds and get them moving in the opposite direction. Meanwhile, Upper Light was flying into the clouds to keep the lightning from hurting anyone. This is why she is called Upper Light. Wind Willow was able to get the storm to move away from them. As the superheroes moved the storm further out into the sea, things began to calm down. “Another close call for us!” Green-Eyed said. “Why don’t ye try to get some sleep? It’s been a long day for ye. There be some beds below deck. I will keep watch and get us to Portsmouth Island.”

42

Chapter 9

The Wake-Up Call The wind calmed down after blowing swiftly for a few hours after midnight. As the sun began to rise, Adam and Kaitlyn leaped from their beds arising to the sound of birds chirping in the fresh sea-salt air. They went back on deck and looked up at the big steering wheel at the helm of the ship and saw Captain Green-Eyed pirate. “Good mornin’!” he said happily. “Good morning,” the kids responded back. “What’s the plan for survival?” Adam asked. “I thought ye landlubbers could help me find a sea route while I try to locate an island. The ship has been acting up and during the storm, we lost a flag. We need to get it fixed!” GreenEyed exclaimed. Adam and Kaitlyn went to the Captain’s room with an old map of the seas surrounding them. “Looks like we’re not even near an island,” Kaitlyn said as the hope in her eyes went away. “Remember, Kaitlyn, this part of the map is uncharted. There may be an island here that hasn’t been discovered yet and added to the map, exclaimed Adam. Kaitlyn was convinced there were no islands near them.”

43

“Land, ho! Come see ye Landlubbers! It’s a miracle! I have spotted an Island only a few hundred feet away. We shall adventure there.” Green-Eyed shouted from the steering wheel. “See Kaitlyn. I told you we might have luck,” Adam said to Kaitlyn. Green-Eyed planted the ship with the anchor and everyone got out. “Doesn’t look like any form of life could be here except for animals,” he said. They walked up a hill and spotted a man with tan clothes and a large straw hat with a wide brim. He was looking at the sun. There didn’t appear to be a village nearby. “Do you know who that is?” Kaitlyn whispered from the corner of her mouth to Green-Eyed. “Not a clue,” he answered. When the man saw Adam, Kaitlyn, and Green-Eyed, he became frightened. “Helhello. Who are y-you?” he stuttered. “Ahoy! We have been searching for a safe place to fix our ship and discovered yer island. We don’t mean to cause any trouble,” exclaimed Green-Eyed. “I’ve never s-seen a re-real gho-ghost before,” he replied. “Well I-“ “Hi. My name’s Adam,” said Adam, interrupting Green-Eyed. “H-hi,” the man said. “We be wondering if ye have any place we could stay and someone who could help me fix me sail?” Green-Eyed said. “Ye-yes. Follow m-me,” the man replied. As the man walked to the village, he introduced himself. “Hi, my name is Russel,” he said. “Nice to meet ye,” Green-Eyed said. When they all got to the village, Adam and Kaitlyn saw many little huts they couldn’t see from the beach area. “This one’s mine,” Russel said. 44

45

Russel’s hut looked like the worst one of them all. His was smaller, tighter, and dirtier. “You can sleep here tonight if you want to,” he said, “I know a man in our village who can fix your sail this afternoon. “Thank ye very much,” Green-Eyed said. “Kids, what do ye say?” “Thank you,” Adam and Kaitlyn said. Russel’s friend got right to work on the sail. He didn’t need their help. Russel gave them a tour of the island until the sun started to go down. Green-Eyed, Adam, and Kaitlyn hadn’t gotten much sleep lately, so they all decided to doze off early. “Good night,” they all said to each other. It wasn’t long until they were all fast asleep. “BEE DOO BEE DOO” was the first sound everyone woke up to. “What’s that?” Adam and Kaitlyn said. “It’s the emergency village alarm!” Russel exclaimed. “What do we do?” Adam and Kaitlyn asked, fear written all over their faces. “Let’s go see what’s going on,” Russel replied. Adam followed Russel outside. He decided to use his cape to fly over the village. It didn’t take him long to discover what was wrong. “Don’t come over here!” he shouted from the sky. “The boy’s flying!” exclaimed Russel, shocked. He had never seen anyone fly before in his entire life. “What’s wrong?” Kaitlyn shouted to Adam. “There is a whole section of the village on fire! Everything is burning down to the ground! It’s coming your way,” he shouted back. “Oh no!” shouted Russel. Russel had grown up in this village. This village was his only home. Kaitlyn hated to see Russel upset. What was she going to do? “What are we going to do?” she asked Adam. Follow me, he said. “Let’s see if we can find the source of the fire.”

46

Adam lifted Kaitlyn into the air. “Now trust me. I am going to drop you into the fire. There is one feature of your glasses you haven’t used yet. When you press the button twice, you will be surrounded by a force field that will keep you safe from the fire,” Adam said. “Are you sure it’s going to work?” Kaitlyn asked. “Very sure. You just have to be brave,” Adam said with certainty, “and don’t forget to push the button twice as you land.” With that, Adam flew Kaitlyn over the fire and dropped her in just outside the fire on a mound of shrubbery. “I won’t be hurt! I won’t be hurt!” Kaitlyn repeated in her head as she pushed the button twice. “Adam! What are you doing?” shouted Green-Eyed from below when he noticed Adam had dropped Kaitlyn from the sky. “Trust me,” he replied. Kaitlyn moved through the fire. To her surprise, the force field protected her. She was fire-resistant. Adrenaline flowed through her body. She knew she could only be in the fire for three minutes. She walked around until… she saw it at the edge of the village. A man with a lighter and containers of TNT. She only got a glance, but she saw he had a strange mask with a long nose on and an Outer Banks NC badge on his tan and white lab coat. He was walking quickly away from the fire. Kaitlyn made her way out of the fire, too, because her force field shield was getting weaker. She was starting to feel the heat from the fire. When she got out of the fire, she ran over to Adam, Green-Eyed, and Russel. She explained everything to them. “We need to catch him,” everyone said. They were too late. When they went to look for him, he had disappeared. No one knew why he would burn down the village. Maybe he was a part of One Tooth’s Crew and he was sending a message to them. They all went to work helping the villagers put out the fire. Adam and Green-Eyed flew to the ocean with buckets, filled them up, and flew them back to release them over the flames. Kaitlyn used her force field to protect her as she used a palm branch to try to beat at the new small fires popping up near 47

Russel’s part of the village. When they finally got the fire out, the villagers were thankful. It would take them a while to rebuild. Russel mentioned they might move to another part of the island. Adam, Kaitlyn, and Green-Eyed agreed it was time to leave. They may have put the village in danger. Russel decided to join them on their mission. He wanted to find the guy who had done this to them. They said their goodbyes and headed to the ship.

48

Chapter 10

The Trip to the Outer Banks “Our first stop is the Outer Banks,” said Green-Eyed as everyone climbed onto the ship. The ship set sail. It was about 48 miles away from where they were to the Outer Banks in North Carolina. Green-Eyed had the superheroes come over and bring supplies to help fix some of the other damage from the storm the day before while the kids and Russel went fishing for lunch. “All fixed,” Ant Runner said a few minutes later. “We are going to head over to the superhero cottage, but if you guys need us again, give us a call,” Pink Lantern said. “We should get there by dawn,” Green-Eyed said with a smile. While Russel took a nap, Green-Eyed put the ship on automatic so he, Kaitlyn, and Adam could try to remember all they knew about the fireman hoping it would give them a clue to go on. “What was he wearing again?” Green-Eyed asked so Adam could get a valid description. Adam was drawing a picture that might look like him.

49

“How many times do I have to tell you? He was wearing a strange mask with a long nose, a lab coat, and a badge on it that read ‘Outer Banks NC,’” Kaitlyn replied. She had answered this question millions of times, it seemed. A few minutes later, Adam had finished drawing him out. “Did this look like him?” he asked. “Kinda,” she answered. “HEY!” shouted an unfamiliar voice. “What was that?” asked Adam. They both looked in the direction of the sound. Off in the distance was another ship. Standing at the ship’s wheel was the man Adam just drew and Kaitlyn had seen in the fire. “That’s him! That’s the man from the fire!” shouted Kaitlyn as she pointed at a different pirate ship. “THESE ARE ME WATERS! GET OUT OF THEM NOW!” continued the fire man. His ship was filled with other pirates and captives. “Adam… Green-Eyed…” Kaitlyn knew this boat looked very familiar. “That’s Captain Billy One Tooth’s boat!” she continued. She remembered seeing some of Billy One Tooth’s prisoners when she was held captive. “Impossible! His boat is supposed to be back over at Portsmouth!” Green-Eyed exclaimed. “It’s supposed to be,” Adam said. When Russel got up from his nap, he asked, “What did I miss?” “A lot of things,” said Kaitlyn looking back over to the other pirate ship. “ARE YE GOING TO LISTEN TO ME, OR AM I GOING TO HAVE TO COME AND GET YE?” the fire man continued. Adam secretly flew over to One Tooth’s boat to make sure it was his. Why was the fire man with Captain Billy One Tooth? Maybe the fire man was Billy One Tooth! Adam flew back to Green-Eyed, Russel, and Kaitlyn to tell them what he thought.

50

51

“Adam’s right,” Kaitlyn said. “It makes sense if the fire man was Captain Billy One Tooth because the fire man had his boat,” she continued. “Take off the mask!” Captain Green-Eyed Pirate shouted. “NEVER WOULD I EVER LISTEN TO YE GREEN-EYED!” the man replied. “He knows me name,” said Green-Eyed. “OF COURSE I KNOW YER NAME! DO YE KNOW WHO I BE?” he continued. “How do you know me name?” Green Eyed was speechless. How did the fire man know his name? Why was he on One Tooth’s boat? “Green-Eyed!” shouted the captives. “AVAST!” That was his crew calling his name! Green-Eyed knew his crew was on the ship! He needed to save them. “DUN DUN DUN DUN!!!!! TYCON IS HERE TO SAVE THE DAY!” shouted TyCon. He had seen that Green-Eyed was in trouble on his hero phone. “Yay!” shouted Kaitlyn. “Wow! Thanks for coming!” Adam said to TyCon. “Yer welcome, Adam,” he said. “HEY! THIS ISN’T A REUNION! Crew, batten down the hatches! Prepare the cannons! WE BE READY TO FIGHT YE!” the fire man shouted. Green-Eyed wasn’t worried since TyCon was here to help them! “Take off the mask!” TyCon yelled as he hovered near the boat. “NEVER!” “Yer either going to take off the mask, or we’re going to board yer ship and take it off ourselves!” shouted TyCon. “Let’s see ye try!” the fire man screeched as the first cannon blasted from his ship and just barely missed Green-Eyed’s ship. TyCon was ready to fight! If the fire man wouldn’t take off the mask and reveal his identity, TyCon would make him take it off. He also wasn’t going to let his friends get hurt.

52

Chapter 11

The Fight TyCon’s suit was armor-plated, and he was wearing hover shoes that slightly lifted him in the air. He was also wearing a blue cape around his shoulders. He wore a pirate hat because Green-Eyed had made him a member of his crew. His armor was red and yellow and TyCon could turn into a tornado and shoot fireballs with his hand. Tycon was ready for the fight. He charged his fireballs and was ready to turn into a mighty tornado. The fire man wasn’t afraid. Tycon didn’t know the fire man had been given a sword with special powers and he was ready to use it. He had a secret weapon Tycon wouldn’t be expecting.” “Ahhhh!” TyCon shouted as he spun over to the fire man in his tornado form. “You won’t win! Give up now and save yer crew!” The fire man would not give up! He got out his pirate sword and pressed the button on the side of it, then something magical happened. The pirate sword turned into a gun and he started shooting ice at TyCon, but TyCon wouldn’t stop spinning. Each shot he fired just missed him. Soon Tycon was shooting fireballs and spinning. The wind was picking up from Tycon’s spinning. The wind was so massive his mask went flying off along with the

53

sword. The fire man fell to the ground gasping for air. His sword landed right in front of Green-Eyed, who had flown over to help. “Well, well, well!” said Green-Eyed. “I have seen this sword before. In fact, I used to have one but gave it to one of me crew members.” He looked into the man’s eyes and realized who it was. “You be Smelly Boots! he continued. When the fire man finally found air, he said, “That’s right! I’m yer abandoned crew member. When I was held captive, Captain Billy One Tooth said I could be set free if I help him stop ye from having yer crew and gold back. Yes. I be Smelly Boots!” said the fire man. “We used to be friends. You be willing to throw all that away to help out me enemy Captain Billy One Tooth?” Captain GreenEyed Pirate asked. “Aye!” Smelly Boots replied. There was a moment of silence. No one said anything. GreenEyed was upset because Smelly Boots betrayed him. Smelly Boots was even using the weapon Green-Eyed had given him as a gift against him. As the sun set, Kaitlyn and Adam came up with a plan to get the rest of the crew and treasure back while Green-Eyed and Smelly Boots were arguing about how unfair it was to GreenEyed that Smelly Boots betrayed him. Green-Eyed was keeping Smelly Boots and Captain Billy One Tooth very distracted. Adam spotted a ladder on the enemy’s ship. They must have forgotten to pull it up when they left port. “There’s a ladder over there,” Adam said, pointing to the ladder on the side of Captain Billy One Tooth’s ship. Adam grabbed Kaitlyn’s hand and they flew over the side of the ship. They flew low so the crew on Captain Billy One Tooth’s Ship wouldn’t see them. They were all too busy surrounding the two arguing pirates and waiting for the Captain’s orders. Adam and Kaitlyn boarded the ship as quiet as a mouse, and their plan had begun.

54

55

Chapter 12

Saving the Crew “Shh,” whispered Adam, trying to make sure Kaitlyn didn’t make any creaking noises as they walked across the poop deck. They tip-toed to the jail cells without getting caught. Kaitlyn remembered exactly where they were located. Their hair stood on the backs of their necks they were so scared. When they got to the jail cells, all the captives were so excited they had come. “Ahoy me matey! A fine gentleman o’ fortune be ye!” one of the pirates whispered. Kaitlyn used her lasers to remove the locks from each cell to free the pirates. The final thing they had to do was make it back to their ship without being caught. Adam flew each of the crew members one by one to their ship as quietly as he could. TyCon saw what Adam and Kaitlyn were doing, so he tried to keep the arguing going as long as possible between the two Captains. “Ahoy!” they shouted once they got back to Green-Eyed’s ship. “It has been so long!” They were so happy to see it again. Adam told them to stay down so the crew on the other ship wouldn’t see them. When they got to the last pirate, he told them to wait. He knew where One Tooth had their gold. He wasn’t leaving without it.

56

57

Thankfully, Green-Eyed, One Tooth, and Smelly Boots were dueling on the helm. The other pirates on the ship had gotten into the fight as well and were dueling each other. It seems that seeing the Captain’s fighting got them all upset as they began to call each other names, which led to chaos. While everyone was distracted, they slipped into One Tooth’s office and found GreenEyed’s treasure chest in the closet. The pirate and Adam picked it up and moved it out onto the deck and to the side of the ship, away from everyone else. Adam told Kaitlyn to activate her shield to protect her and the treasure until he could fly the pirate to their ship and come back for her. Adam took off and Kaitlyn hoped his plan would work. They were so close to going home. Kaitlyn went mostly unnoticed until just before Adam came back. She had been timing her power. She had less than a minute left before she would have to reactivate it. Just as she was counting down the last thirty seconds, one of One Tooth’s crew noticed her. “Aye! It’s the girl! the pirate said. “And, she has Green-Eyed’s treasure! Quick, get the treasure and let’s send her to Davy Jones Locker!” Kaitlyn’s shield ran out. She didn’t have time to reactivate it before the pirates were upon her. She fought them off with the lasers from her glasses. TyCon heard the commotion and flew over to help. Just as one of the pirates closed in on her, she heard Adam and TyCon yell her name. Tycon grabbed the treasure and Adam grabbed Kaitlyn just as a large group of pirates leaped toward her. They escaped, but barely. When they landed on Captain Green-Eyed’s ship, they were surrounded by the crew they had freed. Their plan was a success! Adam yelled, “Captain Green-Eyed!” from the ship. When Captain Green-Eyed saw his whole crew on his ship, he shouted, “Well, blow me down, that be me whole crew!” He fought his way to the edge of the helm and then quickly left One Tooth’s ship and flew to his own.

58

One Tooth, Smelly Boots, and the rest of the crew were stunned. They had been beaten. The crew immediately went to the cannons, but during all the fighting, Tycon had dumped all their cannons into the ocean. “WHAT?!” Captain Billy One Tooth shouted. “How did ye get yer crew! Ye were right here the whole time!” he continued. “It’s over!” Green-Eyed replied. “Ye lost!” Captain Green-Eyed told his crew to “Set Sail!” They lifted the anchor and the boat began to rise. They took to the skies so they could get away faster. They had to find ‘em a safe place and quick. It was time to get Adam and Kaitlyn back to their beach vacation.

Chapter 13

Returning Home “Land ho!” Captain Green-Eyed Pirate shouted. They had made it back to Ocracoke Island. “There are just two more things to do. I would like to invite Russel to join me crew.” “Aye! Aye!” everyone shouted. “I accept,” Russel said. Russel was very happy to be part of their crew. Then, Green-Eyed turned to Adam and Kaitlyn. “Alright, kiddos. I guess it’s time to get ye landlubbers back home,” he said. “Will we ever see you again?” Kaitlyn and Adam were going to miss Green-Eyed. “Ye still have yer hero phone I gave ye?” he asked. “Well… actually, mine got lost when I was taken captive on Billy One Tooth’s ship,” Kaitlyn exclaimed. “Good news! I have a spare hero phone on hand ye shall have,” Green Eyed said as he handed it to Kaitlyn. “Do ye have yers, Adam?” “Yes,” he replied. “I can give ye a call when we shall need ye again. Oh yeah! The time paused while ye were here, so nothing changed. The hole will be filled up and time will resume

61

with ye on top of it. Don’t tell anyone about yer adventure here ‘cause we don’t want ye to reveal our secret identities,” GreenEyed exclaimed. “Can we keep our gadgets?” the kids asked. “I’m afraid not,” Green-Eyed said. “When ye come back, I shall loan them to ye again.” Captain Green-Eyed and Adam flew Kaitlyn off the ship and to the beach. They handed over their superhero gadgets and waved good-bye to the crew and TyCon. “Bye, Adam. Bye, Kaitlyn,” TyCon shouted from the ship. “Bye, TyCon,” they shouted back. They turned to Green-Eyed. They knew it would be hard to hug a ghost, but they had to try. Captain Green-Eyed could see they were unsure, so he put his arms around them and pulled them in close. It felt strange hugging a ghost. Their hands went through his back, giving them a cold sensation. “Thank you for inviting us to be a part of saving your crew,” Adam said. “Yes, it was so fun. We will miss you,” said Kaitlyn. Bye, kiddos. Ye landlubbers helped me save me crew and me treasure. I am very proud of ye. Now let’s not get all watery with ye eyes! I will see ye again soon,” Green-Eyed said. “Now grab hands and close ye eyes and count to three.” Adam and Kaitlyn counted to three and they were back on top of the hole. They each looked at each other and laughed. “I can’t wait for the next adventure,” Kaitlyn said as she winked at Adam. “Me too,” said Adam.
