air has definitely moved on for autumn 08. Gone is summer’s matt look hair texture and we say a very welcome hello to swingy, shiny autumn hair. So ditch the dry shampoo and reach for the shine spray!

The key to hair in the coming season is unfussy and soft. At Burberry Prorsum and Oscar de la Renta, we saw pin-straight, shiny hair teamed with a 70s’ nude lip. Versace, usually famed for its überglam hair, sent girls down the runway in the prettiest buns with natural, wispy pieces falling across the face.

MONDAY ART TEAM MEMBER: Jonathan Soons BOOKING: Julien Macdonald catwalk show I couldn’t sleep last night because today I am working with Samantha Hillerby for the first time! I wake to the sound of three alarms (because you never know) and jump in the shower. Get to Green Park with a bad neck from the weight of my kit – thank god for the invention of the wheel! Get to Lancaster House and the police are outside – luckily I remembered to bring my photo ID. After 10 minutes of them looking me up and down in my skinnys

The first model comes in straight from Luella show and Sam talks us through the hair for the show: fuse the hair flat, tuck behind the ears and texture the ends with your finger – simple but beautiful! Then the models start rolling in fast and everything goes mental.

Unfortunately for us the hair needs to be clean so we head to the toilets – its not all glamour you know! Then it’s three stylists to one girl as we are tight on time, and finally the models are all prepped and ready to go.

Then it’s show time!! This is it, we line up and they are out. The music is so loud and clothes are flying everywhere. Then suddenly it’s all over; three hours of work for six minutes of showtime! Then it’s a quick dinner at Itsu and a bit of a rest ready for the next show Anna Sophia Back – here we go again...

TUESDAY ART TEAM MEMBER: Herman Ho BOOKING: Company Magazine Front Cover and six-page feature It’s an early start as I know this is going to be a busy shoot. The booking is for Company’s birthday issue and we’re shooting eight celebrities for a special pull-out front cover.

I’ve packed my session kit the night before so all I have to do is jump on my scooter and whiz through the London traffic. It’s a quick coffee when I arrive and then straight to work. I start with the girls: Joanna Page from Gavin and Stacey, who I give some soft movement to her trademark bob. Next was Gabriella Cilmi, the singer/songwriter who penned this summer’s hit, Sweet about Me. For her look we went a bit more rock and roll and she really pulled it off in style.

Next up was James Morrison; I love his music so it was great to meet him and I actually cut his hair for the shoot. Then I moved on to Tamsin Egerton, the St Trinian’s actress. She was great fun and has gorgeous hair to work with. Once finished I nipped back on the scooter and out for dinner with friends.

WEDNESDAY ART TEAM MEMBER: Darren Hau BOOKING: Top secret Living TV show Wake up to alarm at 6.30 and get up really excited – doing a top secret TV show with living legend Twiggy – WOW! Usual morning ritual and then jump in the car sent to pick me up, all hyped up ready to go! Grab coffee on run to location, then call my team to make sure everything is bang on schedule.

Arrive at studio for a quick meeting with the producer. I then brief the team on hair looks for the day – today it’s about centre-parted, fish-tail plaits done very loosely either side of the head, then disheveled and pinned to create a soft textured boho-luxe look.

I leave the team to carry on, and nip to a meeting with show presenters Twiggy, Paula Reed and Lauren Leverne – so lovely! Then rush off to do celebrity guests. I did Fearne Cotton’s hair who was just so friendly and gorgeous. I gave her a 70s Gucci look, bang on trend for AW08.

Grabbed some lunch but far too excited to eat so have a ciggie (naughty I know).

Wrapped up for the day and said goodbyes to the crew – a brilliant day with everyone.

THURSDAY ART TEAM MEMBER: James Busby BOOKING: Nathan Jenden under Sam Hillerby and Vodafone Live show with the Headmasters Team 7am – rise and shine, and majorly excited because I’ve got a long busy day ahead. Today I’m doing my fourth show of LFW under the amazing Sam Hillerby and her fantastic team.

The hair was loose, uncontrived ponytails with ribbons and brooches attached to create interest.

Before I knew it I was rushing around 10 minutes before the show pinning in brooches and hats and making sure all the hair was where it needed to be.

It was all over in a flash; then I had to find my equipment and it was on to the next job at Dex private members’ club in Brixton at 7pm for the Vodafone Live show. I helped Claire, Herman and Joan build a huge L’Oréal Playball castle of products, during which time I ate my own weight in Jelly babies and felt a bit sick! www.hmhair.co.uk

At 9pm the stars rolled up. Drinks were flowing for the celebs and I did Holly Willoughby’s hair, giving her a rock-chick look. Then I had a little chat with the guy from Bo Selector in character and cut the hair of a couple of members from The Automatic.

Had a quick break and went upstairs to a BBQ on the roof where we saw Emma Bunton and Mark Ronson and ate mini burgers – finally, as we were starving!

The party wrapped up at 1.30 and I jumped straight in a taxi home.

Everyone heads off at 11am for a much needed quick coffee break. We then do a third demonstration of a men’s long cut.

Before we know it it’s lunch. James and I eat together and discuss our students expectations to make sure they go away with everything they need.

At 1.30 we begin our workshop.

Each stylist works on one or two models on an area they need upskilling on. James and I work on a one-to-one basis with them. At 4pm we recap on the day, and everyone fills in their feedback forms. We then head out with any of the students who want to for a quick drink afterwards.

We meet at Hammersmith at 8.45 and sit down over a morning latté to go over course content and our models for the day.

At 9.30 we meet our students and begin our introduction. OBSTACLES

The biggest obstacle we had was making sure we had a brilliant team to open with, as being able to lock people into a new salon that hasn’t even opened yet is challenging.

Also promoting our salon in the local area took lots of focus and energy. The PR and Marketing team at Headmasters helped with the launch but we wanted to use all the marketing tools available to us, so the HM Magazine was a huge success for us locally.

SECRET TO SUCCESS

Super organisation, planning and having very high standards. Also don’t be scared to have a slightly bigger team for the first few months. We got busy really fast so it was essential that we had the team to cope with demand.

ADVICE

Mock up every last detail of your perfect salon. Visualise what your team will be like, and think about education, what you’d like to earn in the first year – everything – and work backwards from there.

We would have concentrated harder on getting our reception right to start with, and taken more of the reception courses offered by Headmasters. We took for granted how much goes into it, and our team got busy so fast that we needed our reception team in place.

Also don’t listen to too much to people trying to sell to you, like local newspapers offering deals. Take time to make your decision and ask the advice of the Marketing and PR team.
