Overview Head-Royce is a nationally recognized K-12 independent school nestled in the hills of Oakland. Our mission is to inspire a lifelong love of learning with a focus on scholarship, diversity, and citizenship. Head-Royce enrolls a diverse student body of approximately 875 talented and ambitious learners. We grant close to $5 million in financial aid annually. With small class sizes, we can focus on educational excellence and social-emotional learning.

ADMISSIONS The School seeks a diverse student body; admission is open to all students regardless of race, color, religion, gender, disability, sexual orientation, nationality or ethnic origin. The key entry points into the School are Kindergarten, 6th Grade and 9th Grade. Additional spaces may occasionally be available in grades 1 through 11.

OUR STUDENTS Head-Royce enrolls approximately 875 students: 240 in the Lower School, 270 in Middle School, and 365 in the Upper School. Students come from Oakland, Berkeley, and over 30 other Bay Area communities. Students of color comprise more than 52% of our population. For the 2016-2017 academic year, the School will award nearly $5 million in financial aid to more than 25% of our students.

OUR FACULTY Head-Royce faculty members are experts in their fields; eager to share their enthusiasm for their subjects. They are devoted to discovering the ideal approach for each child, and dedicated to inspiring students to reach their highest potential. The School has 100 teaching faculty members who have an average of nearly 12 years of teaching experience. Advanced degrees are held by 84% of the faculty, including six doctorate degrees. The student-faculty ratio is 8:1.
STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES We provide our educators with tools and programs to promote the socialemotional development of each student, which is implemented daily by classroom teachers working in small classes and in close relationship with their students.
COMMUNITY SERVICE Service learning provides students with an opportunity to get experience on a variety of social issues and to see first-hand their effect on the community. We incorporate community service into our Lower, Middle, and Upper School curriculum.
TECHNOLOGY Technology is fully integrated into our K-12 academic program. We have a dedicated computer lab plus multiple mobile laptop and iPad carts, an upper school graphic arts lab, a photo and video lab, a world language lab, and an expository writing lab. Every classroom, K-12, has an LCD projector; many have document cameras, Smartboards, and Apple TVs. Our Lower School teachers have integrated iPads and Chromebooks into the curriculum. Teachers are on the cutting edge and integrate technology into class projects that include multimedia projects, podcasts, animation, films, and presentations.

Our Faculty Our faculty is world-class, and brings unique perspectives from a wide range of experiences. Their diversity of thought, coupled with their subject matter mastery, uniquely positions them to provide transformative experiences to every student across our K-12 setting. They are led by this team of educational leaders. CRYSTAL M. LAND
LEA VAN NESS
Head of School
Head of the Lower School
Crystal Land is a passionate educator who believes that student-centered learning transforms lives. She has enjoyed over 25 years in academic leadership as an English teacher, educational consultant, senior administrator, and Assistant Head of School. Since joining Head-Royce in 1989, Crystal has focused careful attention on creating learning environments where students and professionals can thrive personally and academically. Crystal holds a B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley, an M.A. in education from Stanford University, and an M.A. in English from Middlebury College. She currently resides in Oakland with her husband, Will Miller, and their dog, Riley. They have two children, Zach ’09 and Haley ’14, both Head-Royce alumni.
Lea Van Ness has a B.A. in psychology and liberal arts from University of the Pacific, a Master’s in educational leadership from Bank Street College, a multiple subject teaching credential, and a mild/ moderate learning disabilities credential. Lea taught second, third, fifth, and eighth grades, coordinated a school accreditation, and was the technology coordinator for Charles Armstrong School in Belmont. She has also worked as an educational consultant with families in the San Francisco area. For 12 years, Lea taught fourth grade and for seven of those years she was the Assistant Lower School Head before beginning her career as the Head of the Lower School. Lea has four children attending Head-Royce. Her free time is spent exercising, growing flowers and vegetables, and reading books for three book clubs.

A graduate of Head-Royce School, Middle School Head Linda Hoopes attended Scripps College where she received a B.A. in American studies with an emphasis in history, and she received her teaching credential from California State University, Fresno. Linda holds an M.A. in teaching leadership from Saint Mary’s College. She began her teaching career at Head-Royce as a first grade assistant. She also taught at Emerson Elementary School in Berkeley and in the sixth grade at Head-Royce for 11 years. She and her husband Dave lived overseas for four years where they both taught at American schools in Italy and Brazil. They currently live in Richmond with their two sons. In her spare time, Linda loves to take road trips with her family.
Raised in both California and Europe, Upper School Head Carl Thiermann is a graduate of Westtown Friends School in Pennsylvania. Carl received his B.A. from Oberlin College and an M.A. in English from the University of California, Berkeley. In addition to directing the Upper School at HeadRoyce, Carl has also taught at independent schools in New York and San Francisco. He was a founding board member of the San Francisco Friends School. In his spare time, Carl loves to read fiction about the American West; he is also a critic of children’s and young adult literature. He and his wife Marla and their two sons live in Berkeley.

Lower School OUR ACADEMIC PROGRAM The Lower School offers an excellent foundation in all core subject areas. With a low student-to-teacher ratio, students thrive as learners with the ability to expand their skill base through a variety of learning modalities. The academic program emphasizes concepts and skills in the areas of reading, writing, mathematics, social studies, science, art, world language, library, music, physical education, and technology. Homeroom class structure includes daily class meetings that foster a welcoming community with emphasis on character building activities and service learning. Our goal is to foster the needs of the whole child. • World Languages begin in Kindergarten and continue through 5th Grade with the instruction of Spanish, Mandarin, and French. Language acquisition and cultural appreciation are presented in a variety of formats including target language immersion, hands-on activities, puppet shows, singing, written expression, and field trip exploration. • As part of the whole child experience, students actively participate in the following weekly specialist classes: art, physical education, library, and music (including singing, dance, movement, and instrumental instruction). • Cross-grade “family” groups meet regularly to build strong community bonds and to enjoy active engagement across the grade levels. • Grade 5 Leadership Council provides a structure for learning and identifying leadership qualities and characteristics that are modeled and applied through active community engagement. Fifth graders put their leadership skills in action through weekly assembly participation, spirit weeks, community service, and a first grade buddy program.

After-School Opportunities The After-School Program provides afterschool and out of school time care and enrichment classes for students in Kindergarten–8th Grade. The program aims to provide quality learning experiences for students through meaningful activities in both social-emotional and enrichment opportunities.
• Our robust After-School Program (ASP) provides K-5 students the opportunity to make meaningful connections across the grades in an unstructured play setting. Students are welcome to select from a variety of enrichment activities including: music (band, chorus, and private music lessons); sports (swimming and tennis); dance, as well as other classes (e.g. chess, taekwondo, graphic design, and 3D printing). • In partnership with the classroom teachers, technology, science, and garden instruction are taught through hands-on projects and active lessons that align with grade level curricular subjects. • The Idea Lab, or “maker space,” and Engineering Alley provide young innovators the opportunity and materials to design, engineer, and create original hands-on projects while also allowing them to expand their critical thinking and problem solving strategies.

Middle School OUR ACADEMIC PROGRAM The Middle School is designed to meet the developmental needs of this transitional age group. The student body in the Middle School is the perfect size to study complex topics in a nurturing environment. Faculty members are attuned to the development transitions that students face during this time and provide an environment that is physically, emotionally, and academically safe. The academic program builds upon the foundations introduced in the Lower School. • All students take English, history, math, science, and a world language (French, Spanish, Latin, Mandarin Chinese). • All students take physical education and life skills; study skills are incorporated into the school day. • Students go on outdoor education trips that include camping, hiking, river rafting, and a ropes course. • Student government and clubs provide students with leadership skills. • A modified block schedule allows for a combination of long blocks and short blocks for in-depth learning.
TECHNOLOGY All Middle School students are supplied with a school-owned iPad to use as an educational tool throughout the school year. The school has put a great deal of thought into this program. It is clear that taking full advantage of the technology available to us will enhance the student’s learning environment. This quote from the Head-Royce Digital Learning Mission says it best: “At Head-Royce digital learning is a critical K-12 tool designed to promote our core values for 21st century learning: our use of technology supports critical thinking, problem solving, interpersonal and media literacy skills, creativity, global competencies, and a sense of purpose.”
ATHLETICS Our goal is to provide student-athletes with opportunities for competition in which the lifelong values of sportsmanship, individual effort, teamwork, integrity, commitment, and self-discipline are emphasized throughout the sports season. Athletic teams are split up by grade level, or are a combination of grade levels.

Student Leadership Opportunities To foster an atmosphere of self-governance, Middle School students may apply to serve in one year posts in student government.
Experiential Learning Our School is a place of experiential learning where students are challenged to be inquisitive problemsolvers. This year, a group of educators created an election simulation as a way to help students think about the complicated concepts of democracy in a real way. Mimicking similar political processes of the national election, students listened to candidate speeches, campaigned for a candidate of their choosing, voted, and then engaged in reflection and debrief about the day in multigrade groups.
FINE ARTS Head-Royce provides all students with a well balanced curriculum including a strong arts program focusing on performing and visual arts.

Upper School OUR ACADEMIC PROGRAM Our challenging Upper School offers a strong college preparatory program with a variety of activities to supplement the academic curriculum and prepare students for college and beyond. In the Upper School’s academic program, all students take four years of English and at least three years each of math, history, science, and a world language (French, Spanish, Latin, Mandarin Chinese). • 16 AP courses in subjects ranging from Biology to Studio Art. • Outdoor education trips that include camping, sea kayaking, river rafting, and a high ropes course. • Students can get involved with the award-winning debate team, the student newspaper, and yearbook. • A wide range of student-initiated and organized clubs are available including Democracy Matters, Asia Club, Black Student Union, Fine Arts Dance Ensemble (FADE), and the Jane Austen Club. • Work-study jobs on campus include office support, tutoring, and lower school teaching assistance.
STUDENT LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES To foster an atmosphere of self-governance, Upper School students may apply to serve one-year posts on several faculty/student committees in areas such as curriculum, global citizenship, diversity, STEM, and student life. Additionally, senior prefects serve as mentors to freshman homerooms and peer facilitators lead family groups (18 upper school students and two faculty members) in monthly discussions of community issues.
ATHLETICS Through our premier athletic program, Head-Royce students can play on over 26 interscholastic teams. Our competitive programs have captured more than 50 league championships in the last 19 years. Sports offered include baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, track, and volleyball. Middle school teams compete in baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, tennis, and volleyball.
FINE AND PERFORMING ARTS Students are actively involved in the arts, participating in school musicals and dramatic productions, Orchestra, Jazz Band, Chorus and our select vocal group Colla Voce, as well as photography, graphic design, the video yearbook, and ongoing studio art exhibits. FADE, our intensive, student-run dance program, stages a major production each spring. Our Middle and Upper School musicians travel to music festivals across the country. 14

Computer Science The goal of our computer science program is to provide a coherent, multiyear course sequence in the subject. Upper school students can take up to four years of computer science. After completing AP Computer Science, students can take yearlong courses in data structures and advanced program design.
The Institute for Applied Learning Established in 2013, the Institute for Applied Learning (IAL) provides students with extensive and varied opportunities for hands-on learning, including internships and summer opportunities. The goal of the IAL is to encourage students’ future leadership in areas including global education and STEM (science, technology, engineering and math).
Global Citizenship Certificate In the fall of senior year, Global Citizenship Certificate (GCC) candidates, under the guidance of a faculty advisor, select a global issue of interest and craft essential questions to investigate. They then hone their research and writing skills while producing a paper for publication.

Getting to School 101 At Head-Royce, we want to make every aspect of your child’s day a great one. Our transportation program helps us do just that. With two bus options and a carpool program, we’re making sure all of our students get to school in a safe and convenient way that works for all our students—whether they are in Kindergarten or 12th Grade. Our transportation program also takes into account the fact that we are located in a residential neighborhood and have made a commitment to our neighbors to minimize traffic on Lincoln Avenue.

Convenient, Cost-Effective, Green, Fun: We have spent a lot of time working with parents to create a bus program that meets the needs of busy Bay Area families. With a combination of dedicated buses (provided by Michael’s Transportation) and AC Transit, our bus services are designed to minimize traffic and make getting your children to and from campus each day as simple as possible. Whether it’s an AC Transit line or one of our dedicated Michael’s buses, chances are, there’s a route near you!
We have a program for Upper School student drivers interested in carpooling with fellow students. To participate, visit the Upper School office and complete the necessary paperwork. Additionally, interested families can connect with other Head-Royce families to arrange carpooling. We enable this through the HRS Google Map. Once you’ve received your Head-Royce community log-in information, you can visit the Transportation/Bus Schedule page of our website to access the HRS Google Map.

Michael’s Transportation
Michael’s Transportation has been providing reliable and on-time hometo-school transportation within the greater Bay Area for over 30 years. Cost: $500 per family, per year AC Transit
AC Transit provides bus routes for Alameda County schools, including Head-Royce. While these buses are scheduled with the school calendar, they are open to all passengers at regular fares. AC Transit 604/605 and AC Transit 606 make multiple stops at the School in the morning and afternoon and are generally full of other Head-Royce students and faculty. 18
DROP OFF/PICK UP We ask our families to use carpooling or bus service as much as possible. When it’s necessary to drive your child to campus, we have established a detailed pick up/drop off system designed toreduce disruption to our neighbors. Rules include using the designated loop, not making U-Turns, and remaining in your vehicle. All parents should become familiar with the pick up/drop off system because it is in effect every day of the year, seven days a week. A complete list of rules is available in the Transportation/Bus Schedule section of our website under the heading “Transportation Policy Guide.”
