We hope you are having a wonderful spring — it has been beautiful here in the Oakland hills. We wanted to get in touch to let you know what is going on at Head-Royce and the best way to contact us. We know some of our neighbors have questions about what is being planned for the Lincoln Child Center (LCC) property. Our master plan process has been under way since the purchase of the property last year. However, with the selection of our architect, we are kicking off the next phase of the process that will help us determine the best uses of the current campus and the LCC. While we are still evaluating which school functions might be most appropriate at the LCC site, we are also looking closely at creative solutions for solving issues related to parking and transportation. This master plan process is extremely important and input from neighbors will be critical. We’ve included some information on how you can get involved.

In addition to planning for the future, we are also focused on a number of shorter-term priorities. These include working with community leaders to enhance our campus and neighborhood security. We are also preparing for our annual Summer Program that brings in students from throughout Oakland and Alameda County. We look forward to engaging with all members of our school community and surrounding neighborhoods as part of our master plan process. We will be in touch this fall with more ways to work together. In the meantime, feel free to contact me via email or phone with questions or concerns. Sincerely, Rob Lake Head of School rlake@headroyce.org 510.531.1300 x2110

Meet Our Security and Community Relations Team

Security: A Shared Concern The school employs three security guards to keep the campus safe and help ensure the members of our community are acting like good neighbors. In addition, Darnell, Rhonda and Janice serve as eyes and ears on the street and are a deterrent to crime in the immediately adjacent blocks. The guards are on duty from 7 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and on the weekend when events are held on campus. They rotate doing rounds of the Head-Royce property, going up to the parking lot above the school, over to the Lincoln Child Center property parking lots and down in front of the school on Lincoln Avenue. They also are stationed at key points during school dismissal to help with traffic flow and to remind parents of school policies, including driving rules.

Did you know that neighbors can use our outdoor spaces? You can apply to receive a key card to access the tennis courts, playground and athletic fields or just take a walk around our 14 acre campus. Application forms can be obtained in the reception area of the school and applicants must submit a recent utility bill to show proof of address as well as a $25 deposit for the gate key card. Please note this access is for individual use only, not for groups or teams, and is available for people walking onto the campus, not driving.

Janice has been with HRS since 2006. She lives in San Leandro and works from 12:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. You may have seen her helping out with the car queue during afternoon pick up on Lincoln Avenue. She is a grandmother of four and enjoys having a job that allows her to be around kids all day!

Rhonda has been working at HRS for 6 years and lives not far from the school, near Mills College in Oakland. She works from 7 a.m. to 3:45 p.m., meaning she’s one of the first people to arrive on the HRS campus. You probably have seen her covering the reception desk if you’ve come into the Gatehouse. She likes working at HRS because the kids are fun, she gets to spend a good part of each day outside and because she’s never bored — there is always something to keep her busy!

Darnell has been working at Head-Royce for 1.5 years, lives in the Lower Dimond district and walks to campus. He works the 2 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. shift Monday through Friday. You may have seen him helping with the car queue at the Mormon temple parking lot during afternoon pick up. He enjoys working at the school because of all the positive energy on campus!

Mary has worked at HeadRoyce since 1982. In her role as community relations director, she oversees drop-off and pick-up procedures, including the f low of traffic on Lincoln Avenue; regularly attends community meetings; and serves as a liaison for several neighborhood groups. She also currently serves as the associate director of Upper School admissions and taught in K-12 classrooms as well as coached women’s softball and girl’s volleyball for 29 years. Mary received her B.S. in kinesiology from San Jose State University. She and her husband Walter reside in a home immediately adjacent to the school. Their four children, Sarah ’98, Jacqueline ’00, Matthew ’04 and Bobby ’08 were all “lifers” at Head-Royce, attending from kindergarten through 12th grade.

With the help of SOM, we are developing ways for our community and neighbors to be involved in the master plan process. As part of our continuing effort to invite neighbors’ participation in our planning efforts, we are hosting meetings in June and hope you’ll plan to attend. Come meet the SOM team, learn about the process and give us information about your priorities and feedback.

Summer Program The Head-Royce Summer Program offers children in grades K-12 developmentally appropriate academic, innovative, technological, physical and socially expansive activities. The program has an exceptional and experienced faculty and staff that includes Head-Royce and Oakland Unified teachers as well as high school students from around Oakland. The academic goal of our program is to solidify skills learned in the prior school year and introduce new concepts for the upcoming grade level. Many local families with working parents depend on the program, which runs in two sessions from June 16 to July 3 and July 7 to July 25, to provide a safe place for their kids to continue their education in a fun and nurturing manner. Last year 70% of our campers were from Oakland, with 41% from the Oakland Unified School District and 13% from the school’s immediate neighborhood.
