The mission of Head‑Royce School is to inspire in our students a lifelong love of learning and pursuit of academic excellence, to promote understanding of and respect for diversity that makes our society strong and to encourage active and responsible global citizenship. Founded in 1887, Head‑Royce is an independent, nondenominational, coeducational, college-preparatory K–12 school, which offers a challenging educational program to educate the whole child. The school nurtures the development of each individual student through a program that seeks: • to develop intellectual abilities such as scholarship and disciplined, critical thinking; • to foster in each student respect, integrity, ethical behavior, compassion and a sense of humor; • to promote responsibility and leadership, an appreciation of individual and cultural differences and a respect for the opinions of others; • to nurture aesthetic abilities such as creativity, imagination, musical and visual talent; and • to encourage joyful, healthy living; a love of nature; and physical fitness.

2014–2015 ANNUAL REPORT 3
From the Board Chair 2014–2015 was another year of successes for Head-Royce School. We made significant achievements in supporting our mission by funding important curriculum improvements, supporting student enrichment programs, attracting and nurturing outstanding faculty and staff, and building on our endowment — all to the benefit of HeadRoyce students, present and future. What made this year so distinctive in its success? The answer is simple: you. While we take on the important task of finding a permanent Head of School, we are pleased that Crystal Land — seen above visiting campus this fall — has returned to Head-Royce as our Interim Head of School for the next two academic years. Crystal is a passionate and accomplished K–12 educator with nearly three decades of experience, both in the classroom and as an administrator. She is also a familiar face at Head-Royce, having many roles since she began in 1989 including parent of two Head-Royce “lifer” alumni, Zach ’09 and Haley ’14. Most recently, she served as Assistant Head of
School before leaving in 2014 to pursue consulting with independent schools across the Bay Area. During her time as a consultant, Crystal gained valuable experience leading strategic planning projects at a number of schools, served on two local educational boards and was a key collaborator with an organization that approaches problem solving and school systems through a humancentered, design thinking approach. She is excited and energized to bring this fresh perspective to Head-Royce. The board is confident Crystal has the expertise, character and innovative leadership to carry forth the school’s vision for the next two years. It is with pleasure that I welcome Crystal into
As the Chair of the Board of Trustees and parent of two Head-Royce boys, I am constantly reminded how fortunate Head-Royce is to have a community with such a passionate desire to make a difference. This spirit is not just embraced by teachers, but also by our parents, alumni, grandparents, and friends who seek opportunities to have an impact today and for those who will follow. Once again, thank you to our many committed donors and volunteers whose values, shared experiences and traditions help shape our students into active and lifelong learners. Your impact is truly significant. Sincerely,

PROFILE IN GIVING
Jessica Xu ’15 Why was it important for you to give to the school as a senior and to help lead the Senior Giving effort? Senior year at HeadRoyce is structured so that students can reflect on what they’ve learned or experienced throughout their time at Head-Royce. Particularly when I was constructing my college applications, I realized how much the school had given me; I was able to participate in an abundance of extracurriculars, get internships through relationships with faculty and other students, and make lasting, impactful relationships with everyone at the school. However, I have come to appreciate how
20 HEAD-ROYCE SCHOOL
Head-Royce has far more than a plethora of resources — the supportive community here encourages students to push themselves and expand their horizons. Being a part of this wonderful place has always humbled me and I have always felt unbelievably grateful for the teachers and opportunities I’ve had. When I was offered the chance to help plan a gift from my senior class to the school, I was more than ecstatic to participate. I felt that this was a way for me to give back to my school for all it has done for me. What has Head-Royce taught you about philanthropy? Head-Royce has taught me to be grateful for everything I have, from the education I have received to the opportunities I’ve had. Head-Royce’s values of empathy and compassion combined with the tight knit community I shared with my classmates, taught me how important it is to collaboratively work towards a better world in whatever ways possible.
What do you most look forward to as a Head-Royce alumna? I am excited to start a new chapter in my life and attend a new school, since I was a lifer at Head-Royce. I have been interested in the field of law for over two years now, so I hope to attend law school and pursue that career path. In terms of being a Head-Royce alumna, I look forward to celebrating the achievements of my classmates and catching up at the reunions. I am also excited about joining the alumni community of HeadRoyce and seeing the school from a different perspective.
everything they can to help a student in need and as a former student, I have always appreciated that. I will take away everything my teachers have taught me, inside and outside the classroom: everything from how to write critically and take the derivative to pushing myself to do the best I can do. I will forever treasure everything I have learned from everyone at Head-Royce throughout my 13 years here.
What do you take away and value most about your time at Head-Royce? I have valued my teachers the most from my time at Head-Royce. I truly cannot express my gratitude for the passionate, caring and invested Head-Royce teachers. They are the most inspiring group of adults I’ve ever met — they are constantly pushing students to reach their fullest potential. The Head-Royce faculty never fail to do 2014–2015 ANNUAL REPORT 21

SEPTEMBER Head-Royce Group Rallies Against Climate Change A contingent of Head1 Royce students, faculty and administrators joined the Northern California People’s Climate Rally on Sunday, Sept. 21 at Lake Merritt. It was one of 15 events in California held in solidarity with the People’s Climate March in New York City, the largest climate change gathering in history with an estimated 400,000 people. Head-Royce Hosts SEED Workshop Head-Royce hosted the first meeting of the San Francisco Bay Area Regional SEED (Seeking Educational Equity and Diversity) for 15 public and independent school teachers and administrators. They came together to share ideas and professional support in leading SEED seminars in their respective schools. The SEED project engages teachers, college faculty, parents and community leaders from all subjects, grades and geographic locations to create gender-fair, multi-culturally equitable, socio-economically aware and globally-informed education.

1 Alumna Author Speaks About Memoir Rebecca Alexander ’97, the 2 recipient of the 2013 HeadRoyce Distinguished Alumni of the Year Award, returned to campus on Monday, Sept. 29 to discuss her memoir published by Gotham Books. Not Fade Away: A Memoir of Senses Lost and Found describes Rebecca’s disability, a rare genetic disorder called Usher Syndrome Type III that has deteriorated her sight and hearing. Since her diagnosis, she earned dual master’s degrees in social work and public health from Columbia University, and is a trained psychotherapist practicing in New York City.
OCTOBER Students Visit Mission Murals Upper School Spanish teacher 3 Luz Diaz took a group of students to San Francisco’s Mission District for a tour of the colorful and politically charged murals in the historic Latino neighborhood. After an introductory presentation about muralism in general and Mexican muralism specifically, the group took a walking
tour of ‘Balmy Alley’ located at 24th Street and Clarion Alley. Diaz has devoted class time to learning about some of the characters depicted in the murals including icons from the Mexican Revolution, civil rights leaders, and stars from Mexico’s ‘Golden Age’ of cinema (1936 to 1969). Students Cross Social Boundaries Middle School students at HeadRoyce joined more than one million students across the country to help break down social and racial barriers by participating in the 12th annual ‘Mix It Up at Lunch Day’. The event, launched by the Southern Poverty Law Center’s Teaching Tolerance Project in 2002, encourages students to sit with someone new at lunch for just one day. “‘Mix It Up’ is a positive step that schools can take to help create learning environments where students see each other as individuals and not just as members of a separate group,” said Teaching Tolerance Director Maureen Costello. “When people step out of their cliques and get to know someone, they realize just how much they have in common.”

Calculus Lesson Brought to Life Upper School calculus students toured the former Lincoln Child Center property (the eight-acre property across Lincoln Avenue that Head-Royce purchased in 2013) to orient themselves with the site in their preparation to use their knowledge of calculus to build a scale model of an optimized structure/ building for the school’s eventual expansion. The students considered the school’s mission and their own perceived needs of the school as they decided what to build, as well as the topography of the site. Oakland Mayor’s Head-Royce Ties Oakland’s new mayor, Libby 4 Schaaf, who captured 63% of the vote during the Nov. 4 election, attended Head-Royce before transferring to Skyline High after her sophomore year. During ‘Decision Point — A Mayoral Candidate Forum’ held on campus on Nov. 3, Schaaf gave a few shout outs to her alma mater. “You should have confidence I will be a great mayor because I’m a Jayhawk,” Schaaf said. “My communication skills were honed by Dr. Enelow, my ability to defend my positions by Dr. Barankin ... and I fell in love with math and know how to balance a budget because of Cathy Epstein.” Upper School Art Students Tour Ai Weiwei Exhibit at Alcatraz On Nov. 14, 41 Upper School art students led by art teacher Ann Murphy traveled to Alcatraz on the ferry to view the @LARGE exhibit by Ai Weiwei, a Chinese artist and activist who was secretly detained in 2011 by China and coordinated the exhibit from his homeland since he is forbidden to travel abroad. Computer Science Education Week. Students in all divisions had the opportunity to try their hand at coding, with parent volunteers who work in the field of computer science helping out in Lower and Middle School sessions. Students also learned about 3-D printing’s real-world applications with a special guest and parent Dan Bodner, whose work has been featured on CBS News.
DECEMBER Annual Alumni Holiday Tradition On December 4, 2014, more than 60 Head-Royce Alumni met at Mua Restaurant and Bar in downtown Oakland to kick off the holiday season, mingle with fellow local alumni and reconnect with old classmates and friends. SPCA Visitors Educate First Graders About Pets Head-Royce participated in 5 the East Bay SPCA’s CARE classroom program in an effort to eliminate animal cruelty, neglect and overpopulation by providing programs and education that support people and companion animals. On Friday, Dec. 5, an East Bay SPCA Humane Education Coordinator brought Jane, a two-year-old rescue Chihuahua, to visit the first graders. The visit had a theme of compassion and included a reading of Maggie’s Second Chance, a book about a pregnant black Labrador abandoned by her family who inspired a town to start an animal shelter. Lower School Language Students Show Gratitude To animate life lessons around the theme of gratitude, students in grades 2-5 learned how to express thanks in French, Mandarin and Spanish and made cards featuring common sayings or quotes related to a theme in each language. The cards were made to honor the school’s custodial, maintenance, cafeteria, and safety workers for the many ways they offer kindness to our students on a daily basis.

Middle School Students Create Newspaper A group of motivated sixth graders banded together to form the MS Monitor, a newspaper for middleschoolers. The Monitor began online in early January with plans to publish a paper in the spring. The staff of 16 divided themselves into different ‘desks’ and turned out a number of stories on a wide range of topics including racial tension, the lunch lines, the Middle School spelling bee, book and film reviews, communitycollaborative serialized fiction, a photo-humor section, and video/ audio blogs. The team members authored and posted the content themselves through Google Sites.
Fourth Graders Explore Camp Arroyo Fourth graders went on an overnight trip to Camp Arroyo for real-life lessons on science and social studies. The students’ primary focus was a hands-on look at earth materials such as rocks and minerals, as well as the causes and effects of land erosion. They also learned about the rich history of the native Ohlone people. Engineering Students Show Off Work Upper School seniors in Chris Kinney’s engineering class — a new elective — conducted a poster session to demonstrate what they learned and accomplished during the first semester. Mr. Kinney explained that he wanted to both give his engineering students some practical experience that they could use later in college, as well as provide them with a chance to show off all their hard work. Some students chose to build toothpick bridges using only toothpicks and Elmer’s glue. The winning bridge held up to 85 pounds of weight!
FEBRUARY Middle School Celebrates Chinese New Year Students in Middle School Mandarin teacher Shuang Gou’s classes welcomed the Year of the Ram by practicing their calligraphy, writing characters about their zodiac signs and phrases representing good wishes. Then the sixth, seventh and eighth graders made and ate dumplings together and played a short trivia game about the Spring Festival, where students earned red envelopes with small traditional Chinese gifts inside.
Panelists Reflect on Racism and Social Justice As part of the Day of Dialogue: Racism, Inequality and Social Justice on Tuesday, February 10, HeadRoyce hosted a panel discussion for Upper School students with four community members: Alameda County Judge Charles Smiley, civil rights attorney Jim Chanin, journalist and nonprofit organization manager Jenee Darden, and alumna and college administrator Yalie Kamara ’03. The panelists discussed their backgrounds and experience with racism and answered questions from panel moderator college counselor Carrie Horsey, and students in the audience.
MARCH Visitors Share Traditions with Lower School Students The Lower School hosted several visitors who shared music and dance traditions from their rich ethnic cultures. Fifth graders learned from members of Gamelan Sekar Jaya, a 60-member company of musicians and dancers specializing in the performing arts of Bali. The following day, Richard Quiroga, a member of the Rumsien Ohlone tribe, shared his cultural traditions with fourth graders, animating the lessons on the Ohlone that they had studied. Quiroga also taught songs and dances of his indigenous culture to third graders. Robohawks Qualify for World Championships at Top State Contest All of the Robohawks teams — three in the Upper School and one in the Middle School — were crowned champions at the Northern California VEX Robotics State Championship in San Jose, qualifying them for the world championships in Louisville,

KY in April. More than 10,000 teams from 28 countries competed in VEX Robotics competitions. This year’s theme was ‘Skyrise,’ which required robots to pick up yellow plastic cylinders and build a six-foot-tall tower, as well as pick up plastic squares and score them on poles. Head-Royce was among the top 440 international teams competing in the world championship games. Head-Royce Fields First-Ever Girls’ Lacrosse Team Head-Royce formed its first-ever 7 girls’ lacrosse team of primarily eighth graders, including a few sixth and seventh graders. The team competed against local teams in the under 15 age bracket.
APRIL Middle School Recognizes Day of Silence The Middle School participated in the Day of Silence on Friday, April 17 to raise awareness for members of the LGBTQ community who often have to hide their true identity out of shame, lack of support, or outward danger. Some students chose to remain silent all day in recognition. Students also purchased $1 rainbow ribbons at lunch with all proceeds donated to the non-profit organization The Trevor Project, which provides crisis intervention and suicide prevention services for LGBTQ youth. Yearbook Students go to Denver Conference, Win Award from Publisher Art teacher Ann Murphy took eight Upper School students to Denver for the National High School Journalism Convention. The students — who are in the Advanced Graphics class and produce the Head-Royce yearbook

Nods and Becks — attended two days of sessions that addressed topics such as: innovative design, copyright, photography, organizing a 256-page book, writing relevant copy, conducting interviews, leading by example, and problem-solving. In addition, the Head-Royce yearbook publisher, Walsworth Publishing, selected the 2014–2015 edition of Nods and Becks for its ‘Gallery of Excellence’ based on its high quality design, coverage, copy and photography. Middle School and Upper School Latinists Attend State Convention Head-Royce Latinists from both MS & US participated in the statewide Junior Classical League convention at Miramonte High School in Orinda. Accompanied by teachers and advisors Thaddeus Lisowski and Gretchen Wu ’03, the Jayhawks competed in academics, athletics and arts activities alongside 1,500 other students from 39 schools statewide. The students watched chariot races and catapult launches and attended a variety of workshops, ranging from ‘Cicero: Eloquence Personified Then and Now’ to ‘Art of the Roman Republic’ to ‘Roman Insults’.
MAY Alumni Reunite Over 110 alumni, faculty and staff came together for this year’s Alumni Weekend, some of whom travelled from as far away as Mexico, South Carolina and Massachusetts. The alumni attendees spanned several generations with members of the Anna Head Class of 1950 celebrating their 65th reunion, to the first reunion members of the class of 2014.
Middle School Students Sail Boat Made from Reclaimed Materials Students in Jacqueline Botterman’s ‘Make It Move’ Middle School activities class accompanied their boat on its maiden voyage in the Head-Royce pool. The students used their design-thinking skills to test different boat designs and materials and spent three weeks working together on the boat, which was made primarily out of reused materials including juice bottles, dried-up whiteboard markers and old trash bags. Fifth Graders Commemorate Civil War Fifth graders finished 8 their “Nation Divided” unit on the Civil War with a commemoration ceremony. It was truly an interdisciplinary activity that brought together social studies, science, art and music. Each student designed their own contribution to the ceremony, including posters, collages, Google Site pages, board games, and a game show-type contest where participants answered questions about Abraham Lincoln. Musically inclined students rapped the Gettysburg Address and sang ‘Freedom Train’, a song about the Underground Railroad. Upper School Students Raise Money for Nepal Through Flower Sales A coalition of Upper School clubs and dedicated student activists joined forces to raise money through flower sales for a children’s home in Nepal following that country’s devastating earthquakes. The group raised $3,000 overall from sales of corsages and boutonnieres for the junior-senior prom, and bouquets for the promotion and graduation ceremonies.

Middle Schoolers Learn from Googlers at Conference Several Middle School students 9 attended the Google I/O Youth Conference at Moscone Center in San Francisco, the student-focused part of the tech giant’s annual developer conference. The students, who were nominated by their math and science teachers, worked with Google’s Lunar X PRIZE Project to program rovers on a simulated lunar surface, created stories using digital animation and voiceovers, and programmed their own yeti with the ‘Made with Code Apps’. The conference ended with a Q & A session with Googlers from the Loon Project, Google Play, Android Auto and more. Precalculus Students Create Graphic Novels Precalculus honors students in Neethi Venkateswaran and Thaddeus Lisowski’s classes created graphic novel projects on various mathematical ideas and notable mathematicians. The teachers were very impressed by their work, which included titles such as Godel’s Incompleteness Theorems, The Arrow Paradox, I Spoke to Godel, Yativrsabha’s Infinities, The Life of Sophie Germaine and What’s Logic Got to Do With It. The project allowed students to explore fields of study that they are interested in, such as the ties between mathematics and philosophy and the vastness of infinity.

Parent Participation In the spring of 2015, we challenged parents to surpass the previous year’s participation; by the end of the school year, more than 89% had participated. The parents of the class of 2022 even reached 100%, and the students in that class were treated to a special ice cream social in celebration!

Senior Class Gift This past year, the Senior Class Gift committee, comprised of 13 dedicated seniors, led their fellow classmates in a fundraising campaign to raise money for a meaningful class legacy gift. When asked the question “What makes Head-Royce special?”, the committee unanimously agreed that the teachers made their Head-Royce experience unique and special. The students were strongly motivated by the fact that since the faculty had enriched their lives, they wanted to reciprocate and enrich their teachers’ lives by growing the Professional Development Fund. At the conclusion of their fundraising efforts, the Seniors hosted a “Thankquet” luncheon for the US faculty to further express their gratitude, and presented the school with a check for $1,586.21 for the endowed Faculty Professional Development Fund.

Ann Hertelendy ’92 How did you come to attend Head-Royce School? My parents wanted us to have the best education and their research led to HeadRoyce. My brother Glen Hertelendy ’91 and I were both lucky to attend starting in kindergarten.
Ann and her family have been members of the Head-Royce community for over 35 years, since she and her brother began as kindergarteners at Head-Royce. Since then, she has been an active alumni volunteer, most recently serving on the Alumni Council.
54 HEAD-ROYCE SCHOOL
You made your first gift to Head-Royce as an alumna 13 years ago and have given every year since then. What inspired you to make your first gift? I began giving to HeadRoyce once I realized that students’ tuition bills did not pay the full price of our education — and it was thanks to private contributions that we could experience the full range of Head-Royce offerings. I
continue to give because I value the community that it stands for — a topnotch education along with collaborative spirit among students and educators alike. The small size of my class made it feel like I was raised in a mini ‘tribe’ of sorts, which I value to this day. When I attend a class reunion, it feels like a family gathering! (Hi Class of ’92!) What does it mean to you to be able to give back to your alma mater as an alumna? This may sound institutional, but I’m sincere in saying that it makes me feel good to give back because I’m supporting a cause that’s making the world a better place by teaching values of democracy and empathy (on top of strong academics and extracurriculars); the students in turn go out into the world and further disseminate these important values. The world is a huge place filled with diversity of thought and lifestyle. I believe a broad-based curriculum emphasizing openmindedness and worldliness — as Head-Royce
provides — can help shape future generations in a very positive manner. How has serving on the Alumni Council impacted you as an alumna? I’ve been fortunate to reconnect with Head-Royce in a very intimate way and love being at the forefront of the school’s priorities and happenings. My hope is to further bring alumni into the fold by developing our alumni network through events, career opportunities, peer-to-peer connectivity, regional reunions, and more. Would love to hear ideas from our alums! It has also brought me back to campus on a regular basis and introduced me to the ‘current’ generation of students and teachers — and I’ve been wholly humbled to discover how much the teachers and administration deeply care about the students and their sumtotal experience. Prior to joining the Council I knew that Head-Royce had been an amazing opportunity for me personally — but reconnecting as a Council
member opened my eyes to what it’s doing for the following generations. In that sense, my desire to give back has grown. You volunteered for the Alumni Giving Week phonathon last year. What was that experience like? I volunteered because I think that everyone who appreciates their HeadRoyce education should give back — not just to compensate for the donated portion of their schooling but also to “pay it forward” and provide an invaluable education to the current and following generations of students. The phonathon experience was truly rewarding because I was able to connect with grateful alums and hear some of their personal stories; as alums, we have one thing in common: we are pretty darn lucky to have attended Head-Royce and benefited from all that the school has to offer.

and will continue to be, a top philanthropic priority for me.
Melissa Williams
Melissa Williams has experienced HeadRoyce through the eyes of Olivia (10th grade), Grace (8th grade), Hollis (6th grade), and Johnny (4th grade), while also volunteering for numerous activities, including serving as co-chair for the Head-Royce year-long 125th anniversary celebration in 2012.
58 HEAD-ROYCE SCHOOL
What inspires you to make the Head-Royce Annual Fund a philanthropic priority for your family? I grew up in a small town in southern Virginia, the product of mediocre public schools. I was the first person in my family to go to college, where the inadequacy of my early education became instantly apparent. I knew then that I would do everything possible to give my own kids a different experience. When our family moved back to the Bay Area in 2008, we looked at lots of different schools. From the moment I walked through the gates of Head-Royce, I knew it was the educational environment I wanted for my kids. It has since been,
Thinking back to your first Annual Fund gift in 2008, what inspired you to write that check? Back then our family was new to independent schools, and I was surprised to learn from a parent volunteer that the tuition we paid did not cover the full cost of the Head-Royce education. Once I took a closer look at the programs that were made possible only through Annual Fund dollars — things like field trips, athletic equipment, and professional development for teachers — I simply couldn’t imagine NOT having these resources. I was happy to do my part to make that possible. You mentioned teachers — what have you loved most about the Head-Royce faculty over the years? Excellent teachers are the backbone of a quality education, and the faculty here at Head-Royce are world class. They love what they do. They are innovative and experimental, always looking for better ways
to engage students. They are dedicated. They invest in getting to know and inspiring each student individually. I especially appreciate the grade-level coordination of curricula across subject areas. I feel proud that the small teacherstudent ratio and access to new technology are provided by unrestricted Annual Fund donations. How has your perspective changed in the seven years that you have been a HeadRoyce parent? Each and every year, this school somehow manages to get even better, in every division (our family still spans all three!). We were psyched about the improvements this year — a full time school nurse, a new learning center in the Lower School, a student hangout zone and full-blown iPad program in the Middle School, the cool new Maker Space in the Upper School — just to name a few.
peeps (teachers, students, parents — all!) are a special breed. We know each other, we care about each other, we celebrate each other, we support each other. Working on the 125th Anniversary celebration three years ago made me appreciate our historic roots as one of the oldest institutions of our kind in California. Head-Royce has always been a beacon of academic excellence and financial stability, and I have complete confidence that it will continue as such for the next 125 years. My Annual Fund gift is one way that I can tangibly support this lasting legacy.
Also, I have come to appreciate that Head-Royce is not only a great school but also a big family. Head-Royce

PROFILE IN GIVING
Richard & Sandra Gilbert
In 2002, Sandra and Richard Gilbert had the great distinction of endowing the first faculty chair at Head-Royce School: The Richard and Sandra Gilbert Family Faculty Chair. Proud parents of alumni Alison ’94 and David ’00, the Gilberts’ generosity inspired several other families to join them in creating a lasting legacy of faculty support. 68 HEAD-ROYCE SCHOOL
What is an endowed faculty chair and how were you inspired to make this generous gift to HeadRoyce School? Our kids had a transformative experience at Head-Royce and we wanted to express our gratitude and provide special recognition to the people we felt made the most critical difference in their education — the teachers. Richard is a retired university professor, where endowed faculty chairs are an important part of a school’s financial model, providing a lasting pool of recruitment and retention funds for top professors. Through philanthropy, a donor creates a permanent fund that is invested by the
school in perpetuity, with the dividend income spent each year on faculty salaries and professional development. In recognition for their generosity, the donor gets to name the fund and receives regular reports on the faculty who receive the honorary chair title. We feel that teachers are our most precious assets and the part of Head-Royce that we felt most inspired to invest in.
We also appreciated that teachers’ professional development was always encouraged at Head-Royce. These resources help attract the best teachers, providing them with career enrichment to further their careers. In turn, this benefits the kids directly, and the school as a whole. We think that funding for professional development is a win-win for the entire school.
During your time as parents, what did you appreciate most about Head-Royce teachers? Sandra was a teacher so we have always felt a special affinity for the teaching craft. From early in our children’s lower school years, we appreciated their teachers’ hard work and dedication. Certain teachers made a lasting impression — a fifth grade teacher who went above and beyond to help students or a biology teacher who had a personal interest in learning differences and brought back tools from conferences to share with the whole school.
We see the endowed faculty chair as a way to give a “shout out” to an exemplary teacher in appreciation for the way they inspire our children and, by extension, the whole community. Now that your children are Head-Royce alumni, what lasting value has HeadRoyce instilled? We feel that our kids got a wonderfully well-rounded education — top-notch academics and social/ emotional learning as well. Head-Royce taught them how to learn which has served them well beyond their years at the school. Our son joked that college felt easy compared to Head-
Royce. He earned a Fulbright scholarship and is now in a PhD program, succeeding academically in large part because of those formative years when Head-Royce teachers taught him how to acquire knowledge. We have very sweet memories of our family’s time at Head-Royce and one of the great highlights was launching the endowed faculty chair program. We remember presenting the concept to the teachers during an afternoon faculty meeting and we were deeply touched by the mutual feeling of gratitude. We feel so privileged to be able to show our appreciation of Head-Royce teachers in this tangible way and are pleased that other families have joined in creating their own chairs. We have a notso-secret wish that someday every single teacher at HeadRoyce will hold an endowed chair. We feel that the teachers are the lasting value of a Head-Royce education.

Patricia Wetmore Berg ’41
2014–2015
Individuals who inform Head-Royce of their intention to make a gift to the school from their estate are invited to become members of the Anna & Josiah Legacy Society. The society honors and gratefully acknowledges the generosity of individuals who include Head-Royce in their estate plans. Many donors can make a more substantial gift to Head-Royce through deferred giving than through an outright contribution. Bequests, large and small, offer a significant source of support to HeadRoyce, and make a lasting contribution to the school.

We are most grateful to the Estate of Patricia Wetmore Berg ’41 for a generous bequest of $150,000 to benefit the HeadRoyce endowment. Patricia, known as “Patsy” in her Anna Head days, was President of the freshman class, President of the drama club in her senior year, and an active member of the glee club. A highlight of her school activities was playing Frederick in Pirates of Penzance. In her adult years, then known as “Trish,” Ms. Wetmore attended Stanford University followed by professional work for an insurance company. She married Colonel Walter Berg, U.S. Air Force, which brought into her life his children Walter “Norse” Jr. and Elizabeth. Trish and Walter enjoyed a quiet life in Carmel, CA and Canterbury Woods. In 1996, Trish became a member of Head-Royce’s Anna & Josiah Legacy Society, a donor club that gratefully acknowledges individuals who include Head-Royce in their estate plans. Trish is survived by Walter W. Berg, Jr. and his wife Eva of Longmont, CO and Elizabeth Sorensen and her husband Paul of Fort Collins, CO. She also leaves behind three grandchildren and five greatgrandchildren. In her obituary, a friend recalled, “One always came away from time with Trish with the feeling of having been in the presence of someone who was real, authentic and bright.”

On January 24, 2015 over 275 members of the Head-Royce community came together in support of our students, faculty and school at the Parents’ Association Auction — The Crustacean Sensation. This lively crab feed featured our own Brendan Blakeley ’88 as emcee, a quiz show, silent auction, live auction, and paddles up. The evening raised over $150,000 in support of special capital projects at Head-Royce, as well as the faculty professional development fund.

Roberta Flack Benefiting Nia
NIA COMMITTEE: back (l-r): Vangeria Harvey, Tamila Copeland, Erica Dennings, Angela Robinson Piñon; front (l-r): Barbara Gee, Roberta Flack, Kindle Barkus.
2014–2015
The Nia Endowed Scholarship Fund was created in 2003 by four mothers with the goal of providing tuition assistance for students of color at Head-Royce School. To date, the fund has received over $200,000 in donations and these scholarships have made a tremendous impact on the lives of many HeadRoyce students. In addition, the group founded an annual speaker series open to the Head-Royce and greater Oakland communities. Nia is the Swahili word meaning purpose. Nia encourages us to look within ourselves and set goals that are beneficial to the community. In 2015, the 12th installment of the Nia Speaker of Color Series was a very special one! Grammy Award-winning artist Roberta Flack graciously donated the first performance of her west coast tour to Head-Royce School. Ms. Flack is Godmother to Head-Royce 6th grader Kira Koga-Eisenhauer and has long appreciated the school’s academic excellence and commitment to diversity. On February 2, 2015, Ms. Flack performed to a sold-out show of 400 guests at Yoshi’s Oakland, with net proceeds supporting the Nia Endowed Scholarship Fund. A special thank you to Nia volunteers for making the evening a great success.
