Welcome to the 38th annual Figawi event. Early indications of entrants are very encouraging. Despite the economic environment, that greatly affected regattas in the South, it appears we will have, once again, a sell-out. We ask your cooperation in helping us to adhere to the rules and regulations of the Town of Nantucket regarding trash disposal. In your skipper’s information you will find a detailed explanation of the procedure to follow and bags that you can use. ust a years back, we revived an exciting old Figawi tradition: The Figawi Team Race. Each year, we have over 20 teams competing for the Jeffrey Carter Foster Figawi Team Trophy. The trophy is dedicated to the yachtsman who initiated and spirited team racing throughout the eighties with the hotly-contested Marblehead Hyannis series.

n Sunday May 25th, 2008, the Figawi Committee, in conjunction with Nantucket Community Sailing hosted the 9th Annual Figawi High School Invitational. The Invitational, a brainchild of former Figawi chairman, Howard Penn, and Nantucket Boat Basin director, George Basset, is a high school regatta sponsored by Nantucket Community Sailing, Nantucket Harbor Fuel, the Nantucket Boat Basin, the Nantucket Yacht Club, and the Figawi Charities Committee to promote high school sailing in the Cape and Islands. The goal of the regatta is for high school students to have a fun, competitive, and rewarding day of racing. Competitors include not only some of the best sailors from each school, but also sailors who have shown a great commitment to their teams and teammates and are chosen by their coaches because of their sportsmanship and hard work. In its ninth year, the event attracted is largest turnout, as twelve crews representing ten schools from the Cape and Islands League battled it out to see who would be this year’s Figawi champion.
the way to fourth-place finishes since each team had the same number of firsts, seconds, and thirds. Nauset’s Neil Drake and Tess McCarthy, with Coach Warren Silver won the scoring tiebreaker. Martha’s Vineyard’s Connor Lodge and Emily Reich with Coach Andrew Burke were second, and Harwich’s Peter Sawyer, Gillian Smith and Tim Adams with Coach Jon Dickson were third. Following racing, the sailors, race committee, and volunteers all adjourned to the Anglers Club for the annual barbecue before the awards. As has become tradition, the awards ceremony for the Figawi High School Invitational lead off the “main event” Figawi race awards. Each competitor and coach received a participation award donated by Nantucket Harbor Fuel.They were presented by invitational co-founder George Bassett of the Nantucket Boat Basin. The event has become a great sailing community event as many groups from the Cape and Islands come together to make it possible. The 2009 Invitational will be the 10th Anniversary of the regatta and we look to have all twelve Cape and Islands teams participate. Racing will start around 11:30 AM and the course is set up just off the entrance to the Nantucket Boat Basin so come down to the docks and cheer on your favorite Cape and Islands team.

For most teams, the Invitational is the highlight of the season as they get to compete in front of crowds of spectators who line the Nantucket Boat Basin docks to witness the action. Sailing conditions were almost perfect on Sunday as the teams competed in winds ranging from 5-10 knots out of the northwest. The competition was extremely tight and going into the last race four teams had a shot at winning the regatta. After the spray settled from the last race Martha’s Vineyard and Nauset were still tied for first with 25 points. The tie-breaker went all

atthew M. Schulz’s love for the outdoors began at an early age venturing afield with his grandfather John B. Farrington (1925-2008). From October through January they would enjoy the traditions of waterfowling, opening each season on the Kennebec River and closing it with late season black ducks on the Barnstable salt marshes.

he inspiration for Blue Water Return came from the return leg of the 2008 race. As many people will remember there was an enormous tail wind and the sea action was crazy. But what really struck me was the color in and on the water. The water this time of year is very clear and with the right light it explodes with iridescent greens and blues. With that in mind choosing the featured boat was actually quite easy. As the Mya moved up through the field it automatically stood out with its huge dramatic sails and blue hull smashing through the heavy seas as compared with a field of mostly white hulled boats. In terms of the composition, I had several working versions, which made making a decision as to which to paint very difficult. One version had an additional boat Indian Summer in the near foreground with it’s wake going back as the Mya approaches, which became far too busy for this scale. So instead, I chose to include the top of a wake in the foreground and the wake produced by Indian Summer, which creates tension and movement by alluding to additional boats off canvas. The decreasing size of Summer’s Off Two, the Spinnaker boat and the ferry establish relative scale and bring the eye full circle. - MS
These early experiences became the driving force behind his artistic expression. Painting which began as a narrow interest, revolving around Wildlife Art and Duck Stamps, has since evolved into an ever broadening passion for the landscape. Matthew cites the great paintings of Frederic E. Church and Albert Bierstadt as being very influential, as well as contemporary artists such as Joseph P. McGurl, Robert Bateman and the late Paco Young. Matthew’s paintings of wildlife and sporting art have garnered awards in Massachusetts, New Jersey and North Carolina. While his paintings of the landscape have been part of both solo and group juried exhibitions including the Boston’s Copley Society, Cahoon Museum of American Art, Leigh Yawkey Woodson Museum, Mystic Maritime Gallery, and the Salmagundi Club.

After graduating from the University of New Hampshire in 2001 with a B.A. in Studio Art, Matthew opened THE SCHULZ GALLERY in May of 2002. An important feature to his design was the incorporation of a functioning studio in the midst of a traditional gallery.

This trophy was created in memory of Pamela Trussell Duggan, a member of Figawi’s Board of Governors and a friend to everyone she met, whose untimely passing in February, 1989, is still felt by all who knew Pam. The trophy is presented to an individual who has demonstrated an outstanding contribution to the Figawi Race and is inscribed as follows: “In memory of Pamela Trussell Duggan, May 7, 1958 – February 14, 1989. On friendship – People who have warm friends are happier and healthier than those who have none. A single, real friend is a treasure worth more than gold. Money can buy many things, good and evil. All the wealth in the world cannot buy you a friend or pay you for the loss of one. G. D. Prentice.”

meat wagon”. He was always funny, always upbeat, and became a not-half-bad sailor in the process. His glibness, if not his sailing references, won him a berth on the maxi circuit where he found himself sitting on the rail with one of European Royalty’s stars. The “star” turned out to be as regular as anyone on board, more than willing to carry his load of the important duties, and those less so. If there is a lesson, I suppose, one of the many reasons to go sailing is that chances are that the guy or lass on the rail next to you has proven themselves to be a decent sort, one that you can rely on, and one with whom you could become a good friend. That’s been my experience and I am sure many of you share the same conclusion.
This year has also provided lots of opportunity for reflection, especially among those of us who have done this race for so long. It is great to see that Joe O’Laughlin’s crew on Tabu, now extending to a fourth generation, is back again! Such is the allure of this great event! Among so many of the “regulars”, it is gratifying to see folks back for their 20th or 30th Figawi, along with their adult kids and heirs apparent. And for those new to the Race, thanks for helping continue Which leads me to observe that we’d all be honored this great tradition. and one that has been a good friend to all of us, whether or not we have ever had the honor to say hello directly. In his day job, he has passionately advocated for all of us. In his leisure time, he has shared our collective love for things of the sea and for the beauty of Nantucket Sound. And for this event and its charitable arm that we call “Figawi”. You and your family are in our thoughts and prayers, Senator. Finally, the battle to save Nantucket Sound continues. Despite press reports to the contrary, the battle has just now been joined and “We have not yet begun to fight.” This year, and next, we will finally see unbiased judges having the opportunity to weigh in on a variety of legal issues at the heart of this fight. Indeed, several recent appellate cases have been decided that give strong support to the Cape Wind opposition. More than ever, the Alliance to Protect Nantucket Sound deserves and needs your support. Nantucket waters are among a few remaining on the East Coast that contain commercial and residential populations of oysters, clams, quahogs, and cold water scallops. t’s always fun for the Figawi Ball Committee to hear the ‘WOW!’ when the first timers walk into the ball room. Other charities attempted to copy it. What is the magic that makes this event so successful annually? Two things come to mind:
And I know one other answer, too, to that ‘magic’ question – If you’ve attended, take yourself to the closest mirror and look at yourself. You are part of magic that has made this event what it’s become. This single fantastic annual night happens because you bought a ticket, and supported the raffle, the silent auction, and the gaming tables. All these provide the dollars that support the countless requests we get for funds to help many worthy groups on the Cape. I am laughing a lot but I can’t remember why! Daniel Patrick Moynihan’s operational backstop of Was it something I had done, or forgotten to do? plausible deniability seems to have escaped my grasp, if Was it something I had said? Was it someone else who not my understanding. had reached his somewhat stoic funny bone? You see, I was at a Dunkin’ Donuts in New Hampshire recently and my alleged good friend, who is only a few months younger than me, joined me. I sported for the cost of two medium regulars, paid the young lady behind the counter, and began chatting with my friend while the wizards behind the counter performed their magic elixir. Suddenly, my good friend started laughing loudly, an outburst somewhat uncharacteristic for a nuclear engineer from New Jersey, for that is what he claims to be.
Only then did I notice a lot of activity on the digital register display. It was spinning inexplicably and uncontrollably. What I had missed and what my buddy had spotted was the beginnings of my first, dreaded, unsolicited, senior citizen discount! When I realized that it had been not only extended to me, but was in the process of execution, I started laughing. I turned to the young lass who no doubt thought she was doing me a favor and I mimicked, “For me?” “Really?” “Are you kidding?” She wasn’t.

Shock and embarrassment resulted in uncontrolled laughter, then followed by the bends, tears, more and louder laughter, joined by the damsel behind the counter, joined yet again by some of the patronage who had fathomed my unfathomable fear. I had crossed the threshold. And my younger friend from New Jersey – just what the hell has he got to laugh about with that heritage – laughed all the louder! “Pocket the money and stop complaining”, he said. A typical damn Republican, I thought to myself. All of which has brought on a wave of nostalgia and reminds me of one of the great poems penned by one of our founders, the late John Scott. It’s worth repeating in full as a true “classic”.

He always tried to figure the tide, “In east; out west? That’s right!” But someone would say in the course of the day, “Take a left. That’s Cape Poge light!” What could Phoenicians, Tahitians and Grecians know That I don’t about navigation? Well maybe there’s something, ’cause on one day trips, They rarely faced starvation. As my old Russian Grandmother used to say With a grin from cheek to cheek, “If you’re going away, even just for a day. “Always take bread for a week.” Then the answer came back, the plan of attack, For locating lovely Nantucket. Just kill some time, then fall in line Behind Thorfinn, and just say, “”The heck with it.” Whenever he got there it was well worth the trip, The scene on the dock was a beaut, Right down to the playing of “Love’s Old Sweet Song” On some very unusual flutes. “Swing Low Sweet Chariot,” “Becky and Jake,” A lovely young girl from the Pole, “Lucky, Lucky, Lucky” and Hernando Gomez All rattled around in his soul. There were noted attorneys, and doctors and Pols, Moguls and even Emcees, Teachers and brokers and pediatricians And proponents of Chucky Cheese. Well-cappers in busses, ladies no one discusses And wise-acres peddling carts, Restaurant owners in tresses, pulling guards in pink dresses And art directors in carts. There were boats in sight, to the left and the right, As far as the eye could see, And Russell and Buzzy tied up side by side To breed a Frers twenty-three. Lou Lou and Finn, side by side, snuggled in, And Anduril stuck in the mud. As he thought of those days through a brown Mt. Gay Haze These pictures came back like a flood.
