The 2009 FIGAWI TEAM RACE WINNERS
ifteen years ago now, we revived an exciting old Figawi tradition: The Figawi Team Race. Each year, we have over 20 teams competing for the Jeffrey Carter Foster Figawi Team Trophy. The trophy is dedicated to the yachtsman who initiated and spirited team racing throughout the eighties with the hotlycontested Marblehead Hyannis series. Last year the Over The Hill Gang proved they weren’t!... Skipper Scott Bearse (Slide Rule) finished first in class to lead the team. Bill Marsh (Ruse) and Bill Abbott (Encore) added their third and fifth finishes to bring up the total. Often the race is close. But this year ‘The Gang’ had a substantial lead over the field. Congratulations! Come on, make a team. Join up with two other skippers and put together a three boat team to represent your club, harbor, sailing association, hometown, or geographic region. It’s an extra ‘side bet’ – a special competition among the competitors.... You, too, could become famous by winning the Annual Figawi Team Race.
GET YOUR SHIPS TOGETHER! Enter the Figawi-Team Race Competition. Bring Victory, Honor, Fame and a very nice trophy to your Club, Harbor and Hometown!

2009 Winners: 1. Bishop Stang
This year’s regatta will be as large as ever, as all the teams in the Cape and Islands League have committed to make the regatta. Spectators can best witness the action from the Boat Basin docks.

O
n Sunday morning, while all the “big boat” sailors were sleeping in and taking a well deserved day off from competition, eleven of the twelve teams that comprise the Cape and Islands High School Sailing League retraced the”big boat” sailors steps as they traveled across Nantucket Sound on the Steamship Fast Ferry. (The Vineyard sailors flew over on Cape Air) Their destination: Nantucket Island, to battle it out in the Tenth Annual Figawi High School Invitational. The goal of this regatta is for high school students to have a fun, competitive, and rewarding day of racing and competitors include not only some of the best sailors from each school, but also sailors who have shown a great commitment to their teams and teammates and are chosen by their coach’s for their sportsmanship and hard work.
The teams rotate boats after each race and can sail up to 12 races or until the 2:30 PM time limit is reached. This year competitors saw a broad range of conditions ranging from 8-18 knots, including a brief moment when the fog rolled in creating a “Smokey Sou’wester,” challenging the Race Committee and competitors alike. The teams sailed eleven races on a windward leeward course that put them through the paces as the puffs rolled down from over the town’s landscape to create a truly challenging day of racing. Bishop Stang’s Jake Denney and Kyle Carney won the 2009 Invitational with eight total first place finishes, including four straight to finish off the day. Barnstable’s Patrick Meade and Andrea Liptack, with Coach Andrew Nunges came in second. Dennis-Yarmouth’s Jay Boyle and Liz Glivinski were third and Dartmouth’s Bud Barry and Peter Seguin were fourth. Up until race eight this year’s version of the regatta was one of the closest with the top four teams all within four points of each. At this point Bishop Stang’s crew ran off four straight bullets to completely change the landscape of the regatta and clinch the victory.
The Invitational was the brainchild of former Figawi chairman Howard Penn, Nantucket Boat Basin director George Bassett, and Nantucket Community Sailing’s executive director Nick Judson, and it is intended to promote high school sailing on the Cape and Islands. Over the years, Figawi Charities has been a strong supporter of these teams, helping to fund many of these programs in their early years. For most teams, the Invitational is the highlight of the season as they get to compete in front of crowds of spectators who line the Nantucket Boat Basin docks to witness the action. In its tenth year, and for the first time ever, the Invitational attracted all twelve Cape and Islands League schools. The crews sail in twelve Club 420’s loaned to the regatta by Nantucket Community Sailing and the Nantucket Yacht Club. Each team can enter one crew of two sailors who are allowed to switch back and forth as skippers.
Following the races the teams adjourned to the Anglers Club for the annual cookout before proceeding to the “main event” tent where the Invitational awards are the first trophy’s given out at the official Figawi Awards Ceremony. Each competitor received a participation award supplied by Vineyard Vines and the top three crews received keeper trophy’s sponsored by Nantucket Harbor Fuel. In addition, all three teams will have their names engraved on the Figawi High School Invitational perpetual trophy which is a reduced scale version of the actual Figawi trophy. For those that want to watch this year’s action in person, racing will start around 11:30 AM and the course is set up just off the entrance to the Nantucket Boat Basin so come down to the docks and cheer on your favorite Cape and Islands team. The 2010 Invitational will be the 11th Annual and we look forward to hosting all twelve Cape and Islands teams in what has truly become a Nantucket Island and Figawi tradition. Nick Judson

“Spirit of The Race Figawi 2010” 20 x 30 • Oil on Panel
Cape Cod, Massachusetts Harwich artist Russell Vujs (B. 1969) is a Signature Member of the American Society of Marine Artists. His work has appeared in many national and local publications such as American Art Collector, Cape Cod Life and an eleven page feature article in American Artist’s Workshop Magazine in the Summer 2009 issue.
Russell’s philosophy is based on a strong belief in plein air painting. He says “The greatest education on painting I get are the hours I spend in the field with my easel observing and recording the natural world.” He takes these experiences back to the studio which help him create a natural sense of light. In the studio he is then free to spend more time exploring the subtle nuances of a scene more deeply.
Russell graduated with honors from the Connecticut Institute of Art in , 1991 where he studied commercial art. Not able to fmd work, he turned to his first love – oil painting. He won his first award the “Presidents Choice award” from the Greenwich Art Society in Greenwich Connecticut and had his first solo exhibition from the Stamford Art Association in Stamford, Connecticut.
Not one to produce a lot of paintings and unwilling to send out work that does not meet his high standards, Russell limits himself exclusively to three galleries on Cape Cod (listed below). His work can also be seen on the web (www.russellvujs.com).
Russell Vujs, ASMA
At the age of twenty-two Russell made the first of three instructional videos for the Double Diamond Corp. These videos cover watercolor painting, pen and ink drawing and airbrush painting, and can be found in middle schools through college libraries across the country. Besides instructional videos he has taught classes and workshops for the American Society of Marine Artists, the Cape Cod Art Association and the Cultural Center of Cape Cod.

F I G A W I The Original Figawi Trophy Donated by Baxter’s Boathouse in 1973, the pewter wine decanter was used for years to toast the winner with champagne. It is on display at Baxter’s, at Hyannis Inner Harbor.
The Figawi Race Trophy Designed by silversmith Neil Terkelson of West Barnstable, and generously donated by Guertin Brothers Jewelers of Hyannis in 1987, it reflects Figawi’s status as one of the East Coast’s major sailing events. Its design reflects a sailboat hard on the wind on an arc of silver representing Nantucket Sound. It is on permanent display at the Captain’s Table, Hyannis Yacht Club.
THE FIGAWI RACE TROPHY
The Special Recognition Trophy
This trophy was created in memory of Pamela Trussell Duggan, a member of Figawi’s Board of Governors and a friend to everyone she met, whose untimely passing in February, 1989, is still felt by all who knew Pam. The trophy is presented to an individual who has demonstrated an outstanding contribution to the Figawi Race and is inscribed as follows: “In memory of Pamela Trussell Duggan, May 7, 1958 – February 14, 1989. On friendship – People who have warm friends are happier and healthier than those who have none. A single, real friend is a treasure worth more than gold. Money can buy many things, good and evil. All the wealth in the world cannot buy you a friend or pay you for the loss of one. G. D. Prentice.”

FIGAWI ‘10

Figawi 2010 welcomes you to the 39th edition! Can you believe it, darling? To paraphrase Al Cotoia’s famous New York tailor joke (come to the joke session and we’ll refresh you!), toity-nine years, in dhis business, at dhis location, you cross that finish line and we know all about you! Half of you are regulars; for the half that isn’t, we predict that you will catch the bug and be back soon. In any event, we are, as always, thrilled to have you aboard.
and for Figawi Charities are deserving of our thanks but beyond that, it seems that there are a host of lessons to be learned from his life and death that directly relate to all of us as sailors and participants in this event. For example, in the many eulogies and remembrances of our neighbor from Hyannis Port, it quickly became apparent that sailing, the sea, and Nantucket Sound itself were not only great sources of inspiration and peace for him, but also a metaphor for life, its challenges, and rewards. Those are each literal and figurative lessons that should not be lost on any of us.
W A G I F It’s always interesting to talk with first-timers and regulars every year on Sunday night and to have them tell you what a hoot the weekend has been and how much they have enjoyed themselves. What is even more enjoyable is to meet up with folks who, when I first met them, were newbies but who have just completed their third, fifth, or fifteenth personal edition of the race. Better yet, when they introduce me to friends, relatives, and kids who are now regulars in the event, it tells me that we are doing something right and it demonstrates the community that the sailing, racing, the ocean, and friends re-create every time this event is run.
Indeed, one of our regulars, a stalwart skipper known to us all as Ted Kennedy, crossed the bar last August. His support for this race

As it was common to see so many Kennedy’s aboard Mya at the starting line off Hyannis Port, it is not at all unusual to see third and even fourth generation family participants from all walks of life racing on boats alongside Mya, the four generations of the O’Laughlin clan aboard Tabu coming right to mind. And certainly the great friendships that have

I suppose the Gentleman from at the Kennedy Library, which can and must be seen on YouTube Hyannis Port would agree that the Mt. Gay tastes even better if the and other resources, the Senator – who, in the finest Irish tradition, S.O.B. in your wake has an “R” after the name! helped plan his own wake – penned a comment in the program book, Which brings me to the latest update on the Cape Wind saga. “It is our responsibility to live in our time — not to look back to the As I write this, we await a decision from the Commonwealth’s receding shore, but to sail ahead in hope, remembering whence we highest Court while a decision from the Secretary of the Interior came, cherishing the values we carry with us, searching out the newer issued today and approved the project. While we do not know how and better world which is the next destination and discovery of the those issues will eventually play out, it is clear that the battle to American journey.” save Nantucket Sound is far from over. I am not at all sure that he acquired that wisdom during a Figawi That said, Ted Kennedy was not a “NIMBY”. He knew that Race, but who knows? I am relatively sure that spending a lifetime this project presents a clear and imminent danger to the flying messing around in boats on Nantucket Sound probably did have some public, to the historic interests on the Sound and on shore, and connection to that truism and his view of life. Perhaps if the entire to the tourism that is the economic engine that drives the Cape Congress could spend a summer racing with mixed crews aboard and Islands economy. We can all learn from Kennedy’s thoughtful sailboats in Nantucket Sound, we would all be better for it. Maybe we’ll opposition to this project. The take away from these “May those who love us, love us. observations is that Ted Kennedy loved to do what we all love to do, And those who don’t love us, to be on the ocean with family and friends, laughing and leaving the may God turn their hearts. point is that every Sunday morning before and after surgery, Howard’s phone would ring. Betty Penn would answer and invariably hear the booming voice of Ted Kennedy asking for Howard, speaking with Senator Kennedy’s well-known love of the him for some time, asking how he could be of help, sea and his intense sense of competition brought and just being a friend that we all would hope for him to the annual Figawi Race for many years in time of crisis. In another example, on Red Sox opening day aboard his beloved schooner ‘Mya’. He was an excellent sailor in his own right, having won his in 2009, Ted could be seen on T.V. chatting up a division on two occasions and whether or not storm on the cell phone. Being told that one of Conhe won, he was always in the hunt. We enjoyed gressman Bill Delahunt’s most loyal, long-serving seeing him spending important time doing some- assistants and friends was gravely ill, Ted called thing he loved to do, that is, being on the water from the stands to say hello, wish her well, and to with friends and family and, as he would often tell her that he was thinking of her. As sick as she say, being refreshed by Nantucket Sound and was, she couldn’t wait to tell everyone about THE CALL. She died seven days later, yet another victhe sea. Many were lucky enough to call him tim of breast cancer. Husband, father, son, brother, friend, senator, neighbor. And, oh yes, competitor, skipper of Mya, Figawi regular, and a damn good sailor. These are some descriptions that come readily to mind as we remember Ted Kennedy.
“friend”, and a good friend he was. Figawi Chairman Emeritus Howard Penn and “The Senator” go back a long way. A few years ago, Howard was gravely ill in Florida, awaiting a liver transplant. (Howard will tell you to be sure that you register as an organ donor and to let your family know of your intentions, Ed.) Howard received his transplant and had a wonderful recovery but the
Ted’s passing was followed by a classic Irish wake at the Kennedy Library in Dorchester. His family, friends, and colleagues told story upon story of the man and what made him tick. Especially memorable was Senator John Culver’s hilarious monolog reciting his harrowing crossing of Nantucket Sound as a neophyte sailor with his Harvard classmate who with some justification he labeled

“Captain Ahab”. Culver’s story, for any of us who love sailing and the sea, was priceless. Google “Kennedy Irish Wake” and enjoy the heartfelt tribute, the hilarious stories, and the personal reflections that were offered in his memory. At the wake and in commentary thereafter, a constant theme emerged, that is, the metaphorical role that sailing and the sea played in Ted Kennedy’s life. In Kennedy’s own words taken from acclaimed historian Ken Burns’ wonderful video tribute to Ted at the 2008 Democratic National Convention, Kennedy is heard to say: “The sea for me has always been a metaphor for life. The sea is a constantly evolving, changing, shifting aspect of both nature and life. That sort of exposure to the sea is both enriching, and enhancing, and fun.” Of the many things that we all share with Ted Kennedy, surely our love of sailing, the sea, and the peace that it brings to all of us are prominent on the list. On behalf of the Figawi Board of Governors and the thousands of participants in this annual sailing event, we wish to express our profound sorrow and condolences to Mrs. Victoria Kennedy and the entire Kennedy family on the passing of the Senator.
Mya
A wonderful allegory was offered in 1989 at the funeral of beloved Figawi Board Member Pam Duggan and it has such application to Ted’s life and passing that we are honored to share it with you. The story is told of the beloved member of an Irish sea-faring community who was re-locating to America. The entire community gathered on the shore to see him set sail. As his ship headed west towards the horizon, it became smaller and smaller and the locals noted, with profound sadness, “There he goes, there he goes, he’s gone.” But on the western shore, family and locals who had preceded him had been alerted to his impending trip. As they spotted his ship coming over the horizon, it grew larger and larger and they noted with joy, “He’s coming, he’s coming, he’s here.” No matter what one’s politics, we are all better for having had Ted Kennedy in our lives, and though we are so saddened by his loss, we are exceptionally grateful for his life and his friendship. The Navy signals the highest compliment that can be paid by hoisting international code flags Bravo and Zulu for “Well done.” For the sailing community of his friends, neighbors, and competitors, we say “Bravo Zulu,” Ted. Godspeed.

The 24th Annual Figawi Charity Ball
“TIME PASSES... BUT MEMORIES LAST FOREVER.”
he Figawi Ball committee has been working on change to bring new and exciting venues to the this years event that is now celebrating it’s 24th year of having raised millions of dollars for various Cape Cod charities. Figawi, through the Charity Ball and now Singing Santas, continues to support worthy Cape Cod organizations. It is not for everyone – you must want to have fun, play at the Casino provided by our local Yarmouth Figawi Charity Ball Committee and Hyannis Chambers of Commerce, shop at the silent auction with Cape Cod neighbors, and bid on the over 100 items from sports tickets to jewelry to great restaurants. So loosen up your purse strings to support many local needy organizations. A must see is the spectacular cover art of our Figawi program book this year, donated by artist Russell Vujs from Harwich. The Ball brings us glitter and glamour (OH YEA)! It’s dress up time on the Cape. Dancing’s non stop. It’s bebopping, two-stepping and jitterbugging on the crowded dance floor, where you’ll literally bump into old friends you haven’t seen for a while. It’s social networking and camaraderie: The music by two fabulous bands, our old favorite “Soul Sound Review”, and Bostons Best “Dick and Jane” will strike up at 7PM to beLEFT TO RIGHT: FRONT ROW: Donna Jason, Chris Standish, Rebecca Story, Ellen Zavatsky. gin the festivities. The 24th Annual Figawi Charity Ball “TIME PASSES... BUT MEMORIES LAST FOREVER.”
CONTINUED from page 31 featuring many wonderful delicacies. Among the restaurants providing cuisines are Spanky’s Famous Figawi Raw Bar, The Paddock, Captains Table, Captain Parkers Pub, Not Your Average Joe’s, TGIF, The Island Merchant, Embargo and Montilio’s. Want to get away from the busy ballroom? We have lighter entertainment with the Cape Cod Conservatory Jazz Band in the rooms adjoining the ball room. This event just doesn’t happen and would not go on without the dedication of co-chairs Rebecca Story and Chris Standish and the many committee volunteers that work tirelessly all year to make the ball the best it can be. Please give them a nod of thanks as you party through the night. Most of all, for those of you that frequent the Ball, and those first year virgins the ball committee and Figawi Board of Governors want to thank you for attending and supporting all this effort for the past 24 years. Without you, the event would not be one of biggest single nights of fundraising on Cape Cod.
Those early revelers of the of the eighties and nineties now have their children attending; We have been blessed with the continued support of the sponsors listed in our program that have stayed with us over the years. A major thank you to the Hyannis Resort and Conference Center management for staying with us and providing so many amenities making the night go smoothly. It is a special feeling for those of us who have been around since the beginning. Don’t forget, it is nobody’s fault but your own if you don’t have a good time. How could you not - the committee has planned it that way. Have a great Time! Next week the RACE WEEKEND! Leo Fein, President, Figawi Charities

Welcome to Nantucket Waters. Enjoy them and protect them.
Nantucket waters are among a few remaining on the East Coast that contain commercial and residential populations of oysters, clams, quahogs, and cold water scallops. Therefore, we must be diligent in our attempt to MITIGATE all manor of pollution. Surfactants (soaps and detergents) exhibit toxicity towards marine life and water quality. We must limit the amount of surfactants entering into the water column. Local bylaws prohibit the discharge of gray water. We ask that you MITIGATE, as much as possible, the gray water that enters Nantucket waters. Nantucket Boat Basin has a facility with 18 bathrooms and showers located amongst the three main wharfs. We encourage you to use these onshore facilities.

The great Groucho Marks said it best, “I wouldn’t belong to any club that would have me as a member.” For 364 days a year, your hosts, the quasi-esteemed members of the Band of Angels, spend an inordinate amount of time denying that they are indeed members. The denials have many motivations (retention of spouse, employment, and clients among them, and in no particular order) and include a wide variety of presentations, including, “ You’re confusing me with my twin brother, idiot!” to “What is your silence worth?” Each is an ultimately futile, desperate attempt to deny the undeniable. Bad deeds do not go unpunished.
In any event, I received an e-mail from an anonymous correspondent wanting to know if a friend could apply for membership in the Band. My first reaction was, “Why?” Then, I thought it important to recount our early tradition for vetting new members. We would meet at a local restaurant, polish off more than a few Mt. Gay’s, wolf an overpriced dinner, and adjourn en masse to the men’s room. There, names of prospective new members would be offered, the quality and frequency of their renditions evaluated, and most importantly, their ability and willingness to pick up our tab for the dinner would be calculated. If the nominee met the qualifications, and

they weren’t a complete ass, we would call them (from the payphone, this being way, way before cell phones), and invite them over. On arrival, the wait staff would give them our bill; only when it was paid would we welcome them to membership. The point is, you must demonstrate your prowess, perhaps repeatedly over a period of years, and then be invited to join. Forget this application foolishness. This IS an exclusive club, you know. It also might be helpful to recount the pre-qualification process as told by one of our founders, Jeff Foster, several years ago:

When one walks into the tent on Sunday morning at 10:00 AM, what will transpire is totally predictable, as well as completely unacceptable. There will be a group of men and women with hangovers suitable for framing, serving you a delightful, but adventuresome champagne, free of charge. It comes from a very secret vineyard, just west of Paramus, N.J., and it is chilled to perfection in a container made especially for the event by the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company (affectionately known as the “A & P” for those too young to know which is most of you, Ed.). CONTINUED from page 35 At exactly 10:00 AM someone will step up to the microphone, greet you, explain the rules one more time, and read a letter from the Selectmen who traditionally find something offensive in last year’s performances to chide us about. From that moment until 11:45, you, the audience, are free to come to the stage and tell your best joke. Now, this is important so pay attention. We do not discriminate; if you haven’t been offended, be patient. You are free, even encouraged, to express yourself as we do not exercise editorial control over presentations. Periodically during the session, a “Band of Angels” member will journey down memory lane by telling a “classic”. All proper reverence should be given these tales, followed by howls of insane laughter. By doing this you assure yourself of free champagne for yet one more year. So here is your chance to see just how really good you are. Not some office party, lampshade wearing, heard it from the bartender joke. Can you best the best? Can you bring them to tears? For example, this is a joke that the Selectmen actually approved this year in advance. You see, Sven died and his wife, Helga, met with the undertaker who asked, “What do you want in the obituary?” Helga, being cheap and knowing that the obituary was priced by the word, told the undertaker to put in, “Sven died.” The undertaker told her that she actually would get the first six words for free. She thought for a moment, turned to the undertaker and dictated, “Sven died. His boat’s for sale.” And so it was. Let the games begin!
