Always Remember
“I have never been able to think of the day as one of mourning; I have never quite been able to feel that half-masted flags were appropriate on Decoration Day. I have rather felt that the flag should be at the peak, because those whose dying we commemorate rejoiced in seeing it where their valor placed it. We honor them in a joyous, thankful, triumphant commemoration of what they did.” – Benjamin Harrison
WHENEVER YOU HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY, THANK OUR SERVICEMEN AND WOMEN AND THEIR FAMILIES FOR THEIR GREAT SACRIFICE AND SERVICE TO OUR COUNTRY.

Welcome Sailors!
40 years. We all know the early beginnings of Figawi. Over the years, the tales of yesteryear have been a mixture of folklore and truth. My involvement with the Race Weekend began in 1975 aboard the boat Invincible, a Cal 20, with John Linehan and my brother, Barry. The Monday of that weekend there was gale winds. John, Barry, and I decided to sail to Hyannis, despite the conditions, as everyone else hunkered down and continued the revelry in the boat basin. Howard Penn pleaded with us to stay in the basin but we decided to give it a go. It was an unforgettable and exciting “Nantucket Sleigh Ride” and I have never missed a year since then.
Nantucket also has rules about trash disposal and recycling, for example, there are no black trash bags allowed. Please help us and the environment by using the recycling bins on the docks, use only non-toxic cleaning products on your boat, and use only water when washing your boat in the basin. Please check the literature included in your packet for more information on how you can help. We are also using the GPS services of Kattack Performance race tracking. Your fans can watch the racing live on Kattack.com and it is a great tool for the Race Committee to help ensure safety for all our entrants on the Sound. We are glad you are here. This is great event, carried on through the years by the passion and dedication of so many people and the friendship with Nantucket and its residents. Please enjoy Nantucket’s great restaurants, shop Main Street, and remember we are guests in their home.
This year the Board of Governors has made a commitment to the Sailors for the Sea Clean Regattas certification program. It is a voluntary program to promote awareness for ocean conservation and to strive to achieve higher environmental standards in regattas. Check out their website at sailorsforthesea.org.
Fair winds and calm seas to all our competitors on our 40th Anniversary,

elcome to our landmark 40th Figawi! You will be seeing a little red in this, our special Figawi Collector Edition, Official Program. It’s our ‘Ruby’ Anniversary. This is our biggest and best ‘book’ ever! Thanks for all the wonderful memories, adventures and friendships that you have helped create over these forty years. And, if you are new to Figawi, just you wait.... I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all our wonderful sponsors and advertisers, whose help and support make it all possible. Especially those loyal sponsors that have been with us since early on. We cannot thank them enough. I hope you will all patronize their services. Without them, and you the participants and volunteers (for both race weekend and the ball), there would be no Figawi. This year, I’d like to dedicate the ‘book’ to Fred Boden, who passed away in March. He was the ‘founder’ of the Official Program back in 1984, and ran the show here with great dedication through

1991. We all miss him. Special thanks to all those contributors who sent us personal pictures and stories to make this a very special “Ruby” edition. We hope you will all consider sending us your favorite adventures and photos for next year. We’ll put up a special page on the website with contributor information. I’d also like to thank a few more people: Dick Vecchione (our designer from the beginning through 2003, including our logos), Britt Crosby (our official photographer extraordinaire for 9 years and counting), Ed O’Neill before him, Bill Thauer (our current designer since 2004, who also has supplied some great photos), and Ken O’Brien (our printer most years since the beginning). All have been creative, trusted and reliable vendors for all these years. Have a safe race and fun weekend!

erome Howes was born May 25, 1955, a thirteenth generation Cape Codder. His father was a paintings and antiques dealer in Brewster who specialized in marine paintings and artifacts and had an extensive private collection of 19th century ship portraits, both sail and steam. Howes grew up with a deep appreciation of the American painting tradition, and especially the marine tradition. Largely self-taught, in 1994 Howes devoted himself to painting and quickly gained a name and a following on his native Cape Cod, and Nantucket and the Vineyard. Howes currently divides his time between the rural landscape of Vermont, where he lives with his wife and three daughters, and Cape Cod.

Designed by silversmith Neil Terkelson of West Barnstable, and generously donated by Guertin Brothers Jewelers of Hyannis in 1987, it reflects Figawi’s status as one of the East Coast’s major sailing events. Its design reflects a sailboat hard on the wind on an arc of silver representing Nantucket Sound. It is on permanent display at the Captain’s Table, Hyannis Yacht Club.
THE FIGAWI RACE TROPHY
The Special Recognition Trophy
This trophy was created in memory of Pamela Trussell Duggan, a member of Figawi’s Board of Governors and a friend to everyone she met, whose untimely passing in February, 1989, is still felt by all who knew Pam. The trophy is presented to an individual who has demonstrated an outstanding contribution to the Figawi Race and is inscribed as follows: “In memory of Pamela Trussell Duggan, May 7, 1958 – February 14, 1989. On friendship – People who have warm friends are happier and healthier than those who have none. A single, real friend is a treasure worth more than gold. Money can buy many things, good and evil. All the wealth in the world cannot buy you a friend or pay you for the loss of one. G. D. Prentice.”

How To Win The Figawi. Yachting
0

by Jeff Foster Reprinted from the 1990 Program. We all miss Jeff’s great stories and articles though the years.
articles always can be divided into two categories: How to (Cruising) and How To (Racing). Leaving such stimulating subjects as: “How to wash down your deck” “Cooking boiled cabbage without a pan,: and “Cotter pins” to my fellow journalists, I shall give you the secrets of winning Figawi. Lest you think I am some novice, I have lost all 15 Figawis I have entered. I have learned by my mistakes.
1.
Get your entry in early, since there are a limited number or entrants, you may block out a really good competitor from racing. 2. The proper crew is critical. Do not bring experts. First, they always differ on strategy and choices invite errors. Secondly, the race is 4 hours long compared to 3 days of parties. Which is more important? 3. Always attend the Skipper’s Meeting. There you can find out where the Pros are gathering that evening. Go to the gathering and buy them lots of drinks. Pros hate hangovers. 4. Disguise your boat. Do not look racey. The secret is for everyone not to worry about you. If the experts think you are fast, they will do mean things like take your wind or luff you up. Hang towels off of the boom, leave your bumpers over the side on the way to the start, and ask everyone you see if you can borrow a chart. 5. Never get to the start early. John Osmond has won more Figawis than anyone, and he is never on time. 6. Listen to the weather forecast. It is never right, but it gives you a built-in excuse if you lose. 7. Be sure the men on the crew are dressed in tight shorts and the women in skimpy bikinis. If the competitors are watching you, they are not watching their own sails, but more importantly you will freeeze and that is the best incentive to go fast and get to Nantucket in a hurry. 8. Only bring one suit of sails. Changing sails is far slower (and wetter: than the wrong sail. Bring only that combination that you expect to cross the finish line with. 9. Do not blast the stereo on the way to the starting line. Only boats with hired hands do that, and hired hands mean you are an expert. Be inconspicuous. 10. Crew position while racing is paramount to victory. Never stack them all on the weather rail, but rather all gather in the cockpit to be seen knitting or reading a book. Remember, yacht racing is moments of stark terror sandwiched in between cocktail parties. These hints may not guarantee victory on the race course, but you will have more fun, and I think that is what Figawi is all about.
Figawi has made a commitment to the Clean Regattas program. Please check out their website: sailorsforthesea.org.

Welcome to Nantucket Waters. Enjoy them and protect them.
Nantucket waters are among a few remaining on the East Coast that contain commercial and residential populations of oysters, clams, quahogs, and cold water scallops. Therefore, we must be diligent in our attempt to MITIGATE all manor of pollution. Surfactants (soaps and detergents) exhibit toxicity towards marine life and water quality. We must limit the amount of surfactants entering into the water column. Local bylaws prohibit the discharge of gray water. We ask that you MITIGATE, as much as possible, the gray water that enters Nantucket waters. Nantucket Boat Basin has a facility with 18 bathrooms and showers located amongst the three main wharfs. We encourage you to use these onshore facilities.

A few years back, we revived an exciting old Figawi tradition: The Figawi Team Race. Each year, we have over 20 teams competing for the Jeffrey Carter Foster Figawi Team Trophy. The trophy is dedicated to the yachtsman who initiated and spirited team racing throughout the eighties with the hotly-contested Marblehead Hyannis series. The race is always very close. So make it an extra ‘side bet’ – a special competition among the competitors. Come on, make a team. Join up with two other skippers, and put together a three-boat team to represent your sailing association, club, harbor or hometown, or geographic region. You, too, could be way famous by winning the Annual Figawi Team Race.
Enter the Figawi-Team Race Competition. Bring Victory, Honor and Fame to your Club, Harbor and Hometown! The Figawi Foster Team Trophy will be presented at the Figawi Awards Ceremony on Nantucket. Attractive keeper prizes for each team skipper will be awarded. And the winning team members names will be inscribed on the permanent Jeffrey Carter Foster Figawi Team Trophy. Sponsored by

NEW for 2011. The eZ/21 Daysailer……The easily handled keelboat with the beautiful lines of an instant classic. The idea behind the eZ/21 was to create a spirit of tradition daysailer that could be easily hauled and trailered while maintaining the sailing characteristics of a true keelboat. Above the waterline is a beautiful design with classic lines. Below the waterline is a modern (lifting) bulb keel that goes from a sailing draft of 4-feet to less than 12” for hauling. The eZ/21 also features twin rudders for better control while keeping draft to a minimum for ease in hauling The eZ/21 is about ease of sailing as well. The self-tending jib comes standard with the NEW below-deck Harken roller-furling system and a recessed traveler. We kept the mainsheet out of the cockpit, but led it to both sides featuring a continuous mainsheet to keep it simple. The lifting keel, twin rudders, a generous array of standard features, and yacht quality construction, highlighted by just the right amount of teak, make the eZ/21 the most unique daysailer on the market. Call us to arrange a test sail today.

A Highlight From The (Distant!) Past by Al Cotoia

he awards party was held upstairs at the Capt. Tobeys Restaurant. After devouring various food items, and sucking down a few cocktails, all retired to the downstairs bar to continue the festivities. antagonistic toward yours truly. A minor scuffle erupted, and the local ended up with Carl Poulter (remember him?...) sitting on his chest strongly suggesting he behave and have some fun. A short time later, some local implied that the Silver Fox was really a ‘foxette’ (actually called him a ”silver-haired fag”). Have any of you ever seen Mt. Sinai erupt? – that’s our Howard! The fight spilled out onto the street – the police arrived – the local was taken away – we went back to having a good time – and have been for twenty years following. Little did we envision what the event would grow into. The prize for that race was a Revere Bowl – which we filled three or four times with Black Russians. It was a memorable event. The Moby Dick was later sold – last we heard she was retired to a condom!

The 39th Race Last Year...

Figawi At Forty! W
Thanks For The Memories...
elcome! Welcome! Forty-Welcomes! Against all odds, we are here, we are healthy, and we continue to grow! A lark turned into a dream, the dream turned into reality, and the reality’s success is beyond our wildest expectations. Thank you all for being here. Thank you all for your support over the years. Simply, thank you for joining us in celebrating this wonderful event we call FIGAWI! We are thrilled you are here! We estimate that perhaps 60,000 or more sailors and friends have partaken in this event over the years. We are beginning to see elements of the fourth generation of families on the rail at the starting line. We quietly embrace the joy - and it is that - which brings so many back to this race year after year; we equally rejoice at the high-fives and thank-you’s from so many new-comers as they leave the tent after Sunday night’s last dance. Not half bad, as the saying goes. The Board operates the Race more or less on autopilot these days since everyone knows and performs their job so well. It’s a far cry from the midnight debates in the 70’s at Hyannis’ old Asa Bearse House when a group of

W A G I F dedicated and enthusiastic type-A’s wrestled to build a vibrant model from a host of valid, and often differing and conflicting visions. A special thanks and acknowledgment go out to so many on the original and early Boards who put so much time into building a race weekend model that has been so successful to date. These include Bob Horan, Jacquie Newson, Howard Penn, Dennis Sullivan, Joe Hoffman, Brian Olander, Fred Boden, Fred Ellis, Fred Scudder, and long-serving current members John Osmond and Tony Prizzi. We also note with gratitude the wonderful contributions of Bob Adomunes, David Wilbur, Tom Duggan, Debbie Newson, Shirley Enz, and Marie Boyd. And of course, we remember and miss so much our beloved Pam Duggan, in whose memory the Special Recognition Trophy was created. Without their collective and individual efforts and vision, we wonder if the 40th would be upon us. No mention of Figawi’s history would be complete if I didn’t also mention the names of a sampling of our sailors who have supported us for so many years. DiMattia, Scott Bearse, the O’Laughlin Clan, Brad Pease, Don Henderson, Bob Rozene, Pat Callahan and his girls, and the Downey Clan come readily to mind. As well, Win Carter, Bob Ferguson, Stan Moore, Neil Tomkinson, Tom Leach, Paul Tetreault, Barry Sturgis, Ted Kennedy, Peter Soule, Greg Kelly, Bill Riley, Halsey Herreshoff, Doug Halstead, the Hamlyn Clan, and Don Liptack are a few of the stalwarts who have regularly raided the trophy chest and helped build this race. Let me hasten to mention only a few of the regular volunteers whom my fading neurons bring to mind, and without whom this race simply would not happen. With profuse apologies to those I will certainly miss, a huge thanks go to Keith Sexton, Ellyn Osmond, Beth Duggan, Floyd Silvia, Randy Wallin, Roger Newson, Jack Stockhaus, Wayne Oheme, Kellie Hicks, Rebecca Story, Mitch McCabe, Katie Crawford, Patti and David Nurse, Mackenzie Nurse, Louise Orpin, Ellen Zavatsky, Annie Richardson, Randy Carlson, Charlie Zahigian, Scott Condinho, and Bob Morrill. friends and hosts on the Island. It’s no secret that Nantucket today is not the Nantucket of 1972. And yet year after year, islanders have opened their arms to us, welcomed us, and helped us create memories for several generations who continue to return to the Island year after year, in season and off. The Board regularly implores our participants to remember that we are guests at someone’s home, and to act accordingly. To the great credit of virtually all of our participants, our pleas have been heard; and for those who haven’t, well, we hope that you enjoy your weekend, wherever you are. But to our friends and supporters on Nantucket, a heartfelt and inadequate “Thank you.” My evil twin brother, for whom I make so many excuses, and because of whom I am not welcome in so many fine establishments, is emblematic of the widespread popularity of this Race. As you may know, we have a revival session every Sunday morning on Race Weekend, where stories of tribulation, romance, and adventure are shared. My twin often recounts stories of foreign adventure with the assembled throng and so it was that your scribe was sitting in the Denver airport in 1989. I detected a presence in my space as I read my

book at 0630; I looked up and saw a complete stranger of notable pulchritude, awaiting eye contact. As soon as (eye) contact was made, she stood at ridged attention and snapped the finest, open-handed British military salute. “Sergeant Major”, she bellowed, “Are you ready for inspection?” This, of course, is the punch line of one of the more memorable revival characters whose identity has been assumed by my twin. The moral of this snippet is, simply, that the tentacles of this 40-year tradition reach far and wide, across many miles, oceans, and generations. All to our immeasurable delight and pleasure! And we have only just begun! Bravo Zulu, gang. Spread the word that the 50th is fast approaching and it’s not too early to register!
I Pulled Out Late In 2010... by Ed Sargent full Itpower was a wild morning... getting out the channel under at about 1.5 knots. Finally
outside the starting circle we tested our sail combination. Main up – we new we needed a reef, so we throttled back and tied in a reef. Then out with the 135 – still too much sail... We rolled it up but didn’t like the set, so we pulled it out and tied in reef #2. Just then our club mate came by and ordered us to strike the burgee. This was our first Figawi – glad to have his veteran IMAGINE advice. Finally with double reef and 135, we were just in control. Time flew by. By the time we were comfortable, it was time to enter the starting circle. Running the line and ducking behind boats we hardened up, I jumped down to leeward and drove the boat over the line within seconds of our start time. Settling into the beat, I immediately noticed the faint sound. Was that the engine? I flashed at the throttle. It was all the way back at idle, then at the shift, damn! I threw the engine out of gear. We were a couple of boat lengths over the line. Damn! I shut it down. I looked behind to see who may have noticed. Feeling that the error had made little or no difference on the effectiveness of our start, I kept sailing.... As the race progressed, we found ourselves sailing on our club mate Helios. For some reason most of the other competitors had fallen off to leeward. Trusting Charley we held high as we headed for the windward turning mark. We snuck around right behind Freya who helped us judge the swift current setting us toward the mark. Around we went right on Freya’s heels....
We shook out the first reef. Imagine was sailing beautifully. Only a couple of boats had passed us, none from our class. We kept up speed and were incredulous that the entire fleet was still behind us as we hardened up around the turning mark and headed for the finish. The larger boats were gaining and passing us one by one, but we held high to maintain our air as much as possible. Before we knew it we were at the finish. Only about fifteen to twenty boats finished before us. We got a gun. This was much more than we had ever expected in our first outing. That night the results were posted Imagine had in fact come in first in our division. We all celebrated. Sunday morning I awoke before dawn. The thought accepting an award for a race in which I had started with the engine on weighed heavily on my mind. Minutes seemed like hours but I gradually realized what I must do. I called my brother up on deck and explained my dilemma. At first he argued that it was un-necessary but realizing my resolve he heartily agreed. Do it!, he said. I explained to my mate that I was going ashore. I wanted to go alone. It was a solemn row ashore. My voice shook a little as I asked to speak to the race committee chairman. But in I went. I have to withdraw I said. Why? he asked. I had my engine on at the start. Was it in gear? he asked. Uh huh, I responded. My withdrawal was official. I walked away... straight down the dock... a tear came to my eye as I faced the fact that I must admit to my crew and to all, that victory was not to be... But I felt sure that I had done the right thing and that we would all sleep better for it. At the awards ceremony Peter was kind enough to have me rise to acknowledge my action. Saying that it was not until some time later that he realized I had withdrawn from first place. The crowd overwhelmingly supported my actions with many acknowledging that they had made similar mistakes in the past. This is what our sport is all about Peter said. I’m glad to be a part of it.

years ago the Figawi Charity Ball began its unheralded run to being one of the most successful nights of fund raising on the Cape. What is the magic that makes this event so successful annually? First a little history... The brain child of Joe Hoffman, a former Figawi board member, wanted to soften the reputation of the Figawi sailboat race that maybe wasn’t making the board members or participants proud as it should have. Joe sold the idea of a charity ball to his fellow board members. A black-tie affair on the Cape. Neat! So off it went. Think back to 1986, with memories of Dennis Sullivan, Skip Scudder and other board members on ladders hanging decorations at the old Cape Codder, under the watchful eyes of Sue Fein and Felicia Penn. These two ladies spent time gathering beach grass for decorations and hiding from anyone passing. They still laugh about it. Tickets were only sold to those who would attend. Food was donated from the surrounding restaurants and cooked and served by the hotel staff, all donated by the generosity of its manager Allen Kronberg. Flowers were donated by many local florists. John Salerno’s Big Band Sound was CONTINUED on page 43

hired. The raffle and casino were introduced as money makers for the first charity recipient the YMCA – Remember they were building their pool back then. Joe had to magically find a dance floor on the Cape on the day of the event as the hotel’s was too small. I remember the smell of mothballs in the air that night as not many folks had worn a tux or fancy dresses in so long that they had to dig them out of their attics. And that first year ticket price: $10. Well folks that was the beginning of this event that has grown in stature and reputation to be a really fun and satisfying night. But how has it lasted this long you say?... And how does all this happen you ask?... Extraordinary Volunteers Part of the magic, I mean besides the finest of food, entertainment, gambling, and flat out fun... And a silent auction beyond compare, and a raffle, too, with odds that guarantee you will take something home at a greater value than the ticket you bought... is the very dedicated volunteers who plan and man this great event. These folks make all the hundreds of phone calls of solicitation for donations of auction & raffle items…pick up the 200 items donated… arrange the event… decorate…select the entertainment…put
together the tickets and promotional materials … sell the tickets… get the raffle items to the people that won… brain storm year after year to improve the event with new ideas, and how to raise more money for local charities. These are the real reasons The Figawi Charity Ball has become the event it has over the last 25 years. So, congratulations to Chris Standish and Rebecca Story, the co-chairs, and their all-volunteer team for their tremendous effort and direction. It’s been a great ride these past 25 years and we thank you all from the bottom of our heart for all you do, without you there wouldn’t be a Ball. And remember, every cent raised from the Ball goes to local Cape Cod charities. To date, over three million dollars has been raised to benefit 150 local charities. We are proud of helping build, the pediatric wing at Cape Cod Hospital, a suite in the Mugar Tower, Children’s play area at RHCI, The Brewster Riding Academy, a play yard at Children’s Cove, and of making contributions to after Prom Parties on the Cape, and the list goes on.... So help us keep giving to the community – come back every year! Leo Fein

Photos are color-coded so you know who took which shot: Brit Crosby: BLUE Blake Jackson : PURPLE Bill Thauer: RED Ed O’Neil: YELLOW
Our official Figawi photographer, Britt Crosby, is an all-around guy. He like action, and shooting from higher vantage points. Our Marblehead connection, Blake Jackson, the most experienced regatta shooter of the bunch, prefers to be out on the edge. While Bill Thauer, our program book designer, has an experienced art director’s eye for nice lines and fluid shapes. He favors shooting straight into an oncoming boat at the waterline. And our, now retired, previous shooter, Ed O’Neill, like classic lines and ‘portrait views’ of the boats. But they all have one thing in common They love shooting Figawi! Along For The Ride...
My First And only Figawi Win In 2009
Thirty years ago I used to fly Coast Guard airplanes over the Sound, and I noticed all the sailboats in the race. Recently I started thinking that it would be a great idea to participate. It’s a great event, and I wanted to bring my son out and enjoy some time together.
By dumb luck, we crossed the starting line within two minutes of our start time. We just kept following everyone else. Thirty minutes into the race it appeared that everyone was headed 20 degrees to the left of the course. The course that year was a straight line to the One day, after breakfast, the novice boater that I Island. After scratching my head for awhile I could not am, I acknowledged to myself that I had no chance of figure out why everyone was headed 20 degs to the left winning or even being competitive aboard Kayla, my of the course.... Oh, and did I tell you, the wind was blowing 20kts I’ve been day sailing for 40 years. I only raced a couple 90 degrees to our beam, and my Gozzard 44 only sails of times as a kid in the community boating program on (at least for me) at max speed when the wind is 90 the Charles River when I was 12 or 13 . Whenever I raced degrees on the beam!
I came in last, so I concluded I sucked at racing and As we crossied the finish line (BTW we had no never raced again until my son talked me into doing the clue it was the finish line), a USCG 110 cutter was coming out of the harbor, and someone fired a shotgun. 2009 Figawi. Our strategy was – One: “Don’t hit anyone.” We were I assumed we’d done something wrong. Then one of in my 2 year old Gozzard that is affectionally referred to the crew members said maybe that’s a signal that we as “the boat that never leaves the dock”. And strategy won. We all laughed! Needless to say we won Division Two: “Follow everyone else.” I was the only crew mem- L! Only slightly askew...
by Charlie McLaughlin As oft mentioned, those of us in the Band of Angels are usually grateful for some semblance of anonymity following our annual misguided adventures on stage. We remain hopeful that family, friends, employers, and especially grandchildren will not soon hear of our island indiscretions. However, I now must share some, but not all, of the truths about a dear friend and member of the Band whom we lost in January, Loralee Strauss. I was asked by her great husband Gordon to offer a eulogy at her funeral and to focus on her humor. As one can well imagine, I was considerably challenged to capture the spirit of Loralee in a church setting, while keeping a weather eye out for the inevitable lighting bolts I was sure would strike somewhere in mid-remembrance. Here follows bits of the eulogy. I first met Loralee and Gordon when we were at a restaurant on the Cape, getting ready to sail (IE: drinking) on the night before the Marion-Bermuda Race aboard Don Payzants’ beautiful 54’

We lost an Angel. But thinking of her stories and shenanigans will always bring a smile.... Little Harbor “Troubadour”. This pint of peanuts sticks out her hand and says, “Hi. I’m Loralee Strauss.” Gordon, never far behind, thank goodness – and always at her side - immediately followed. “Hi”, says Gordon, “I’m Gordon Strauss and Don Payzant tells me that you are on my watch for the trip.” I thought first to myself, gee, I’d rather she was on my watch!
My wife Nancy was the lucky one. While the crew of Troubadour slogged their way 630 miles south in challenging conditions, ducking the wildly swinging Irish crystal, and hanging on to the piano for dear life, Sandie Payzant, Nancy, Loralee, Gretchen Strauss (now Payzant – indeed, good things do happen at Figawi), and cousin Liz, made their way to the island. Whereupon, and as evidenced by the charge card receipts, they cut a wide swath wreaking havoc and generally bolstering the economy. And so Loralee entered our lives and became like a sorority sister to my wife Nancy.
In any event, fueled with suitable rations of the beer of the day, Loralee proceeded to give us a monolog of some of the funniest original jokes that I have ever heard and now can’t remember. You Thereafter, Gordon and Loralee know the problem; they say the second thing to go is your memory and you can’t came to the Cape when Bill and Gretchen Payzant lived there and they so enjoyed remember the first. the birth of their grandchildren, and who I quickly learned two things that wouldn’t with those gorgeous kids. And night. One, Loralee and Gordon were when they would visit, we would have Republicans! (Note to file: tighten up some time with all of them and it was just on security!) Secondly, contrary to great to see the joy in the faces of both of everything I had been taught, I learned these grandparents. If the grandkids only that Republicans really can be fun. knew the depravity of the little woman No, really. And they became two of my changing their diapers! favorite Republicans. But I digress.

We spent a week with them in the winter of 2002 on Culebra eating cheeseburgers. And more cheeseburgers. And watching the Patriots famous “snow bowl” game, in balmy breezes at 10 P.M. Ah, Culebra, where we went to opening night at a brand new restaurant and where the local teenage waiter opened his first bottle of wine, taking 20 minutes to do so, then offering it as a fine bottle of shar-doenay! Later, 2004 found us in the Virgin Islands aboard the mighty catamaran “Bob” – who on earth would name their boat Bob anyway? And at Norman Island, we had a truly unforgettable, if deniable, visit to another mighty ship, the Willie T., where a young bride proudly flashed her expensive enhancements. (Note to file: she got her money’s worth!) And we frequently enjoyed their great company at Nantucket on weekends when we participated in the events of that unmentionable three-day sailing race held annually over Memorial Day weekend. Which brings us to question, what, you may ask, - and rightfully so - is “The Band of Angels” that was so prominently mentioned in Loralee’s obituary? As Groucho Marks put it so succinctly, he would not belong to a club that would

have him as a member. The Band of Angels is precisely one of those clubs. The Band, as it is affectionately known, is a group of talented, funny, and shameless joke tellers who participate annually in that unnamed sailboat race. The rules of membership are two. First, one must tell a really good joke; delivery is at least as important as content, for it is the telling of the joke that truly sets one apart. Secondly, once nominated, the nominee must pay for dinner. Once the credit card is accepted for payment, the deal is done. Yet in finest Republican tradition, Loralee always claimed to be in transit from – God help us – New Jersey and so avoided the dinner payment thing. Much to Gordon’s delight! (Note to file: be sure to bill Gordon.)

Rachael rocking on the front porch, and the story of “THE CONTEST” brought the crowd to their feet and immediately won her membership in the Band. Could she make us laugh! Whether the quick quip or the marathon joke told to perfection with the finest foreign accent, she was simply superb. Truly, she was a classic. The Band’s Founder, John Scott, was right; it is the telling of the joke that sets the great ones apart. And Loralee was one of the greats.
What a gift is the talent to bring about laughter! Laughter breaks the ice. It eases tension. It lowers blood pressure. It brings people together. It creates wonderful memories. It makes for great friendships In any event, fortified with ample that transcend time and distance. The courage-makers in the form of cheap famous American Irish song, “When Irish champagne and OJ, Loralee cut her teeth Eyes Are Smiling” has the line, “In the lilt on Nantucket in front of the gathered of Irish laughter, you can hear the Angels throng numbering at least 1,000. And sing.” I suggest to you that the Irish don’t what a hit she was. Stories of the mood have a monopoly on laughter, as Gordon’s party hosted by Oprah and Stedman, “Little Angel” obviously touched all of us with Loralee wearing an afro 3 feet in and our hearts with her humor. diameter, the reminiscences of Sarah and

CONTINUED from page 61 I know that we are all struck by our collective loss. But I offer something that I humbly hope will be of some help to all of us when we leave this church. A wonderful allegory was offered at the funeral of a beloved Board Member of that unnamed Memorial Day Race who died very young and suddenly and I suggest that it has such application to Loralee’s life and passing. The story is told of the beloved member of a sea-faring community who was re-locating to America a century ago. The entire community gathered on the shore to see her set sail. As her ship headed west towards the horizon, it became smaller and smaller and the locals and family noted, with profound sadness, “There she goes, there she goes, she’s gone.” But on the western shore, family and locals who had preceded her had been alerted to her impending trip. As they spotted her ship coming over the horizon, it grew larger and larger and they noted with joy, “She’s coming, she’s coming, she’s here.” And in Loralee’s case, they laughed.
Loralee’s strength and humor. So laugh. Laugh a lot. And when you laugh, think of Loralee for surely she is laughing with us. Which reminds me of the story. Sven and Heidi had lived for years on the shores of Lake Michigan, in Wisconsin of course. Sven died. Heidi was sitting with the funeral director making arrangements and they came to the subject of the obituary. Heidi was, shall we say, cheap. The funeral director told her that the local newspaper would publish a small obituary for free and asked what she’d like published. Heidi thought for a minute and answered, “Sven died.” After a moment of silence, the director told Heidi that she actually
would get the first six words of the obit for free. She thought for a minute and then said to the funeral director, “Try this: Sven died. His Boat’s for sale.” And so it was. We traditionally finish up the joke session with “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot”. This year, remember to sing the following at the appropriate time, “A Band of Angels, led by Loralee, coming for to carry me home.” Good-bye dear friend. Charlie McLaughlin
We are all sailing on this same journey together and, as we know all too well, it’s a short one. Loralee had the gift of time and made the most of it and was truly at peace when we lost her, with Gordon once again at her side. Learn from

ver dinner on our first date, I mentioned to Barbara that I was doing a sailing race from Hyannis to Nantucket, 2 weekends hence. “Oh, you’re doing Figawi?” Yes, I was doing Figawi. As I had for years. “How about you?” I asked. “Do you have a ride.” No, she had other plans. So I did Figawi again, as a single guy, on the new J/109 I’d bought with my brother. But she was on my mind that weekend. As I was on hers (as I later found out). One thing led to another, and by the middle of that summer, we were a couple. We later compared Figawi memorobilia. She had a tee shirt and I had a red hat from 1997. I’d done the event that year, and every year since, as skipper of my old C&C 29. She’d sailed on a friend’s Wianno Senior. In some of the subsequent years, she raced, some years
she took the ferry and somehow gotten tent tickets (I don’t want to know how!) and some years she missed. We decided our paths had crossed in the tent at least a few times in those years, but we never met. Too bad. In that time, we’d each kissed our share of frogs, and each had a bad relationship or two. The following year, we raced Figawi together. And it turned out that it’s more fun to be in the Figawi tent when you’re with a “significant other” who’s into it, than it is to be in the tent hunting. Five years ago this weekend, after the joke telling session, we took a walk to Brant Point. I had an agenda which she hadn’t figured out. It was a fitting time and place to propose. Two years later, we sailed our first Figawi together as husband and wife.
Todd Bairstow and Susan Graham (and friends).
We have been diligently racing the last 7 years and while facts are irrelevant, we have won every single race. Or at least that’s what every lady in the tent has been told. This year is a special trip since our ringleader, Todd Bairstow, is tying the knot up in Boston at the Aquarium. The big day is 6/24. We are going to have a ‘pre-celebration’ at Figawi 40 for him and his bride, Susan Graham. Sounds like a plan. Or does it?... Susan (and other family members) have never been to a Figawi Weekend!... Woe is us!.... And what will they say - Matt Murphy about his trademarked ‘fro’?...

n Sunday morning, while all the “big boat” sailors were sleeping in and taking a well deserved day off from competition, all twelve teams that comprise the Cape and Islands High School Sailing League battled it out in the Eleventh Annual Figawi High School Invitational. The goal of this regatta is for high school students to have a fun, competitive, and rewarding day of racing and competitors include not only some of the best sailors from each school, but also sailors who have shown a great commitment to their teams and teammates and are chosen by their coach’s for their sportsmanship and hard work. The Invitational was the brainchild of former Figawi chairman Howard Penn, Nantucket Boat Basin director George Bassett, and former Nantucket Community Sailing executive director Nick Judson, and it is intended to promote high school sailing on the Cape and Islands. Over the years, Figawi Charities has been a strong supporter of these teams, helping to fund many of these programs in their early years. For most teams, the Invitational is the highlight of the season as they get to compete in front of crowds of spectators who line the Nantucket Boat Basin docks to witness the action. In its eleventh year the Invitational attracted all twelve Cape and Islands league schools. The crews sail in twelve Club 420’s loaned to the regatta by Nantucket Community Sailing and the Nantucket Yacht Club. Each team can enter one crew of two sailors who are allowed to switch back and forth as skippers. The teams rotate boats after each race and can sail up to 12 races or until the 2:30 PM time limit is reached.
TATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL INVI 2010 Participants
This year competitor’s saw near perfect conditions and eleven races were held in breezes ranging from 5-12 knots out of the Northwest. The boats sailed windward leeward courses right off the Nantucket Boat Basin docks where Figawi “Big Boat” sailors, tired from a busy day of racing on Saturday, were able to sit back and cheer on some of the best high school sailors from the Cape and Islands. The teams battled it out all day and going into the second to last race five teams had a shot at being crowned the 11th Annual Figawi Invitational champion. Dartmouth’s Calib Armstrong and Bridget Murphy outlasted the group with six firsts and only one bad race, followed by Dennis-Yarmouth’s Kelsey Lotti and Elizabeth Glivinsky, and then Nantucket’s own Adam Ceely and Jesse Lang. Following the races the teams adjourned to the Anglers Club for the annual cookout before proceeding to the “main event” tent where the Invitational awards are the first trophy’s given out at the official Figawi Awards Ceremony. Each competitor received a participation award supplied by Vineyard Vines and the top three crews received keeper trophys sponsored by Nantucket Harbor Fuel. In addition, all three teams will have their names engraved on the Figawi High School Invitational perpetual trophy. Please come to watch this year’s action in person, racing will start around 11:30 AM and the course is set up just off the entrance to the Nantucket Boat Basin so come down to the docks and cheer on your favorite Cape and Islands team. The 2011 Invitational will be the twelfth annual, and we look forward to hosting all twelve Cape and Islands teams in what has truly become a Nantucket Island and Figawi tradition. Nick Judson
