2012 Figawi Race Weekend prese nted by
Dear Participants, Unfortunately, this past year we lost several people who made significant contributions to the success of Figawi Race Weekend. More specifically, Diane Panesis, Scotty Peatie, Win Carter and Chairman Emeritus Howard K. Penn. Howard’s impact on our event was immeasurable. Earlier this year despite his illness, he reminded me of several tasks that needed to be completed at that time. He truly cared about Figawi. In his honor we have selected a very special burgee memorializing his involvement. We will miss you Howard. Sail On! I hope all of you have a wonderful weekend on this beautiful island with such gracious hosts, the residents. Lastly, the town fathers have requested that I remind you, the sailors, that black trash bags are banned in Nantucket. Enjoy,
J. David Crawford F igawi C hairman

Cape Cod Artist
Marjorie Mellor Photo shows Marjorie with a nine week old black bear cub in Colorado when she was a Wildlife Deputy with the Park County Sheriff Dept.
Reeling in the “E’s ”
25in by 37.5in acrylic/multi-medium on canvas
M
The painting is an illustration of the last leg of a sailboat race, as she comes around the point headed for the finish line at the harbor’s edge. The “E’s” represent “Excellence” in finishing the race in first place.
arjorie Mellor, a native of New York, has been a resident of Massachusetts for over forty years. With a couple stints in California, Texas and Colorado in there too. She is an R.I.T. grad with a long background in art direction and many aspects of design and art, including publishing, museum display design and media. She has worked with companies with such as Walter Reed Hospital, Digital Equipment Corp., Rand McNally Corp. (where she was a Caldicott Medal winner for excellence in Illustration), Eastman Kodak, and and the Boston Museum of Science.
she has volunteered her time and double expertise for the Cape Wildlife Center and the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History. And she has donated her artwork to causes on the Cape, such as Centerville Library, Figawi Charities (for going on ten years!), and town beautification committees.
”
After her ‘official’ retirement, she has found time to devote to two more of her passions – painting and wildlife. She has spent time as a Wildlife Deputy and an EMT in Colorado. Here on the Cape,

Please Protect Our Beautiful Waters...
K IMPORTANT – PLEASE READ IMMEDIATELY! K
Welcome to Nantucket Waters. Enjoy them and protect them.
Nantucket waters are among a few remaining on the East Coast that contain commercial and residential populations of oysters, clams, quahogs, and cold water scallops. Therefore, we must be diligent in our attempt to MITIGATE all manor of pollution. Surfactants (soaps and detergents) exhibit toxicity towards marine life and water quality. We must limit the amount of surfactants entering into the water column. Local bylaws prohibit the discharge of gray water. We ask that you MITIGATE, as much as possible, the gray water that enters Nantucket waters. Nantucket Boat Basin has a facility with 18 bathrooms and showers located amongst the three main wharfs. We encourage you to use these onshore facilities. Remember Nantucket now prohibits the use of black plastic trash bags.
Please BE A RESPONSIBLE FIGAWI PARTICIPANT. Thanks. 9

In Memorium The “Silver Fox”
Howard K. Penn
E
1931-2 012
veryone knew him as the “Silver Fox”. With instantly recognizable silver-gray hair, his involvement with numerous organizations in Hyannis and around the Cape, and his visibility as a co-owner of Puritan Clothing Company, Howard was always, simply put, everywhere. It could be said that if Howard Penn didn’t know you, or if you had not had some contact with him, you were probably a very recent wash-ashore. Those close to Howard would also say that not only did he know everybody, but deep in his heart, he also loved everybody. Over the years people would come to him for counsel and advice, for support, for introductions, but mostly because they loved being with him. Once you were included in his multitude of friends, he never forgot you. To all of his friends he was known as “Uncle Howard.” He was, of course, just plain “dad” to his children, Scott, Rick, and Lisa Ann. His ‘adopted’ daughters, Kelly and Kim, called him “papa”, as did his grandchildren. His beloved wife Betty, almost always referred to as “BB” by Howard, was holding his hand as he left this life on March 17th of this year. BB had been at his side for the past 21 years, and constantly for the past 6 years as his caregiver, his support team, his cheerleader, his best friend, and his angel, as Uncle Howard battled to the very end trying to survive. His will to live was immeasurable. Father Mark Hession told Howard just days prior to his death that “it was okay to let go; that his friend Ted Kennedy was up there waiting for him with a martini”.
Howard Penn was a part of the Figawi Race from the very beginning. He was there when Bob Horan decided to make the “Fuk-awi” into an annual Memorial Day event. He was there when, in year two, there were five competitors, and in year three, maybe ten. He was the consummate supporter, always promoting the race and the clambake, and involved in every on-shore aspect of this event as it grew and matured into what it is today. He was, it seemed, always on the committee, as Figawi became a “race weekend,” as it crossed the 200-sailboat threshold, as it added the charity ball, and became a premier event on the sailing calendar in the United States. Howard contributed more to the success of Figawi than any other single person. He was not only the “face of Figawi” all these years, he was its very heart and soul. If you need convincing just ask Leo and Sue Fein or John Osmond and Tony Prizzi; ask George Bassett and Milton Salazar, (who told me the day he died that Howard was his very best friend); check with Jacquie Newson, Dennis Sullivan, and Judy Notz; or talk to Charlie McLaughlin and David Crawford. They were there and all of them know that for 40 years he was, and will always be, “Howie Figawi”. There will never be another Howard K. Penn; that is true for those of us who knew him and loved him. He was special in so many ways. We will, of course, miss him and all that he did for us. Figawi was a very big part of Howard’s life, and in a way, his legacy. Take some consolation that he was buried with a Figawi flag and a red Figawi Mt. Gay hat. Joe Hoffman
Godspeed Howard. May the winds be always at your back, and the good Lord hold you in the palm of His hand! 11

F I G A W I The Original Figawi Trophy
Donated by Baxter’s Boathouse In 1973 the tradition began. This pewter wine decanter was used for years to toast the winner with champagne. It’s on display at Baxter’s, at Hyannis Inner Harbor.
The Figawi Race Trophy
ALAN HUDSON
Donated by Guertin Brothers Jewelers Designed by silversmith Neil Terkelson of West Barnstable, and generously donated by Guertin Brothers Jewelers of Hyannis in 1987, it reflects Figawi’s status as one of the East Coast’s major sailing events. Its design reflects a sailboat hard on the wind on an arc of silver representing Nantucket Sound. It is on permanent display at the Captain’s Table, Hyannis Yacht Club.
THE FIGAWI RACE TROPHY
The Special Recognition Trophy
This trophy was created in memory of Pamela Trussell Duggan, a member of Figawi’s Board of Governors and a friend to everyone she met, whose untimely passing in February, 1989, is still felt by all who knew Pam. The trophy is presented to an individual who has demonstrated an outstanding contribution to the Figawi Race and is inscribed as follows: “In memory of Pamela Trussell Duggan, May 7, 1958 – February 14, 1989. On friendship – People who have warm friends are happier and healthier than those who have none. A single, real friend is a treasure worth more than gold. Money can buy many things, good and evil. All the wealth in the world cannot buy you a friend or pay you for the loss of one. G. D. Prentice.”

Teams shall make application, in writing, to the Figawi Race Committee with their race application or any time prior to the close of the Skipper’s Meeting. The sooner you form your team, the better will be your chance for magazine, newspaper, radio and TV notoriety during the prerace hype. In addition, the sooner you form your team, the greater will be your chances of success! E. Team standing shall be determined by the lowest combined score as determined by class place of the three yachts of each team. Ties shall be broken at the discretion of the Competitions Committee. (We cannot be bought!)
A few years back, we revived an exciting old Figawi tradition: The Figawi Team Race. Each year, we have over 20 teams competing for the Jeffrey Carter Foster Figawi Team Trophy. The trophy is dedicated to the yachtsman who initiated and spirited team racing throughout the eighties with the hotly-contested Marblehead Hyannis series. The race is always very close. So make it an extra ‘side bet’ – a special competition among the competitors. Come on, make a team. Join up with two other skippers, and put together a three-boat team to represent your sailing association, club, harbor or hometown, or geographic region. You, too, could be way famous by winning the Annual Figawi Team Race.
Enter the Figawi Team Race Competition. Bring Victory, Honor and Fame to your Club, Harbor and Hometown! The Figawi Jeffrey Carter Foster Team Trophy will be presented at the Figawi Awards Ceremony on Nantucket. Attractive keeper prizes for each team skipper will be awarded. O Figawi High School Invitational Regatta O 2012
THE THIRTEENTH ANNUAL
2012
presented by Atlantis Weathergear
11:30AM
L
ast year on Sunday morning of Figawi Race weekend, while all the “big boat” sailors were sleeping in and taking a well deserved day off from competition, the twelve teams that comprise the Cape and Islands High School Sailing League battled it out in the 12th Annual Figawi High School Invitational. Figawi’s goal for this regatta is for high school students to have a fun, competitive, and rewarding day of racing. Not only are the participants some of the best sailors from their teams, but they are also chosen by their coaches for their commitment to their teams and teammates. Also for their sportsmanship and hard work. The Invitational was the brainchild of former Figawi chairman Howard Penn, Nantucket Boat Basin director George Bassett, and former Nantucket Community Sailing executive director Nic Judson. It is intended to promote high school sailing on the Cape and Islands. Over the years, Figawi Charities has been a strong supporter of these teams and has helped to fund many of them. High school sailing in New England has grown rapidly over the past few years, and nowhere is that more

evident than on the Cape and Islands. Sailing is one of high school sports’ true coed sports, and at the Invitational we see an equal number of male and female participants. The skill level of our teams has grown dramatically over the years as a result of the dedicated coaches and volunteers who have spent countless hours encouraging and guiding our high school sailors. Their commitment does not stop there: they are also great ambassadors for the sport, which is demonstrated by their Corinthian spirit and sportsmanship as some are also competitors in the Figawi Race. The Invitational is one of the highlights of the high school season as teams get to compete in front of crowds of spectators who line the Nantucket Boat Basin docks to witness the action. The crews sail in Club 420’s loaned to Figawi by Nantucket Community Sailing and the Great Harbor Yacht Club. Each team enters one crew of two sailors who are allowed to switch back and forth as skippers. The teams rotate boats after each race, sailing up to 12 races, or until the 2:30 PM time limit is reached.
O
May 27th
Last year’s competitors saw near perfect conditions and ten windward-leeward races were held in breezes ranging from 5-12 knots out of the Northwest. They battled it out all day, and with three races to go six different teams had a 1st place finish and four teams had a shot at being crowned the 12th Annual Figawi Invitational Champion. Nauset’s Duncan Howes and Alexis Mathison stepped it up for the last races of the day putting together two bullets and a third to clinch first place by three points. Second and third place honors were repeat performances from 2010 by Dennis-Yarmouth’s skipper Kelsey Lotti with crew Mariah Kelley and Nantucket’s skipper Adam Cealey with crew Ashley Inglis. Dartmouth and Harwich were tied for fourth with Dartmouth winning the tiebreaker. Following the races the teams adjourned to the Anglers Club for the annual cookout “extraordinaire” before proceeding to the “main event” tent where the Invitational awards kick off the official Figawi Awards Ceremony. Each competitor received a participation award supplied by
Vineyard Vines and the top three crews received Atlantis Weathergear vests and keeper trophies sponsored by Nantucket Harbor Fuel. In addition, all three teams have their names engraved on the Figawi High School Invitational perpetual trophy. For those who want to watch this year’s action, racing will start at 11:30 AM on Sunday, May 27th. The course is set up just off the entrance to the Nantucket Boat Basin. Please come out and support our sailors, coaches, and volunteers as they showcase the talent that will someday compete on the open waters of Nantucket Sound in the “other” Figawi Race. The 2012 Figawi High School Invitational will be presented by Atlantis Weathergear and Vineyard Vines and Nantucket Harbor Fuel are back as sponsors as they have been from the beginning. We look forward to hosting the twelve Cape and Islands teams in what has truly become a Nantucket Island and Figawi tradition. Nic Judson

Let’s Raise A Glass to the “Rooster”… A Brief Memoir... A Long Story...
by Austin O’Brien III the maiden Figawi adventure, laughed and poked at each other’s sailing skills [or lack thereof], and which of their boats was the fastest – the two wooden boats or the newer fiberglass boat.
T
he tale of the Figawi you all have heard starts at Baxter’s Boat House. A group of local Cape Cod sailors testing each other’s ego’s over a few drinks. But actually it really began in the basement bar of my home where a group of close friends (really family) were hanging out. Yes, of course, the next day the conversation and competitiveness of these men did continue at Baxter’s over, yet again, a few more cocktails, however what may be lost in the folklore were the friendships these men had, and the greatness of each and every one of them. I grew up on the Cape in a family that enjoyed the sea, being on the ocean and most of all spending time amongst our closest friends. As a child, I spent most of my summer days with my father cruising up and down Bass River, being educated on the rules of the sea. I learned how important it was to be a strong swimmer, and how lucky I was to be able to live in such an amazing place. During those days on the river, every time our boat came upon the Ship Shops Marina, my father would slow down to take in the sight of an aging sailboat. Silently it sat, tied to its mooring with a chalky red hull, a faded sail cover, and a deck that could use some serious refinishing. On its stern was the quarterboard that read “The Red Rooster.” You see ”Red” Luby had sold the boat many years before. And there it sat. Barely used, and not well taken after. I didn’t understand as a child what my father was doing every time we slowed to view the boat, and I didn’t understand why he would get quiet, and then a bit upset that this piece of ‘history’. Our family history was not being taken care of, and preserved for what it stood for in his heart. Now that I’m a grown man, I certainly grasp what that boat meant to my father – the good times he had, and the memories of friends that this boat stood for. I recently asked my father to speak with me about the Figawi, so I could tell his story. I wanted everyone who read it to understand
These men who were all family to one another, and honestly did not care about who won or lost (okay, maybe they cared just a little...), but cared most about the time they spent on their boats with each other – telling jokes, laughing over a few drinks, and creating friendships that would last a lifetime. Sort of like the Figawi is now...
how important this race was to my family. And even for those who partake in it now. I wanted to hear the story as much as anyone else. Later I realized as I pondered over whether I should pursue writing this piece about the history of Figawi, that it would mean more to the original members and my father to write about what it meant to be a part of the Figawi, than to hear the story Unfortunately, most of the original members are no longer with us, to enjoy with my once again. father each Memorial Day, weekend sailing My father Austin O’Brien Jr. (“OB” to his in the winds of the Sound. For a minute, put aside all the commercial hoopla, the shirts, the hats and the thousands of people who come to be a part of this event every year, and just reflect. Though you are racing and competing, remember that this event was not intended to become anything but a time for friends to get together on their boats while enjoying a ton of laughs and appreciating those with whom you’ve surrounded yourself.

BOAT PHOTOS Memorial Day Weekend 2011 Hyannis To Nantucket
NOTES ON THE 2011 RACE If you weren’t there, 2011 was an exceptional year for the Figawi. Fog was thick on the Sound in the morning necessitating a delayed start. The first boats didn’t start until almost two; the last nearly three. The winds were very light at first, but picked up later on the Sound. After several hours many racers threw in the towel, and started motoring in. The party awaited. Finish times were slow (only four divisions even had finishers - totaling only a dozen and a half!), winners took well over four hours, some even over five hours! Only exception was in the A Class where there were finishers in under four hours – The Natalie J finished in about 3:20. Perhaps there should be an “endurance” trophy?... All this made for some sunset arrivals on the Island. And for some tired sailors... “One of the brightest gems in the New England weather is the dazzling uncertainty of it.” - Mark Twain

elcome, All, to the first Race of the fifth decade of Figawi! Make your reservations now for the 50th! It will be here before the ink on your AARP card is dry! We are so glad you are here and so happy to see that the tradition is alive, healthy, and growing. In Navy bridgewatch parlance, “Make it so.”

It hasn’t been opened yet!” Howard looks at the Rabbi deadpan and answers, “Precisely!” The Rabbi notes at the driver’s funeral, “We set a land speed record to the Cape.” Scene Two: Midnight Mass, Christmas Eve, 1980something. Cute, twenty-five year old blond is standing at the bar. Somewhat older guy with shock of white hair approaches. Without introduction, orders large drinks for both. Introduces self to blond. At age forty-one, almost everyone, save accountants, have developed a personality (Figawi’s and the writer’s accountant being an exception). Question: How can you tell your accountant has a personality? Answer: He stares at your shoes, not at his own! At 41, Figawi is famous for many things, including its “personality”. Besides the destination, the quality of the Race, and the sheer fun of the event, there is no doubt that Figawi’s personality – serious fun and good racing – brings people back year after year, decade after decade, and now generation after generation. How lucky are we all to be part of such an event! And no small part of its personality is attributable to one of its founding

I had previously met him at organizing events for the Cape Cod Ski Club but he didn’t remember me. At the skipper’s meeting, the committee didn’t have enough sponsors for the trophies so Howard grabbed the mic from Dennis Sullivan and began the “auction” where, eventually, I summoned the courage among strangers to sponsor a trophy. I met Howard at the bar, won my division, and have been a friend of his and committed to Figawi ever since. I, and so, so many others, were privileged to call Howard “friend” thereafter. Nothing stays the same, and Figawi is no exception. The regulars return. The newbies come and become regulars. The economy curses all and yet they come,

relieved to see old friends and make new ones. The tent is filled with 40 and 50somethings, the elders get their jollies applying tattoos, the kids of the 40 and 50-somethings now party until whenever, and the Race prospers. Most of the stories stay on-island but enough unsubstantiated rumors leak out that folks in (God forbid) Carmel, Indiana and Mobile, Alabama are among the early registrants. Even folks from the Big Apple need a break, understandably so. I guess we’ll all have to keep doing this until we get a little dingy. In other news, the battle to save Nantucket Sound persists. The DC Circuit Court of Appeals threw out the FAA’s truncated review and summary approval of the Cape Wind project last fall because the FAA did not follow its own rules in analyzing numerous substantial risks to aviation. People fairly ask why Figawi supports opposition to the project. The
simple answer is that the risks of pollution and other environmental damage are dramatic, the electricity will be enormously expensive, and regulators have ignored risk analysis in order to fast-tract the review and approval of this fatally flawed project. Study the subject and support the opposition at www.saveoursound.org. Your financial support is now more important than ever.

hat that means is Figawi Charities, through the Charity Ball continues to support worthy Cape Cod organizations. This year we are supporting The “HyannisYouth and Community Center”. The theme is not for everyone; you must want to have fun with Cape Cod neighbors and loosen up your purse strings to support many local charities. The Ball brings us glitter and glamour (Oh Yea)! It’s dress up time on the Cape. It’s bebopping, two-stepping and jitterbugging on the oh-so-crowded dance floor, where you literally bump into old friends you haven’t seen for a while. It’s social networking and camaraderie. We have a great Las Vegas Style Casino that supports our local Chambers from Hyannis and Yarmouth, a fabulous Silent Auction, and 100-item raffle and that is only the beginning... Raconteur Scotty Peatie passed away in October after a courageous battle with cancer. One could find Scotty at Baxter’s opening almost every year and immediately upon making eye contact with him, his ever-present smile would broaden and a string of entirely new and hilarious material would follow. When he then took time to catch his breath, he would give you a hug, inquire sincerely about you and your family, and promptly launch into more high-grade comedy. It seemed that, no matter how much time had passed since the last opportunity to enjoy his company, he hadn’t lost a beat since his last conversation with you. It is no surprise that the celebration of his life saw several hundred friends from every circle gather to honor him and his best friend and companion, Patty Isenor. He was a member of the Band of Angels where he told his trademarked “Diesel Fit Her” joke for years, as well as many other keepers. Later in life, he was a long-haul boat transporter who became a member of the million mile club on Route 95, or so he said. In truth, the Band thinks that he used his crazy spring schedule to avoid attending the annual Band of Angels dinner where he would surely have been stuck with the tab, if only he had come. Scotty was a caring, decent, funny, and good man. He never had a bad word to say about anyone, except perhaps for an occasional state trooper or two south of the Mason Dixon. I am reminded that his favorite line was, “We’re here for a good time, not a long time.” Scotty made the most of his limited time and made all of us lucky enough to call him a friend better for it. We will miss him greatly. Besides Patty, he leaves his daughter Jennifer, son Robert, and grandchildren Kaylee, Jordan, and Vivian. Donations in his memory may be made to Figawi Charities, P.O. Box 406, West Hyannisport, MA 02672. CHARLIE McLAUGHLIN
Dianna L. Panesis
’ “Calm seas and smooth sailing, Dianna.”
In June of 2011 Figawi lost one of its longest (25 years) volunteers, Dianna L. Panesis, partner of another Figawi volunteer Charles V. Zahigian. Dianna will be remembered more recently as the classy lady who along with Charlie greeted everyone at the VIP tent and worked on the door staff of the main tent. When Dianna became a Figawi volunteer in 1986 she crewed a patrol boat, setup and sold clothing both at the Hyannis Yacht club and on Island plus worked on the door staff. Dianna was always there to do whatever was needed to make the Figawi weekend go smoothly and in recognition of that Dianna was awarded the “Spirit of Figawi” trophy in 2003. Dianna was a Cape Codder born in Hyannis and raised two daughters on the Cape. Dianna worked as a hair stylist, real estate broker, hostess at Thirwood Place and for many years worked along side her life partner Charles V. Zahigian creating The Real Estate Book of Cape Cod. Dianna was a kind, thoughtful, generous lady who always had an ear to listen, had a witty sense of humor and prove to be a wonderful friend to many people. Dianna was a classy lady who will be sorely missed by all who were fortunate to have known her and leaves this earthly existence having had many more great memories than regrets. Dianna will be solely missed, but may she have calm seas and smooth sailing. Charles V. Zahigian

Remembering Win
Figawi lost one of its most enthusiastic participants and supporters last June to the great dismay of so many. Win, after all, had showed us how to live life to the fullest and, in the process, he became somewhat bigger than life himself. Win was a character and a pied piper to so many in the sailing community, whether in Hyannis, Coinjock, Ft. Lauderdale, or Key West. Particularly welcome were the warm receptions and cold libations available on Lou Lou within fifteen minutes of postrace landings, all the better if the race had been cancelled before the harbor start because surely a full day and evening of laughter, stories, and camaraderie were to follow. Win was a lifelong lover of all things marine. Having served in the Navy after graduating from Brown, he obtained his captain’s license and put it to constant use. He sailed Lou Lou in several Figawi’s and was not unknown to dispatch quasi-clad damsels to the aft rail, all the better to distract the helmsmen of overtaking vessels! No protests ever followed the ploy. Later, he moved aboard his trawler of the same name and plied the ICW from the Cape to Key West for years, making friends and exhaustive cruising notes along the way, an important habit because he was not a flyer.
Not surprisingly, he joined with his brother, the late Jeffrey Carter Foster, as one of the earliest members of the Band of Angels where he validated the simple power of tenacity. For years, he was a one joke pony at the joke telling session and, against their better judgment, the Band finally gave in and admitted him as a member. He did pay for dinner, after all. He was a consummate gentleman, a gracious and generous host, a lively debater (often wrong, however), a terrific seaman, a lover of life, a gifted gardener of all things legal, at least later in life, and a decent chef. He was also a gifted fisherman, having caught his fair share of square grouper over the years. His luckiest catch, however, was the lovely and talented Dana and he was so lucky to have her. She brought balance and love to his life and he was the better for it. He leaves his wife, Dana, his four daughters, Linda, Grace, Pam, and Laura, eleven grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and his sisters Nancy and Linda. Donations in his name may be made to the Hyannis Yacht Club Youth Sailing Committee, or to Hope Hospice, Fort Myers, FL, or to Hospice and Palliative Care of Cape Cod, Hyannis.

One summer day Peter Van Stratum suffered a heart attack at Highland Links in Truro. It was the luckiest day of his life.
When the ambulance arrived at Cape Cod Hospital’s emergency department, Dr. Zelman and his team were ready for Peter in our state-of-the-art cardiac care unit. In less than 30 minutes, blood flow was restored and the heart attack was over. Peter will be forever grateful. Dr. Zelman saved his life. Now every kiss he gives his wife, every round he plays...feels like an extra one.
We’re taking good care of you.

A Long Weekend To Remember... friends on Magic Dragon, a Hinckley 42 out of Hingham Bay. Coley Walsh, our “Seasoned Citizen,” arrives on-board, and one round later we take the launch for the pre-regatta party, where, the line for race gear and souvenirs is longer than the line at the bar. The food was deliciously inexpensive and the DJ was in tune so there was no need to hike the mile into town. The crew was able to jaw with old friends and make some new; however, we were here for the race so all were back on the boat and in our bunks early. The earplugs I handed out were appreciated due to the intermittent nocturnal nasal trumpeting. Coley and I awoke early only to find that the rest of the crew were already ashore, so we policed the boat and started breakfast for the crew. The aroma soon had an exodus from Magic Dragon, where we were told there was not even milk for coffee. Sailors take care of their own and we did our best “fishes and loaves” routine to feed the lot. The final team member to arrive was John Author, David Calnan Lacks whose unique combination of strength, light weight, and smarts were a welcome addition to our participation in the cruising fleet. The wind was blowing a stinky 25 knots out of the southwest and we “remember” the 130 was not on board, so we settle for the he 2010 Figawi had a fun sub-plot for me as a lesson in 110. After we slip the mooring we practice our man overboard team building. I sailed Ariel, a Tartan 40 out of Hingham Bay. skills by retrieving a precious Figawi hat. There are as many Similar to most Tartans, her positioning is in the middle of the spectators on shore as there are boats parading out the harbor “comfort performance spectrum.” Her owner, Doug Ryan, was and more than one boat failed their man overboard drill. Doug gave ready at the dock early Thursday morning when Ed Zalewski us our assignments: Big Jim and John were on the jib, the delivery and I arrived as the “delivery grunts”. We were soon underway grunts were now rail meat, and Coley was to work the traveler. heavy on provisions and light on crew – following the old adage After the start, Ariel moves well in heavy slop and we are “ leave plenty of time and go well provisioned.” The northeast gaining on the first boat. The cockpit crew are working well wind proved to be a tease as we unfurled and furled Doug’s new together and the Seasoned Citizens work on the traveler keeps a most beautiful 150 around Allerton Point. Doug took the owner’s smooth helm. Up on the rail I was glad to get my windward earprerogative and regaled us with thrice-told tales around Minot’s plug in before the first dousing. The goal of our first tack was to Ledge and the phrase “we don’t really know anything, we just go high on the mark to avoid the clustering, blanketing, and tidal remember a lot” became a mantra for the long weekend. slipping at the mark. However, a Boston Whaler was outrageously Once through the canal we popped the new-to-Ariel asymmetrical spinnaker for the run down to Mattapoisett Harbor. The anchored on our tack and only quick work with the centerboard kept Ariel from snagging their anchor line and getting a new spinnaker gave us our first true sail of the season, but… did not make the cut, and would soon be returned to a disappointed bro- sugar-scoop transom. In all the excitement we forget our plan, come about too early, and now we are looking for a hole in the ker. On arrival Doug remembered to employ his special “fenderboard” for reduced docking fees against wharf pilings. The board fleet to get above the mark on a port tact. bridges the width of two pilings and fenders are placed between the The first mark rounding in the 2010 Figawi deserves its own dissertation on what not to do. The wind dropped. The tide board and the boat. Once Ariel was secure the crew made a hard ripped. We were through our hole in the fleet. Doug thinks we’re beat for the Kin Sail Inn where Doug is known; and, we were well on the lay-line. The crew disagrees. I point out a boat from Hyanfed and highly entertained by a very friendly group of salty locals. nis continuing high on the mark, and yell “follow the local.” Big Jim Ray, Doug’s favorite shipwright, arrived Friday morning and took the helm for a sweet beat across Buzzards Bay. However, the man who pays the bills makes the call, and around we come. We can’t pinch for the mark in a heavy Tartan We started the engine to take us through Woods Hole and Doug blanketed on both sides with a 4kt current working against us, so “remembered” for us how it is better to risk burning out an overwe cut our loss and tack back to port. By David Calnan mark rounding and he said his new motto is “tack early and tack often.” The new waitress on staff did not count on a “Super High Intensity Training day”. ; We did, however, leave a generous tip. After a raucous dinner, Jim decides he, too, is a seasoned citizen, and goes back to the boat with Coley. Doug, Ed and I go Hingham Bay boat hopping and are treated to Reg Warren’s Short Story Cigars onboard Reflections, a Tartan 36. Even though we were having the best of times, someone thought it would be a good idea to try to get into an already overcrowded bar for a pub crawl. The Delivery Grunts say goodnight so we are ready for Pollack’s Rip and the return leg Sunday. The crew disperses Sunday morning to get some space and stretch our legs. My walk takes me to the Methodist Church where the Organist is preparing for Sunday service so I meditate to the music from “Titanic.” When I get back to the boat, Ariel’s crew is true to form, ready on-time, and together. Coley and I do our best “Geronimo” impersonations on deck as we depart. Discretion rules out an around-the-cape return, and as a reward, the wind picks up and we are soon sailing up Buzzards Bay, powering through the canal, and making a dash for Scituate Harbor. The sky catches fire as the sun sets behind Bug Light and we start taking watches forward for lobster buoys. Jim and I took turns on the Navigation Station, making sure HAL stayed the course while Doug takes a well-earned nap. The full moon is a late riser and there is a pall around the orb due to several wildfires in Quebec. I make one small navigation change to signal a move towards Scituate harbor and Doug’s internal alarm has him on deck. Jim and Ed were apologetic as they asked for their rides to fetch them and farewells were made on the Scituate Yacht Club dock. Our final leg on Memorial Day is worth a note because we followed a funeral procession made-up of a Coast Guard Cutter, several harbormaster boats, and a 40 foot sailboat with a very large american flag at half-mast, parade out of the harbor. There are servicemen on board in dress whites with aid-de-camp regalia and it was a beautiful tribute to whomever’s ashes were committed to the sea that morning. When we arrive, Hingham Bay is covered in smoke and we were anxious for news on the size of the Quebec fire. The wind builds as we dock at the Hull Yacht Club. Doug comments that the boat is cleaner than she has ever been at this point in a trip so we are free to go. All hands unload and disembark. There is too much wind to let go to waste so I call my friend with a Rhodes19 and wish I were sailing again….
our friends on Magic Dragon three boat lengths from the mark stuck on a port tack between a half-dozen other boats doing their best Michael Jackson moonwalking impersonation. The sailors approaching the mark on a starboard tack learn that “right of way” is a relative term as the enter the cluster. With the decreasing wind and increasing testosterone, it was time for a sail change. Ed and I are promoted from rail meat. The three minute sail change turns into ten when I realize the pin in the shackle is threaded, Doug tells me he doesn’t have a replacement, and Big Jim let’s me know his Leatherman I’m using is a family heirloom. After all that, the wind fills back completely, and wing on wing I can hear Dick Dale playing as we surf down the course. Above us, Maya is overpowered as well sailed and she gains. We notice “what appears to be” two crew members in black wetsuits hiking-out with harness and trapeze gear. These “Ninjas” hold fast with their feet to the hull while being handed their energy drinks. Doug and Ariel were in the groove sailing masterfully. However, a 48 foot Clorox bottle with a mast sails swiftly by us, and I am left to wonder about all the injustices in the world…. After rounding the leeward mark, we decided to reef the new 150 and keep sailing. We all appreciate that in doing so, Doug was “taking one for the team.” Maya and her Ninjas were making steady progress above us like a bad date. The reach to the finish was well sailed. But we lost our “race within the race” by four boat lengths. While powering into Nantucket Harbor and making Ariel ready for docking we noticed Maya’s Ninjas jump into sail bags to be stowed in the aft lazaretts. In the harbor we are blessed with a berth at the end of the Rope Walk Restaurant. And are quickly David Calnan hails from Hingham Bay and is the proud owner of greeted by pretty young women looking for a way into the Tent “Valiant” a Tartan 30, a member of the Salty Dogs Frostbite Laser Party. Ariel’s crew now shares a bond, and since there are only two Fleet, and on the Board of Trustees for The Lincoln Maritime Center, bracelets on board, they are quickly used to provide Doug a rebate. a not for profit public sailing and rowing program. After showers and light nosh John says his goodbyes and heads off to meet his family. The remaining crew amble to the Easy Street Restaurant to meet up with the crew of Magic Dragon. Do You remember when...
reminiscing with Jacquie Newson and Patty Nurse
..in 1972 -- There were three boats - Bob Horan, Joe Horan and Red Luby. Luby won. ...The first Figawi trophy was purchased by Baxters. ...in 1977 -- The Marblehead Challenge Trophy became a reality. ...in 1979 -- Now a three day event. Do you remember when Figawi was spelled Fugawi, and Ed Sullivan (sports editor for the Cape Cod Times) couldn’t print it spelled that way, so they had to change the name.. ...in 1980 -- You had to have a feather to get into the After Race Party -- no such thing as a bracelet, ...the only Figawi souvenir was a red and white t-shirt that was five bucks. -- Sold out of a shopping cart on the docks in Nantucket By John Linehan and Patty Nurse. ...the “Silver Fox” was the committee boat. ...the committee decided we needed to have food at the party, so Jacquie made a ham salad in three 30 gallon trash containers. One heckava lot of ham salad!... ...Figawi trophies were hand-painted pie plates by John Linehan. ...Gordons Gin and Budweiser were the first sponsors. ...in 1980 -- the clambake was added with bakemaster, Carl Flipp. Also in 1980 -- The Figawi Tent was where the VIP Tent is now. ...in 1982 -- a storm blew through, that most sailors will NEVER forget!... ...in 1984 -- We had a 14 piece Jazz Band playing 30’s and 40’s music. The John Salerno Band in the Tent. ....in 1985 -- The best Joke Teller Award was presented to John Scott for “Eskimo Nell.” The Joke Session took place on the docks standing from a second floor balcony ...in 1986 -- Dockmaster, Joe Lopes retired, and George Bassett took over. Also in 1986 - The Figawi attracted maxi-racer Matador. That was a BIG deal! More in 1986 -- The committee limited the number of boats to 225. And -- the race back was cancelled due to heavy winds. ...1987 -- The Figawi Ball was started thanks to Joe Hoffman. ...1987 -- Thanks to Buzzy Schofield, and the Musuem of Yachting in Newport, RI, the historic J Boat, Shamrock V, was on hand at Figawi! ...in 1996 -- for the silver anniversary, –– fireworks in Hyannis on Friday night. ...the 25th Race was dedicated to the memory of 3 former sailors, Ronn Carr, Vinnie Gildea, and Al Bluestein.

The Band – Ethnicity, Politics, and Humor by Charlie McLaughlin

rowing up as an Irish Catholic in Boston in the 60’s gives one a different, and shall we say, unique view of life. Take sports, for example. Most (normal) kids, and boys especially, would flip to the sports page daily for their required reading. Most Irish kids, on the other hand, would flip daily first to the Irish Sports Page, known to most as the “Obits”. For some reason, there is an Irish gene that made it vitally important to know who
had died, when and where the wake would be held, and, for aspiring pols, who would likely attend and whose vote would, at least for the upcoming election, be secured in temporary (if not eternal) gratitude for the pol’s attendance. Most pols in roughly equal numbers were motivated as well by either A) a sincere need to express one’s sympathy with the family or, B) a need to make sure that the SOB was indeed dearly departed. An Irishman is on his deathbed in North Cambridge, suffering mightily. Near the end, he catches a whiff of his most favorite cookies wafting upstairs from the kitchen where his bride of fifty years is baking. The smells temporarily

mask his suffering and he struggles out of bed, crawls down the stairs and into the kitchen. Unable to lift himself, his hand reaches up to the cooling rack on top of the kitchen table. Just as he makes contact with a cookie, WACK! , his bride slams his knuckles with a wooden spoon. “LEAVE IT”, she screams, “THEY’RE FOR THE WAKE.” On the other hand, politics was a full-time pastime for Irish kids. My first and limited exposure to Republicans was to two neighbors whose driveways my friend and I dug out every snowy winter – remember when? One was cheap and humorless; the other was just humorless. However, it wasn’t until I was 18 that I had a real

encounter with a Republican, a not uncommon scenario for a Cambridge kid. My friend and I were standing outside the local precinct voting place holding signs on election night when this hapless soul wandered up to my friend and asked, “And whose son are you?” Not missing a beat, my buddy, who suffered from a King George-sized stutter, finally managed, “My, father’s, I HOPE.” Turns out that the hapless one was the local, duty Republican offered in sacrifice by the Party to run against the candidate whose signs we were holding. Dumbfounded and speechless, the candidate simply turned on his heel and departed. Without smiling, of course. I had met my first Republican as an adult and I wasn’t impressed.

Here was a guy who knew very little about fishing and yet landed the largest of square grouper hastily dropped by Columbians off the Florida coast at the first sight of taxpayer-funded swift boats with BFG’s. In reality, he was probably a closet Democrat because 1/ he smiled, a lot, 2/ he was perfectly comfortable in the finest gay-run restaurants of Key West, and 3/ he told jokes of the highest caliber and was a member of the Band. What more proof do you need? We will miss you, good friend, even if you were always on the wrong side of the argument!

‰ Flower Pot Restriction ‰ The Figawi Nantucket Main Street
Scotty Peatie was probably a closet Democrat as well. We knew that because 1/ he too was a member of the Band, 2/ he had a big heart and family, 3/ he never met someone he didn’t like, and 4/ he never spoke ill of anyone. The conclusion may be in doubt because he always ducked the annual Band dinner, we suspect for fear of getting stuck with the tab but, on balance, he simple had far too many friends from every walk of life, all of whom miss his humor, his smile, and his words of wisdom. His jokes were superb, especially “Diesel Fit Her”, and he made us laugh. That’s a gift and we will miss him. At the confluence of sports and politics, and as more of us contemplate the Irish Sports Page while dealing with the drivel of the 24-hour news cycle, understand how great it is to have friends, to make them laugh and laugh with them, and to be together laughing one’s ass off. Life is short. Enjoy the laughter and know what’s important. Godspeed, guys, and thanks for showing us the way.
FigawiI Weekend have maintained firm restriction – that I will not travel past
the flower pot on Main Street during daylight hours. Ît is okay to go past the flower pot and venture into town, but it must be done after sunset. And I must return prior to sunrise. his regulation has been put in place as a tribute to the Nantucket Police Department for the professionalism they extended a group of us in 1991 by offering not to put us on the ferry back to Hyannis if we agreed to confine ourselves to the boat, dock or tent the rest of the weekend after they witnessed us stumbling back to the dock via Upper Main Street at 7:30 AM Sunday.

Start your trip off on the right foot.
Everyone knows Cape Air flies to Nantucket and the Vineyard from all over the Northeast, but hopping on a flight to Logan from Hyannis or Provincetown makes connecting a breeze. Our agreements with most major airlines let you check luggage through to your final destination, travel on a single itinerary, and more. So you can just sit back and enjoy the first leg of your vacation. Book online or call today.
