Headway South East Hello. My name is Catherine O’Hare. I’m the Information and Support Worker for Headway in the South East. I’m based in Carlow. Catherine O’Hare, Information and Support Worker

What is an Acquired Brain Injury? An Acquired Brain injury is an injury to a person's brain that happens during their lifetime. The injury can be caused by a stroke, a brain haemorrhage, an infection, a tumour, lack of oxygen, or a fall or other accident, for example.

How does a brain injury affect people? Many people with a brain injury make a good physical recovery. For some people what changes is the way they think and feel, how they talk to, and relate to others. Some of these changes may only be obvious to close family and friends. This is why acquired brain injury is known as a 'hidden disability' and can bring the injured person and their family many hidden challenges. This means that brain injury doesn't just happen to one person - it happens to a whole family.

Support

My phone number is 059 913 4029. I am usually available Monday to Thursday, 9 -1 and 2- 5 pm. If you need to leave a message, I will do my best to ring you back within half a working day. If you need urgent assistance and I am not available, please call Headway’s main Information and Support Line on 1890 200 278.

I facilitate Carers’ Support Groups in different locations in the South East. These groups are for carers or family members of people with an Acquired Brain Injury. The groups meet once a month and offer support and information for carers.

I also can give you a free pack which looks at the changes that can happen to a person and their family as a result of an Acquired Brain Injury, and provides tips for coping. It also provides pointers to other services that are available. This pack includes our “Carer and Family Guide - Coping with Acquired Brain Injury”.

If you’d like to come along, or get more information, please contact me.
