Presents
The 5th Annual Caring for the Caregiver Symposium November 10, 2012
Robert Cabral Agricultural Center 2101 E. Earhart Avenue Stockton, CA 95204
Our Goal is Simple. To save lives and to minimize the chances of a stroke occurring. What you don’t know can result in a lifetime disability.
e Sobering News Over 800,000 people suffer from strokes and end up struggling financially and in life. Strokes affect not just the person, but also the people that are close to them. Many times, people end up giving up their dreams to care for a loved that has had a stroke.
e Good News More than 80% of stroke effects can be prevented. Knowing the signs of stroke and what to do is key. We’re ready for active partnerships and alliances to complete our mission. www.healingsinmotion.org 877-672-4480

“There are only four kinds of people in the world—those who have been caregivers, those who currently are caregivers, those who will be caregivers and those who need caregivers.” —former first lady Rosalynn Carter
A Message from Mary Nicholson, Executive Director Healings in Motion I can’t believe it. I am here. I am a senior citizen. Hooray!!! What comes with age is endurance and experience. I am proud to join 79 million other boomers. As more seniors are living longer, we are apt to deal with more obstacles brought by illness and adjustments to the aging process. I was indoctrinated into the world of Caregiving when my husband was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer. Shortly after his passing, I had a brain aneurysm and had wonderful Caregivers (my mom and mother beyond law). I am with you today because of the selfless love and compassion of my Caregivers. My gratitude cannot be expressed more than to share a day of thanks with you. Welcome to the 5th Annual “Caring for the Caregiver” Symposium. This year’s theme is A Mindset to Care- for those caring with grace and confidence. Connect with other Caregivers, enjoy a massage, speak to a health and wellness coach, visit our exhibitors and enrich your life by the workshops presented for your enlightenment and growth. You are not alone on your journey. Our spirit, character and gratitude are forever connected. 3

A Mindset to Care by Ty Gray_El © 2012
Some people never consider What it takes for one to give care Most take it for granted How one’s life is supplanted When one has a Mindset to Care
When we measure a true champion When we picture someone who’s strong We seldom consider The Patient Caregiver There day after day, all yearlong Theirs is a determined mindset They push and they prompt and they prod They believe in the notion Of Healings in Motion Trusting their faith and their God
You see, caring for those with cancer And treating someone with a stroke Can be just as unnerving To the person whose serving As the one whose health’s been revoked Most suffer extreme exhaustion For themselves they rarely prepare They barely get treatment Their exams are infrequent They ignore their own health care
4
For those maimed in our Armed Forces And those who look after their pain For the care they provide And their Military pride We applaud how they never complain
And those altered by Alzheimer’s And dementia sufferers too Have come to depend On caregiving friends They make their last wishes come true With courage and unfailing spirit They coax and they coach and inspire Bringing hope to the frail Whose health’s been derailed Doing whatever’s required
So please pray for those unselfish And keep them lifted in prayer Cause when others abort They are there to support They’re born with a Mindset to Care

Massage Therapy Relieves Stress and Enhances Your Immune Function by Marisa Schambeck, Mimosa Salon & Spa
Massage therapy, also known as Swedish massage, is the most common form of massage therapy in the United States. Massage therapists use long, smooth strokes, kneading and other movements focused on superficial layers of muscle using massage oil or lotion. How Does Massage Therapy Work? Massage therapy improves circulation by bringing oxygen and other nutrients to body tissues. It relieves muscle tension and pain, increases flexibility and mobility, and helps clear lactic acid and other waste, which reduces pain and stiffness in muscles and joints.
Why Do People Get Massage Therapy? People get massage therapy for relaxation or for a variety of health conditions: • Back pain’• Inflammatory conditions such as arthritis and tendinitis • Stress relief and stress-related conditions• Headaches and migraines • Muscle and related conditions such as spasms, strains • Repetitive strain injury, such as carpal tunnel syndrome • Circulatory and respiratory problems • Post-injury and post surgical rehabilitation. Massage therapy relieves stress. It is thought to help the body’s stress response by lowering levels of hormones such as cortisol. Massage therapy also appears to enhance immune function.

What is Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (“OCD”)? People diagnosed with OCD spend over one hour daily struggling with repetitive intrusive thoughts, impulses and/or behavioral urges that increase their anxiety. They try to control their obsessions with compulsive behaviors or rituals that function as an attempt to reduce their anxiety. Over time, the rituals become less and less effective in controlling the obsessions. In the motion picture, "As Good As It Gets" (Sony Pictures, 1997), the lead character, played by Jack Nicholson, suffered from OCD. Do you understand what the doctor is saying?
The National Adult Literacy Survey estimates “90 million Americans – half of all adults – may struggle with low health literacy.” Older adults, minorities, immigrants, and people with low income are especially at risk for low health literacy.
According to the Harvard School of Public Health, there is a strong correlation between patients with low health literacy and the following: • Poorer overall health • Hospitalizations • Misunderstood treatment explanations, and • Inability to follow medical instructions
The American Medical Association reports, “Individuals with low health literacy incur medical expenses that are up to four times greater than patients with adequate literacy skills, costing the health care system billions of dollars every year for unnecessary doctor visits and hospital stays.” Ask for the explanations in plain language! What is a Stroke?
Without warning, an artery in the brain may become blocked, or it may burst. When this happens, blood and oxygen can no longer reach parts of the brain. Brain cells, deprived of oxygen, begin to die within minutes, and parts of the body begin to shut down. This is a stroke.
Stroke Symptoms?
Call 911. Increase your chances of living and reversing the symptoms, get to the hospital within 3-hours of stroke symptoms. Blood clot busting agents, like tPA, can make a significant difference.

In a CNN interview, Dr. Mehmet Oz reported that “health coaches should be a part of every public clinic, medical office and hospital wellness center and should be reimbursed by insurance companies & corporate wellness programs”.

As a former caregiver for almost 10 years, I understand personally the stress, loneliness, guilt and exhaustion that come with Caregiving. Caregivers have lives too and desperately need care as well. Andrea’s 7 step health/life coaching program brings care for the caregiver so they can thrive, not merely survive. Whether you need coaching in finances, relationships, health or other, Andrea will get you where you want to be! Her book ‘Seeds of Encouragement’ is a faith based compilation of short stories and poems about family, Caregiving, parenting and holidays. Contact Andrea Sharp at andrea@sharpwomen.com, 559-310-5692 or at www.sharpwomen.com October 19, 2005: The doctors and nurses worked valiantly to save my life; they later confided that for the first couple of days they weren’t sure I would make it. Now, as a heart attack survivor, living daily with heart failure, I know from personal experience that it is possible to survive and thrive. All you need is a heart-healthy lifestyle! I also know that I could have prevented my heart attack, if only I had known what to do, and had actually done what I knew I should be doing. This adverse situation has turned into a positive one. Now with my help, people eat fabulously, sleep soundly, stay hydrated, manage stress, enjoy exercise, manage alcohol, let go of smoking, enjoy relationships, improve oral health, have fun and enjoyment, enhance spiritual connection, and engage their health care team for their success. http://www.Heart-HealthyLifestyles.com Office: 408-297-2066 Cell: 408-753-0541 Twitter: @HeartHealthyLS

I include innovative creative ideas to my coaching style. I listen to you to hear your heart. You deserve to be the jewel you were destined to be. As a professional health coach, I help you make the necessary lifestyle changes you choose. Book your Complimentary Coaching Call with me and feel the comfort. Coach HariAtma, 907-376-4601, giving2@gmail.com Establishing a safe, non-judgmental relationship can be a challenge. As Caregivers you probably don’t have much time for one-on-one coaching. Coaching is usually by telephone at a time that works best for you. Are you tired of having the same results? The Symposium offers FREE Health Coaching from people trained to help you reach your goals.
