he devastation of Hurricane Maria in 2017 had North American medical facilities facing one of the largest IV supply backorder situations in recent memory. Because Puerto Rico was without power for months, IV supplies typically manufactured and/or sterilized there were in short supply. This affected inventory of alternative items. Backorders for supplies were at an all-time high. As dire as the situation may have seemed, Health Care Logistics was there to help. Through constant communication with our customers, vendors and our internal departments we were able to offer unique solutions to those affected by this disaster.

For example, our Bottle Hangers were life savers for facilities short on IV bags.

Many facilities relied on glass vials for IV drips during the shortage. Because they don’t have built-in hangers, users found themselves creating DIY solutions to suspend them during administration.

Our disposable Bottle Hanger creates a loop that allows users to safely and reliably administer bottled infusions from glass vials. The plastic hanger, available for 20mL, 50mL and 100mL vials, secures at two points and allows extension away from the IV pole to provide less obstruction while delivering intravenous fluid to the patient. During the hit the IV supplies took in 2017-18, the disposable Bottle Hanger provided an effective way to maintain patient safety and in many cases is still doing so today.

Beginning Dec 1, 2019, sterile compounders will be held accountable for meeting the revised requirements of USP <797>. While the revisions 10091 - Sterile Cleanroom Wipes remain open for comment, sterile compounders can start prepping now. USP <797> details a number of requirements designed to protect the sterile cleanroom from contamination.
