As Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children at P/SL opened its doors, many of us who have been involved in expanding pediatric care at HealthONE look back at the progress we have made in the past 20 years — and realize we are most excited about new projects that will improve our ability to care for our children, from the tiniest to the teens. The small group of pediatric specialists who joined Presbyterian/St. Luke’s Medical Center in

1990 had a vision to provide excellent clinical care for children and outstanding service and support for parents. They succeeded. And now, the small group of specialists has expanded to include more than 300 board-certified/board-eligible pediatric experts, and the vision for care and service has extended throughout all of HealthONE’s RMHC “family of hospitals.” As someone who has had a career in healthcare, I’m proud to see the successful completion of >>> continues

But as a parent, I’m especially grateful to our medical staffs and employees who’ve been devoted to making pediatric care at RMHC the best in our region. When your child has more than a minor illness, you look for the most trusted care possible, the safest environment, and the fastest response. Making A World of Difference Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children: Founded By Physicians with a Vision

N Miracles Come in Small Packages Gabriela and Kevin Stear anticipated two additions to their family in the spring of 2010 with the arrival of twins. However, Gabriela experienced complications. Sophia, weighing just one pound fifteen ounces, spent the first critical hours of her life at Rose Medical Center before being transported to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children at Presbyterian/St. Luke’s Medical Center (P/SL). Avery, weighing two pounds two ounces, spent four days at Rose before joining his sister in the NICU at P/SL. The next twelve weeks proved to be critical for Sophia and Avery. Gabriela remarks, “The NICU at P/SL was phenomenal. I truly believe that Sophia would not be alive today if she hadn’t been taken to P/SL.” Because of the care Sophia and Avery received in the NICU at P/SL, the Stear family made a generous donation to Rocky Mountain Children’s Health Foundation to help families who need assistance while their children are hospitalized or undergoing medical treatment.

early 20 years ago, several of Denver’s leading pediatric physicians, subspecialists and surgeons — along with maternal-fetal specialists and neo-natologists — envisioned a leading regional pediatric care team that provided comprehensive care for families, from conception to birth and continuing through adolescence into adulthood. Central to this vision was the honored tradition of doctors and nurses using their skill, creativity and utmost compassion to bring every child and family the best possible care. The journey began with a dedicated team of physicians who relocated their practices to Presbyterian/ St. Luke’s Medical Center. Over the

years, with its roots at P/SL, the “pediatric hospital within a hospital” grew to become known as a hospital offering world-class expertise in maternal-fetal, newborn, pediatric and adolescent care. With a team of more than 300 affiliated physicians providing care in more than 40 specialties in a collaborative, multi- disciplinary care setting and the burgeoning demand from families across the Rocky Mountains and Great Plains, the need for more space became paramount. In 2008, ground was broken on the P/SL campus for Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children. Today, we celebrate the state-of-the-art facility that’s filled with dedicated, compassionate people who continue to provide trusted care for kids.

Dear Dr. Zimbleman, Dr. Clark and the entire staff at Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children at P/SL, It hardly seems as though seventeen months have passed since we first ended up at Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children at P/SL. I wanted to write this note since a mere “thank you” doesn’t seem like near enough. There were so many questions and so much uncertainty. As the doctors answered each of our questions, and the nurses took the time to explain how to care for Shea ourselves, I never felt that any question or concern that we had was wrong. During the first part of Shea’s treatment at P/SL we got to know a lot of people and were connected with a lot of great programs and foundations whose assistance was tremendously beneficial. Wherever we went in the hospital, we were always greeted with a smile and the sincere question as to how we were all doing. It really made us realize what a special group of people work at P/SL. I only know a portion of what you had to do in order to give Shea the third stage of the treatment with the experimental drug. If it was not an option to do it at P/SL we would not have done it at all. Everyone involved in his treatment is truly special. Shea became very close with his nurses and all of the doctors, and when we got to the end of the road, it was bitter sweet. Everyone truly feels like they are part of the family. You all taught us a lot during our time there. What seemed like such a bad thing at the beginning turned out to be so positive in the end. You truly do make a difference in people’s lives. Thank you for taking such good care of our son.
