Scoliosis – Common Symptoms and Treatment Modalities Scoliosis is a medical disorder characterized by an abnormal, sideways curvature of the spine or backbone. The condition normally occurs during the growth spurt just before puberty. If the curve in the spine is nonstructural, it is temporary and can be corrected. The other case is when the spine has a fixed curve due to a birth defect or disease. Though the exact cause is unknown in most people with the condition, it can occur due to the following factors:
Neuromuscular conditions, such as cerebral palsy or muscular dystrophy
Birth defects affecting the development of the bones of the spine
Injuries to or infections of the spine
Hereditary factors
Severe scoliosis can be disabling and reduce the amount of space within the chest, making it difficult for the lungs to function properly.
Signs and Symptoms The common signs and symptoms associated with this condition are –
Uneven waist
Uneven shoulders
Tendency to lean on one side
One shoulder blade that appears more prominent than the other
