December 2013 Wellbeing As your company continues to plan wellness initiatives for 2014, you may want to review your program model and look for a fresh approach. “Wellbeing”, a book written by Tom Rath and Jim Harter, discusses the five elements of wellbeing. The model expands the physical components of wellness into a whole person approach. Good health is created by more than the foods we eat or the number of steps we walk each day. In order to truly thrive in both our personal and professional lives, we need to embrace all elements of wellbeing: career, social, financial, physical and community. 763-287-0740 info@healthsource-solutions.com

Career wellbeing refers to liking what you do each day. Social wellbeing focuses on building strong relationships. Financial wellbeing is feeling secure and successfully managing your economic life.

University Medical Center (UMC) in Lubbock, Texas is bringing the Wellbeing concept to their employees starting January 2014. HealthSource Solutions presented the idea of expanding the UMC wellness program beyond traditional wellness programming. The goal is to focus on each of the 5 elements of wellbeing: career, social, community, financial and physical/mental. The wellness committee loved the concept and thought it would be a good fit for their culture. During their planning meeting, the group brainstormed a list of activities and events UMC was already offering their employees. They came up with an extensive list and were well on their way to creating their wellbeing program. They decided on a three step program. • Step one - participate in the health assessment and onsite screening • Step two - set a wellbeing goal to work on during the year • Step three - complete programs/activities within three of the five elements of wellbeing. A goal was set to have 60% of employees complete all three steps of the program. Next steps included creating a communication plan and timeline. The wellbeing program was first presented to managers and supervisors. A brochure was developed introducing the program and will be sent to the home of every employee. Additional communication pieces will be sent out early in the year with a big push for their health assessment and screenings that will happen in January and February. The committee chair of the UMC wellness program stated, “With the launch of our new wellbeing program, we are hoping to achieve increased engagement in our wellness program. We feel this new focus will generate excitement in all areas of wellbeing instead of wellness being only about eating right and exercising.”
