Eating Healthy: at Home, at Work, and on the Run!

Developing Mindful Eating

The National Weight Control Registry (NWCR), a United States database of adults who have lost at least 30 pounds and kept if off for at least one year, investigates the characteristics of those individuals who have succeeded in long-term weight loss. The NWCR has identified the following common strategies in successfully losing weight and keeping it off: 1. Maintaining low-fat, low-calorie food choices. 2. Eating breakfast every day. 3. Self-monitoring weight. 4. Watching less than 10 hours of TV per week. 5. Exercising on average 60 minutes per day. We know that successful long-term weight loss is not about a fad diet or about drastically cutting calories, but rather it’s through healthy nutrition, activity and life balance. Encouraging your employees to adopt these five strategies is a simple way to assist them in reaching a healthy weight.

Three Companies Impacting Worksite Nutrition Are you looking for ways to support your employees in making healthier food choices at work? Here are a few ideas from companies we work with: Coldspring, a predominately natural stone and bronze products company in Cold Spring, MN launched a Nutrition Committee that works alongside their Wellness Committee. Their mission is to improve the health and quality of life of employees and their families through implementing dietary guidelines for vending, snacks and catering. Examples of what they have done include: partnering with a local grocer to bring fresh fruits and vegetables to the worksite each day at a subsidized fee, revamping their vending to offer healthy snacks, working with a local bakery to prepare a healthy muffin and including a nutrition article in their weekly company newsletter. Our onsite Fitness Center staff located at Ceridian, have been working alongside Eurest, Ceridian’s catering vendor, to promote a monthly Superfood. The Fitness Center hosts a monthly Lunch & Learn educating employees on the nutritional benefits of a particular Superfood, such as: legumes, sweet potatoes, citrus fruits, avocados, winter squash, etc. The catering chef presents tips and tricks on how to prepare and cook each food and brings samples for the group to try. Employees are able to purchase a lunch entrée that includes the featured food and Eurest offers a buy 3 get 1 free punch card for purchasing the featured entrée and attending the Lunch & Learn. The Wellness committee at DriSteem has introduced a Community Supported Bakery (CSB) through Fred’s Bread, a locally owned bakery in Eden Prairie, MN. Through the CSB, employees have the opportunity to purchase a “bakery share”—quality breads of their choice delivered weekly to their worksite. The breads are prepared fresh, from scratch. The base ingredients are flour, water, salt and yeast. Some of the breads also include grains, nuts and dried fruits but that’s it, nothing else!

Featured Program: A New Weigh to Move, to Eat, to Live Spring is a time when we begin to shed the layers, putting away the sweaters and parka’s. It’s also an excellent time for shedding bad habits acquired over the long winter. A New Weigh is a great program to help facilitate long-lasting behavior change. This 12-week weight-loss challenge helps participants increase healthy habits related to physical activity, nutrition and life balance. Each week participants read through the weekly education in their colorful program book and track healthy behaviors to earn points.
