Organization Highlight: Ho Chunk Nation The Ho Chunk Nation, headquartered in Black River Falls Wisconsin, is working to bring wellness to their community in new and exciting ways. In July of 2014, Ho Chunk Nation partnered with HealthSource Solutions to offer their employees Every Step Counts, an eight-week pedometer step challenge. Participants had the opportunity to compete against one another to see who could accumulate the most steps each week. The pedometers helped to give participants’ a visual perception of how much activity they were getting each day, and the competition helped to keep people accountable throughout the program. The feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive. They talked about the camaraderie, the fun of the competition, the motivation to move because they didn’t want to let their teammates down, and the health benefits they received from increased energy and stamina, to weight loss, to improved sleep. Overall, the program was a great success and left participants hungry for more. The following November, Ho Chunk decided to offer the same program a second time, but to expand their reach beyond employees and offer it to members of the community as well. To make the program feel more like their own, they again partnered with HealthSource Solutions to customize the program name, design, and overall feel of the challenge. After the second roll-out of the program, Ho Chunk again received a tremendous amount of positive feedback. Here are what some participants had to say about the pedometer challenge: “I have lost more than 30 pounds from the last two eight-week step challenges this past year. I hope to keep the pounds from coming back. I hope there are more of these challenges planned as they are fun, and keep me motivated.” “I am only 11 years old and I am doing this with my mom, grandma and grandpa.” “I have a hard time being successful on my own. Having a team of coworkers as my supporters really helped to keep me accountable. Loved being part of making healthy changes individually, together with my teammates, and most importantly, with the Nation!
