Brit Floyd Rocks the Riverside

B. Louis With a spectacular new million dollar light show and state of the art video design… and an even bigger stage production, Brit Floyd – Space & Time – Continuum promises to be the most ambitious and best Brit Floyd show yet. Following it’s hugely successful 146 concert date tour across the globe in 2015, Brit Floyd, The World’s Greatest Pink Floyd Show, returns to North America in 2016 to continue it’s exploration through fifty years of Pink Floyd, and the vast and incredible catalogue of music. As well as performing the favourite moments from The Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals, The Wall and The Division Bell, Brit Floyd will treat the audience to their show-stopping rendition of Echoes, in its entirety, from the landmark album Meddle, as well as a host of other Pink Floyd musical gems. Brit Floyd show was modeled after Pink Floyd’s light show and they did not disappoint. The 30-foot round video screen was filled with retro animated graphics, short films and pictures that represent each year the songs were released. Amazing guitar, thundering drums, stunning backup vocals, spot-on keyboards and sound effects would generally be all one could ask for in a live show - Brit Floyd brings it all. The light show was spectacular. Lights beaming from the floor, ceiling and all around the stage. Lasers and smoke added to the real Floyd feeling.Vivid and bright. The music did strike a powerful chord in the audience and the vocals and background singers were nothing less than spot on. The whole show was masterfully scripted and executed in a sold out venue. The three-hour show was an amazing combination of Pink Floyd’s entire career from 1967 to 1994. They played the true Floyd favorites and added a few of the lesser known songs. Despite difficult weather conditions, the Milwaukee women’s track and field team closed out the Big Blue Classic in fine fashion with top performances in all areas Saturday on the campus of Eastern Illinois. “It was an interesting weather day,” Milwaukee head coach Pete Corfeld said. “There were some really strong winds, but it was pretty sunny all day. It definitely affected the performances, but I feel like we got a lot out of the competition. That’s what this is all about. I think we got a lot done in that regard and it will pay off in the weeks to come.” Milwaukee started things off in the morning with some great performances in the discus throw. Steph Kostowicz led the way by finishing third with an incredible toss of 46.06m (151-1). That mark now moves her into second place in school history. Not far track>>page 13

Awkward.
mtv brings three shows
airs Tuesday nights
This series takes an irreverent look at the conflict, chaos and humor that defines teenage life through the eyes of 15-year-old Jenna Hamilton, whose life begins to change when a simple accident becomes an epic misunderstanding and is blown way out of proportion. Narrated in the first-person voice of Jenna’s blog posts, “Awkward.” captures the humor within the struggles and experiences everyone can relate to from their formative years. The series picks up in the aftermath o f the accident as she must deal with a new not-so-fun stigma, while at the same time managing the other daily drama that comes with being a teenager. From a secret relationship with a popular guy, to being undermined by a mean girl, and parents who just don’t get it - Jenna’s misfortune will eventually serve as the catalyst for amazing change, but it’s not without some missteps and mishaps along the way. There are only a few weeks left of high school, and Jenna and are friends are making the most of it. Everyone’s already figured out what they’re going to do next year, and there’s the sense that anything can happen. The season builds to big senior year milestones like senior pranks, prom and graduation where Jenna will have to decide once and for all: are she and Matty meant to be?

Binge Thinking
Faking It airs Friday nights
“Binge Thinking” is the ultimate bar crawl, game show on TV that will finally discover the truth behind the question: think you’re smarter after a few drinks? Host, Mac Lethal (Youtube star, rapper), along with co-host Amber Diamond (“Nick Cannon Presents:Wild ‘N Out”), visit a different city’s party spot each week and whip up an impromptu game show with unsuspecting (and sometimes a bit “lubricated”) contestants. The games cover everything in pop culture from trivia, to physical stunts, to prop-based gameplay all aimed at testing the contestants’ ability to think while they drink.
airs Tuesday nights
Faking It began as a romantic comedy about two best friends who love each other in slightly different ways. This season, each character struggles to figure out who they are and who they are not. When Amy’s new girlfriend pressures her to come out as a lesbian, Amy realizes that she’s still confused about her sexuality. She even sparks to a cute new guy at school who shares her sarcastic wit. But, ultimately, Amy must reconcile her complicated feelings for Karma—but will their friendship survive?

Chris Guse sits in his basement office, surrounded by some of the tools and technology that have earned him the nickname “Theater Wizard.”
B.O.S.S. [ ] is a non-emergency service designed to provide a safe ride around the UWM campus. Be on the safe Side.
Theater Prof Makes Fx Available To All By Marie Rohde Some people call Chris Guse the Theater Wizard. He prefers to think of himself as a storyteller. “I use sound and technology to tell a story,” said Guse, who teaches in the Peck School of the Arts. “You go to a rock ’n’ roll concert to hear the music you love performed live. But there’s more to it – lighting, maybe a video presentation behind the band, prerecorded audio tracks. Designers and engineers who create that stuff are helping the band tell their stories. I do the same with plays.” As the Theater Wizard, Guse has provided award-winning technical expertise for diverse arts groups, including the Milwaukee Chamber Theatre, the Atlanta Historical Museum in Atlanta, Texas, and the Zoological Society of Milwaukee’s Kohl’s Wild Theater. His work stands out, in part, because he has been able to provide hightech effects even when smaller companies are on a shoestring budget. Dave McLellan, theater coordinator for the zoo program, hired Guse to help develop “The Congo Code,” an original interactive play promoting conservation and STEM-based learning (science, technology, engineering and math) among area middle schoolers. “Normally, the first thing you’d do with a project like this is hire someone to write the play before the designer is selected,” McLellan said. “Given what we wanted to do, we decided to hire a playwright and a tech designer to start the project at the same time.” McLellan said Guse was as important as the playwright in telling the story. “That’s not typical in the theater world. When I hired him, I wasn’t sure what he’d do, but he figured it out.” The 45-minute play took a year to develop. Guse provided video animation, original music and other technology integral to a plot designed to capture the hearts and minds of middle schoolers and teachers: Cameron, the protagonist, was trapped in a video game, and relied on the audience and their STEM skills to escape. The play won the Milwaukee Business Journal’s 2015 Eureka Award for creativity, innovation and ingenuity in education, and Guse was invited to collaborate on another project. Last fall, Kohl’s Wild Theater debuted “Trash or Tunes,” a collaboration between Guse and Alvaro Saar Rios, an assistant professor of playwriting in the Peck School. “The theatrical style is more traditional, but we had to build musical instruments out of trash,” McLellan said. Building the instruments was Guse’s task, and the wizard had many ideas. In the end, he focused on three: a pipe instrument, known as a plosive aerophone, that makes an unearthly sound; an electric guitar fashioned from a hand-held vacuum cleaner; and a drum kit made of buckets, springs, cans and a bike wheel. Guse’s cost-conscious creativity has humble origins: his Sheboygan, Wisconsin, basement. His high-school rock band, Captain Crunch and the Funky Bunch, practiced there. A guitarist, Guse would pick up his bandmates’ instruments between practices – experimenting with musical arrangements and DIY technology. “I kludged together a few cassette decks I had collected to create my own multitrack recording system,” said Guse, whose band broke up in the late ’80s. “It’s an early example of finding a low-cost solution to a high-end technical problem. I found out a couple years later that the joy I got from solving these kinds of problems was actually a skill coveted by the entertainment industry and particularly theater.” Audiences can see his wizardry at work this spring, when the Peck School presents “Corktown.” The student production will feature animation, video and sound engineered by the Theater Wizard and his students. uwm.edu/news.

UWM STUDENTS EAGER TO REDESIGN MILWAUKEE’S CITY FLAG
By Graham Kilmer UWM students spent Wednesday morning in a People’s Flag of Milwaukee workshop geared toward designing a better Milwaukee city flag. Every morning, Connor Main walks past Milwaukee’s city flag on his way to Mitchell Hall, where he learns the principles of graphic design, which tell him the flag is full of flaws. Now, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee student has a chance to correct those flaws and design a new flag for the city of Milwaukee. Main spent Wednesday morning in a workshop that teaches basic flag design while also discussing several issues facing Milwaukee, including segregation. It’s part of the People’s Flag of Milwaukee project spearheaded by UWM alumnus and graphic designer Steve Kodis, who’s a vocal advocate of redesigning Milwaukee’s flag, an idea that’s gaining local traction. He’s partnered with local nonprofit Greater Together, which aims to increase diversity and combat segregation through the design and arts community. The ultimate goal is to have a new flag that’s a better symbol for Milwaukee. Although Milwaukee officials haven’t agreed to make changes to the flag, businesses and petitioners have shown support for the idea. The UWM workshop was one of many happening at area schools, and the project welcomes design submissions from the metro-Milwaukee area through April 14 – Milwaukee Day. The top 50 designs, including five finalists, will be exhibited at Milwaukee’s City Hall May 14, and a winner will be announced June 14, which is Flag Day. “It’s an opportunity,” said UWM senior Morgan Kromholz, “to learn not only what’s not working with our flag, but also what’s not working with our community.”
Amy Decker, a design and visual communication lecturer in UWM’s Peck School of the Arts, encouraged her students to participate in Wednesday’s workshop. “It’s nice to see that this community focus resonates and stays with our students well after they graduate,” Decker said. And Kodis isn’t the only UWM alumnus involved. Katherine Wilson, a UWM alumna and associate director of Greater Together, led the workshop in discussions of the issues facing Milwaukee, with The current Milwaukee city flag, an eye toward inspiring creative designs which UWM students and others have that speak to Milwaukee as a whole. been tasked with redesigning as part It’s a cause that encouraged Main of the People’s Flag of Milwaukee to put the design tenets he’s learned at project. UWM toward benefiting the city. “There’s a strong sense of community,” he said, “and that makes you want to get involved.” uwm.edu/news.

the list WHAT ARE YOU HOPING TO GET OUT OF COLLEGE Put these in the order of importance Geographical knowledge Historical Knowledge Health and Fitness Math Knowledge Career path (how you are going to support yourself financially) Social skills (ability to adapt and fit in society) If you were offered a deal to pay $5000 for a six month online degree that would be just as valid as any other degree towards landing a job would you do that instead of 4 years and $200,000? Do you wish society, school and your parents would have better explained the road from point A to B to a successful career and life path? Do you feel that your options are limited regarding how you’re going to fulfill your career path? Meaning, college is the only viable option. Do you wish, growing up, health and fitness were more stressed by society, school and your parents? Do you wish, growing up, that figuring out a career path was stressed earlier so you had more time to think about it and prepare for it? Do you believe too many kids are choosing career paths they know little about at a very expensive price tag (college)? List, in order of importance, the things you are hoping to get out of college. Each time you list something pretend like the next item could be taken off the list. For example, if you list “well rounded experience” first and “career possibilities” second, you could be left with just “well rounded experience” since it is listed higher. This way you will truly list them in order of importance.

Fellow freshman Rachel Liegel also did well with a PR mark of 31.20m (102-4). In the 100m hurdles, Melissa Kirchoff had a pair of outstanding performances. Then, in finals, the Franklin native slid up into third place in school history with a blazing time of 14.08 to finish third overall on the day. Kirchoff also had a strong showing in triple jump, finishing fifth overall with a season-best leap of 11.49m (37-8 ½). Not far behind was classmate Alisha Harper at 10.95m (35-11 ¼) in 10th. Harper also led the way in the 100m sprint with a personal-best time of 12.87 seconds, with senior Anuli Okonkwo right behind at 12.89 seconds. Okonkwo also finished as the top Panther in the 200m, crossing the line in 25.60 for 12th out of 41. In the 400m, Kate Novacek had one of the best performances of the day. The

Rylee Anderson posted another top10 finish for the Black and Gold Saturday with a seventh-place showing in high jump. The sophomore who won the league title during the indoor season cleared 1.60m (5-3), just shy of her season best despite the windy conditions. Austin Anderson also did well in her first ever 400m race with a time of 1:05.05. Bryzena Santos led four Panthers in javelin with a throw of 29.24m (95-11), just shy of her PR. Tiby And Johnson Earn Horizon League Postseason Honors
mkepanthers.com Matt Tiby and Jordan Johnson of the Milwaukee men’s basketball team were named to the All-Horizon League Team today when the league announced its postseason awards as voted on by league coaches, sports information directors and local media. Tiby was selected as a first-team member, while Johnson earned a spot on the second team. This marks the second year in a row that Milwaukee has had two members of the 10-player squad. It also marks the first time it has had a first-team member since Anthony Hill in 2010-11. Tiby, who was also named to the Preseason All-Horizon League squad, came through in his final season with career-highs in both scoring (15.6 ppg) and rebounding (8.3 rpg), both of which lead the team and rank highly among league leaders. Tiby starts the postseason ranked No. 11 in program history with 1,303 points and the No. 6 rebounder with 718 boards. Just the 15th player to reach the combined 1,000 points/500 rebound level in a career, he has been a starter in all 96 games he has appeared in in his career. The team’s emotional leader, Tiby was named a secondteam all-league selection as a junior. His career high in points scored came earlier this season against South Dakota, when he went off for 31 on the night he became the 26th player in program history to reach 1,000 points. Johnson has been nothing short of spectacular as Milwaukee’s new point guard this season. He has been ranked No. 2 in both assists per game and total assists in the NCAA the entire season and has rewritten the Milwaukee record book when it comes to virtually any assist record. Heading into postseason play, he is averaging 8.2 assists per game, well ahead of the school-record pace of 7.0 set by Marc Mitchell in 1992-93. Johnson adds 12.3 points and 3.6 rebounds per game and earlier this year posted just the fourth tripledouble in school history. His 254 assists broke the school record of 214 in a season and his nine games of 10-or-more assists snapped the school mark of six such outings earlier as well. In addition, he has eight double-doubles of the points/assists variety, extending his school mark past the former standard of five set in 1992-93. Lastly, in the regular-season finale, he broke the school record for assists in a game when he handed out 15 against the Flames.

Postseason Awards Roll In For Milwaukee
ACH OF THE YEAR RECHLICZ NAMED CO
mkepanthers.com Kyle Rechlicz and Steph Kostowicz both picked up big honors by the Horizon League today when the league announced its postseason awards as voted on by league coaches, sports information directors and local media. Rechlicz was named Horizon League Coach of the Year after leading Milwaukee to its best season in 10 years. After finishing eighth of nine last year and graduating the majority of its scoring, the Panthers were picked to finish ninth in the now-10 team Horizon League. Instead, Rechlicz guided her team to an incredible second-place finish with an 18-11 regular-season record and 12-6 mark in league play. UWM rattled off a pair of fivegame win streaks during the season and earned a double bye into this weekend’s league tournament in Green Bay. Under Rechlicz’s coaching this season, three different Panthers have been named league player of the week and Milwaukee won the award four times. She becomes just the second UWM coach to win the league’s top award since the Panthers joined the Horizon League and the first since Sandy Botham did so in 2005-06. Kostowicz also received high praise from the voters, being named First-Team All-Horizon League after an impressive season on the court. After a limited freshman campaign due to injury, Kostowicz started her sophomore season on fire and never looked back. The Oak Creek native is fourth in the league in rebounding (8.9), fourth in blocks (1.4), sixth in field goal percentage (.536) and 11th in scoring (13.8). She leads her team in all of those categories and has posted an impressive seven double-doubles this season. While Kostowicz has been strong all season long, two games in particular stand out from the rest. Early in the season, she hauled in an incredible 20 rebounds in a win over Northern Illinois, just two shy of tying the school record. Then, just this past weekend, Kostowicz racked up an career-high 32 points in a thrilling win over Oakland to tie her for the seventh-highest total points in a single game in program history.
