BEAKER About Recording a new EP for the autumn. Ready those Volumetric Flasks, people. Biography Beaker was formed billions of years ago followed shortly by the big bang, which takes all the credit for creating the universe. Carl, the frontman, thought he needed help in spreading the message of punk/funk to everyone. He enlisted Josh Verichak- Guitar and Backing Vocals and Rocky Corona- Drums, Backing Vocals, and Texting, along with various other people and squirrels he could exploit. Since then, Beaker has been a constant force in the music world, but choose to stay behind the scenes.. Band Interests Having a good time.. all the time. BEAKER Shows: The Monkey Bar (Milwaukee)

BEAKER injects humor, lighting effects, and crowd interaction into all of its performances.

Incorporating the upbeat sounds of modern pop, punk, ska, and progressive rock, BEAKER provides high energy performances focused on fast paced danceable music blending both original songs and unique interpretations of those from other artists. BEAKER is more than just music as it focuses equal effort on the entertainment and performance side of each show. Playing as a trio since late 2005, the members crossed paths through several previous bands such as “Beerfish”, “Chuckster”, “Silent Anthem” and “MasterJack”. BEAKER came together with the intent of providing an entertaining experience for the audience instead of just musicians playing songs by injecting humor, lighting effects, and crowd interaction into all of its performances. In this way, BEAKER has been very successful in generating a very loyal following in and around the Milwaukee metro area.

COLLEGE: TIPS FOR MANAGING CREDIT Piling up debt during your college years is alarmingly easy. Credit card issuers often employ persuasive marketing techniques to get students to open accounts. Once students have credit cards in hand, the temptation is so great that many end up graduating with not only a diploma, but significant consumer debt. That doesn’t mean college students should shun credit cards completely, reports the Wisconsin Institute of Certified Public Accountants. Used properly, credit cards can be beneficial in establishing a credit history and in providing aid in emergency situations. And, believe it or not, it’s often easier to get a credit card while you’re still a student. That’s because credit card companies know that once you’ve graduated, Mom and Dad are less likely to come to your aid if you can’t meet the payments. Here’s what CPAs say college students need to know about credit cards. One is enough. There’s little reason for a college student to have more than one credit card. In fact, having too many credit cards can work against you when it comes time to buy a car or rent an apartment. That’s because some lenders may be reluctant to extend additional credit to you out of fear that you’ll run up balances on all your

open credit cards and be unable to meet the payments. Select your credit card wisely. Credit card interest rates and terms vary widely. Look for a card with a low interest rate and no annual fee. To avoid interest charges, you’ll want a card with a grace period of at least 25 days. A grace period lets you avoid finance charges by paying your balance in full before the due date. And be sure to read the fine print covering fees for late payments, exceeding your credit limit, cash advances, and overseas transactions. Be wary of low teaser rates. Some credit cards have low introductory rates that jump sharply after three or six months. On other offers, lower introductory rates apply only to balances you transfer from another credit card. And beware -some credit card issuers will raise your rate if you’re late on a payment. Don’t charge what you can’t pay back EACH MONTH. Except when absolutely necessary, you should never charge more than you will be able to pay back when the bill arrives. Before charging a purchase, think it through. If you are not able to afford the purchase now, chances are you won’t be able to afford it in a month when the credit card bill arrives. Lay low with your credit limit. A low credit line limits the amount of credit you have access to and helps to remove the temptation to overspend. Should you receive a congratulatory letter raising your credit limit, call the credit card issuer and decline the offer. Avoid cash advances WHENEVER possible. Many card issuers impose both finance charges and transaction fees for cash advances. Unlike charge purchases, interest on a cash advance is normally charged from the transaction date and the cash advance fee may be as high as 2.5 percent of the amount taken. Protect your account number. Don’t give your account number out over the Internet or elsewhere unless you initiated the transaction. Keep separate from your card a record of your account numbers, expiration dates, and the phone numbers for each issuer. Contact them immediately if your credit card is lost or stolen. Be sure that you open credit card bills promptly and check for unauthorized transactions or billing errors. If you see fraudulent activity, notify your issuer immediately. CHECK YOUR CREDIT REPORT. CPAs suggest that you check your credit report at least once a year to be sure it is accurate. What’s in your credit report can determine whether you can get a car loan, rent an apartment, or even get hired for a job. The Wisconsin Institute of CPAs is the premier professional organization for Wisconsin CPAs, with more than 8,200 members in public accounting, industry, government and education.

EXTREME snowboarding for beginners As winter approaches we all start getting into our sedentary lives. Wisconsin weather seems to put us down and keep us indoors. Through the winter you may notice a few pounds gained as you slide into complete boredom. It’s time to bundle up and put yourself into gear. Snowboarding is gaining more popularity each year. Get a rush as you slide down a mountain on powdered snow, when reaching the bottom you’ll find your desire to go again and again is quit real. Here are some helpful tips to get you started: For your first time, you might want to consider taking lessons. An instructor will help you learn much faster and show you how to gear up, (showing you what you need to start) maneuvering with the board, safety tips, ect. You will probably be not as sore the next day. Next, you’ll want to decide what to do about gear.. You will need a board, footgear, and bindings. You can either buy or rent. This should be determined on how much time you are going put into the sport. Is this something you will stay committed to or just a fun thing to try? Before purchasing gear, you need to decide on what riding style you would like to do. There are four basic styles: Technical Freestyle, Freestyle, Freeriding, and Freecarving/Alpine. Technical Freestyle is for individuals interested in spins, getting big air, and tricks. Freestyle is for someone who wants to do it all, go forward, or backward, ride on powdered or hard pack snow, go in the air or stay on the ground. Freeriding is for a person who would like to stay on the ground and great for beginners learning the sport. Freecarving/Alpine is for an individual who is into speed, fast and extreme boarding carving the snow leaving deep tracks as you piece through the snow. This is not for someone who wants to do tricks. Now after picking your style you want to make sure your gear is compatible. For those who Technical Freestyle, Freestyle, or Freeride use what they call “soft boot’s”

and use a high binding with two-three straps. Freecarving/Alpine use “hard boot,” with a plate binding. The bindings that snowboarders use are unlike ski binding because they are not made to release when you fall. Which board you will be using is determined on your weight, which style you choose to ride with and the snow conditions. You stance is next in learning how to snowboard. This depends on which you’re comfortable with. If you tend to put your left foot forward , you are known as having a regular stance. But if you end up being more comfortable with your right foot forward, that is called a goofy-stance. You should choose which foot to put forward depending on your balance. Snowboarding is about balance, and stopping, turning and falling. When its your first time, bend your knees and try to distribute your weight over the board. To help go in a straight direction, put your dominant foot forward. To slow down, you should lean back on your heels; learn to balance while doing so. You will need to know how to stop once you reach the bottom of the mountain. Act like your going to slide on your heels and with your back foot try to turn the board. When learning to jump, you should take the jump slow and instead of jumping just go over the bump. Next time (if successful on the first jump) try to do the same with more speed. Get comfortable doing this a few times. Make sure your board is flat and straight when approaching the jump When approaching the jump bend your knees before you hit the bump, as your about to go in the air pop up for an extra push. Then continue to jump with little air and eventually get more air as you learn. The more you practice and experience you get, the more you will be able to learn and master more advanced tricks. This is a great winter sport to keep you out of f the couch and learning something new. It will keep you on the edge and wanting more. So get active this winter and get extreme. Hopefully these tips will help you first timers learn the basics and enjoy your first time this winter. Remember to be safe and see and instructor before snowboarding.

MTV’s new scripted thriller “Eye Candy,” based on the best-selling novel of the same name by R.L. Stine, will premiere on Monday, January 12 at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT. The hour-long, 10-episode drama centers on tech genius Lindy, played by Victoria Justice, a 21-year-old hacker with a gift for seeing clues and connections in the digital world that others can’t. Persuaded by her roommate to try online dating, Lindy begins to suspect that one of her suitors is a deadly cyber stalker. When the local cyber-crimes unit uncovers a potential serial killer in Manhattan, all signs point to this mysterious stalker. Teaming up with the cyber unit and some hacker friends, Lindy leads the charge to solve these murders while unleashing her own style of justice on the streets of New York City.

MEET THE CAST: (Victoria Justice as “Lindy”) Lindy’s been powerfully shaped by two life events. The first was the horrific abduction of her younger sister, Sara. In the aftermath of that trauma, Lindy dropped out of college, moved to New York, and became a hacker so she could dedicate herself to finding Sara, while occasionally bending the law to help others with their own unsolved missing persons cases. (Casey Deidrick as “Tommy”) Tommy, the dry-witted New York native descends from a long line of cops and now works in the NYPD Cyber Unit. He’s smart, tough, no-nonsense, and started as a beat cop before working his way up to Cyber detective. Tommy is skeptical of Lindy’s tactics and motivations, but he decides to work with her when his partner, Ben, starts helping Lindy track the stalker. Harvey Guillen as (“George”) George is Lindy’s friend, confidante, and coworker at her day job in the IT department of a financial company. A fellow hacker, George has always helped Lindy out when she needed assistance whether it’s legal or slightly left of the law. Kiersey Clemons (“Sophia”) Sophia is Lindy’s hip, gorgeous and vibrant best friend and roommate who owns the popular downtown nightclub IRL. Two years ago, Sophia rescued Lindy from perpetual couch surfing when she first moved to New York by inviting her to crash in her apartment—and Lindy never left. John Garet Stoker (“Connor”) Connor is Sophia’s other best friend – a young blogger for a gossip site. He has a friendly rivalry with Lindy, and supports Sophia’s attempts to get Lindy to join a dating app, helping Lindy navigate potential matches. Always having to share Sophia’s attentions with Lindy, Connor has his own selfish reasons for wanting Lindy to have a boyfriend.

THE MANY REASONS WHY AARON RODGERS IS A CUT ABOVE Probably the most gratifying feeling a true fan can have about an athlete is the level of achievement and the mastery of the sport they possess. When a person feels they are in the presence of pure dominance and exceptional cunning they are fulfilled. The thought that anyone can have such persistence and single mindedness along with God given talent is elating. We’re talking Muhammed Ali, Michael Jordan, Jim Brown and a very select few people. The average Joe can only live vicariously through this kind of excellence. Aaron Rodgers is easily in this category. He’s what we admire the most as true fans. He’s a machine. He doesn’t make mistakes while making huge, if not, incredible plays with relative ease and amazing frequency.

There is no other quarterback with as much upside in the history of the NFL. He is the model of efficiently. If the blocking sucks, he moves around efficiently to avoid any potential mishaps. His passes are laser sharp and spot on. This guy is accurate. He can run if the play really breaks down. He understands risk/reward like an actuary. His risk tolerance is about zero, yet he makes incredible plays like it’s nothing. He must have learned a few lessons from Bret Favre about what not to do. Specifically, give the ball away. I watch First Take on a fairly regular basis and can’t help but see that Stephan A. has the same look in his eye when he talks about Aaron Rodgers. Anyone that truly understands the discipline of sports can only be amazed by Aaron Rodgers. His efficiently is robotic. The reason Skip doesn’t have the same look is because he doesn’t watch him close enough. Watch him closer Skip, he is the Picasso of football. The thing that stops Rodgers from time to time is McCarthy. Whenever McCarthy plays a team that he perceives as better he makes his game just slightly more conservative. This usually means he gets the bone headed idea of trying to establish the running game. This completely destroys Rodgers’ rhythm. McCarthy let me tell you something you should know “Rodgers is a god. Trust in Rodgers.” Taking the ball out of his hands is just inefficient. The defense can know its coming and not stop it. You can tell what kind of day the Packers are going to have by the play calling on the opening drive. If there is more than one running play in the entire series, forget about it, McCarthy’s scared. And, that running play better be buried amidst a barrage of Aaron Rodgers. For the people who aren’t watching closely – Eddie Lacy is not having a good year. He’s slower and more tentative than last year when he looked like a world beater. Maybe the concussions are affecting him. He looked like he’d be the next Marshawn Lynch last year, but there is no semblance of that this year. Again, for those who don’t watch the Packers regularly – the defense is not good. It seems moving Matthews to the middle made a positive difference, but Capers doesn’t understand one basic principle of defense. Good defensive teams eat shrapnel for lunch. They’re not eating caviar and relying on voodoo to get the job done. Harbaugh has a steady diet of shrapnel. His teams are feared. A good defense creates fear. Great schemes only come alive when the fear element is ramped up. Then, everything works. The beauty of Rodgers is that you can have no running game and a suspect defense and still have a very good chance of winning. He is that good. You kind of can’t blame McCarthy. He learned a hard lesson after the Super Bowl year. His team sat around and watched Rodgers go 15-1 and then weren’t prepared for the playoff game. I’m sure he vowed he would never make that mistake again, but unfortunately, this is probably his best move. Rodgers is that good. Everyone can know he’s dropping back to pass, but he’ll still get the ball to the receiver like a machine. You have Aaron Rodgers! Give him the ball. In fact, tell him that is what you’re planning to do and tell him all the pressure is on his shoulders. He doesn’t care. He already knows that all the pressure is on him. He’s just glad that you came to your senses and glued the ball to his hand. He embraces the challenge without the albatross of any conservative play calling. McCarthy needs to call the plays like Rodgers is the assassin and he isloading his gun. It’s got to be so cold and so fearless that the other team always has a high level of discomfort at the thought of what attack he is going to unveil. Having played and watched a lot of football for over 40 years, I have never seen anyone like him at the quarterback position. There have been many great, incredible, quarterbacks. Montana, Brady, Manning, Elway to name a few. They are all incredible. But, none of them had the upside that Rodgers has. Each one has small downsides that Rodgers doesn’t have.

Our great society has become a nation of inconsiderate pricks. With the advent of invasive technology such as texting and twitter, people are putting up their defenses like never before. We’ve become so paranoid that we are afraid to answer the phone or respond to texts. The lack of basic social graces to handle simple inquiries such as “what’s up” or “what are you doing today,” has caused many a hard feeling and many a strained relationship. You would think someone is trying to schedule your life for the next two weeks. People see these inquiries on their phone and immediately decide they aren’t worthy of a response.

REALLY? THE BASIC EXCUSES, IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER, ARE “I’M TOO BUSY TO RESPOND” “DIDN’T SEE IT” “MY PHONE WASN’T WITH ME.” This is all to avoid texting a five word

response acknowledging the situation. A lot of times it is also because they are weighing their options and don’t want to feel committed too early only to find out that they are potentially missing out on something better. Why is a response a commitment? Unfortunately, this is only the beginning. Once they feel the power of the control derived from the non-response, an addiction is born. They suddenly feel popular and, at the same time, harassed by such an inane inquiry. “How dare these people waste my time with such useless gibberish. They should understand the importance of my life and how unimportant their little whims are.” There is no greater illustration of people’s utter selfishness, abusiveness and control than event planning. Planning an event has killed more relationships than Facebook. The person at the helm of the event is at the mercy of all the pricks who are participating. If a participant is not happy with direction of the event, they simply go on radio silence and expect everyone to infer their position. They could care less how it affects the collective group and the extra work it puts on the organizer. In fact, they take some sick pleasure in watching everyone squirm until they are ready to grace the situation with their participation. Arranging a meeting time with a group of people might as well be setting seating arrangements for the electric chair. It is that scary for many people to actually make a commitment even that small. The funny thing is they will make the commitment knowing they aren’t going to follow through anyway so why are they worried in the first place! People have probably always been this inconsiderate but it is really magnified with today’s technology. It is no wonder that more and more people are deciding to wall off and live in miserable solitude. It is a shame because it is in conflict with our natural need to socialize and probably why we attempt to replace relationships with things.

MANAGING HOLIDAY DEBT EASY STEPS

07

With the holiday season coming to a close, it’s time to get serious about managing your debt. If you are staring at a stack of outstanding credit card bills, the Wisconsin Institute of Certified Public Accountants suggests you follow this seven-step plan for managing debt. 01 Curb the urge to spend. You’ll never get out of debt if you spend more than you make each month. Effective debt management begins with taking a critical look at your spending, and then setting priorities for change. Take the time to write down everything you spend for a month and you’ll be able to analyze where your money is going. Identify where you can cut back, and allocate the money you save to paying down debt. Plan to put money aside throughout the year, so you can avoid using your credit card during the next holiday season. 02 Know what you owe. You can’t come up with a plan for managing your debt until you know where you stand. List all your debt, including the outstanding balance, minimum monthly payment, and interest rate. Start with the credit cards and loans with the highest interest rate and work your way down. 03 Prioritize your payment plan. First, determine the maximum amount you can afford to pay each month. Then, set up a plan for paying off the debt with the highest interest rate first, while paying at least the minimum due on the others. Use any and all available cash to pay down the debt. This includes raises, bonuses, and the $20 bill you found in an old coat pocket. When the highest interest debt is wiped out, use the cash that is freed up to step up efforts to pay down the next debt on the list. 04. RESTRUCTURE YOUR DEBT. One strategy is to move your high-interest credit card balances to a card with a lower interest rate. Or, if you own your own home, consider transferring your credit card debt to a home equity loan or line of credit. The interest rate is likely to be significantly lower, and home equity interest generally is tax deductible. Just be sure that you don’t make this decision lightly. You run the risk of losing your home if you don’t meet payments. 05 Cut up extra credit cards. As you eliminate your credit card debt, be sure to cancel the paid-off cards so you’re not tempted to run up a bill again. There is no need to have more than one or two credit cards. If you don’t want to carry cash, use a debit card. With a debit card, the funds are pulled directly from your checking account. So before you use it, you need to determine whether you have the cash to make the purchase. This can help reduce the urge to overspend, particularly if you know that the money in your checking account will be needed for another purpose. 06 Don’t hide from the truth. Get a copy of your credit report and study it carefully. The 2003 Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act gives every American the right to a credit report every year from each of the three major credit bureaus -- Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. To order yours, go to www.annualcreditreport.com. This is the only authorized source for accessing your annual credit report online for free. If you prefer to order your free report by phone, call 1-877-322-8228. Study your report carefully and follow the agency’s instructions for making any corrections. 07EEK PROFESSIONAL ADVICE. If you don’t feel you can go it alone, look for help from a professional credit counseling company. Consumer Credit Counseling Services (CCCS) is a national non-profit company that can help you explore your options for getting out of debt. You might also consult with a CPA who can help you work debt repayment into an overall financial plan for the future. The Wisconsin Institute of CPAs is the premier professional organization for Wisconsin CPAs, with more than 8,200 members in public accounting, industry, government and education.

UWM’s Innovation Campus taps high-performance computing resource at the Milwaukee Institute

By Laura L. Otto The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) Foundation and the Milwaukee Institute have announced their partnership for high-speed computing (HSC) resources at UWM’s new Innovation Campus in Wauwatosa. Innovation Campus tenants Brooks Stevens and Concordia University will be the first organizations to use the services provided by the Milwaukee Institute. The Milwaukee Institute’s recently upgraded HPC cluster is the largest publicly accessible supercomputing resource of its kind in Wisconsin. It allows users the ability to simulate, model and analyze complex applications used in product development, engineering, research and other projects. Using this resource, Innovation Campus tenants will be able to quickly test their product designs and create virtual prototypes, getting their projects off the drawing boards and into the general marketplace more quickly. “Innovation Campus is ecstatic to have such resources,” said David Gilbert, executive director of Innovation Campus, and president of the UWM Foundation and UWM Real Estate Foundation. “Researchers and product developers at Innovation Campus will be able to easily use the Milwaukee Institute’s high-performance computing tools without the financial burden or organizational distraction of maintaining their own IT plant. They can focus on what’s most important – their research.” The Milwaukee Institute provides high-performance computing resources to other organizations in the region, including Marshfield Clinic, the Medical College of Wisconsin and various departments at UWM. The institute also provides similar services to Wisconsin corporations such as Rockwell Automation and Briggs and Stratton. “We are delighted to be working with the researchers, scientists and product development specialists at Innovation Campus,” said Jay Bayne, executive director of the Milwaukee Institute. “Our partnership is further evidence of the momentum behind a shared, advanced IT infrastructure in Wisconsin. This model allows people to design, test and commercialize their ideas in record time without the burden of incurring capital costs.” About the Milwaukee Institute: Founded in 2007, the Milwaukee Institute is a nonprofit computational research center dedicated to promoting and providing a regional technical computing cyber-infrastructure that encourages and enables innovation within and among academic and commercial organizations. Members of the institute have access to modeling, simulation and visualization tools for development of new products and services, for exploration and discovery using computational science, and in analyzing very large datasets. The institute encourages cooperation between organizations and across multiple disciplines that seek solutions to “grand challenge” problems in such diverse fields as health care, energy production and distribution, advanced manufacturing, financial services, economics and natural resource management. For more information, visit www.mkei.org or contact info@mkei.org. About UWM’s Innovation Campus: As a “third generation” research park, Innovation Campus not only offers technology transfer and business incubation services, but also incorporates the academic and research enterprise of the university directly into the development of a private sector park. This powerful combination of industry, academia and nonprofit research organizations working in true partnership at the same location leverages the intellectual property from the academic research to spinout new companies, while also attracting new companies to the region. SOFTWARE PROGRAMS

MAKE LIFE MORE PRODUCTIVE Active Desktop Calendar

Coreldraw X3 Graphics Suite

Since its debut in 1989, Coreldraw has been one of the most underrated products in the graphics market. This has been mostly due to the predominance of Mac users in the graphics field and the dominance of Adobe products in this marketplace. Nonetheless, Coreldraw is no second rate product when it comes to design. Coreldraw X3 has incorporated a few nifty features into its latest version that helps it to stay in competition with its more high profile competitor – Adobe Illustrator. Although Corel has added 40 new features into this version, we focused on a couple that were important to us. The new Fit Text To Path tool seems to work better than previous editions and is a necessary component in today’s designs. This tool allows users to take a word or sentence and make it follow a designated path to create interested design. Another new feature, and probably the one Corel is most proud of, is the Power Trace. The feature allows you to manipulate images in an extraordinary fashion and allows more possibilities with an in manipulating an existing image. The new Crop Tool was a sorely needed part of the program. Cropping an image is now much easier and works essentially the same way as the Adobe Photoshop tool. The overall look and feel of X3 remains the same as previous versions. We’ve always preferred Coreldraw over Illustrator because of its intuitive ease of use and its multitude of effects features not found in Illustrator. Although the upgrade is not a huge one from version 12, it is enough to warrant buying this product. Full version: $399.00. Upgrade: $179.00. website: www.corel.com

This is a handy product for anyone who uses their computer a lot and wants to keep track of their daily schedule. The Active Desktop Calendar lays out on the desktop of your computer and allows you to type in reminders of things you need to take care of during the weeks and months ahead. It has a nice interface and is very easy to use. The feature we liked best was the alarm that pops up when you schedule it to, to remind you of an event that day. This is a must have program for anyone who hates to write things down and is constantly missing appointments. Full version: $19.90 website: www.xemico.com

EZ Deposit Slip

If you ever get annoyed hand writing deposit slips EZ Deposit Slip is the program for you. Fireman CD/DVD Burner

If for some reason you bought a CD or DVD burner over the internet and it didn’t come with software, this is a nice, inexpensive product to use. The interface is very easy to use and seems to be compatible with most devices. Plus, it is much less expensive than most well known programs that do the same function. A great choice for the person looking for something inexpensive and functional. Full version: $39.99 website: www.honestech.com
